We got plenty Zageth to do The Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) hosted Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Minister for Indigenous Australians Linda Burney and Queensland Senator Nita Green on Waiben and Ngurupai last week.

TSRA Chairperson Napau Pedro Stephen AM said the prime ministerial visit strengthened partnerships between the Torres Strait and the Australian Government.

“The visit brought together national and local leadership on the topic of the Indigenous Voice and to share perspectives from the Torres Strait,” Mr Stephen said.

“Key topics included aspirations for climate change resilience and adaptation and community development, including economic and job opportunities for the region.”

The TSRA connected the national leaders with diverse representatives from the region, including Traditional Owners, Elders and young people, community organisations and business owners, artists, TSRA Board and all levels of government.

“We are ready for this new era of working together to continue advocating and carrying the voices of island communities from the Torres Strait to Canberra,” he said.

Women’s Health Week targets five main themes Women’s Health Week will be celebrated in the first week of September with a host of activities and information sessions centred on the Island Stars Cultural Centre, Sibuwani Ngurpai Meta (Thursday Island Primary Healthcare Centre) and at the Seisia Fishing Club.

Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service Mobile Women’s Health Clinical Nurse Consultant Jennifer McKay said there would be stalls, information sharing and activities from Monday 5 to Friday 9 September at the Island Stars Cultural Centre where every day of the week will have a different women’s health theme in place.

“At the start of the week we will

be focussing on women’s health checks,’’ Ms McKay said.

“Tuesday will be menopause theme day, then pelvic floor and pelvic pain on Wednesday, mind health on Thursday and physical health activity on the Friday.

“In addition, women’s health checks will be available every day of the week at Sibuwani, not just on the Monday at Island Stars.’’

Ms McKay said the daily themes were in line with the five main health themes for this year’s national Jean Hailes Women’s Health Week, now in its 10th year.

“In addition to the Thursday Island events, over in the Northern Peninsula Area, a special day of activities will be held at the Seisia

[Women’s Health] week was dedicated to good health and well-being for women, girls and gender-diverse people.

“At Seisia, the health service will be showcasing local women’s arts and crafts and provide a safe space where women can yarn with health professionals and ask questions regarding their health care.

on if they feel uncomfortable to speak out their concern or query.

“The cards will be placed in a box and questions will be read out, without identification, thereby allowing their query to be addressed with confidentiality.’’

Ms McKay said the week was dedicated to good health and well-being for women, girls and gender-diverse people.

“During the week, we encourage all women to host or take part in an event centred on health, connect with others in their community, look after their health and access valuable health information,’’ she said.

“The aim of the week is to raise awareness of the need for women to

prioritise their health and well-being so they can be there to support their families.’’

Ms McKay said there was still time for people and organisations to get involved in this year’s Women’s Health Week activities.

COVID and flu still cause for concern Laboratory-confirmed influenza cases across the Torres & Cape Hospital and Health Services region have remained steady at just under 500, but continue to be a concern to communities.

There are also 78 active COVID-19 cases, including 19 on Waiben, seven on Saibai, eight on Ugar as well as cases on Badu and in Bamaga and Umagico.

TCHHS Chief Executive Beverley Hamerton said there were no influenza-related hospitalisations.

“Despite the slowdown in case numbers, vaccination remains vital to continue protecting yourself, your loved ones, and the community from COVID-19 and influenza,” she said.

“Vaccination can reduce the severity of symptoms and prevent the need for people to be hospitalised.

“This is especially important for Queenslanders aged over 50 years as this age group accounts for around 97 per cent of COVID-19 deaths across the state.

“But as well as vaccination, it is important we also continue practising measures such as physical distancing, wearing a mask when unable to distance, handwashing, and staying home if unwell.

“Wearing a mask whenever out in public is good advice for all residents, but especially if you are elderly or immuno-compromised.

It is also recommended when indoors and you can’t physically distance, for instance when at shopping centres or at schools – or attending large gatherings.

“This is especially important over the next few weeks as our health service is aware a number of celebrations and mass gathering events are planned across the region.

“As we have seen since the start of the pandemic, these types of events can result in spikes in COVID-19 numbers.

“Please contact your local health facility if you want advice or support in planning your event.”

Masig: one people, one region, one voice Torres Shire, Torres Strait Island and Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council Mayors have put forward a document called ‘The Masig Statement’ on their ambitions for achieving sovereignty in the Torres Strait by 2037 as part of celebrations to mark the 85th anniversary of the first Torres Strait Islander Council meeting held on Masig.

