They Keep Making Noise!

In March every year International Women’s Day is celebrated world-wide and in Queensland the event is supported by the Queensland Government’s Women’s Week. This year’s theme is Keep Making Noise!

This amazing group of women from Badu Island have planned and ran a week-long program

of celebrations and learning the whole community was invited to participate in, starting on Monday with a (noisy!) march through the community.

We’ll have more pics and stories (send us yours!) in our next issue, but in the meantime check out our TSRA International Women’s Day feature on pages 14-15 

Tori’s art fronts #NRW2022 Illustrator Tori-Jay Mordey has brought 14 brave characters to life to show the different faces of Australians working for a just and equal society under this year’s National Reconciliation Week theme: Be Brave. Make Change. #NRW2022 Reconciliation Australia CEO Karen Mundine said the theme was a challenge to all Australians to ‘be brave’ and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can ‘make change’ for the benefit of everyone.

Tori-Jay said her characters were a visual reminder that reconciliation was everybody’s business.

“Working on this project was a huge honour for me as a Torres Strait artist, to be able to help push the narrative of National Reconciliation Week,” Tori-Jay said.

“I sought inspiration of what that kind of brave change might look like from many different people; people I know that are around me, people I see every day.

“And people I see living bravely every day in their own lives – from fierce little kids to older people working with more established mindsets and environments.

“It’s important to keep these discussions alive and to strive for a better future, to encourage genuine connection and push for equality and equity.

“We can make a change.

“But we can’t do it alone.

“Be brave and start the conversation today.”

The illustrations were commissioned by Reconciliation Australia in association with Carbon Creative, who advised on and managed the 2022 theme creation and development.

Ms Mundine said this year’s theme built on the 2021 theme, which encouraged us all to greater action on reconciliation.

“Last year Reconciliation Australia encouraged all Australians to take action; not just in National Reconciliation Week but every week of the year.

“We saw unprecedented response to our suggested actions for everyday and for braver action.

“This year we are asking everyone to make change beginning with brave actions in their daily lives – where they live, work, play and socialise.”

National Reconciliation Week runs from 27 May (Referendum Day) to 3 June (Mabo Day).

Events registration and poster requests will open in the coming weeks.

100 years of Kaurareg resilience remembered

BY KANTESHA TAKAI Kaurareg families united and marched through the main street of Waiben last weekend, in celebration and commemoration of their centurylong resilience.

Saturday 5 March marked 100 years since the forced removal of Kaurareg families from their home on Kiriri to Poid (Adam Village) on Moa Island in 1922.

Persecuted and hunted to near extinction, they were transported at gunpoint.

Removed from their own Country, they were also stripped of their land, culture and language, losing their identity and forcing them to rebuild as a people and culture.

Today, Kaurareg are a thriving nation of people with Native Title rights to their inner islands of Zenadth Kes, the Kaiwalagal region which includes the inhabited islands of Kiriri, Waiben, Ngarupai and Muralag.

The weekend’s march allowed for much healing, family embraces and knowledge sharing across generations.

Rather than relive painful memories, the Kaurareg Aboriginal people celebrated their survival by spending the day together as a family, and connecting through their culture.

Masks are (mostly) off but please stay COVID aware There are more than 250 active COVID-19 cases still within within the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service (TCHHS) region Chief Executive Beverley Hamerton says, with just over 100 of those within the Torres Strait and NPA region.

“Active case numbers are fluctuating as cases are discharged from their one-week quarantine and new cases come on,” she said.

She said there were no COVID-related hospitalisations in the region and the rules for wearing masks had changed.

“Masks are now no longer required in shops, workplaces, schools, and hospitality venues,” she said.

“However, they are still required in hospitals and primary healthcare centres, all other healthcare settings including vaccination clinics, GPs and dentists, disability care, prisons, aged care, airports and planes and while on public transport anywhere.

