BY TALEI ELU Torres Strait 8 claimants, several young, and many local Torres Strait Islanders, descended on Parliament

House in Canberra on Monday to bring the issue of climate change to the door of Government on Monday.

The group built a replica seawall made of sandbags on the lawns of Parliament

House to drive home the critical need for climate action to save islands of the Torres Strait from rising seas.

The Our Island Our Home petition, signed by more than 48,000 people and calling on the

Government to limit carbon emissions under the Paris Agreement, was delivered to Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen, Assistant Minister Jenny McAlister and the Attorney General Mark

Dreyfus shortly after the demonstration.

Torres Strait 8 claimant Kabay Tamu said it was the first time he felt they had been heard.

“Overall, for me I felt that it was very positive,” he

said. “Chris Bowen talked a lot about a lot of the things that were already in place, and the new funding for the Climate Change Centre of Excellence.”

Plans for TSLIB 80th

BY ALF WILSON & VELMA GARA Celebrations to mark the 80th anniversary of the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion (TSLIB), which defended Australia’s northern most outposts during World War II, have been discussed at community meetings in Townsville over the past few weeks.

The first meeting was held at St John Anglican Church in South Townsville and attended

by about 20 men and women, many of whom were descendants of those who served in the Battalion.

The Torres News was invited to attend.

At the meeting a working committee was formed which included: Theresa Cowley, brothers Moses, Ken and Patrick Neliman, Elimo Tapim, Salome Tapim, Morris Cloudy, Russell Phillpot, Genus Passi, Francis Tapim and Aicey Day. Some of the audience, including Genus Passi, said they were proud of their descendants who served.

“It was my grandfather George Sailor,” Mr Passi said.

The Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion was much acclaimed, and unique in that almost all of its enlisted men were Torres Strait Islanders, making it the only Indigenous Australian battalion ever formed by the Australian Army.

In June 1942 an appeal for further volunteers was sent out and the response from Torres Strait Islanders was considerable – 830 Torres Strait Islander men joined its ranks throughout the course of the war, a total equal

to about one fifth of the population of the Torres Strait at the time.

MC for the meeting was Theresa Cowley, with support from Father Elimo Tapim, who recited the opening prayer.

One idea discussed was to hold the anniversary in Townsville on Anzac Day in 2023, which they said was open for discussion.

Mrs Cowley said they were keen for more community support.

A second meeting was held last weekend, on November 5, at the Townsville City Library and resulted in positive discussions about a budget and different types of activities for the celebration of the 80th anniversary.

Ms Cowley said she hoped there would be other events held throughout the country to highlight the service of Torres Strait Islander men and women.

She said all Islanders were welcome to the community meetings, with another one to be held this coming Saturday, 12 November, at 10am at St John’s Church Hall at 32 Macrossan Street in South Townsville.

Food & Business Expo for Cairns Y(E)P Cairns will host a free Indigenous Food & Business Expo showcasing business owners, artists, native foods, and programs at the Pier Shopping Centre next Wednesday.

Entrepreneur-centred service Y(E)P works to encourage entrepreneurship and self employment in the Cairns and surrounding region.

Dozens of stall holders, each with their unique products and services, are expected to hold stalls including Zenadth Kes Karate School, jewelery and accessories by TTPOPP (Talicia Bolea) and UMI Arts (featuring arts and crafts by several artists).

Y(E)P said it was an opportunity for the public to see the Indigenous innovation in their local community, taste delicious food, enjoy entertainment and get some Christmas shopping done.

They said everyone was welcome to attend the Indigenous Food & Business Expo on Wednesday 16 November from 1pm-6pm at the Pier Shopping Centre Cairns.

Skytrans flights out to end of month - at least Skytrans management has cited ‘operational restrictions’ as the reason flights to Mer, Darnley and Mabuiag are still suspended, the airline told The Cairns Post earlier this week.

Skytrans Chief Executive Officer Alan Milne told reporter Peter Carruthers new

restrictions relating to landing strip requirements had forced the grounding of planes using short runways.

Mr Milne said Skytrans had applied to the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) for an exemption based the historic safe operation of the Cessna Caravan.

“It’s not uncommon to apply for an exemption to a regulation if we can prove there is no compromise to safety,” he said.

“It’s a bit of a rolling delay and we’re trying to get our passengers flying as soon as possible.”

