TSC struggles Lorenzo all-round winner as with ‘evolving NPA saddles up for rodeo fun economic pressures’ Preparation of the Torres Shire Council’s Budget for 2022-2023, adopted in July this year, was already challenging before the cost of delivering basic goods and services rose again due to a number of factors, the Council says in a statement released late on Monday afternoon. “After the budget was adopted SeaSwift increased their prices by 14.2 per cent from 1 September 2022, which, in turn has a cost impact on our Shire and on the delivery of infrastructure and other programs,” they said. “Council was mindful of a number of economic factors that contribute to financial sustainability in setting this year’s budget, not least of which is the additional cost of delivering this infrastructure, above the cost of goods and services. “Currently the cost allowance is 70 per cent (x 1.70) on top of purchase prices, a figure accepted by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority as representative of actual local costs.
“…Council is in a challenging position with this budget of having to do more with less.” Mayor Yen Loban said the Budget’s focus was always about reflecting the Council’s strategic direction while aiming to minimise any financial burden to the community. “In adopting its budget Council has made a deliberate decision to continue to focus on infrastructure for the coming year” he said. “Council continues to advocate on behalf of our community regarding the high costs of living that places a financial burden on the local community.” He said they were mindful of their obligation to deliver essential services such as roads, water, sewerage, rubbish collection and waste management “during an evolving fiscal environment”. He said he looked forward to speaking with the Premier of Queensland regarding these matters and others during the Cabinet’s visit to Waiben next week. Continued P3
