Study to explore cancer from a First Nations perspective

launched a new national study to help give Australians a better understanding of how First Nations people view and experience cancer.

“Improving cancer outcomes for First Nations people is a national priority for the Government,” Senator McCarthy said.

“Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in our communities and we are more likely to die from cancers associated with preventable risk factors.

“This means we must understand the barriers relating to accessing health care and the uptake of screening.”

Funded by Cancer Australia, Kulay Kalingka – the first study of this kind in Australia – is led, designed and implemented by an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research team at the Australian National University (ANU).

ANU National Centre for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Wellbeing Research Professor Raymond Lovett said the team would collect data for 22 cancer control indicators in First Nations people.

These include their

knowledge, attitudes and understanding of cancer, participation in health promotion and cancer screening programs.

“We need to better understand the insights and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with cancer and learn from this how we can improve their cancer outcomes,” he said.

“There are significant gaps in data for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

“This new study aims to address these disparities.”

The study will also examine exposure to risk factors, and patient and carer experiences of cancer, including cancer treatment and participation in clinical trials.

Cancer Australia CEO Dorothy Keefe said between 2006 and 2019 the gap in cancer mortality between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-Indigenous Australians widened, with a 14 per cent increase in cancer mortality rates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and a 13 per cent decrease in the rates for non-Indigenous Australians.

New opportunity for community and Indigenous organisations to apply for grants to support people with cancer Minister for Health and Aged Care Mark Butler announced the opening of the Supporting People With Cancer (SPWC) Grant initiative for 2023 late last month.

Grassroots community organisations and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations working to improve outcomes for people affected by cancer are being invited to apply for funding from the SPWC Grant initiative from Cancer Australia, the Australian Government’s lead national cancer control agency.

“We are pleased to open submissions to the SPWC grants for community initiatives aimed at reducing the burden of cancer and improving support for people affected by cancer,” Minister Butler said.

“We know the difference these local projects can make to people affected by cancer in a community, and the lasting impact they can have.”

Applications are invited for the 2023 grant round, with funds of up to $120,000 available per grant.

The closing date for applications is 7 February

2023.

Warratah decision due tomorrow A decision in the matter of Warratah Coal Pty Ltd v Youth Verdict Ltd & Ors will be handed down by Land Court of Queensland President Fleur Kingham tomorrow morning.

In the landmark case, Youth Verdict and The Bimblebox Alliance, represented by Environmental Defenders Office (EDO), argued coal from the proposed Warratah mine would impact the human rights of First Nations Peoples by contributing to dangerous climate change.

They also argued the mine would destroy the Bimblebox Nature Refuge, which sits on top of the proposed mine site on Wangan and Jagalingou Country.

Youth Verdict said the case was the first time the Queensland Human Rights Act was used to object to a fossil fuel project, and the first time in Australia First Nations human and cultural rights were used to object to a coal mine.

In May this year the court travelled to Erub (Darnley) Island and Poruma (Coconut) Island to hear firsthand how climate change had negatively impacted communities and eroded their ability to practise culture, which was legally protected by cultural and human

to hear the judgement after their many years of work.

The decision will be handed down on Friday 25 November 2022 at 11.30am in Court 40, Brisbane Magistrates Court building.

In yet another first, the group said it was the first time an Australian court heard evidence against a coal mine on Country and according to First Nations protocols.

It was also the first time the Land Court was welcomed to Country as part of a hearing for a mining objection, which was accepted because of the Cultural rights.

In June this year the EDO filed their closing submissions, totalling 364 pages and

traversing the statutory scheme, the values of and impacts to Bimblebox, state-wide impacts from greenhouse gas emissions, the purported economic benefits of the proposed project and limitations on human rights, as well as biodiversity offsets, carbon capture and storage, and the coal market substitution argument.

They said all five First Nations witnesses – Lala Gutchen, Florence Gutchen, Kapua Gutchen, Jiritju Fourmile and Harold Ludwick – would be at the Court with their families

NEWS 03 Beware of Black Friday sales traps Short-term excitement around the Black Friday, Christimas and other “Click Frenzy” sales can turn into an extra-debt hangover, an expert from RMIT University warns.