Mr Milne said he didn’t expect a full lifting of

restrictions all at once but hoped for a gradual return of services later this month.

A CASA spokesman told The Cairns Post the body was “working closely with Skytrans” to get planes back to the islands.

Talei nominated in Aus of the Year awards Queensland nominees for the 2023 Young Australian of the Year Awards include community organiser and Torres News correspondent Talei Elu (pictured right).

Talei is one of 19 people in the running to be named the Queensland Australian of the Year, Queensland Senior Australian of the Year, Queensland Young Australian of the Year or Queensland Local Hero.

Talei was nominated after using her experience of six years of working for the Federal Government, along with her knack

for media creation and community organisation skills, to start initiatives that have had a positive effect in her home community of Seisia.

Since returning home during the pandemic, Talei has worked with the Australian Electoral Commission to enrol and educate more Indigenous people about the importance of voting.

She has also arranged for local women to receive free feminine hygiene products, baby necessities, and beauty and self-care items, and she started Seisia Sports and Rec, a free sports equipment hire

initiative for youth.

Talei regularly organises beach clean-ups and was recently named as the

youngest member of the Queensland Indigenous Voice panel and co-chair.

Musician William Barton was also

nominated in the category of Queensland Australian of the Year.

The four award recipients from Queensland will be announced next Tuesday, 15 November, in a ceremony at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre in Brisbane, which will also be available to watch via ABC iView from 6:30pm (local Brisbane time).

They will join the other state and territory recipients as national finalists for the national awards announcement on 25 January 2023 in Canberra.

Locals win at Queensland tourism industry awards Cape York Peninsula Lodge has won Gold for their 4-4.5 Star Deluxe Accommodation at the annual 2022 Queensland Tourism Awards Gala Ceremony held on the Gold Coast last week.

It also earned Silver in the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Tourism category in conjunction with its operator, Bamaga Enterprises Limited (BEL).

Lodge Manager Harrison Mylrea and BEL Director Jean Williams accepted the gold award in front of more than 1000 tourism operators and individuals from around the state.

BEL Chairperson Robert Poipoi said the Lodge offered an array of cultural experiences in a remote part of the world where Indigenous culture was infused throughout the tourism experience.

disruptions and restrictions, the Lodge had a record-breaking year in 2021/22, with a 92 per cent increase in visitors and a 54 per cent rise in group bookings.

“We’re so proud to receive a Gold and Silver award and it’s well deserved for the hard work and effort of our employees to make sure guests have an enjoyable stay,” Mr Poipoi said.

“Operating in such a remote location can be challenging, so to receive an award like this will not only benefit the Lodge, but also play a key role in continuing to attract visitors outside of the peak tourism season.”

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk applauded the exceptional calibre of nominations for the 37th annual

gala event.

“The Queensland Tourism Award winners recognise both new and established iconic tourism operations from every corner of the state,” the Premier said.

“The depth and breadth of our world-class tourism offering was evident from the 150 strong nominations in 31 award categories.”

Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) CEO Brett Fraser said the awards had brought together an outstanding selection of operators that truly reflected the diverse range of the state’s quality tourism offerings.

“Collectively, this year’s recipients are a testament to the strength and calibre of the state’s tourism operators, and I applaud this great industry and its people for the innovation and resilience they have displayed,” Mr Fraser said.

TSRA Rangers battle invasive Leucaena weeds on Boigu

Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) Rangers from across the region have joined forces to battle fields of invasive Leucaena weeds on Boigu.

When Boigu Senior Ranger Nelson Gibuma put out the call for help, 14 TSRA Rangers from Dauan, Erub, Mabuyag, Moa and Saibai responded.

Mr Gibuma said the weed removal was an aspiration identified by the community and local

native title body – it just needed ranger power.

“This project is important to the Boigu community because this pest weed has been getting out of hand,” Mr Gibuma said.

“Three-metre-tall Leucaena weeds were spreading to people’s yards and taking over native trees and plants, such as Yam plantations.”

A respected cultural advisor and traditional language speaker, Mr

Gibuma said the pest species had become a big problem in recent times.

“The weeds were so dense and overgrown it was hard to walk through – it was like a forest,” he said.

“The community needed help to get it under control and the TSRA Rangers were happy to help.”

Rangers transported material and equipment from Thursday Island.

Over four days, they treated, uprooted and transformed the pest weed into about 180 kilos of mulch, which remained covered with tarps for several weeks to stop the weed resprouting.