“We continue to urge Torres Strait, Cape York and Northern Peninsula Area residents to observe common sense hygiene practices such as maintaining social distance – think three big steps – and good hygiene, including frequent washing of hands with sanitiser, especially

when gathering in groups for social events “And very importantly, stay home if you are sick – don’t go to work and think carefully about attending social gatherings.

“We are continuing to see transmission of COVID–19 throughout our region, and remind our communities that vaccination remains our best protection against the virus.”

From Monday, 14 March, bookings for vaccinations can be made through your local hospital, primary healthcare centre or community pharmacy.

Walk-ins are always welcome at all Torres Strait, Cape York, and Northern Peninsula Area vaccination clinics.

What to do after having COVID-19  

End isolation after seven days or when your symptoms are gone If you still have symptoms after seven days, stay home until your symptoms are gone, or seek medical care if you are not sure.

In the seven days after ending isolation You can go to work or school or return to your normal activities.

You don’t need a negative test result to go back to work or study.

If you leave your house: • wear a face mask, including whenever you are indoors, or when you’re outdoors but can’t socially distance • wash your hands regularly.

Don’t visit: • an aged care facility • a disability care setting



• a correctional facility like a prison • a healthcare facility like a GP or a hospital (unless the hospital has approved your visit to support a patient) You can go to these places if you work there or you are getting care.

In the 4 weeks after ending isolation You are unlikely to get COVID-19 again in the 4 weeks after you recover.

During this time, if you get COVID-19 symptoms again, you do not need to get tested.

If someone else in your house gets COVID-19, you are not considered a close contact, and you do not need to get tested or go into quarantine.



Get your next vaccination and look after your health

Even if you’ve had COVID-19, you should get vaccinated.

After you have recovered, you can get vaccinated – regardless of whether it’s you first, second or booster dose.



More than 4 weeks after you recover

If – more than 4 weeks after your recover – you have COVID-19 symptoms again, get tested.

The Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service (TCHHS) has established a new nonclinical Midwifery Navigation Service to provide additional support for women travelling to Cairns from the region to give birth.

TCHHS Nurse Navigators Manager Rachel Sargeant said the service would work with women from the Torres Strait, Northern Peninsula Area and Cape York, and support them to navigate the system as easily and smoothly as possible.

“The new service is designed for women who must travel to Cairns to access specialist obstetric and maternity services not available at our local maternity services within the region,’’ she said.

“Our team of two Midwifery Consultants (Navigation) and two senior Indigenous Health Workers will additionally support women before, during and after their journey to Cairns to give birth.’’

Ms Sargeant said local birthing services allowed women who did not have a complex medical and obstetric history, and who did not experience a complex antenatal period, to be cared for locally if they chose.

“But women with higher risk pregnancies, or other specialised needs, will continue to travel to Cairns or another larger centre to give birth for their and their babies’ safety,’’ she said.

She said the Midwifery Navigation Service would help provide extra, wrap-around

support to manage these women’s journeys from start to finish.

“By the time the women arrive in Cairns to give birth, they will have a known and friendly face on the ground here to support them through their birthing journey,” she said.

“Our Midwifery Navigation Services team will provide liaison and enable communication pathways with the midwives in the women’s own communities, as well as the maternity team at Cairns Hospital and other non-government organisations such Apunipima Cape York Health Council, Mookai Rosie and other services.

“We are committed to culturally safe midwifery service provision.’’

Public Health Alert for SEQ: confirmed human case of Japanese Encephalitis Virus A public health alert has being issued following a confirmed human case of Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV) in regional southern Queensland.

The confirmed case is being treated in a Brisbane hospital.

JEV is a nationally notifiable disease in both humans and animals.

The virus cannot be spread directly from person to person.

It is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito to people and animals, mostly pigs and horses.

Most human infections of JEV cause no symptoms or mild symptoms such as headache or fever.

A person with severe disease may present with inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), characterised by sudden onset of vomiting, high fever and chills, severe headache, sensitivity

to light, neck stiffness and nausea/ vomiting.

Children aged under five years of age and older people who are infected with JEV are at a higher risk of developing more severe illness.