“While Click Frenzy and Black Friday lure consumers with eye-catching bargains and deals, you may end up spending more than you actually want to,” Finance, School of Economics, Finance and Marketing Associate Professor Angel Zhong said. “Businesses strategically advertise their sales to exploit potential buyers’ limited attention and capacity to process information.

“That’s why consumers tend to be attracted to deals labelled with a huge discount, but ignore other aspects of the deals, such as the original price or terms and conditions such as return and refunds.

“Fear of missing out (FOMO) is also at play.

“Consumers tend to think that they may miss out if they don’t buy anything due to the increasing popularity and the hype of Click Frenzy and Black Friday.

“Due to FOMO, some consumers may buy what they don’t need.

“It’s incredibly important to plan ahead and work out what you need to buy and how much you can afford as your financial situation can become very stressful when credit card bills are due after the sale.”

She said consumers should also be extra cautious of being lured into buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) products to pay for items.

“While they can benefit from an extra channel of payment over a longer period of time, BNPL can add up if used on multiple purchases and may give you an extra debt hangover,” she said.

“Steep late payment fees are also a risk of BNPL if not paid on time.”

NAIDOC theme unveiled The 2023 National NAIDOC theme has been determined in recognition of a fundamental part of First Nations communities – our wisdom keepers and that vital bridge between the modern world and culture – under the banner of For Our Elders.

National NAIDOC Committee member Kenny Bedford said the theme was likely to be warmly received by the community.

“This theme will reinforce the importance of our elders,” he said.

“Not only are our elders important keepers of cultural knowledge and family values, they have paved the way for where we are today.

“Let’s celebrate their achievements and role in our community.”

National NAIDOC Committee Co-Chair Steven Satour said Elders were the most important aspect of healing for First Nations.

“They have the enormous task of maintaining and passing on traditional knowledge, values and customary practices, while helping us find

“They have laid the foundations for us to be successful across multiple sectors like health, education, the arts, politics and everything in between.”

The National NAIDOC Committee said they were also pleased to announce that the National NAIDOC Week Poster Competition was open.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists aged 16 years or older are invited to submit artwork that reflects the theme: For Our Elders.

Mr Bedford said a win meant significant exposure for the artist – or artists.

“I’d love to see more poster entries from our

Torres Strait Islander artists,” he said. “For the first time the Committee is accepting entries from groups. Along with the $10,000 prize money comes recognition at the National NAIDOC Awards and significant national exposure of the winning artist.”

The winning artist’s artwork will be the official 2023 National NAIDOC Week Poster.

The 2023 National NAIDOC Awards ceremony will be held in Meanjin (Brisbane) on Saturday 1 July.

The Poster Competition closes at

There’s no doubt 13 Yarn has the potential to play an important in improving social and emotional wellbeing of our people around the country, Minister for Indigenous Australians Linda Burney says.

13 Yarn was the first national crisis support line for First Nations people in need of confidential one-on-one counselling, on offer 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The hotline was officially launched nationally last week from the Sydney Opera House.

“I understand that the hotline is already operating successfully – providing welcoming, culturally safe support for our people when people are going through difficult times,” Minister Burney said.

“The past few years have been tough for many Australians and the difficult times have continued for many people.

“I understand that in October alone, more than 2500 calls to 13 Yarn were answered – that’s 500 more than the previous month.

“It’s great to hear that awareness of the service is growing and that more and more people are getting help.”

Minister Burney said she was glad 13 Yarn was there.

“A service designed for our People to

provide support with cultural understanding, to listen without judgement so no one feels any shame, recognising the power of a story to heal,” she said.

She said she also wanted to acknowledge those with lived experience of suicide and its consequences.

“There is a ripple-effect with suicide,” she said.

“They say that one death can have life-long consequences for over 100 people – family, friends, colleagues.

“I know that there would be people in this room – in fact any room – living with the grief and trauma.

“I want to acknowledge the unspoken weight that many people carry with them every day, and how difficult that can be.

“One of the wonderful things about this hotline is that it will help people to feel less alone.

“I love the comment in the brief you provided: ‘We believe there is always hope at the end of a yarn’.

In the third instalment of this year’s ABC Boyer Lecture series, speaker Noel Pearson examined the individual, community and societal structures required to empower First Nations communities, and how a Voice to Parliament would support them.