In a gesture of appreciation for local hospitality, the group then took the opportunity to maintain and tend to the Cemetery of Boigu.

The Rangers cut grass, cleared unwanted trees, raked leaves and removed debris from the cemetery grounds before making the journey back to their communities.

Acting Top Western Cluster Ranger Supervisor Alice Manas said the project was important for both the

local community and visiting rangers.

“Caring for land and sea also is also about respecting those who have cared for country long before us,” Ms Manas said.

“As rangers, we appreciate this as a gift and responsibility – we are proud to play our part.”

TSRA Chairperson Napau Pedro Stephen AM said TSRA Rangers continued to support community aspirations.

“TSRA Rangers carry out a range of activities including pest and weed control, marine debris management, surveillance and monitoring, dugong and turtle management, seagrass monitoring and cultural heritage site protection, in addition to traditional ecological knowledge recording and management in partnership with communities,” he said.

Community members can collect the free mulch from the Boigu ranger office throughout November.

Senator Nita Green and Senator for the ACT and former Australia rugby union player, David Pocock, left Parliament House to come down to the lawns to show their support for the action, as did Greens Party Leader Adam Bandt and Senator Jordan Steele-John.

Torres Strait 8 claimant Kabay Tamu said seeing the many Torres Strait Islanders living in Canberra come to show their support was incredibly moving.

“It was such a blessing to see island families there supporting us,” he said.

“I think it adds to that importance of this fight when you see people who are on the mainland take time off from what they’re doing to come and support.”

Boigu Islander Stanley Marama said it was important to get their message to politicians and the world.

“It was exciting to be there in Canberra representing our island, we know everybody is in one boat with climate change, not only Torres Strait, but Pacific Islands too,” he said.

Demonstrators urged the Albanese Government to adopt the five demands of the 350.org campaign to protect Zenadth Kes from climate damage.

The Our Island Our Home petition, signed by more than 48,000 people and calling on the Government to limit carbon emissions to the 1.5 degree target under the Paris Agreement, was delivered to Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen, Assistant Minister Jenny McAlister and the Attorney General Mark Dreyfus shortly after the demonstration.

The delegation to the Ministers included included Gur A Baradharaw Kod Sea and Land Council (GBK) Chair Ned David and claimants.

Mr Tamu said it was the first time he felt they had been heard.

“Just to actually even have a meeting and talk with these politicians

was something that the last government struggled to do,” he said.

“The last government never met with us and declined all our request to meet.

“Now with this government, they are a bit more keen and open to sit and have those discussions.

“Overall, for me I felt that it was very positive.

“Chris Bowen talked a lot about a lot of the things that were already in place, and the new funding for the Climate Change Centre of Excellence and how that will look.

“We talked to him about making sure the right people were consulted and involved in the co-design.

“We talked about the recent UN decision and the Governments upcoming response to the recommendations from the United Nations.

“The Attorney General wasn’t clear on what the response will be, but I am hopeful that that they will take on some of the recommendations and deliver for our people there in Zenadth Kes”.

Uncle Ted Billy from Warraber reflected on the journey of this campaign and said he was proud to have been a part of this historic action.

“It is a passion,” he said.

“I was happy to stand up and voice my concerns for Torres Strait.”

Organiser Waniki Maluwapi said planning had taken several months.

“It was such a powerful action, and I felt so proud and grateful to be standing alongside my community to echo their calls for rapid climate action in Zenadth Kes,” she said.

Torres Strait 8 claimant and Masig Islander, Yessie Mosby, and his son Genia were in Egypt for the latest UN Conference of the Parties – COP27 – where world leaders were expected to try to find consensus for accelerating global climate action.

Genia is part of a worldwide delegation of youth speaking about being on the frontline of climate change.

CEQ announces winners at annual Awards event

Remote store operator Community Enterprise Queensland (CEQ) has celebrated this year’s winners of its Annual Awards at a special ceremony in Cairns – with six out of ten possible gongs going to the Torres Strait and NPA. The awards, which were the culmination of CEQ’s three-day Annual Managers Conference, celebrated achievements in CEQ’s service across North Queensland, including its remote stores in Cape York and the Torres Strait, and on Palm Island.

Mr Dykes said CEQ was passionate about providing training opportunities for its employees, the majority of which were Torres Strait Islander or Aboriginal people.