Measures to prevent mosquito bites include regularly applying insect repellent containing Diethyl Toluamide (DEET), Picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus; wearing loose, light-coloured clothing to cover up arms, legs and feet; and using other insecticide-based mosquito control devices where possible when outside.

Queensland Health is working collaboratively with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and industry, as well as state, territory and national counterparts to discuss a national response.

Climate change rated ‘urgent’ by IPCC Scientists from around the world have confirmed what the Torres Strait 8 say they already knew: climate change is happening and urgent government action is needed.

In the wake of the sixth report released by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Torres

Strait 8 claimant and Kulkalgal Traditional Owner Yessie Mosby said the government need to act - now.

“Scientists from around the world have confirmed what we already know – climate change is happening now,” he said.

“Here in the Torres Strait we see our island homes wash away, taking our loved ones’

remains with her due to sea level rise.

“We’ve always been able to read the seasons.

“We know when to expect the monsoon season and the dry season but now it’s hard to read the weather – everything is unpredictable now.

“We need urgent government action.”

Climate Council

Research Director Dr Simon Bradshaw said the science was clearer than ever.

“The impacts of climate change on islands such as Warraber, Poruma, Masig, Boigu and Saibai are truly heartbreaking, causing not only loss of land and homes, but threatening thousands of years of culture and the deep connection of

communities to their islands,” he said.

“Torres Strait Islanders have contributed almost nothing to the causes of climate change, yet are being hit first and hardest by its impacts.

“It is way past time for our decision makers to listen to those on the frontlines of the climate crisis.

“Only then do we

truly understand what is at stake, and also recognise the strength and resilience of Torres Strait Islanders in responding to this crisis.

“The science is clearer than ever: the very survival of many of the Torres Strait Islands depends on Australia and the world doing everything possible to immediately accelerate the transition beyond

fossil fuels, while at the same time providing far greater support to communities with adapting to changes that can no longer be avoided.”

A statement signed

by Torres Strait leaders and climate scientists has been released in response to the report, coordinated by the Our Islands Our Home campaign (see below).

Moana’s style is unique and uses bold bright colours, metallic paint and eye-catching designs.

Ama Wasie is a cultural weaver, specialising in natural fibre weaving and jewellery making.

Ama Wasie has received Commendations at the Gab Titui Indigenous Art Awards and has exhibited her works in the Gab Titui Cultural Centre Galleries.

Aunty Rose hails from Kubin Village on Mua Island. She is a proud Kaurareg woman and Kala Lagaw Ya speaker who who has been crocheting, beading and crafting since she was 5 years old. Aunty Rose delivers regular workshops at the Gab Titui.

Paula is from the clan group Serganilgal on Moa Island and Kaurareg of Muralag. Her works are based on her cultural heritage, stories in traditional knowledge, techniques and styles. Paula is a resident artist of Moa Arts.

Leading Torres Strait textile artist, designer and printer Rosie Ware creates stunning works in her home studio. Rosie Ware Designs is also a popular tourist attraction on Thursday Island, offering visitors the opportunity to experience her unique prints.

Established artist Fiona ElisalaMosby holds a Bachelor of Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art. She is known for her lino printing, etching, mono printing, weaving, and jewellerymaking. Fiona is a resident artist of Moa Arts.

Proud Saibailaig and avid cultural practitioner Goeynaw Isua is a natural entertainer. Her traditional kaikai demonstrations at the Gab Titui Cultural Centre are part instructional, part comic relief. Both elders and children enjoy her interactive workshops.

Raised on Erub, Nancy Kiwat is a three-time Gab Titui Indigenous Art Award Winner and a renowned artist. Her tribal clan is Saisarem and she draws from her cultural heritage, community and family for inspiration. Nancy is renowned for her 3D sculptures.

Matilda is a talented artist from the Tupmal clan and resident artist of Badu Arts. She is renowned for her intricate lino prints and has grown her craft to include etching, traditional dressmaking and new sandpainting techniques.