Pearson quoted from a 2017 Productivity Commission report which found three per cent of Australians – about 775,000 people – were in income poverty continuously for at least the previous four years.

He said they came from single parent families, the unemployed,

people with disabilities and Indigenous Australians, who were particularly likely to experience income poverty, deprivation and social exclusion.

“The Commission’s numbers are open to debate,” Mr Pearson said.

“They are likely an underestimate.

“I propose this ‘bottom million’ is caught in four traps: the trap of the natural rate of unemployment, the trap of the middle-class welfare service industries, the trap of the vice industries and the trap of voicelessness.

“If a Voice is to be effective

and meaningful, it must be about giving the Wik people a Voice, so that they can take better responsibility for their people.

“It must be about giving the Yolngu a Voice, so that they can be empowered to solve their own problems.

“It must be about giving the Yorta Yorta a voice.

“This must not be a top-down, socialist structure.”

Raine a priority in Threatened Species action plan Raine Island has been named as a ‘priority’ in a new Threatened Species Action Plan 2022-2032, launched by Australian Minister for Environment & Water Tanya Plibersek last month.

The new plan maps a pathway to protect, manage and restore Australia’s threatened species and important natural places.

NRM Regions Queensland CEO Chris Norman said the need for action to protect Queensland’s plants, animals and ecosystems from extinction was never greater.

“This need was highlighted in the recent State of Environment report,” Chris said.

“And this new Threatened Species Action Plan, which aims to prevent any new extinctions of plants and animals, is very much welcomed by

Queensland’s natural resource management sector.

“The plan also sets out to achieve protecting and conserving at least 30 per cent of Australia’s land mass.

“It’s an ambitious target, but communities across Queensland are standing by ready to help the Australian Government achieve this.”

As well as naming 110 plant and animal species, including the Brush-tailed Rock Wallaby, Northern Quoll, Eastern Curlew and King Blue-grass which occur in Queensland, the Threatened Species Action Plan: Towards Zero Extinctions also names 20 priority places which will be the focus for targeted actions over five years.

The objective was to improve the condition for all priority places.

He started driving for Uber Eats Delivery in 2020 and moved into Uber this year.

Boggo said he was inspired to take the leap into the Uber business by how easy it was to get started.

“We were inspired by the fact, that anyone joining Uber could enjoy many opportunities and amazing benefits this platform provides to their partners,” he said.

“With only a few steps to complete prior to becoming a successful unqualified business owner reaping great rewards and incentives with zero burdens and complex environment.

“Basically having more business flexibility than a qualified business owner having to deal with stress an all other business running components, to keep its function afloat.”

His presence in the industry in Cairns was immediately felt by island families who were lucky enough to catch him in his Uber.

“It feels more relaxed when island families are ride-sharing with us, our conversation is per normal, giving the speech of both customers and driver a bit of a break from speaking English as per physical cultural identity,” Boggo said.

Boggo is a devout disciple and kingdom follower of Jesus Christ and

said how important his faith was to getting him comfortable to get into the business.

“Put God first in everything you do,” he said.

“If you’re comfortable, you will always be uncomfortable.

“It’s best to become uncomfortable to be comfortable.

“Step outside your comfort zone, zones have no limits, and limits have no zones.”

Boggo has encouraged others to join, and has helped them to access the right forms and information to encourage them.

He said it was a great way to become your own boss and also help people.

“The Uber Driver Platform is a fast and sufficient entrepreneur income stream, that not only helps you as the driver but more so helps the nation get from A to Z,” Boggo said.

A small group celebrated the 150-year anniversary of the coming of the Gospel to Badhu Island late last month.

A morning tea, organised by Robert Bongo Sagigi, was held to raise awareness and acknowledge the date (29 October, 1872) at ANZAC Park on Waiben.

Mr Sagigi said he learned his own family history from his father, the late Reverend Seriba Sagigi, which was handed down from his grandfather Sagi/Sagigi.

He was told his father, the Chief of Wakaid, Chief Dorake went to Mabuiag and brought the good news back with him for his people.

“Chief Dorake beat a marap (bamboo) instrument which made a very loud noise to summon the people and as they came, he began telling them about the gospel and baptising them in a saltwater lagoon called ‘Mungol Darn’ (Mango Lagoon),” he said.