“This year’s managers conference theme of ‘Together for Tomorrow’ focused not only on the

Indigenous cultures that we deliver services to in our remote stores, but also our workplace culture,” Mr Dykes said.

Animal support group enjoys funding boost The Thursday Island Animal Support Group Inc (TIASG) counted a well-deserved $35,000 in donations last week, which included $25,000 from the Queensland Government Gambling Community Benefit Fund.

SavourLife also awarded $10,000 towards the cost of facilitating two vet clinics, “in recognition of the positive impact the vet clinics are having on the community”.

Overall the money will go towards facilitating clinics and completing the container conversion into an air-conditioned vet surgery, as well as promotional materials and a website.

TIASG President Sonia Einersen said it was an exciting time for the group, as the funds woud allow more animals to be treated and ensure they were able to provide assistance when the vets were not on the island.

“It is great our work is not only being recognised by the Queensland Government, but by a national company as well,” she said.

“This funding allows us to extend the services we provide at our vet clinics, which now includes the heartworm prevention vaccination and superlorin implants, which are a safe and effective nonpermanent contraceptive for male dogs.

“While we focus on desexing at our clinics, it is not the only service offered.

“Animals can have a general health check, vaccinations, be microchipped and have surgery for other health issues.”

Since last year TIASG has organised four vet clinics, in collaboration with Vets Beyond Borders and the Animal Welfare League, with more than 530 animals receiving vet care.

Free legal service visits vital to Ailan safety and support

Dealing with Elder abuse, healthy and unhealthy relationships, domestic and family violence, or helping community members with legal processes such as obtaining Blue Cards are all part of the work undertaken by the Queensland Indigenous Family Violence Service (QIFVLS) when they visit our communities.

Early in October – which also happened to be Sexual Violence Awareness Month – two QIFVLS workers, Bamaga-based Case Management Officer Kitty

Tabuai and Cairns-based solicitor Mehak Lopez, visited several communities for what is known as the PICLE circuit, or: Primary Intervention Community Legal Education.

QIFVLS is a free legal service for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people affected by family violence or sexual assault in a culturally appropriate manner.

The PICLE circuit aims to empower remote community members through education sessions covering those subjects, and more.

Although it was Mehak’s first PICLE circuit, she said she was extremely keen to

put her hand up for another trip.

“The Torres Strait is so unique, and each island is so different,” she said.

“I’m so privileged and blessed to be able to travel through these beautiful places and help empower the remote communities by providing legal education.”

The two worked closely with the different police liaison officers and community justice groups in each of the communities, who helped the team get a feel of which issues were the most relevant issues for each community.

some communities talking about Domestic and Family Violence is taboo, so the team needed to find ways to talk around this issue to have the messaging accepted.

Sexual Violence Awareness Month resources helped them to raise better awareness of the impacts of Sexual Violence which is something a large proportion of all Australians have experienced at some point in their lives.

Figures suggest more than 20 per cent of women and eight per cent of men over the age of 18 have experienced some form of sexual violence at some point in their life.

It can take many forms, and it can happen to anyone,

although women and girls are significantly overrepresented as victims of sexual offenses in Queensland.

Within that gendered disproportion, evidence shows Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and girls are further overrepresented.

Although it may be taboo to discuss these things, to make communities safer everybody needs to face the issues head on.

The courageous journey women and girls take who make a complaint of sexual violence to police can be very challenging.

Many people give up, as many people feel that

they are not believed and are sometimes treated disrespectfully by the police, legal practitioners, prosecutors, and judicial officers.

However, it is important that victim-survivors are supported in a way that sees them take their complaints through to the courts.

QIFVLS can help victimsurvivors on this journey.

“We are a resource for people to access,” Mehak said.

“We are a good way to help empower the community councils to set up different initiatives to better address the different needs of all the different remote communities.”

Strong Ailan presence at justice vigils for Cassius Turley

By ALF WILSON & christine howeS More than 40 rallies and vigils were held around the country following the death of Perth boy Cassius Turvey, 10 days after he was allegedly beaten with a metal pole while walking home from school in his uniform.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described his death as “a human tragedy for Cassius’ mum, for the people who knew this young man.

“You look at his smile and you think, ‘that’s a life that should have been just

beginning’. And it was over all too soon.

“I think that people expressing their concern about it is a good thing.”

He said Indigenous people were more likely to suffer violence in Australia, than non-Indigenous people.