Margaret Gabey, affectionately known as Nayama has bloodlines from Mer to Mabuyag. Nayama is a talented ukulele player, singer and a cultural weaver who creates incredible pieces using natural fibres such as pandanus, coconut fronds and cane.

One of the last remaining practitioners of traditional Torres Strait basket-making, Ama Mahnah applies her methods creating pieces from ghost net and natural fibres. Her creations have been exhibited in galleries throughout the world.

Musical icon and performer; Aunty Cessa Nakata is also a cultural practitioner, artist and jewellery maker. She has hosted workshops at the Gab Titui Cultural Centre, where her participants have learnt her unique beading technique.

Record turnout for Clean Up Australia Day 2022 Pics SUPPLIED BY Torres shire council

Torres Shire Council (TSC) enjoyed a record turnout for this year’s Clean up Australia Day on Thursday, Horn and Prince of Wales (POW) Islands last Sunday.

Council said they were “absolutely pleased” with the day, as more than 180 local community members including children, families, local community organisations, businesses and government agencies, signed up for the annual event.

Enthusiastic community members started collecting rubbish from around the Shire at 6.30am, hours before the sign-on stations were operational from 8am onwards.

Stations hosted by Council were spread across multiple locations within the shire, including at the Horn Island foreshore, Thursday Island foreshore (turtles), Muralag Beach – Prince of Wales Island, Tamwoy Town IBIS and Rosehill Community Zar-Zar. Clean up Statistics for 2022 An extraordinary amount of rubbish was collected around Torres Shire this year, a total of 260 bags of rubbish, 17 bags of recycled waste and 12 truck loads were tallied!

• Thursday Island collected 120 bags, 15 recyclables and six truckloads of rubbish. The collection included bull bars, gas bottles, old tyres, turtle shell, gates, car batteries, chairs, food waste (cut up scraps) and domestic waste.

• There was a huge amount of local rubbish collected at the Horn Island station, which included 120 bags, two recyclables and four truckloads.

• Prince of Wales Island community was able to collect 20 bags of rubbish and two car loads.

Great community turnout Council would like to thank our community members for coming out and making this event a successful occasion.

A great mixture of family groups, social groups, and organisations were in attendance, infants and toddlers, to senior-aged residents stepped up.

Growth and change for Torres Shire is all in the planning

Torres Shire Council (TSC) has launched a new Planning Scheme, and a new Local Government Infrastructure Plan, both aimed at managing growth and change throughout Torres Shire for the next 10-15 years.

Prepared with assistance from the Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships (DATSIP), Mayor Vonda Malone said the new planning scheme should help ease housing issues.

“The new Scheme reflects the planning and development aspirations of the Council and the community,” she said. “[It addresses] key planning issues such as the demand and preferred location for industrial zoned land, and opportunities to encourage an increase in the supply and diversity of housing.”

Preparation for the launch of the new scheme began in 2017

THE PLAN: available now on the TSC website and included extensive engagement with State Government agencies, as well as two rounds of public consultation from November 2020 to February 2021 and April to June 2021.

Council also worked with DATSIP and various consultants to prepare a new Local Government Infrastructure Plan.

“The new plan has empowered our community to be involved in the planning process and has supported local decision making,” Cr Malone said.

Specifically, the new plans: • Incorporate an innovative structure different to anything used in a planning scheme in Queensland. The new structure is intended to promote a first principles approach to planning while supporting an increase in the potential for the community to actively participate.

• Have been drafted, structured and presented to specifically respond

to the unique local characteristics of Torres Shire, including streamlining the assessment of straightforward development applications, supporting a meritsbased assessment process for complex development applications and incorporating guidance material such as colour coding and symbology.

• Have explored new ways of integrating Indigenous cultural heritage into the planning process through the use of an overlay supported by mapping, assessment benchmarks and a detailed consultation process.

