Waiben JUMPS for NAIDOC week Waiben enjoyed a series of small community events to celebrate NAIDOC last week, encouraging all of us to Get Up, Stand Up, Show Up, as per the national theme.

From a TSIMA outside broadcast on Wednesday, which included being part of an online event with Anglicare in South Australia, to Youth Arts Workshops at Lagaw Thithui Cultural Centre lead by Island Stars Dance team and Joey Laifoo, there was sure to be something for everyone.

There were also open days at Torres Health and Meriba Ged Ngalpun Mab and several organisations held their

own morning teas to help celebrate the week’s theme.

Our NAIDOC Week concluded with a march followed by the Port Kennedy Association markets and music in Anzac Park.

The crowd favourite by a long way was the Colour Fun Run hosted by the TI Deadly Runners after the march, where a messy load of fun was had by anyone within several metres of the event at any time!

MEANWHILE a fourth booster has been made available for those aged 30-49.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has updated its recommendations for a winter dose of COVID-19 vaccine to help reduce severe disease from the emerging surge of Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariant infections, and to reduce the burden on Australian hospitals and the healthcare system in coming months.

The updated recommendations are: • Adults aged 50 to 64 years are now recommended to receive a winter booster dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

• Adults aged 30 to 49 years can receive a winter booster dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, however the benefit for people in this age group is less certain.

• The interval recommended between a recent SARS-CoV-2 infection or the first booster dose and a winter booster dose is now three months.

By Jillian Bowie As part of Small Business Month a Torres Strait small business networking event was held on Masig last week, hosted by Gur A Baradharaw Kod (GBK) and attended by several small business owners from around the region.

Special guest speaker was Kuku Yalanji man Juan Walker from Walkabout Cultural Adventures, who works around Mossman, north of Cairns, and shared his journey of owning and operating his small tourism business, the challenges he has faced and his successes over his 15 years of operation.

“It is very important to share different aspects of running a business, the problems faced when running a business and how to overcome those issues,” Juan said.

“The best way to do that is to come together, yarn, have a good talk, and share experiences.”

GBK Activity Manager Neville Johnstone and Strait Experience co-founder Fraser Nai facilitated the event.

Its purpose was for small business owners to learn about support services available, share some knowledge around the elements of business, and look at ways they could move forward supporting each other.

Fraser explained the significance of the honour board at the community hall venue and how participants could use that as a reference point.

He said the hall was where our Athes met for the first time as Councillors, at the same venue on 23 August 1937, and set up a western

“This year will be 85 years since that event,” Fraser said.

“It was interesting to know that our small gathering at the very same spot, talked about where we could take that, and create another point of reference in history to the business owners of our future.

“We are creating businesses on things that really matter to us and on the dreams of people that will impact their community and inspire others to do something amazing.”

Small business owner of KTown Grass Cutting Bob Kaigey said it was a surprise to see the variety of businesses and interests in communities.

“One of the things that inspired me was when bala Juan shared on how to challenge the fear that comes with starting your own business,” Bob said.

“It made me reflect back to the first councillors in 1937 that first talked about issues we faced in the Torres Strait.

“85 years later here we are talking about the same issues.”

Juan said the area he was from featured an existing, wellestablished tourism industry with Port Douglas just down the road.

He said here in the Torres Strait it was new, so there was a lot of opportunity for Traditional Owners to develop the tourism industry their own way.

“They can build it the way they want to build it, rather than being dominated by outside tourism in an already established sector,” Juan said.

“We have an opportunity through business to look after ourselves and after our own people without relying on government.”

Neville said taking the forum to the outer islands for the first time opened opportunities for grass roots individuals.

“Our mandate is to protect the rights and interests of Traditional Owners,” Neville said.

“We are in a position now, with partners like Department of Employment, Small Business and Training (DESBIT) and

TSRA, to make sure these opportunities land on all our communities.

“That is our role at GBK for employment, training, and workforce development.

“We want to keep these conversations going through regular meetings and workshops, to talk about the issues and barriers that we have and to make sure we are solving these issues as we go along together.

“It will only work if we do this together.”

He said GBK and its partners wanted to create a stronger support network around small businesses for Torres Strait Islanders.

Fraser said partnerships should create a movement of people starting small businesses over the next 10 years.

“It is a commitment that anyone can do in their own small way,” he said.

“Do not be afraid. Have a go. We are all here to help you build your dream.”

TSRA backs NAIDOC

As part of NAIDOC Week 2022, the TSRA sponsored the Muyngu Koekaper Dance team from Saibai to perform to a crowd of 1400 guests at the 2022 National NAIDOC Week Awards Ceremony in Narrm (Melbourne) earlier this month.

TSRA Acting Chairperson Horace Baira said they were proud to support the opportunity to showcase our culture.