Regional leaders, Elders and community members spoke to the statement as part of regional leaders’ forum – Kuyku Mabaygal Wakaywoeyan Forum

– covering topics from autonomy to the Voice to Parliament held over two days.

Events were kicked off by a Community Combined Service followed by an evening of entertainment last Sunday.

Leaders past and present were in attendance including Rev Ned Mosby, Cr Hilda Mosby, Mayor Philemon Mosby, Cr John Abednego, Getano Lui OAM, Ned David, Mayor Yen Loban, Deputy Mayor Gabriel Bani, Mayor Patricia Yusia and former-NPA Mayor/TSRA chair Dr Joseph Elu AO.

Current TSRA chair Pedro Stephen, Senator Nita Green and local MP Cynthia Lui were also there.

On Monday night the regional leaders round table was followed by entertainment and sporting activities, with a talk from Thomas Mayor on the Voice to Parliament to finish the evening.

On Tuesday the Masig Dance Group led the way to the community hall where speakers and dancers acknowledged the historic Masig Statement.

The statement said its purpose in part was

“to pursue and achieve self-determination and regional autonomy”.

It also said they had the right to “freely determine our political status and to freely pursue our economic, social and cultural development”.

It said they would therefore work with regional stakeholders and government to equip them to achieve these goals.

Last week TSIRC Mayor Philemon Mosby told The Australian newspaper they were “not asking to be a separate state”.

“We are asking them to better organise so

money comes into one body of government and overheads are reduced,” he said.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Torres Strait Islanders were “a very much valued part of our nation of Australia” and had offered their unanimous support for the Voice and their support for recognition in the Australian Constitution when he visited them, also last week.

Queensland Cabinet to meet in Torres Strait The Queensland Cabinet will meet on Thursday Island early next month.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said she welcomed the opportunity for locals to meet directly with members of the Cabinet about local issues.

Torres Strait issues heard by PM

By Sylvia Tabua & christine howeS As part of the Prime Minister’s visit to the Torres Strait it was inevitable other issues, such as climate change and housing, were also discussed within the context of the Voice to Parliament.

“One of the things that a Voice will need to do is to make sure in its structure that minorities within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are also represented and have their voice heard,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said.

“So on issues like climate change, we know that the Torres Strait Island will be more impacted.

“Many of them of course are low lying.

“I visited a number of them that are susceptible, particularly the ones in the middle, that are coral based, very low lying and are susceptible to rising sea levels.

“So that will be very important.”

He said housing was another important issue.

“The other issue in terms of making sure that people are heard is that people will have a diversity of issues facing them,” he said.

“Now, in different parts of Australia, housing is an acute issue here, of course, on the islands themselves space is an issue.

“There’s even a difference between here and on the peninsula, around Cape York, from communities there, there’s more space available, but there are other challenges as well.

“So a Voice will be able to express views and have that input for issues that are of concern for Indigenous people.

“And one of the things we know is that for 121 years, decisions have been made in Canberra.

“With the best of intentions, some of those have not gone as well as they might have.”

He said the most successful programs had direct input.

“I think there’s a common thread that where Indigenous people have been consulted directly on matters that affect them, they have been the programs that have been most successful,” he said.

“You look at areas like Indigenous Rangers, that has been very successful in providing productive employment, making a positive difference to the natural environment, making a positive difference to economic activity as well.

“And that’s because there’s that sense of ownership there, it’s from the bottom up, if you like.

“That is the sort of issue that says to me, of why I think the Voice will be successful, in closing the gap in health, education, housing, life

expectancy, is that if you give people that sense of ownership over their lives, then you will get far better outcomes than if people are sitting in an office building in Canberra, making decisions on behalf of Communities so far away without that input and without that advice.”

He said Torres Strait leaders had been very supportive.

“They’re very supportive, but we’ve also had a range of other discussions including about CDP, about employment,” Mr Albanese said.

“And there again, the theme that we’ve heard, myself and Linda Burney and Nita Green is that they want employment that’s real and they want employment that’s controlled locally, the input not just for the sake of it. one that actually makes a difference to people’s lives, like the CDP used to in

terms of providing training and skills and a real job, is what people want.

“So that’s been an issue.