• Were subject to a rigorous and broad ranging community engagement program which saw various locations across the Shire being visited. In total 35 stakeholder and community meetings were held, over 200 people were consulted, and 33 formal submissions were received; and • Address a range of complex and emerging policy matters and State interests including natural hazards and sea turtle protection.

“The new Planning Scheme is a contemporary planning document to manage growth and change throughout Torres Shire for the next 10-15 years,” Cr Malone said.

“It replaces the 2007 Planning Scheme.”

TSRA is celebrating inspiring local women as part of Queensland Women’s Week from 5-13 March 2022, which includes International Women’s Day on Tuesday 8 March. This year’s international theme is #BreakTheBias and is supported by the United Nations’ call to action, Changing Climates: Equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.

Legacy of firsts for trailblazing Torres Strait ranger Edna Nai’s journey to become a Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) land and sea ranger has been shaped by a series of firsts – from her first time on a big plane, to joining the first cohort of female rangers in the region.

In the early 1990s, Mrs Nai left her community of Masig to pursue a university education.

The move to Cairns and then Adelaide was a culture and climate shock.

“South Australia was far from the Torres Strait – and cold,” Edna said.

“I couldn’t get used to the weather, I was weighed down with double clothes every day.”

She started an Advanced Certificate in Community Development, but like many women back then, family commitments signalled the end of her studies.

Her new family stayed in Adelaide so her husband could finish his university degree and after his graduation they decided it was time to move back to Masig.

Edna returned home with no degree or job, but a growing family and a heart filled with hope.

While on the Community Development Employment Projects (CDEP) scheme as a job seeker, she encountered rangers at the small local nursery.

She loved the outdoors and building on traditional ways of gardening and conservation passed on from her mother and aka (grandmother).

When the TSRA advertised for local rangers, her late husband Francis encouraged her to apply.

“We heard about the jobs and I thought to myself, ‘oh no I don’t see myself there, it’s for boys, it’s a male thing’,” she said.

“We applied together, but I didn’t expect to get the job as a female.

“Men were seen as the providers for finance and family.

“I was worried about what people would say and culturally too.

“My husband said, ‘why don’t you just give it a go’.

Thriving career: TSRA Ranger Edna Nai carries out revegetation works “We both ended up getting jobs as rangers.

“I was so happy to get the job but was thinking honestly, what would people say about a woman ranger?”

A decade later, Edna is one of TSRA’s longest-serving rangers and has many supporters.

Last month (27 February), she celebrated 10 years as a TSRA ranger dedicated to preserving and protecting land and sea.

“I look at how far I’ve come and I can’t believe it,” she said.

Her advice to girls and women is to be brave and

seize opportunities.

“I would say, take the challenge and just go for it if there’s an opportunity to do something for your community,” she said.

“Community members come up to us and say how great it is to see female rangers.”

She was among the region’s first female rangers and her legacy means she won’t be the last.

“At first there were only three female rangers in the region, two of us on Masig and one on Warraber,” she said.

“There’s lots more now.”

Breaking bias: balancing the boardroom and motherhood in Bamaga First-time Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) board member, Tailisa Yusia, is paving the way for more young women and mothers to have a say in their communities.

At 34 years old, she is one of the youngest TSRA Board members.

As Portfolio Member for Economic Development and Member for Bamaga, she has embraced opportunities to learn and advocate for women, her community and the people of Zenadth Kes. “It’s a privilege to work alongside experienced community leaders, I’m trying to gain as much knowledge as I can,” Tailisa said.

“My community motivates me, because I would like to enhance things that are working and look for resources for areas that can work better and smarter.”

She credits her father, mother and traditional adopted mother as her inspiration.

“My father Jonathan has strong work ethics,” she said.

“He’s a protector, provider and a leader who inspires me to always put my head down and work for what I want.

“My mother Patricia is my strength in voice and a very hard worker, who enables me to speak up and advocate for what’s right.

“My adopted mother taught me you are never too old to get qualifications.

“She was 65 when she obtained her qualifications in nursing.”

Tailisa said it was important to do away with self-doubt.

“Never give up or

“Women are amazing and when we want something, we will make it happen.

