Historic fight for climate justice story and pic BY TALEI ELU Another group of Torres Strait Traditional Owners – led by Paul Kabai and Pabai Pabai, from Guda Maluyligal – are taking the Australian government to court for failing to prevent climate change. “Our people have lived on these islands for more than 65,000 years,” they said. “But if the government doesn’t change course, our homes could disappear beneath
the rising seas, making us Australia’s first climate change refugees. We have a responsibility to protect Country and our communities – and we hope that by bringing this case we will help all Australians affected by climate change.” Over the past few weeks information sessions have been held on Boigu, Saibai, Badhu, Waiben, Bamaga and Cairns to share information about the case, known as the Australian Climate Case, and rally community support.