“The issue of governance arrangements, financing, access to fishing, there’s a whole range of issues, of course, have been raised, as you would expect, but it’s been incredibly positive.”

He said the TSRA was an example of different communities working together.

“One of the things about the TSRA is that it now provides a bit of a model in that you have a body that has representatives from different communities,” he said.

“It gets together and advocates – is a voice to State and Federal Parliament.

“So it shows that you can get improvements, that you can have a functioning organisation that functions well, and that is able to speak up on issues.”

All state Ministers back Voice Ministers responsible for Indigenous Affairs from all States and Territories and the Commonwealth met via videoconference the day before the Prime Minister’s visit to the Torres Strait, to discuss the Implementation of the Uluru Statement from the Heart and other key priorities.

In a Communique released by Minister Linda Burney after the meeting, they acknowledged the valuable contribution that First Nations peoples make both in Australia’s rich history and bright future, and agreed to continue to back the Australian Government’s work towards an Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Voice to the Australian Parliament enshrined in the constitution, as outlined in the Uluru Statement.

“This reflects a shared desire from all jurisdictions to put progress on recognition and better outcomes for First Nations peoples above politics,” they said.

“The Ministers discussed some of the practical steps for implementing voice arrangements, including at a regional level, that would enable First Nations people to work in partnership with all levels of government to improve policies, programs and service delivery in their regions.

“This work will build on and align with existing and emerging arrangements currently supported by states, territories and the Commonwealth.

“The Ministers provided updates on processes to advance truth-telling and treaty in their relevant jurisdictions.

“The Ministers also discussed the

Australian Government’s commitment to replace the Community Development Program and the upcoming Jobs and Skills Summit, both of which will be pivotal to delivering real jobs, proper wages and decent conditions regardless of where people live.

“All governments emphasised their strong ongoing commitment to working together to improve practical outcomes for First Nations peoples.

“Ministers will meet again, with the Coalition of Peaks and the Australian Local Government Association, at the Joint Council for Closing the Gap meeting at the end of the month to discuss progress against the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.”

Prime Minister lends an ear to Voice

By Sylvia Tabua & christine howeS Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Indigenous Affairs Minister Linda Burney and Queensland Senator Nita Green spent two days in the Torres Straits to sit with elected representatives from the TSRA and local government to get their input on a Voice to Parliament and Constitutional change.

“It is really important that we get as much input as possible into the process leading up to a referendum to have an enshrined voice to Parliament in the Constitution,” he said.

“But also, of course, that would be a recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our Constitution.”

He said he was heartened by the responses he had from local Torres Strait leaders.

“I put at the Garma festival out there a proposed question, but also a draft of what the constitutional change might look like to make it clear that it’s about consultation with Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people about issues that affect their daily lives and affect them,” he said.

“So I think this is a really important thing that my government is very, very keen to advance.

“And, of course, everyone we

met with today from the Torres Strait Regional Authority, but also from the council’s were all very supportive of the Voice.

“I was very heartened by the response.”

He said he was confident Australians would support the referendum, a date for which was yet to be determined.

“One of the things I want to happen here and it’s part of the reason for my visit, is I want this to be owned by the Australian people

by Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians,” he said.

“So this isn’t my idea or my thing that I have an ownership over, I want people to talk these issues through.

“And we’re doing that having the conversation, having the conversation in our cities, our towns, our regions and our islands, about what it would mean.”

He said part of those discussions was to develop more detail about the structure of the Voice.

“This is going to be an exercise that is aimed at best practice and then continually is gotten better,” he said.

“It would be just with every other piece of legislation before the Parliament, it changes over a period of time.

“I think that the big debate that has to be won, from my perspective in order to get a successful outcome on The Voice, is that we need to win

the debate that says it’s not either a Voice and constitutional change or practical difference to close the gap.

“The Voice and constitutional change and recognition and giving people respect is a step on the path to closing the gap as well - the two things are linked.”

He said he was hopeful.

“I’m just very hopeful that it will be positive,” he said.

“And I think it would say that we’re more mature as a nation.

“That’s why would be a positive moment for Australia’s development.

“You know, we need to be truthful about our history and the the mistreatment that occurred for, you know and continues, if you look at Indigenous disadvantage, some of that is structural, which is there.

“We need to acknowledge that as a step, in order to then move forward.

“It’s not to do an issue of guilt or finger pointing, but how do we how do we do better?