“As he pushed them into the water he said, “Muika, wati marr wanar, ngapa adhar mina mabaig”: Go in, leave your bad spirit and come out a good man. Thus began Christianity at Badhu.”

He said the morning tea was blessed by Bishop Tolowa Nona with some brief speeches, refreshments, plenty of laughter and lovely gospel music.

Some wins but COP27 climate fight ongoing Australia’s Minister for Climate Change & Energy Chris Bowen addressed officials from nearly 200 nations who were gathered in Sharm-El-Sheikh in Egypt, for the 27th United Nations climate change conference, known as COP27, last week.

Minister Bowen addressed the annual gathering of world leaders, corporations, and climate activists in language and highlighted the impact of the climate crisis for the Torres Strait and Pacific Islander nations.

“In Ngay Mina Koey Ubilnga ya muliz Australia Pa,” Mr Bowen said.

“That means ‘I have the privilege of speaking to you on behalf of Australia’, spoken in one of the languages of the people of the Torres Strait, the islands that run through the North East of our Nation.

“For them, for the Pacific family, for our farmers paying the price of climate change, for the Australians facing ever increasing risk of flood and bushfire.

“For everyone around the world facing natural disasters that are increasingly unnatural, Australia is acting.”

He went on to outline what the Government was doing to support the climate efforts.

“Just as this COP is focussing

STORY BY TALEI ELU PICS by Bianka Csenki on implementation, the Australian Government is focussing on real emissions reductions too – through our $20 billion transmission fund, electric vehicle tax cuts, and through policy certainty for resources and heavy industry sectors on their pathway to net zero,” he said.

Two weeks of negotiations between nations at COP27 have resulted in an agreement between countries to establish a loss and damage fund, with a transitional committee being set up to work out the finer details of who will be eligible to receive funds, who will pay, and how much money there will be.

ActionAid Australia Executive Director Michelle Higelin welcomed the initiative.

“This is a historic turning point,” she said.

“This loss and damage fund is long overdue, but it is a clear demonstration of the collective power of civil society, of communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis and developing nations for forcing rich countries to finally say ‘Yes – we are in this together’.”

Pabai, who have taken the Australian Government to court over their failure to act to save their Torres Strait homelands, said the measures have come a little too late.

The two of them told the forum they had already lost sites of significant cultural and environmental heritage to the rising seas.

“I am here to make world leaders understand what we’re going through, our livelihood, how we lived before and what we’ve lost,” Mr Kabai said.

“We need to show this to the leaders of the world, we are here to put a pin on the paper on the map, and say look at us, we’re here.

“We’re sinking.”

Their case will be heard in June 2023 with a focus on conducting hearings on Country in the Torres Strait to enable community participation.

If the case is successful the Australian Government will be required to take more serious measures to address climate change and its impacts.

COP27 finished last Sunday with a bid from Australia to host the 2026 COP event, which could draw as many as 40,000 delegates and representatives.

The Summer Show completes UMI Arts 2022 exhibition series with a gift-worthy showcase of Queensland’s best by the far north’s emerging and established Indigenous artists.

Featuring 27 artworks by 15 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, the Show celebrated its official opening earlier this month and will run over the Christmas and New Year period until Friday 5 February 2023.

UMI Arts’ Exhibition Officer Robyne Pacey said this year’s colourful and eclectic show included

paintings, works on paper, artefacts, multimedia installations, fabric, homewares, and ceramics, “in what is testament to the artists’ diverse talent and distinct Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures”.

The Summer Show 2022 featured artists included Erin Jia (Yidinji, Meriam & Badulaig people) and George Passi (Mer Island).

The exhibition is free of charge to view between 10am and 4pm at UMI Arts Shop 4, Jensen Plaza Gallery, 1 Jensen Street, Manoora.

Ailan voices must be heard after Purrumpa Purrumpa was a nice welcome back to South Australia for me as I have been away from the state I grew up in and living here in the Torres Strait for the past 12 years, Torres News editor Diat Alferink writes...

It was also an amazing chance for many arts and cultural people from around the country to network with new contacts and reconnect with existing collaborators and colleagues.

