Lui committed to easing cost of living issues Meetings to identify barriers and prioritise improvements to the region’s freight transport network are part of ongoing consultation local MP Cynthia Lui hopes will lead to easing cost of living pressures on families in the Torres Strait and NPA. “This consultation is ongoing, and the issue remains firmly on my agenda and the agenda of
our Government under Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk,” Ms Lui said. Stakeholders at the most recent meeting included Torres Cape Indigenous Council Alliance (TCICA), Local Government Association of Queensland, Queensland Transport and Logistics Council and Sea Swift. Ms Lui said she had also met
separately with Sea Swift CEO Dwayne Freeman to restate her concern for the communities and to commit to working together with industry to identify potential solutions. “The financial stress being felt by many living in these remote communities can be overwhelming,” she said. “We’re all becoming increasingly
familiar with the impact that supply chain issues can have on prices. “If you’re living in the very far north of the State, you’re often at the very end of those supply chains. “The price shocks tend to accumulate. “It’s critical that government and private enterprise collaborate to identify potential pathways to
alleviate some of the financial stress being felt by remote communities.” She said a Cabinet Budget Review Committee submission would be tabled by the Department of Transport and Main Roads in December 2022 which would identify a statewide approach to more effectively address freight disadvantage experienced by regional and remote communities.