“The whole country is strengthened if everyone has an opportunity in life to better themselves.

“And if everyone’s lifted up, that’s a way that you build national unity.

“So I think it is an opportunity for us to unite the nation and to advance and to say to the world, we’re being positive.”

Torres Strait Islanders have made it very clear they want to be involved in discussions about the Voice to Parliament Indigenous Affairs Minister Linda Burney, who travelled with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to the region, says.

“We’re talking to the people of the Torres Strait about the support for a Voice, the very fact that they have made it very clear that they’d like to be involved in the discussions and the make-up of the Voice,” she said.

“And we’re also talking to them about a whole range of other issues, particularly about employment, about things like housing and also the governance of the Torres Strait.

“They have expressed to both the Prime Minister and myself the desire to be involved, the desire to

be consulted, and they have talked very clearly about the various governance structures that they have got in place up here, including the Torres Strait Regional Authority.

“And they’re all things that we should be considering very deeply as we go forward and start talking about the design of the Voice.”

She said they commitment from all the state ministers to back the referendum was critical.

“They are all, even the states of Tasmania and New South Wales, absolutely committed to working with the Commonwealth in relation to the implementation of the Uluru Statement and in particular, of course, the first thing cab off the rank, and that is the referendum,” she said.

“They have all absolutely and enthusiastically committed to that.”

PM says Torres Strait a ‘majestic place’ Torres Strait Islanders live in a “majestic place” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told broadcaster Sylvia Tabua in the 4MW studios on Waiben last week.

“I’m very jealous of the beautiful part of the world where you live,” he said.

“It’s a majestic place, there’s no question about that.”

He said it was his fourth visit to the Torres Strait.

“I came and was a member of the committee that looked at greater autonomy for Torres Strait Islanders and reported in 1997,” he said.

“I came as a part of the preparation and those public hearings so I went to Mer, St. Paul’s, York, Darnley, Saibai, Horn, TI as well as communities on the mainland like Bamaga and Seisia.

“I came back as well, on a couple of occasions as the Federal Minister for Transport.

“We looked at and funded an upgrade of the airport on Horn Island at that time, I also, as I came here with my maritime hat on as the person presiding over the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, looking at passage through the Torres Strait, and those issues, there was an AMSA vessel, of course, was operating at the time.

“So I’ve had a number of visits here, it’s quite exciting, though to be back.

“It’s very different coming back, of course, as the 31st Prime Minister of Australia.”

On this visit Mr Albanese said he enjoyed lunch and appreciated the very warm welcome he had received.

TODAY Thursday 25 & TOMORROW Friday 26 Queensland road safety week is this week, from Monday August 22 un�l tomorrow, Friday August 26, with this year’s theme being ROAD SAFETY STARTS WITH ME. Officers are proac�vely engaged in road safety educa�on around the island along with conduc�ng enforcement focusing on the fatal five, licence and vehicle checks will also be conducted.

that is currently being ran on Thursday Island. The ini�a�ve is to encourage children to think about road safety and when observed by officer to be doing the right thing the officers take their details and they go into the draw. Awards will be presented at the school assemblies with a cer�ficate and prize.

Road safe behaviours is not just limited to wearing helmets when riding bicycles, scooters and e-scooters, or obeying the road rules. It also includes things like crossing the road correctly, wearing a seat belt when in a vehicle.

Ac�ng Sergeant Stevens had created a colouring compe��on which is open to all kids in the Torres Straits, which closes TOMORROW, Friday August 26.

The idea of the compe��on is to allow the students to come up with their own slogans and drawings to show what is important to them about road safety specifically for Thursday Island.

The winner will be announced at the school assemblies with an award and a cer�ficate.

Two former sailors have been welcomed back on board in Cairns with their appointments as Navy’s first Indigenous Elders.

Pioneering the roles supporting the Navy Indigenous Development Program (NIDP) are Aunty Fran Visini and Uncle Phillip Bowie, who have re-enlisted in the recently established general mariner reservist category.

The Navy Indigenous Development Program is based at HMAS Cairns and offers Aboriginal Australian & Torres Strait Islanders a taste of life as a member of the Australian Defence Force.

Officer in charge NIDP Lieutenant Commander Christopher Thornton said the Elders would provide cultural support and advice to recruits, while also guiding staff.