It allowed us to be reinspired and rejuvenated as we heard about all the works that are happening around the country, and joining in those important discussions about where and how we all go from here.

The main item on the agenda for the Purrumpa gathering was the launch of the Bringing it Forward report: a consultation taken across the country of our arts and cultural practitioners for their opinions about whether a National Cultural Authority was the way we should go.

Life, art, culture and community are all foundations and fabrics of our society, and all that we do in the creative industries is to sustain our cultural wellbeing.

Our time at Purrumpa allowed us to discuss, express concerns, and look for a way forward with this potential model for our future.

The implications for Torres Strait Islander arts and culture, and adequate mainland and homeland TSI representations on such an authority, is paramount.

Being a minority within the minority, I believe our distinct Torres Strait Islander arts and cultural voices must be heard.

Consultations for the report were very brief within the Torres Strait, so I felt community did not have much time to consider all the issues and factors.

A mainland TSI representative body could have also been engaged to collate a national mainland TSI response.

Overall the National Cultural Authority is a good idea, my hesitation is around just how it’s going to work, and what structure or structures will be incorporated to improve the artistic and cultural lives of our Torres Strait communities.

Whatever the outcome I hope our message that any representative body must have Torres Strait Island homeland and mainland representation is taken into account.

A five day celebration of First Nations art and culture was held at the Adelaide Convention Centre and online earlier this month.

‘Purrumpa’, from the Kaurna language meaning ‘to blossom’ was convened by the Australia Council and claimed to be the largest national gathering of arts and culture in 50 years, since the first national seminar was held in Canberra in 1972.

The event brought together Elders, emerging leaders, artists, arts workers, performers and thought leaders for deep listening, performances, keynote speeches, ceremony, yarning circles and storytelling across multiple artforms.

Minister for Indigenous Australians Linda Burney and Arts Minister Tony Burke were among those who attended, as did Torres News editor Diat Alferink (see page 10).

Minister Burney said it was an honour to be invited.

“Purrumpa is an opportunity to celebrate the enormous artistic and cultural contribution of First Nations people, who maintain one of the oldest continuing cultures in the world,” she said.

“It’s an opportunity to reflect on the past, but also look forward to the next 50 years.”

Minister Burke said it was an important time for First Nations arts and artists.

“Events like Purrumpa lift up First Nations voices and help shape our national identity,” he said.

“The first pillar of our landmark National Cultural Policy will be First Nations first – and I know the ideas and discussions here will help inform that.

“This Government is committed to safeguarding First Nations culture

Key insights: • Most people the Australia Council talked to said they wanted a national body.

• They said other areas have national representation in Australia, but not First Nations’ art and culture.

• Many people had concerns too.

Some were worried that it would be too big and how it would get its money.

• Some were worried about whether it would represent all our communities and voices – they said that it should coordinate and champion community decision making and our hardworking existing organisations.

The program featured creatives and thinkers, including Rhoda Roberts AO, Djon Mundine, Pat Anderson AO, Michael Mansell, Professor Dr Marcia Langton AO, and Bob Weatherall in conversation with his son Warraba Weatherall.

Findings of the Bringing it Forward report into the possibilities around a national body for arts and culture were also launched over the week.

The idea for a national body was built on decades of community discussions culminating in consultations carried out by the Australia Council in 2018-19.

A First Nations Arts and Culture Strategy Panel was held on the last day of the conference, chaired by Larissa Behrendt. “(We need to) keep having conversations, celebrate our strengths, learn from what people have done in certain sectors and help lift up those sectors, those voices that still need to be heard,” she said.

Panel member Wayne Barker said there was lots of work to do. “ We’ve come a long way,” he said.

“We’ve got a long way to go.

“I want to acknowledge those hardworking people at the coalface of this.

“Most of their lives they’ve committed heart, body and soul to the aspirations of us as First Nations people to find, finally, our voice.

“A voice that has national and international recognition.”

More on Purrumpa on page 10  • Many liked the idea of coming together as an alliance of our existing organisations and a referral agency, to:  coordinate between communities, networks and services;  oversee protocols;  help artists find their way to the services they need; and  make sure our artists’ and cultural practitioners’ voices are heard nationally.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST TRAWQ GOVERNANCE PROJECT EOI 05/2022 Torres Shire Council is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) from suitably qualified and experienced persons to undertake a Governance Project associated with the TRAWQ communities on Thursday Island.