“Always remember if there is not a path, we as women, will find a way to make a path.”

Tailisa has challenged gender and cultural expectations to prioritise a university education and start her family later.

After more than a decade of study, she holds a Master of Social Work, Bachelor of Business / Community Services, a Certificate IV in Governance and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

“I studied for many years, but also prayed to be a mother,” she said.

“I have my blessing, so now I want to spend time with my daughter and also balance fulltime work and Board commitments.”

She said she wanted to encourage more women to take up leadership opportunities.

“I would like to see more women on boards and in leadership roles,” she said.

“COVID-19 has taught us to be more flexible to do work at home.

“Technology has made it really easy – it’s not the traditional style of working.

“This generation can be working from home or anywhere.

“It’s good to have women’s perspectives on boards and views from people of all ages.

“This International Women’s Day, let’s encourage women to participate and when it’s COVID-safe, go out in the community more and yarn with aspiring leaders.”

In 2021 Tailisa supported the delivery of the Torres Strait Maritime Pathways Project – a certified coxswain course in Bamaga – to 20 participants, including three women.

Her priorities include to increase economic development and infrastructure, improve social and emotional wellbeing services and quality of education for future generations.

Connecting culture to science Marine Biologist Madeina David, 23, is living the dream on her island home of Iama (Yam), using her degree to connect modern science with traditional land and sea management.

Madeina said it was a field she always wanted to work in.

“Even before starting primary school, I knew I wanted to be a marine biologist,” Madeina said.

“My dad is a cray fisherman and growing up I was always out on the reef with him, I love it.

“I want to ensure future generations can experience the sea and all that it provides.”

Her journey hasn’t been easy.

She left her family at the age of 11 to attend boarding school on Waiben.

“It was a challenge,” she said.

“There’s a gap in education between primary school and high school, there were a lot of things we didn’t learn to get us ready for high school.

“I felt like I was behind, but it didn’t take me long to catch up.

“We had one teacher who’d go out of his way to help us students who were struggling, he tutored on weekends and stayed after school.”

Madeina then made the even bigger move to study at James Cook University in Townsville.

“I had a rough time at uni, so I needed to commit and be definite about what I wanted to do,” she said.

“In the first two years, I was scared to ask for help even though many others were struggling too.

“That’s what got me through uni, I chose something I really wanted to do – so quitting wasn’t an option.

“If you focus on something you like doing, you won’t give up.”

A cadetship with the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) led to various job offers – but an opportunity to join the organisation’s Land and Sea Management Unit – Sea team stood out to her.

“After being away for so long, I love being able to work in my community and for my people,” she said.

“My parents are very proud and happy to have me home.

“It doesn’t feel like a job or work, I’m doing things that I love.”

Now she has learned to find her voice to help inform local decision-making and support those around her.

“Scientists visit and if my workmates don’t feel comfortable, I ask the questions and then break it down into Creole to help everyone understand,” she said.

“I think with my degree and experience, I get a lot of support from the rangers and Traditional Owners I talk to.”

She’s also encouraging more young people to chase their dreams.

“When I talk with my younger cousins about their futures, I tell them to find what they’re passionate about,” she said.

“When I was in high school, my teacher asked the class to consider where we see ourselves in five years.

“I can’t imagine myself doing anything other than this.

“I love everything marine, fisheries and conservation – I just want to do everything.”

In 2021, TSRA had a total of 151 employees.

Women make up more than half (58 per cent) of the TSRA workforce and the majority of the workforce (78 per cent) are Torres Strait Islander and/or Aboriginal.

Through the TSRA’s women’s

leadership program, 48 women have completed skills and capacity training since 2014.

Animal support group celebrates first birthday

It’s been year of “unexpected” successes for the Thursday Island Animal Support Group (TIASG), who have rescued and rehomed nearly 500 animals over the past 12 months, and celebrated last Friday with a bunch of our four-legged friends who enjoyed doggie treats (no candles) and a hat!