“My staff and I feel extremely fortunate to have Aunty Fran and Uncle Phillip wanting to be part of our program, they have already helped put our recruits’ minds at ease knowing they will be provided with elder cultural support during their training,” Lieutenant Commander Thornton said.

“The fact they were sailors beforehand is just a bonus as they can speak from personal experience to our recruits who are considering going on into the Navy from our program.”

Aunty Fran worked for two years at HMAS Harman and Albatross as a steward.

A love of the uniform inspired her to join at 17 in 1970 – she wanted to be like a neighbour she watched arriving home in her smart Navy attire.

She now sees her role as providing support and culturally mentoring recruits.

“I’m passionate about improving the lives of young people and I look forward to inspiring, leading and supporting our next generation of Indigenous Australians and service personnel,” Aunty Fran said.

She hopes to help recruits develop confidence and inspire them to do great things with their lives.

“I just want a chance to influence the young recruits and convey the message that they should follow their dreams and have the courage to try,” Aunty Fran said.

Uncle Phillip joined in 1965 and trained at HMAS Leeuwin as a marine technician and before serving for nearly nine years in the ships Melbourne, Stalwart, Paluma and Barbette.

“I am excited about sharing my experiences, and I can spin a good yarn about my time that may help the young recruits,” Uncle Phillip said.

“I would like them to think of me as someone they can talk to if they find themselves in a difficult position or just need advice.”

Uncle Phillip said he hoped recruits would graduate with better understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.

New lunchtime activities have their attention!

Island dancing, giant Jenga, ukulele, choir, basketball skills and a Lego challenge are some of the new lunchtime activities on offer at Waybeni Buway Ngurpay Mudh as part of their new lunchtime schedules.

Recently-appointed permanent Head of Campus Rick Cass said staff had indicated they were keen to get more playtime activities underway during breaks for both student and staff wellbeing.

“Our Deputy, Mr Jones, operationalised the new lunchtime arrangements, which include a new eating time, plus wellbeing and mindfulness activities facilitated by teachers, all of which has resulted in an even happier school,” he said.

“Attendance has also improved.”

Path to Treaty ‘beyond exciting’ BY christine howeS The State Government’s response to the Treaty Advancement Committee Report was released last week, with the promise of a First Nations Treaty Institute and a Truth Telling and Healing Inquiry to be established in legislation.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said telling the truth about Queensland’s history was an important first step in the Path to Treaty process.

“We can’t change the past, but together we can create a new future for our state,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“Today, we have released our government’s response to the Treaty Advancement Committee Report as part of the state’s Path to Treaty.

“We have accepted all 22 of the report’s recommendations either in full or in principle.

“Treaty is about finding a place where we can face up to our shared history and be truthful about all of it – good and bad – and build a future together where we value, trust, and respect each other.”

At the launch, the Premier signed a Statement of Commitment with First Nations leaders and hundreds of guests in a historic ceremony.

Reconciliation Queensland Co-Chair Danielle Ah Boo said it was an historic day.

“It was very, very emotional for people like Dr Jackie Huggins who have been fighting for so many years for recognition of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people,” she said.

“And so unique as well,

“So have we got a long way to go, absolutely, but there are now exciting times, and the momentum is really here right now, where we can take this to the next step.

“There’s a lot of raising awareness that needs to be done, and a lot of education, and it is likely we will go to referendum in the next 12 months or so.”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told 4MW this week the Voice to Parliament would not affect issues around sovereignty and would support current statebased approaches to treaties.

“It’s all very positive,” he said.

“The Uluru Statement from the Heart, speaks about Voice, Truth, Treaty, so the state’s undertaking in Queensland made a big step this

week, the process of advancing treaty.

“The truth telling process through a Makarrata Commission will, of course, feed into that federally as well, as some of the states have advanced some of that process as well.

“But I see a Voice as being very critical to have that input, as these issues advance of treaty making, of course treaty making isn’t one size fits all, there are different circumstances across the country.”

Ms Ah Boo said Reconciliation Queensland had an important role to play in raising awareness “As co-chair of Reconciliation Queensland, it’s important for me to be part of that raising awareness of what this referendum means to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people,” she said.

“So that’s such a priority for us in the very near future, and to also support where the Premier and Minister Craig Crawford are now taking steps towards Treaty in Queensland.

“It’s beyond exciting times, beyond.”