“We need to acknowledge that,” he said. “We need to do much better.”

Hundreds of men, women and children took part in a “March for Justice for Cassius” in Townsville.

It was followed by a meeting and vigil at Strand Park.

Waru - a small turtle’s first journey sells out

Families and friends made it a very special and wonderful occasion for Margo Pau (nee Santo) as they helped her celebrate the milestone birthday of 80 years last Saturday.

Celebrations were held at the Bungalow Hotel in Cairns, thanks to the tremendous effort of her grandsons, who toiled to ensure the venue was comfortable for her big family. The two of them also performed a special impromptu dance for families who came from as near as Townsville and as far away as Brisbane for the big event.

BY VELMA GARA Following a sold-out premiere season Bangarra Dance Theatre’s Waru – Journey of the Small Turtle will join the 2023 Sydney Festival at the Pavilion Performing Arts Centre in January.

The performance encourages everyone to join the heroine, Migi, as she undertakes a journey of discovery and survival.

Waru is a contemporary saltwater Lagaw Kazil (Island Children) story inspired by the totemic system of the green turtle – an interactive introduction to Torres Strait Islander culture for kids ages three to seven and their families.

Waru was created by Stephen Page, with Hunter Page-Lochard and Bangarra alumni Dancers and Choreographers Sani Townson and Elma Kris.

Leonora Adidi was language consultant and the characters in Waru were performed by Elma Kris (Aka Malu – storyteller) and Aba Bero (Migi).

Waru is a 45-minute production which hopes to open conversations about climate change, caring for the environment and the traditional cultural values of respect and reciprocity.

Three weeks of performances at The Studio Theatre at Bangarra during the NSW school holidays drew some favourable feedback on Bangara’s social media page: “My son absolutely loved Waru… I highly recommend anyone with small children to go to this. He still talks

Waru will be performed on 28-29 January 2023, Sutherland, Sydney.

It is also expected to tour Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales and the Northern Territory from September through to November in 2023.

• Demonstrated knowledge of Torres Strait Islander and/or Aboriginal culture, preferably in rela�on to the Torres Strait Region.

This posi�on is un�l 31st December 2024 and will be paid according to skills and experience. Salary sacrifice will be available. The incumbent will be subject to a six-month proba�onary period.

This posi�on is based on Thursday Island however no housing is allocated to this posi�on.

BY ALF WILSON Rothana Baira and her team mates are all agreed: lining up for the first Kulpiyam ladies team was an honour.

The side contested the ladies division at the Mackay Indigenous Allblacks carnival.

“We had three games on the Saturday – first up was Emu Masada Memorial and we fell short four points, then Hunters and we lost by six points and then we played John Wailu Memorial and won 34-nil,” Rhothana said.

“On Sunday we fell short in the quarter semi against Emu Masada Memorial by 2 points.”

Rothana said overall the girls had a great Carnival.

“It was good to come together as family as the Kulpiyam men’s team has been together for 22 years,” she said.

“So it was very emotional and blessed to be a part of, as I have watched my uncles,

Mother and daughter Ella-Faye Hosea-Peters and Elizabeth Hosea were the only two Waiben based players on the team, playing for whom they said was a special experience.

“It was so special for me and Liz cause we got to

represent our Badhu connection through my grandfather,” Ella-Faye said.

“And I guess another special thing about it was we got to honour the Late Uncle Pony Ahmat’s Family legacy Kulpiyam.

“Being around his kids and family over the weekend reminded me of the good old Island of Origin days where Uncle Pony and Uncle Wayne Guivarra hosted

these sports carnivals on Badhu as a way of bringing families together.”

Ella-Faye has been a tireless contributor to ladies rugby league in the Torres Strait and far north Queensland.

She coached the Northern United representative side which played Queensland Outback at Roma on Sunday 24 July.

Previously she coached schoolgirls teams from Tagai State College and the 2021 U/17 NQ United Girl’s team.

She has a proven track record of success in rugby league as a player, coach, and administrator.

She’s also was a founding member in 2010 of the powerful ladies’ side Deddeyal Gammaz which has since won seven Zenadth Kes rugby league grand final carnivals on Waiben, and two Island of Origin ladies’ division grand finals.

Badhu Campus Tagai State College teacher Laura Loucks (pictured right) was awarded the AFL Primary School Teacher of the Year for her volunteer work with AFL Cape York earlier this year.