The small, entirely volunteer run, not-for-profit group has made a big impact in the community for their work in rehoming animals through to offering more regular vet services and leading the way in recycling initiatives.

President Sonia Einersen said she never expected the

group to be so successful in their first year.

“A few like-minded and passionate individuals got together and thought we might be able to help a dozen or so animals a year,” she said.

“It’s amazing that we have rescued 246 animals and found 219 homes. We also facilitated six vet visits to Thursday Island to improve access for the inner island communities to vet services.”

Completely self-funded, TIASG relied on donations, fund raising, grants and the Containers for Change program to fund its operations.

“Community support has really helped us to be able to

offer more services and help animals find new homes, and of course our fabulous volunteers are crucial to the work we do too,” Sonia said.

“We have a wonderful foster carer network on TI, and in Cairns, and others who walk the dogs at the shelter, provide administrative support and organise our fundraisers.

“Without them, we couldn’t so what we do.”

She said they hoped the next 12 months would be just as successful, but in a different way.

“Even though it is great we have been able to rehome so many animals, we really want to focus on the importance of domestic animals being desexed

so there are not so many unwanted animals for us to rehome,” she said.

“We also want to promote animal health with ticks, worms and heartworm being big issues amongst dogs.

“Unfortunately most of the dogs we receive have some form of worms.

“Heartworm is a serious disease which is spread by mosquitos and can be prevented with a yearly vaccination.”

The next desexing clinic on TI will be held from 1 – 5 April 2022.

Time running short to enter this year’s Telstra art awards Entries for the 2022 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA), highlighting the latest in contemporary Indigenous artistic practice, close at midnight (ACST) on Friday 18 March.

NATSIAA provides an international platform to showcase and tell your story to local and global audiences.

2021 Telstra NATSIAA Finalist and emerging artist from Queensland Elisa Jane Carmichael said there was nothing to lose.

Finalists are announced in an active media campaign, published in a stunning exhibition catalogue and put on show in a world-class exhibition which receives over 85,000 visitors plus online attention.

Hagiga Mosby, 21, has played her first game for NRLW in Brisbane for the Broncos last weekend.

Hagiga, or Haj, started playing touch football at the age of 13, in local comps and carnivals at Waiben, Cairns, and Townsville.

She said she had great support to help her thorough her football journey, from her family through to the following “amazing” people: Michael Zitha, Col Beckitt, Reg Taylor, Lachlan Parkison and, especially, her parents Fauziah and the late Danny Mosby.

Haj has travelled widely for her sport, including to New Zealand to play in the World Schools competition for the Australian team – and they won their game.

Between 2018-2022 she also travelled with the Australian Women’s Rugby 7’s Development Team to Fiji and Samoa.

“I feel so proud to represent my people and community,” she said.

“Not many people get to represent their people internationally.

“When people ask me

living the dream: lining up for the Brisbane Broncos. where I’m from I say, ‘I’m from Masig Island and Badu Island in the Torres Strait and I grew up on Thursday Island’.

“Travelling to different countries is always exciting and amazing.

“I get to experience see different cultures and make so many friends.”

She also took an opportunity to be a part of the First Nation Rugby 7’s Women’s team in Darwin, helping to captain the team.

But she suffered an injury to her ACL at the end of 2020.

“I was devastated when I

got injured because I knew it was a long process to get back on my feet,” she said.

“It’s easy to give up and it’s harder to start from scratch but I’m so blessed to have a lot of support from my family, that’s one thing that drove me and one thing that sat in my mind is that no matter what, you will have speed bumps in life.”

She had surgery and just five and a half months later was back on the field.

Sadly she lost her father two days after her 21st birthday in 2021.

“Honestly I questioned myself if I would play football ever again because it was a special thing me and my dad had a connection with,” she said.

But with guidance and support from her mum and family, she said she couldn’t throw it all away, and knew her dad would have wanted her to follow her dream.

Then it was all happening, starting with a suprise phone call in November last year from Women’s NRLW Broncos coach Kelvin Wright.