The Tombstone unveiling of our late brother William Miller Cook on the 25th of June has been a big success. On behalf of the Cooks, Nakata, Ober & Sipi families, we say thank you to Father Stephen, the Marigeths and extended families for their involvement and assistance. A special mention to the people who worked with Nicholas Loban and Clint Seden to coordinate and develop a completed memorial foundation.

Thank you to Uncle Alo Cook and Aunty Silen David Senior for officially taking part in unveiling the Tombstone of our late brother and to all the other families that helped prepare and cook the food to feed our invited guests and those who have assisted with the decorating.

Acknowledgment to the Kup Mari boys at Nicholas Sabatino’s place and the ladies who helped also, under the guidance of Thomas Loban. We acknowledge and appreciate all the hunters, from the seafood to dear & bullock meat for your time and effort in gathering for the day. We want to thank all the immediate and extended families of the Abednego’s, Pau’s, Sailor’s, Tamwoy’s, Kiwat’s, Newie’s, Binawel’s, David’s, Kris’s, Namok’s, Baker’s and Stephen’s for their involvement and support. Alau Eagles will return next year, with thanks to ZKRL

BY ALF WILSON Alau Eagles entry into the Zenadth Kes Rugby League competition for season 2022 was successful in its bid to reboot the sport in the NPA area, and especially the community of Umagico, the club says.

“We as players of Alau Eagles came together in early November of 2021 to find a solution on how we can revive Rugby League in our community,” spokesperson Angelo Toby told the Torres News.

“Not only to play the sport but also for the well being and health of our people and the younger generations to come.

“The solution we came up with was to join ZKRL.” Mr Toby said the NPA had not had an active comp

since 2019, which had affected the men and women of NPA in many ways.

“Rugby League always has been the main sport played in our region,” he said.

“We’re grateful ZKRL gave us the opportunity to join their competition not only as players but as a club from another region outside of the Torres Strait.

“And we appreciate the support the locals on TI have shown towards the club.

“We can’t thank them enough for the respect you have shown throughout the season.

“And also to our supporters back home in Alau – thank you for always being there for the club no matter what.”

“We were lucky enough to have two of our most improved players this

year represent NQ United, Mikalec Young and Eliwees Anau, who travelled to Roma to play their first ever representative game and the boys loved every moment of it.

“We are working hard to get a few more in the door in the coming years.

“I am confident because we have a lot of talent in our backyard.

“Outcomes like this really send a positive message throughout our community and the feeling is very rewarding knowing full well we are starting to make a change.”

At the completion of the 15 rounds of fixtures for the five club comp in August, Roosters led the points table with 21 from Mulga on 15, Suburbs 12, Pioneer Knights 7 and Alau Eagles 5.

Mr Toby said Alau Eagles did have minor setbacks over the year.

“We had to make the hard decision to forefeit two games because of unforeseen circumstances, which really put a dent in our race to be in the top four to compete in the finals,” he said.

“But learning from this will only make things better for 2023 when we return to Ken Brown to compete in the ZKRL for another season of footy.

“We are so excited and cannot wait.”

He said at the time he was extremely proud of himself for the 50 metre run he took down the sideline to score. He and Eliwees Anau were selected for the rep side earlier this year and travelled to Roma by plane and bus.

NQ Cowboys sit second on the ladder with two to play

BY ALF WILSON North Queensland Cowboys sounded alarm bells to the other NRL teams headed for the finals with a handsome 48-4 win over the Warriors last Friday night at Townsville’s Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

Reuben Cotter and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow played their part in the big win both coming off the interchange bench.

With just two rounds to go before the finals series commences, the Cowboys are sitting second on the ladder.

Reigning premiers the Penrith Panthers lead the table on 40 points from the Cowboys and Cronulla Sharks (both 34), Melbourne Storm (32), Parramatta Eels (30), South Sydney Rabbitohs and Sydney Roosters,

Brisbane Broncos (all 28).

The Cowboys have a superior for and against differential (+252) than the Sharks (+171) but face a tougher draw in their last two rounds as they hope for a top two finish and a home final.

Cowboys will meet top sides South Sydney and Penrith Panthers whilst the Sharks meet lowly Bulldogs and Newcastle Knights.

On current form however the Cowboys have a great chance of winning both of their remaining games to wrap up that important double chance and the home final.

Last Friday night’s huge crowd paid tribute to the late Cowboys coach Paul Green who guided the team to their historic 2015 premiership win.

