Queensland Rugby League Chairman Bruce Hatcher told Radio 4MW it was a pleasure to be there. “TI has been an area that has really been part of Cairns Pride’s territory and they put in a lot of hard work to to get us to make the right decision, so here we are today,” he said.
“I really enjoy the fact that we’ve had the opportunity to bring the game up here. “What we have tried to do is respect and regard the communities in which rugby league is played.” Northern Pride CEO Gareth Smith said they had been welcomed with open arms. “It’s been overwhelming to be honest, but it’s a real privilege to be here and we’re very grateful,” he said. All in all it was a huge weekend after a massive week of football clinics culminating in an exciting program of games played over two fields at the Ken Brown Oval. In the main game, Northern Pride wore a memorial jersey to honour the late Francis Maia Mosby, who was part of Northern Pride Development and passed away ten years ago. QRL Competition Manager David Maiden said it was special. “I was at the Pride when we lost our warrior, so this year is 10 year anniversary was something that we wanted. “To come back and honour his memory, bring a country game back here, make sure we caught up with the family, make sure
that we honoured him appropriately, given that rugby league was his passion. “He was a great part of Northern Pride.” Gareth said they particularly wanted to thank the family for having them. “I think that it’s a very important thing for me, as the leader of the club, making sure that we pay tribute to that and likewise to the entire region,” he said. “We were very privileged, we made a commitment and we’re going to stick to that, I think, not just for for Francis, but for the Torres Strait region and our entire footprint, we are going to represent.” See our full coverage and more pics on Pages 12 & 13