The league’s National Volunteer of the Year Awards were presented by Toyota as Premier Partner of the AFL and a proud supporter of Australia’s game.

From the grassroots to the elite, volunteers were recognised in a ceremony in Melbourne.

The annual awards recognised volunteers across Australia who made outstanding contributions to community football.

All NAB AFL Auskick centres, schools, community clubs and leagues in each state and territory were invited to participate, with more than 1000 nominations received nationally.

“Well, it was a massive shock,” Laura said.

“I had no idea that I was being nominated.”

She said she felt fortunate to volunteer and that it was truly a team effort.

“It’s a nice win for everyone because it puts a great highlight on the needs and issues up here about accessing sport, home country, and also being able to work in partnerships with Tagai State College and AFL Cape York,” she said.

Laura grew up in the small rural town of Chesley, Canada but has now called Badhu her home for more than eight years.

She was the Torres Strait’s first-ever outer-island SWD (students with a

disability) teacher and commenced teaching on Warraber Island as a Year 4 to 6 teacher.

She immediately began building relationships with the community by running after-school sports, including Australian Football League.

“Thanks to AFL for their continued commitment through sport,” she said.

“It’s a very inclusive model that every child gets an experience of playing sport.

“By providing the sporting delivery opportunities, they are opening more doors for our kids to have choices in the future.”

As part of the award, Laura received tickets to the 2022 Toyota AFL Grand Final, all expenses paid, with a guest, and three nights of accommodation.

The nine national category winners also took part in the Toyota AFL Grand Final Parade in Melbourne.

New head for ZKJRL in 2023 Last weekend the whistle was passed from outgoing Zenadth Kes Junior Rugby League president Rees Davies to our new president Anthony Moynihan at the association’s AGM. They had what was described as “an amazing turn out” for the meeting.

Taipans win at home – at last!

STORY AND PICS christine howeS The Cairns Taipans enjoyed their first at home victory last Friday night, handing Melbourne United a thumping 25-point loss in a lopsided contest, finishing in a 97-72 victory.

The Taipans were defensively strong before they exploded offensively in the second half.

They led by as much as 40 points in the final quarter, the biggest lead a team has had this season.

The win was the result of some smothering defence from the Taipans, which forced Melbourne into shooting woes and lots of trouble keeping control of the ball.

Six Taipans scored in double-figures with Keanu Pinder finishing on his fourth doubledouble of the year with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

It was a satisfying comeback for Keanu,

who spent much of the previous week on the bench after being in trouble with fouls and missing those last few crucial minutes against the Kings.

“It always hurts when you get fouled out, especially when the game is so close,” he said at the time.

“But you got to stay there for your team, be strong and just encourage them on and yeah, that’s all I can do.”

Cairns forced a staggering 20 turnovers and held Melbourne to a 29 per cent shooting clip from long range, and only 44 per cent from the field.

Coach Adam Forde said it was a great effort.

“For us (the defensive end) is where the game is won and lost and the guys that we recruited bring it every day and every night,” he said.

“It was a great energy out there and I’m always supportive of anyone who backs us, and the loyal fans came out to support us in force tonight, so it was great.”

Outer Islands AFL in full swing

AFL Cape York’s Outer Island Game Development programs are in full-swing again this term.

AFL Cape York Development Coordinator Kieran Sciberras said visits were planned for 10 Tagai State College Campuses to finish the school year.

“Programs kicked off last week on Saibai Island, with

every student at school getting the opportunity to play mini AFL games and learn key fundamental movement skills,” he said.

“After-school AFL clinics were also a big hit with over 30 students staying for extra sessions on the oval each afternoon.

“AFL Cape York staff were also lucky enough to work with

Year 6 students during their school sleepover by running AFL sessions during the late afternoon and helping with activities organised

by Tagai State College staff in the evening.

“On Monday the AFL Cape York team arrived on Boigu Island to work with students at their school.”

He said it had been great so far.

“It’s not always easy for us to get to the Outer Islands for AFL clinics so we’d like to thank Tagai State College for their ongoing support,” he said.

Earlier this week Sea Swift provided in-kind support covering the cost of sending goalposts, AFL footballs and AFL backpacks

to various Tagai State College Campuses to ensure students in the Outer Islands didn’t miss out.

“Thanks to the Sea Swift team, a lot of these schools can keep playing AFL long after we’ve gone and keep practicing their skills until our next visit,” he said.