“The TSRA also congratulates all 2022 National NAIDOC Week Awards nominees and winners on their tremendous contributions and advocacy in their communities and across Australia,” he said.

“NAIDOC Week is a time to celebrate the many who have driven and led change in our communities over generations, they have been the heroes and champions of change, of equal rights and even basic human rights.”

TSRA Chief Executive Officer Vonda Malone said NAIDOC Week was a time to come together and reflect on our journeys, achievements and moments in time that have

shifted the positive direction of First Nations peoples’ rights.

“It is also an opportunity for people from all walks of life to look towards a united future,” she said.

“Beyond NAIDOC Week, we must continue to amplify the voices and achievements of our people.”

This year TSRA staff celebrated NAIDOC Week with cultural activities at the Gab Titui Cultural Centre.

The Centre also participated in the much-anticipated return of the live Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) from 6 to 10 July, at its new venue the Cairns Convention Centre, to feature Torres Strait artists including Goeynaw Isua (Waibene), Abai Ishmael Gibuma (Boigu) and Nickie Mackie (Poruma) and support Boigu dance team, Poeypiyam, to perform throughout the week.

BY VELMA GARA After two years online, CIAF – the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair – returned last week, to a new venue which hosted more than 600 talented First Nations visual and performing artists sharing their arts and culture with more than 50,000 visitors onand off-site.

Drawing on First Nation Peoples knowledge of plants and trees, this year’s theme was Masters of Country and it didn’t disappoint.

CIAF’s six days of events started with the symposium and included the opening night, awards, fashion parade, sculpture showcase and cultural dances, many of which were held at the newly refurbished Cairns Convention Centre.

Exhibitions and events were held at other locations including the Tanks Arts Centre, Cairns Art Gallery, Cairns City Library, Bulmba-ja Theatre / Northsite Contemporary Arts, Cairns Performing Arts Centre and Court House Gallery.

The Boigu Island Dance Team performed on opening night, closing ceremony and daily.

In delivering her eighth and final CIAF, Artistic Director Janina Harding said she was particularly proud of her team and the incredible quality of artwork on show.

Ms Harding, along with CIAF’s Associate Curatorial Director, Teho Ropeyarn, were tasked with selecting this year’s works based on the artists’ personal response to Queensland’s First Peoples’ notion of and connection to, plants and trees.

Ms Harding said she was proud to share this stunning exhibition along with the 17 incredible installations comprising our new commissioning project, Big Sculpture Showcase.

Ms Fujii was shortlisted with four other artists who had already picked up awards – Ngallametta, Yeatman, Major and Creek.

CIAF Chair Tom Mosby said the 2022 program brought together artistic, social, and cultural experiences, while also creating vital economic opportunities for Queensland artists.

“What CIAF does so well, through its association with art centres and local and commercial galleries, is provide an accessible platform for people to embrace Queensland’s distinctive Indigenous arts movement and cultural practice that would otherwise remain unknown,” he said.

“CIAF is able to present the arts and cultures from some of the most isolated communities of Cape York and the Torres Strait in one vibrant setting over five remarkable days.”

It was the first time Lara Fujii – winner of the much coveted Peoples’ Choice award – had put any of her art into CIAF she says.

“I was encouraged to by Margaret Mara and Badu Arts Centre,” she said.

“I’ve been doing art work on and off for a long time, it was working with natural resources in community that really grabbed my attention and what I liked about working with the raw material.

“It was free, there was more meaning because I felt connected to the stories.

“Most of my work I try to base around my children, when we go out in the boat or to the beach “I have always been fascinated by the low tide where the coral come out and where you see everything on the reef this connects me to my children.”

She said she was very surprised to win.

“I didn’t think I would stand a chance of winning, I thought people were joking about me winning,” she said.

“It was only when Margaret sent a copy of the framed certificate that I realised I had won.

“CIAF was a real eye opener, it’s a different feeling when you enter things in CIAF and you are acknowledged for your work you do, a really good feeling.

“I just want to thank my boys, biggest part of my inspiration because of their work as cray fishermen and being out on sea and country, they’re always supporting me with my art work.

“And thank you to Badu Arts for displaying my art work. and Cairns TAFE for bringing me to the CIAF. “Thank you to all those that voted for my work.”

Townsville’s healthiest stand up for NAIDOC

townsville: Award winners ready to cut the cake.

BY ALF WILSON PEOPLE who have contributed to positive health changes for First Nation’s people in one of the country’s most geographically dispersed hospital catchments have received awards during NAIDOC celebrations.

Townsville University Hospital (TUH), North Queensland’s only tertiary hospital, supports a referral

catchment of almost 700,000 people.