The 2022 annual awards night for Tagai State College, Waybeni Koey Ngurpay Mudh, Thursday Island Secondary Campus was well-attended by students, parents, teachers and their staff.

Academic Awards on the night included the 2022 Queensland Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Foundation (QATSIF) Scholarship and Creative Arts competition, Junior, Junior Secondary and Senior School Awards, and Vocational Education

and Training in Schools Awards for students who had shown outstanding commitment and attendance within their TAFE Certificate Courses for Years 11 and 12.

Sporting Awards for Junior and Senior Sportspeople of the Year were also awarded and included the four players nominated into a national Indigenous team made up of students from remote communities formed by former NRL players Timanu Tahu and Dean Widders.

TSRA Excellence Award goes to Kailu Luffman

Encouragement Awards were offered for each year as well as a Torres Shire Council All-Rounder Award won by Jai Lewin, Principal Suberia Bowie’s Recognition Awards won by Matilda Manuel, Jai Lewin and Rita Mabo, Excellence Awards in Arts (Myeisha Weston), Language and Culture (Kesia Bob), Sportsmanship (Mary Wapau), and there was the Marine Pursuits and TSRA Excellence Awards both won by Kailu Luffman (see story and pic below).

Other awards included those for Senior and Junior TI Pharmacy Maths/Science; JCU Encouragement, Tagai VET, Structured Placement, Youth of the Year (Junior Mistee Sagigi and Senior Kailu Luffman), the Torres Strait Regional Council Academic Award (Tyler David), TSIREC Ted Loban Award (Jikidda Manuel); Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Awards and ADF Future Innovators Awards.

The future is bright for Tagai State College student Kailu Luffman – winner of the 2022 TSRA Excellence Award.

TSRA Member for TRAWQ, Sereako Stephen, presented the award on behalf of the TSRA at the Tagai State College Academic Awards Night last Thursday.

“It is wonderful to acknowledge the positive impact local students such as Kailu Luffman make at school and in the community,” Mr Stephen said.

Kailu was also a QATSIF scholarship recipient and won the Year 12 Essential English and Aquatic Practices prizes, the Excellence in Marine Pursuits award and was named the 2022 Senior Youth of the Year.

TSRA Chairperson Napau Pedro Stephen AM said the TSRA was proud to partner with Tagai State College to recognise student role

models such as Kailu.

“Young people are the next generation of leaders and changemakers in the Torres Strait,” Mr Stephen said.

“Each year, the TSRA Excellence Award recognises an inspiring Year 12 student who has displayed outstanding initiative, leadership qualities and applied themselves in their schooling pursuits while helping support and mentor others.

“The TSRA warmly congratulates Kailu Luffman on receiving this award and we wish him the very best for his bright future.”

The TSRA will provide Kailu with a laptop to support his work, study and training aspirations. *Kailu has also been chosen out of more than 1000 students to be an Australian Olympic Change-Maker.

Thirty-six students graduated from Peace Lutheran College last week, their families, relatives and friends coming from near and far in support of their efforts and to celebrate at the school’s Year 12 Formal.

The Wapau family travelled from St Paul Moa Island for their daughter Kiali, who was stunning in her Formal attire as she danced with her partner Peo Abednego.

The Formal was held at the Pullman International Hotel Cairns a couple of nights prior to the graduation ceremony last Friday.

Cowboys House celebrates 2022 graduates

BY ALF WILSON FIVE youngsters from the Torres Strait were amongst 17 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who graduated at a ceremony held at NRL Cowboys House in Townsville earlier this month.

These 11 men and six women were touted as future community leaders and were ready to take their next steps into further education, training and employment.

The five Torres Strait graduates were George Abednego (Waiben), Josh Daniel (Waiben), Tekelu Mene (Warraber Island), Manu Nona (Waiben) and Haley Pearson (Warraber Island).

At the ceremony they were joined by their fellow Indigenous boarding students, staff, family and community members, school community members, partners and supporters.

It was the sixth annual NRL Cowboys House awards ceremony.