FOOTNOTE: Several lucky Waiben residents backed the

Cowboys early in the season at the juicy odds of 83-1.

That has dropped dramatically to 10-1 following the charge up the ladder in season 2022 following their 15thy place last year.

Meanwhile PNG star Justin Olam scored two tries in the Melbourne Storm’s 60-12 win over the Brisbane Broncos in round 23.

And Sebastian Kris, who has played at the Zenadth Kes carnival on Waiben, scored two tries in the Canberra Raiders 28-22 win over the Newcastle Knights on Sunday in NRL round 23.

Edrick Lee scored a try for the Knights, who also had a top player in outside back Dane Gagai.

Kris and Gagai had a great battle marking each other and both set up a try for their teams.

Last week’s 2022 Torres Strait/ Northern Peninsula Area Crusader Cup was huge AFL Cape York Development Coordinator Keiran Sciberras says.

“This has been the biggest Crusader Cup on Thursday Island in years,” he said.

“It’s great to see the interest in AFL is growing.

“This event is the first step in our AFL Talent pathway – with students from this event eligible to join our Crusaders talent program next year.

“Our Crusaders talent program sees a combined team from Cape York, Torres Strait, the Cook region and Gulf Savannah travel down south to play off against the best junior players from around Queensland.

“For some of our young people this carnival is their first time playing AFL in a competitive environment.”

He said the Thursday Island Lions, made up of students from Tagai State College and Sacred Heart Thursday Island campuses, were undefeated and took home this year’s Crusader Cup. “Even if your team doesn’t win every game, today is about a lot more than just the scoreboard,” he said.

“When we’re selecting young people for our representative program, we also look for people who are displaying the AFL Cape York values of pride, responsibility and respect, both on and off the field.

“These are the first things we look at before we even consider AFL skills and ability.”

He said there were many people to thank.

Sam Wakata-Binjuda from Tagai State College (Thursday Island Campus) and Tai’shaelah Ahmat – NPA State College (Bamaga Junior Campus) took home the carnival’s male and female Most Valuable Player honours.

“It’s one thing to have so many boys and girls interested in playing footy – it’s another to be able to get them all here together to actually play each other,” he said.

“I’d like to thank the staff from NPA State College, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School and Tagai State College for giving their young people the opportunity to play in this event.

“I’d also like to thank our volunteers who helped make gameday run smoothly, the team from 4MW radio for coming down and interviewing the players, and the Torres Strait Regional Authority for helping us to provide healthy eating options and nutrition education for our participants.”

He said football programs would continue in the coming weeks in the region, with in-school AFL at NPA State College campuses and the much anticipated high school AFL carnival.

“The Chris Johnson and Angie Nadredre (CJAN) Cup will see students from Tagai College, NPA State College, Mount St Bernard and AFL Cape York Boys and Girls House battle it out on the AFL field,” he said.

“The Cup will be held in the NPA on Wednesday 31 August.”

Roosters hot favourites for ZKRL semi-finals

BY ALF WILSON Roosters will go into this coming Saturday’s qualifying semi final the hottest of favourites after beating Mulga Tigers 66-6 last weekend.

Reigning premiers Roosters scored twelve tries to Tabua Woosup (3), Stewart Sabatino, Vincent Mau, Daniel Nona,

Henley Woosup, Alwyn Bond, Lyle Bowie, Brendan Magala and McFarlene Baira.

One scorer was not available on the QRL sheet.

Brendan Magala kicked seven goals, and Henley Woosup one.

The try scorer for Badhu side Mulga Tigers was Frankie Cook.

In the earlier elimination

semi final Pioneer Knights beat Suburbs 36-20.

Pioneer Knights scored seven tries courtesy of Jordan Neliman, Ernest Sailor, Harry Kris, Ricardo Gela, Eliaso Seriat, Bauz Harry and William Neliman.

Dabus Mauga booted three goals.

For Suburbs Theodore

Mosby scored a try and the names of the other three were not available.

Kailu George booted two goals for Suburbs.

Mulga Tigers and Pioneer Knights will meet in Saturday’s (27 August) preliminary final.

The winner will advance to the big dance or grand final the following Saturday,

3 September.

In last Saturday’s women’s game at the Rock, Pioneer Dames defeated NPA United 22-4.

There is one more game this Saturday between Suburbs Ladies and NPA United.

Pioneer Dames went through undefeated and finished first.