It’s territory extends west to Richmond and Hughenden, north to Cardwell, south to Home Hill and east to Magnetic and Palm Islands.

The awards were presented during a ceremony in the hospital gardens on 7 July.

Many patients from the Torres Strait Island, Northern Peninsula Area and Gulf of Carpentaria regions are

referred there for specialiSed treatment.

The AWARDS winners were: • Relationships: Women’s Imaging Outreach Service to Palm Island.

• Respect: Yamani Meta Midwifery Group Practice team.

• Opportunities: Indigenous Intern Pathways team.

• Staff Award: Phoebe Paul,

Renal Unit Assistant in Nursing.

• Staff Award: Morgan Appleby, TUH Speech Pathologist.

• Community Service Appreciation Award: Dwayne Maluga, Alabaster House.

Aboriginal dancers, didgeridoo player William Mabo (a grandson of Eddie Mabo), Komet Dancers and Alfred Smallwood did a smoking ceremony.

Health service executive director Wendy Ah Chin said this year’s NAIDOC theme Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! could be applied to the health setting each and every day.

“I firmly believed change begins at a grassroots level,’’ Ms Ah Chin said.

“Our NAIDOC Awards presents an excellent opportunity to celebrate those who are going above and beyond to lead change and make healthcare more equitable for all North Queenslanders.

“It’s about those health service staff who are getting up, standing up and showing up every day to improve the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.”

Long activist history shows up in Townsville story and pics BY ALF WILSON

Flagging a torres strait background: Torres Strait colours were everywhere at the march.

A RECORD number turned out last Friday for Townsville’s street march which was a highlight of NAIDOC celebrations in the town.

They gathered at the roundabout of Hinchinbrook Drive and Thuringowa Drive near Kirwan High and started walking at 10am.

In total the

march took about 30 minutes and was escorted by police.

They marched about 800m to Riverland Parkways where later that day a popular “Deadly Day Out” was held.

BY BEL LUI A cold winter morning did not discourage the biggest crowd to ever attend and participate in the Cairns NAIDOC march from Munro Martin Parkland to Fogarty Park.

They arrived to the blast of Yothu Yindi belting out their Treaty song, entirely in keeping with this year’s NAIDOC 2022 theme.

Speeches from different agencies were presented and after his deliberation, Mayor Bob Manning declared the celebrations should begin.

Lots on show for NAIDOC week activities on Waiben

Everyone was welcome to the Torres Health Open Day held last Friday, where a range of activities, mostly involving painting either faces or banners, was enjoyed by everyone who attended.

Elder Frank Cook and TSIMA CEO Diat Alferink presented to 250 people online in a live broadcast as part of special Anglicare SA NAIDOC event.

Joey Laifoo and the Island Stars Dance team hosted a series of Youth Arts Workshops at the Lagaw Titui Cultural Centre, Douglas St, over the week, with good participation in a range of activities.

Garbutt meets Collingwood on their grounds

BY ALF WILSON THE highlight of a trip to Melbourne by a team of young Australian Rules footballers was forming a guard of honour for the AFL game between Collingwood and North Melbounre at the MCG last Saturday.

The Garbutt Bombers under-17 side from Townsville left their North Queensland home town by plane on 3 July for Melbourne where they were a guest of the Collingwood team.

It was the trip of a lifetime, according to Garbutt Magpies official and former player Randal Ross who was the tour co-ordinator.

The Garbutt Bombers Townsville senior affiliated club is the Garbutt Magpies, hence the connection.

“There was 22 young players and six adult officials with them and we were just advised on Friday that we will form a guard of honour for the Collingwood

heroes: Mason Cox & Randal Ross. versus North Melbourne match at the MCG – they are excited,” Randall Ross said.

During the trip the side lost a game to Penola College by two points and visited the Collingwood and Essendon Club facilities.

One of the biggest influences on the players was Collingwood ruckman Mason Cox, who had previously visited Townsville.

Garbutt Bombers are running second on the Townsville under 17 competition ladder.

Ailan boys pass Broncos a win

BY ALF WILSON There was several ‘Torres Strait moments’ involving rising star Ezra Mam and experienced Brenko Lee during the Brisbane Broncos 32-18 win over St George Illawarra in NRL round 17 at Suncorp Stadium last Sunday afternoon.

Five eighth Mam and centre Lee are both proud of their Torres Strait descent and in the fourth and 49th minutes combined to set up Brisbane tries.

Both times, Mam passed to Lee who passed onto Delouise Hoeter who scored tries in a corner.

Then at the 55th minute Mam was involved in the play of the match when he grabbed a pass from Broncos fullback Tesi Niu to score himself under the post.

Brisbane chalked up their sixth straight win at home in the six tries to three victory.