NRL Cowboys House Girls Campus shone as the efforts and achievements of the whole Year 7-12 student body were recognised across 18 award categories, following a Welcome to Country and performance by the Wulgurukaba Walkabouts and on-stage performances by the NRL Cowboys House dance troupe and student soloist George Abednego.

NRL Cowboys House General Manager Rochelle Jones paid tribute to every student who, she said, reflected the NRL Cowboys House values of family, resilience and integrity in their actions throughout the year.

“We are really fortunate to work in a place where we’re still seeing many firsts for our young people who are coming here from some very remote communities,” she said.

“Whether it’s their first time in a

large shopping centre or movie theatre, or the first time at a school of over 2000 students, they take that challenge in their stride.

“All of the young people who leave their families to come to Townsville to get a secondary education, you’re a truly amazing group of young people.

Celebrations included guest speakers and a Q&A with past students about their time at NRL Cowboys House and their achievements since graduation.

Graduating students were presented with a special North Queensland Toyota Cowboys Indigenous jersey with their name and boarding number on the back, featuring artist Margaret Mara’s My Journey My Way design.

Outgoing House captains Elijah Joe and Chasidy Pearson thanked the House’s philanthropic family in a moving video that encouraged younger students to work hard in their education to achieve their dreams.

Speaking at the ceremony, Cowboys Community Foundation Director Jeff Reibel said NRL Cowboys House had created significant opportunities and outcomes for Indigenous secondary students across North Queensland.

“Over the years we’ve worked hard to create an innovative balance of ensuring a place of safety, friendship and fun, but also encouraging students to challenge themselves to reach the goals they have for themselves and write their own stories,” he said.

“Six years on, I believe we’ve created a unique home away from home unlike any other in this country that is creating success stories like the ones we celebrate tonight.”

Bright future and great lifestyle ahead for Far North Class of 2022 Far North Queenslanders have farewelled graduating Year 12 students on their last day of school, wishing them all the best for the future.

A recent survey showed their future was brighter than ever, with their predecessors, the Class of 2021, recording a major increase in engagement in education, training and employment after graduating.

Education Minister Grace Grace said the 2022 Next Step survey showed graduates from the Far North were kicking goals.

“In the Far North, total engagement in education, training and employment for the most recent graduates has risen to 87.8 per cent in 2022 from 82.4 per cent in 2019,” Ms Grace said.

“This year’s graduating Year 12 students can celebrate their success knowing a bright future of good jobs and a great lifestyle lies ahead of them.”

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said she was pleased to see the rate of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander graduates engaging in education, training or employment had continued to improve, up 1.2 percentage points from last year to 76.7 per cent.

“I’m a proud mum of a young man from the Torres Strait, who just officially graduated Year 12,’’ Ms Lui said.

“I know there are many others across the State who are celebrating just like me and my son.

“I am just so thrilled to see the rate of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates continues trending in the right direction.

“This is an excellent result.”

More than 51,000 Year 12 students from 2021 were invited to participate in the 2022 Next Step survey, with more than 39,000 providing a response.

Far North data was calculated with survey results of students from the LGAs of Aurukun, Cairns, Cassowary Coast, Cook, Douglas, Lockhart River, Mareeba, Northern Peninsula Area, Tablelands, Torres and Weipa.

AFL makes second visit to Kubin and St Paul’s KUBIN.

For the second time this year AFL Cape York has visited Moa Island to run in-school and after-school AFL programs AFL Cape York Development Officer Kieran Sciberras says.

“The programs have been used as a fun way to encourage behaviour and attendance at school as the end of Term 4 approaches,” he said.

The first half of last week saw Kieran and AFLCY Development

Coordinator Matt Mellahn running AFL clinics at Tagai College – Kubin Campus before finishing off the week young people at Tagai College – St Paul’s campus.

“It’s great to see the students here remembering some of the skills and rules from out last visit,” Kieran said.

“It’s clear that some of them have been practicing too.

“We’re working with the two campuses now to ensure that they can both have a supply of AFL

footballs and goal posts to keep perfecting their football skills in the lead up to our U12 Crusader Tournament on Thursday Island next year.

“Tagai State College have been massive supporters of our Outer Island trips so far this year, so we hope that partnership can continue.”

