Budget concerns cause a splash The State Government’s $2.6 million commitment to a Splash Park on Waiben was a response to Torres Shire Council concerns about the safety of children and families in relation to the immediate threat posed by increased croc sightings local MP Cynthia Lui says. She said the issue was first raised three years ago by the Torres Shire Council. “For me, community safety is always going to be my priority,” she said. “Although it was discussed over previous years, no funds were committed until now.” She said it was not the only investment in the Torres Strait from this year’s Budget, and came from a different funding stream to housing and other issues for the region. “Splash Parks are a great way to encourage families to get outside, providing healthy recreation opportunities for kids and a place for parents to get together,” she said. She said delivering the park was more than a ‘nice thing’. “It deters our children and families away from the immediate dangers lurking our waters,” she said. “It creates an environment for social cohesion and supports community coming out to interact in a family friendly, social environment. “The nearest park is Cairns for Torres Strait families to enjoy this type of recreational space. “Families from all over Torres Strait is as deserving as children and families in Cairns.” Continued Page 2
