Torres Shire Mayor Vonda Malone has announced she will resign her position on Council as of next Thursday to take up a new job as the Chief Executive Officer of the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) Acting-Mayor Cr Gabriel Bani, who should have been made official at yesterday’s Council meeting, said he was initially shocked to hear of the Mayor’s decision. “I’m weighing it up at the moment,” he said last Sunday. “The official meeting is on Wednesday [yesterday], where we acknowledge the resignation of the mayor. “Then myself as Deputy Mayor will be
in acting capacity until such time as there is a by-election. “I have had a good talk with Vonda and we’ve been working together, so it should be a seamless transition.” Vonda said it had been an honour and privilege to serve as Mayor for the past six years. “As I reflect upon the good work and the milestones we have achieved, as well as the many challenges and opportunities we have faced together over the years, you will understand why I feel a sense of sadness in leaving the Torres Shire Council team at this time,” she said on Facebook.