He said the AFL Game Development team was at Badu this week so there were more photos of the AFL action to come!

The Cairns Taipans snapped the Bullets’ three-game win streak with a 90-82 victory in Brisbane last weekend.

A 12-0 scoring run to end the third quarter helped get Cairns into a winning position against its Queensland rivals.

It was a tight battle for much of the evening as well and the Bullets were up five midway through the third quarter.

MVP contender Keanu Pinder had a huge game finishing with 25 points (15 of which came in the last quarter), eight

rebounds and four assists, helping to turn a five point deficit into a nine point win.

Teammate Bul Kuol said he did a good job.

“Keanu did a good job there at the end, attacking downhill with 15 points in the fourth quarter,” he said.

“We had confidence the whole time.

“Even though our three-ball wasn’t falling like usual, we had confidence in our defence and in our offence.”

The Taipans will play at home tomorrow night against the New Zealand Breakers and again on Monday night against the Sydney Kings.

Christian keen to make top 30 story ALF WILSON PIC SUpplied Julian Christian (pictured) has his sights firmly set on making the North Queensland Cowboys final squad of 30 players for the NRL 2023 season.

The 24-year-old said he also hoped to be in the Cowboys side to meet the new club the Dolphins at Barlow Park at Cairns in a trial during February.

Impressing Cowboys coach Todd Payten was the key, and he said he was looking forward to what was ahead.

He will be one of a handful of players on a ‘train and trial’ deal.

Proud of his heritage, Christian was part of the Erub United side which won the 2021 Zenadth Kes carnival on Waiben, the recent Arthur Beetson Foundation Murri Knockout at Redcliffe, and, most recently, the Gordonvale Indigenous Allblacks.

“I grew up in Cairns and played for the Edmonton Storm from age six,’ he said.

During this time he met Erub United organiser Elia Ware, who rated him highly.

When he was in Year 10 Christian moved to Townsville to attend Kirwan High, which had a champion rugby league team.

Brisbane and had a stint with the Broncos under 20’s before he played four years for the Ipswich Jets in the Queensland Cup. “I was homesick and came back to the north and signed in 2021 for the Innisfail Leprechauns in the Cairns comp,” he said.

“My mother is from Innisfail and we lost the grand final to Yarrabah [that year].”

In season 2022 Christian played with Cairns-based Northern Pride in the Hostplus Cup Statewide comp and was signed with the Cowboys in October.

“I used to be a halfback but now play fullback,” he said.

Christian also said he hoped to get up to the Torres Strait over Christmas to visit family and friends on Darnley.

The Cowboys look set for a boom 2023 season after finishing third of 16 teams in this season, after coming from near the bottom a year before.

“In 2023 I’ll be moving to Cairns to play for Mossman Sharks,” he wrote on his social media page last weekend. “[I’m] very excited and can’t wait to get there to run around with my family.”

Erub to take on Koori winners

BY ALF WILSON Queensland Murri Knockout winners Erub United will meet New South Wales Koori Knockout victors Newcastle Allblacks to decide the best Allblacks carnival team in Australia in January.

Erub United organiser Elia Ware said the big game was confirmed for Saturday 28 January at the Bill Norris Oval in Beenleigh, south of Brisbane.

“The rules state that both teams must field the same players that played at their respective carnivals, and only a squad of 20 is allowed,” he said.

The game was dubbed as having a State of Origin flavour to it, with lots of pride at stake, and a large number of supporters expected to travel south for the showdown.

Newcastle Allblacks won the biggest Allblacks carnival in the country, beating Walgett Aboriginal Connection 22-16 in the men’s final of the Koori Knockout, in early October.

Erub United won the Murri Knockout men’s title on the same weekend at Redcliffe, just north of Brisbane, after proving to be too good for Coastal Blacks.

Some of the Erub United stars included Julian Christian, who has since been signed by the NQ Cowboys (see page 19 for more), Gideon Gela-Mosby and former Rooster Bernard Lewis, as well as try scoring whiz Jono Reuben, who made his NRL debut with St George Illawarra Dragons earlier this season.

Torres Strait sides have done well in previous Murri versus Koori clashes with winners including Badhu sides Argun Warriors and Kulpiyam, both of whom were coached by Terry Abednego.
