Entsch to visit outer islands Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch will be in the Torres Straits next weekend, to attend sorry business and meet with local residents and community organisations over the following days.

“It’s been difficult to be able to get to the Torres Strait, I much prefer to catch up with people when they’re in their communities,” he said.

“On the islands, rather than catching up with them in Cairns, which I will do, but I prefer to be in their home communities, it gives me a better idea of what’s happening.”

He said he was fully vaccinated.

“I’m tripled vaccinated but it’s been very, very difficult to get up there,” he said.

He said he had a busy schedule but

was keen to see as many people as he could.

“I’ve got invitations here to catch up with the new CEO for the Torres Strait Island Regional Council and I’ll be catching up with the acting CEO of the Torres Strait Regional Authority,” he said.

“And anybody else that wants to catch up with me will have the opportunity of doing so.”

He said TI staffer, Tania, had moved to Cairns and Tamara would be interviewing while they were there for the position to be filled locally.

“I’m very keen to keep my office open,” he said.

Aaron joins Screen Queensland board The Queensland Government has appointed four new directors to the Screen Queensland Board, including Aaron Fa’Aoso.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the new board was primed to steer the Queensland screen industry through growth, change and challenges ahead.

“The Queensland screen industry will vastly benefit from a board made up of impressive individuals, who between them, share a diverse range of skills, backgrounds and perspectives,” the Premier said.

“Together they

will inform Screen Queensland’s strategic direction, policies and funding decisions as it continues to forge a successful and profitable path.”

A proud Torres Strait Islander producer, screenwriter, actor and director based in Cairns, Aaron Fa’Aoso is Managing Director of Lonestar Productions (Strait to the Plate, Blue Water Empire).

The board appointments took effect on 24 January 2022, with new board members to serve a three-year term.

Beware stingers Any contact with a suspected tropical jellyfish – such as Box jellyfish or Irukandji, should be treated with the utmost severity.

• Get the patient somewhere cool, out of the water, and call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

• Seek assistance from a lifesaver or lifeguard.

• Douse/spray the affected area with vinegar for 30 seconds to neutralise invisible stinging cells, then pick off remaining tentacles.

• If vinegar is unavailable, carefully pick off the tentacles and rinse well in seawater.

• Apply a cold pack or ice in a dry plastic bag for pain relief – DO NOT apply freshwater directly onto the sting because it may cause undischarged stinging cells to discharge.

Keeping priorities moving: TSRA held first Board meeting of year online to stay connected and COVID-safe.

Information Technology (IT) has found its way to communities from Bamaga and Seisia, and out to all the outer islands for the Torres Strait Regional Authority’s (TSRA’s) first board meeting of the year – playing its part to limit the spread of COVID. TSRA Chairperson Napau Pedro Stephen AM said the technology was helping keep local priorities moving.

“We agreed to suspend travel in line with health advice to reduce the risk for communities and virus transmission,” he said.

“Instead of meeting in person, we have equipped our board members to keep connected online.

“Technology and internet access means we are still working together, just differently, to achieve outcomes for our people and region.

“Unlike in major cities and towns where people are used to working from home, we are just starting to learn how to live with COVID-19 and widespread community transmission.

“Some priorities and ways we do business will change due to COVID-19 impacts, but our shared commitment to keep communities safe and healthy remains strong.”

Mr Stephen said despite the expansion of mobile broadband and availability of NBN satellite internet services, the digital divide remained a concern.

“The National Closing the Gap agreement includes a target for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to have equal levels of digital inclusion by 2026,” he said.

for Healthy Communities and Board Member for Seisia Karyn Sam said internet access and technology literacy were among top priorities for her community.

“The more we can use online programs, the more confident we become to make it part of our everyday business,” Mrs Sam said.

“Using technology is a big learning curve in communities where stable internet is still an ongoing issue.

“Many of us are still learning and sharing what we know, we hope all our children will have the skills to thrive in a digital world,” she said.

Key forward priorities identified in the meeting included regional and marine infrastructure, fisheries and health.

Perina said the community was rallying around the event, with groups planning to rid the island of rubbish in key locations which included Bayo Beach, Rosehill Boat Ramp, Sadies and Green Hill.

