Feds to fund Torres Strait Climate Change Centre for Excellence BY christine howeS
The Federal Government will provide $15.9 million over four years from 202223 to establish a Torres Strait Climate Change Centre of Excellence. The Centre will be designed to build the capability and capacity of Torres Strait Islander peoples to respond to climate change mitigation and adaption through integrating technical expertise with Traditional Knowledge, and deliver a Climate Warriors training program. A spokesperson for the Minister for Climate Change & Energy, Chris Bowen, told
the Torres News the initiative would look at identifying practical action on climate change with Torres Strait Islander and other First Nations peoples in Australia and across the Pacific. “Its purpose is to develop and deliver a regional response to climate change on sea-level rise and infrastructure, water and food security, sustaining and strengthening culture, economic stability, access to renewables and other opportunities,” he said. “The Centre will provide for local action through training ‘Climate Warriors’: local people who will share their knowledge to build
capacity of other First Nations peoples to develop practical and coordinated responses to climate change.” Torres Strait 8 Claimant Kabay Tamu said the announcement was the first time he heard about the funding, but he said anything to do with addressing the issue of climate change in the Torres Strait was good. “We welcome the investment into the region,” he said. “Not only to combat climate change but to look at adaptation as well, to support our people in the region.” He said they had only recently met with the Minister but hadn’t spoken
about the idea. “We are meeting with him again in a few weeks time in Canberra,” he said. “We will absolutely discuss this with him then. “It’s good to see the government has been listening to all the advocating we have been doing. “Especially with this type of investment, it’s very welcome and we’re very pleased about it, but we still have a long way to go – this is only a start, I think.” Minister Bowen’s spokesperson said First Nations communities had diverse and unique interests in renewable energy transformation.
“The transformation presents an exciting opportunity to engage First Nations groups to achieve a range of mutually beneficial outcomes,” he said. “Subject to the shared design process with our First Nations stakeholders, we anticipate that the centre will have a positive impact on several outcomes under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap and create local employment opportunities.” Torres Strait Regional Council Mayor Phillemon Mosby said the Torres Strait Island Regional Council welcomed the announcement. “We are so pleased to hear about this commitment
as it is something we at Council have been strongly advocating for,” he said. “TSIRC as a main service provider is looking forward to working closely with regional stakeholders and the Commonwealth to play a key role in this initiative. “I take this opportunity to further thank the Commonwealth for this and other commitments. “We will provide further announcements in the coming days on what this Budget could mean for our region.” SEE MORE ON THE FEDERAL BUDGET ON PAGES 2 & 4 AND IN OUR NEXT ISSUE