He asked if she would like to be a part of the team as a development player.

Without holding back she said, “yes please!”

Training started in January this year and by all reports Haj is enjoying not only being a part of a group of women working towards the same goal but every bit of making new friends with her team.

“It’s an honour and privilege to be a part of the Broncos women’s side,” she said.

“After my footy career, I would love to go back to TI as a secondary school PE

teacher and make a difference in our younger generations.”

She said she hoped her path has inspired more young people to take up professional sports as a career and as a pathway to see more of the world.

“Hopefully I can give younger generations the same opportunities I had because I see a lot of talented kids in the Torres Strait who can make it to the big stage,” she said.

“Sports can take you to many places, and it can help you with your future.”

She said when she was growing up she wanted to teach, but life had another plan for her: to inspire youth.

“Being an Indigenous female, I would tell youths that they can be whatever you want to be – all you have to do is believe in yourself and do the hard yards. If I can do it, you can do it too, no dream is too big” she said.

Haj said she was inspired by both her parents to be a person people could look up to.

Her advice to anyone with big dreams was to pursue them.

“No dream is too big if you want it go and get it,” she said.

“No matter how old you are or what your gender is, you can do it if you set your mind to it.”

NBL Indigenous round a point of pride

Cairns Taipans will be proudly wearing their Indigenous jerseys this weekend as part of the National Basketball League’s Indigenous Round, which tippedoff last Friday night.

Staged across Rounds 14-15, the NBL and clubs celebrated, recognised and acknowledged Indigenous culture across Australia and New Zealand.

All teams wore jerseys designed by Indigenous artists, an

Indigenous-designed basketball was used, and there were more league and club initiatives over the two rounds, including playing on courts which had Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander flags painted at the free throw lines.

Kris may be a chance for Origin selection

BY ALF WILSON TALENTED outside back Sebastian Kris looks set to cement a regular spot for the Canberra Raiders in the new National Rugby League (NRL) season starting this week.

Proud of his Torres Strait descent, Kris has lined up for Mabuyag side Wagadagam Storm at several Zenadth Kes carnivals on Waiben.

Kris, 22, is a line breaking centre who is strong in defence and looks certain to line up for the Raiders in their round one NRL clash with the Cronulla Sharks tomorrow night at Canberra’s GIO Stadium.

In a much anticipated round

two match at Townsville’s Queensland Country Bank Stadium next Saturday night, the Raiders clash with the NQ Cowboys.

The hard-running Kris had a great 2021 season for the Raiders, playing 20 games and scoring eight tries.

He made his first grade debut in Round 10 of the 2019 NRL season for Canberra against South Sydney, and missed the following year due to personal reasons.

Kris, who will celebrate his 23rd birthday on 19 April, has signed with the Raiders until the end of 2024 – proving how much confidence the club has in his ability.

Kris was born in Brisbane and played his first junior rugby league for the Centenary Panthers before moving to Canberra at age eight.

He played junior rugby league there for the Tuggeranong Valley Dragons.

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart is a big fan of Kris who, he said, with natural improvement could even be in the mix for State of Origin selection.

Haj crosses the line for Broncos and her family Hagigia ‘Haj’ Mosby has scored a try in her first NRLW game last weekend.

The field was WIN Stadium in Wollongong against the Newcastle Knights, and it was the Broncos’ second win of the season at 28-10.

Haj said it was an emotional game for her.

“A very emotional one

for me as I played my first rugby league game and my first footy game without my Dad,” she said on her Facebook page.

“But I know my Dad, Nen, Maia boy and Athe were watching from above.

“As I was sitting on the bus going to the stadium, I’m so used to receiving a long paragraph from my Dad, but I’m so blessed that I had all my uncles, aunties and cousins message me.

“I love all my family for their on going love and

support, especially my Mum and family there back Torres Strait.”

She said she had travelled from the Ken Brown oval on “the Rock” to “the big stage now”.

She has not only made her team proud but her family and friends as well.