The “baby” Broncos as they were known for the match, because of players missing for last night’s State of Origin, are fifth on the ladder and 15-1 to win the flag.

AFL plans a busy second half to year This term AFL Cape York will be running several sports programs within the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area regions local development office Kieran Sciberras says.

“Programs will be delivered in the form of in-school sports education sessions, which focus on teaching gross motor skills, AFL skills and fundamental movements in a fun and welcoming environment,” he said.

“Complementing these sessions will be our AFL Auskick program and those who sign up for our Auskick Program will get an AFL Auskick pack and their own AFL Football to keep, so they can continue to practice their skills.”

He said the TSI/NPA Crusader Cup would be played at the Ken Brown

Oval on Waiben in week 6.

“This event is the first step on the AFL talent pathway for students and is one of the regional events used to select our junior AFL Cape York Crusaders Representative Team,” he said.

“Year 5-6 students from all Tagai State College primary campuses, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School campuses and NPA State College campuses are invited to participate in this non-contact interschool AFL carnival.

“2022 will also see the return of the Chris Johnson and Angie Nadredre (also known as the CJAN) Cup on Yusia Oval in Bamaga.

“Senior high school students from AFL Cape York Boys and Girls Houses in Cairns travel up to Bamaga to play

AFL against students from NPA State College, Tagai State College and other invited schools.

Giving our kids an Olympic experience for NAIDOC The Australian Olympics Committee celebrated NAIDOC Week with a special visit to the Torres Strait supported by their partnership with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), Basketball Australia and Indigenous Basketball Australia, running a free community basketball day and Olympians sharing their stories to inspire young locals.

Thursday Island local and dual Olympic basketballer Danny Morseu was joined by fellow AOC Indigenous Advisory Committee (IAC) members and Olympians Patrick Johnson, Beki Smith, Kyle van der Kuyp, Olympic boxer and artist Brad Hore and AOC Athletes’ Commission member Rowie Webster, with AOC President Ian Chesterman and CEO Matt Carroll.

In an open community day, the four inaugural recipients of the Australian Olympic Indigenous Coaching Scholarship, supported by Toyota, and Olympians ran a basketball clinic for more than 50 young locals, with RAAF members also hitting the court before providing a barbecue for all attendees and their families.

Beki and Brad also delivered an “Olympics Unleashed” session, sharing their own Olympic journeys with the children to demonstrate the importance of goal setting and overcoming challenges to pursue whatever passion they may have.

As part of the day the RAAF took special guests on a flight over the Torres Strait.

Kaurareg traditional owners Aunty Enid Tom and Barbara Miskin, were able to view their lands from a new perspective. Also on board were Olympians Patrick, Danny and Kyle, and AOC’s Chesterman and Carroll taking in the unique view of the Torres Strait from the back of the Spartan.

RAAF Deputy Air Commander Australia, Air Commodore Ben Sleeman led a team of RAAF personnel, including Avionics Technician, Leading Aircraftwoman Raba Nona whose family hails from Badu Island, and Indigenous Liaison Officers, to transport Olympians and coaches and help deliver the basketball clinic.

Underdogs Alau push Roosters

story BY ALF WILSON, pICS GAVIN WALTERS Underdogs Alau Eagles stretched reigning premiers Roosters to the limit in Saturday’s main game on the Rock before losing 32-30 in a cliffhanger.

The round 10 main clash at Ken Brown Oval was action packed and undefeated Roosters were expected to win easily.

However a gallant Alau Eagles had other ideas and their much improved effort will have them confident of a good showing come semi finals time.

Both sides scored six tries with Roosters four pointers going to Aaron Guligo (two), Andre Wapau, Sig Wigness, Denzel Whap and Alwyn Bond.

Aaron Guligo kicked two goals.

For Alau Eagles Corey Toby (two), Sherwin Young (two), David Mooka and Michael Bond scored tries.

Mikalec Young booted two goals.

In the early game Badhu side Mulga Tigers 28 defeated Suburbs 16 which

was the second match in the series for the prestigious Tom “Yaza” Stephen Challenge.

In Saturday’s game for Mulga Tigers Hassim Adidi scored two tries with one each to Levon Bowie and Zengrey Lifu Nona .

Suburbs try scorerers were Thomas Bob, Jahdon Billy and Utung Savage.

In round 11 next Saturday at the rock, Roosters meet Suburbs in the early game and Pioneer Knights and Alau Eagles face off in the main match.

Mulga Tigers have the bye.

Statistics on the QRL official sheets have Alau Eagles star David Mooka the competition’s leading try scorer on five from Suburbs George Gabey and Roosters Jeffrey Neliman both on four.

Equal top competition point scorers are Brendan Magala (Roosters), Mikalec Young (Alau Eagles) and Jeffrey Neliman (roosters) each on 32.