WBNM Head of Campus Rick Cass said he would be headed for Bayo Beach and encouraged all students and families to get along to one of the sites to contribute to doing their bit.

“WBNM is committed to playing our role in

helping with this important community event,” he said.

“And one of those roles is about educating our young ones about responsible waste management and waste reduction by encouraging them to use the many Council bins provided around the island.

“We want to make sure every student understands the role they can play in making a permanent change for the better.”

Climate change report to be unpacked online by 350.org An online workshop hosted by 350.org Australia has been set to analyse the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC’s) Sixth Assessment report: Working Group 2 - Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability, which was released last Monday.

One of three IPCC working group reports, they said this one was likely to contain the most specific and alarming information about the real-world effects climate change may have on communities and ecosystems around the world.

The group said frontline communities were already experiencing terrible loss as a

result of climate change.

“For years, rising sea levels have already been impacting communities in the Torres Strait,” they said.

The second working group report was scientists’ best effort at helping us understand what reducing emissions and preparing for any impacts looks like, 350.org said.

Torres Strait 8 claimant and Warraberalgal Traditional Owner Kabay Tamu, will speak to the workshop, to be held at 5pm on Wednesday 9 March.

“When erosion caused by climate change happens and the lands get taken away by the sea, it’s like a

The workshop will run for approximately two hours, and include: • An update and story sharing from Kabay Tamu, Torres Strait 8 claimant and Warraberalgal Traditional Owner about the impacts climate change is already having on First Nations communities in Zenadth Kes (Torres Strait Islands) • An overview of the IPCC WG 2 Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability report and its implications, provided by Dr Lesley Hughes of the Climate Council • Safe spaces for us to collectively discuss our emotional responses to the report

Partnership ensures success story for green turtles

 From P1 A partnership between the Meriam Nation (Ugar, Mer, Erub) and Wuthathi Traditional Owners, the Queensland Government, Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, BHP and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation has helped save hundreds, possibly thousands, of green turtles.

Erubam Le Registered Native Title Body Corporate (RNTBC) chair Jimmy Gela, said the Raine Island Recovery Project was about ensuring turtle hatchlings successfully made it to the ocean.

“This project is an example of how all stakeholders, including Wuthathi and Meriam Nation Traditional Owners, government and private industry work together in collaboration to achieve one goal,” Mr Gela said.

Minister for Environment and Science Meaghan Scanlon said the Island was potentially the most important green turtle rookery on the planet.

“Raine Island is about 620km north of Cairns and it’s estimated that during a big season up to 100,000 green turtles nest annually on the island,” Ms Scanlon said.

“The Raine Island

Recovery Project began in 2015 to restore and protect the island and help prevent turtle deaths after they had laid their eggs.

“Around 40,000 cubic metres of sand was moved by heavy machinery to reprofile 35,000 square metres of nesting beach and raise it above tidal inundation levels.

“The beach reprofiling works have doubled the amount of viable nesting habitat, saving hundreds of thousands of turtle eggs from being drowned by tidal inundation each nesting season.

“Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service rangers, together with the Traditional Owners have worked tirelessly to prevent nesting turtle deaths from cliff falls by installing 1750m of custom-made turtle proof fencing.”

Wuthathi Aboriginal Corporation chair Keron Murray said Raine Island – or Thukuruu – was an important place, ecologically and culturally.

“We have ensured this huge logistical undertaking was not taken lightly or impacted the island’s integrity or our culture by having Wuthathi and Meriam Nation Cultural Heritage Advisors onsite to supervise the large-

Great Barrier Reef Foundation Managing Director Anna Marsden said they were proud of the work they had done.

“We’ve achieved a remarkable turnaround in the green turtle population,” she said.

“Because of the project, an additional 640,000 endangered green turtles have already begun life on the Great Barrier Reef, with an additional 4.6 million hatchlings expected to

start life on the reef over the next 10 years.

“Saving the reef and all its marine life, including turtles, is a huge task but the success of the Raine Island Recovery Project shows that by bringing together science, business, government, reef managers and Traditional Owners, we can make an impact.”

BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) Asset President Mauro Neves said BHP was also proud to have supported the Raine Island Recovery Project.

“To save so many turtles and have millions more expected to start life on the Great Barrier Reef is a great success,” he said.

“The project highlighted the critical role of innovative solutions and business working with the government and the local community to improve biodiversity on the reef.

“Importantly the project has also paved the way for stronger relationships with the Wuthathi and Meriam Nation Traditional Owners.”

Minister Scanlon said the partnership had been a stunning success.

“A dedicated turtle rescue crew has ensured turtles ashore at sunrise are returned to the ocean before they die from heat exhaustion on the island, saving the lives of 696 nesting females,” she said.

“The Queensland Government is grateful for the support from all our partners in this fantastic project over the past six years.”

GBRMPA’s A/Director Field Management Strategy Mark Read said the work at Raine Island was a well-documented example of successful reef intervention.

“These magnificent animals have been around since the dinosaur age but are facing a number of challenges – whether it be hotter sand resulting in more female offspring, or hatchlings not making their way to the ocean,” Dr Read said.

“Raine Island is an excellent example of how human intervention can support critically-important habitats and species and result in positive outcomes that filter through the ecosystem.”

Look after your best mates Dog owners are being urged to maintain an effective tick control program to prevent their four-legged friends falling victim to ehrlichiosis, a tick-borne disease caused by the bacteria Ehrlichia canis (E canis).

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said with the wet season now well

underway, man’s best friends needed their owners to do all they could to protect them from ehrlichiosis.

“We do not want dog owners to go through the trauma of seeing their beloved dogs suffering the effects of this horrible disease,” Mr Furner said “In late January, 2022, a dog that was reported as not having travelled outside of Queensland

“As ticks are more prevalent during the wet season, I cannot stress enough that, to prevent canine ehrlichiosis, dogs should be on a tick prevention program that repels and kills ticks preventing them from attaching to the dog.

“Dog owners should also watch for any signs of illness, avoid taking dogs into tick-infested areas such as the bush where possible, and regularly inspect dogs for ticks and carefully remove ticks.

“Whether your dogs are working dogs or family pets, the only tick they should get is the one that shows you have taken them to your local vet to get good advice and appropriate products to protect them.”

Mr Furner said dogs can become infected with E. canis after being bitten by an infected brown dog tick, which is common in most areas of northern Australia.

“Although they can vary considerably among dogs, clinical signs

typically include fever, lethargy, enlarged lymph nodes, loss of appetite, discharge from the eyes and nose, weight loss, and anaemia and bleeding disorders,” he said.

“Everyone involved with dogs has a general biosecurity obligation (GBO) under the Biosecurity Act 2014 to take all reasonable steps to ensure they do not spread a pest, disease or contaminant, including E canis.

“Australia’s first cases of E canis were detected in May, 2020, in dogs in Western Australia and since then the Northern Territory, and anyone taking dogs through areas where E canis is known, or likely, to be active should take additional precautions.

“Ehrlichiosis is a nationally notifiable disease and anyone who suspects a dog is showing signs of the disease must report it immediately to the Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888.”

200+ COVID cases here Mer is the latest of our outer islands to record COVID-19 in their communities, as numbers across the Torres Straits continue to fluctuate.

At the time of printing there were just under 500 active cases across the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service (TCHHS) region, including Cape York, with just over 200 of those in the Torres Straits.

TCHHS Chief Executive Beverley Hamerton said active case numbers fluctuated as cases were discharged from their one-week quarantine and new cases came on.

“There is currently one COVID-related hospitalisation at Bamaga,” she said.

“All other active cases within the region are being managed at

home or other accommodation arranged in association with local disaster management groups, where home accommodation is unsuitable for isolation.

“No further information can be provided due to confidentiality.”

She said about 82 per cent of the eligible population aged 12 years and over in the TCHHS region was fully vaccinated with two doses of vaccine.

An attitude adjustment It’s crucial to maintain the right attitude when the going gets rough and tough.

No matter what happens in your life, determine to go though it with the right attitude.

In fact, determine beforehand to keep a positive mindset in the midst of every negative situation that arises, including our current struggles with COVID. If you make this a conscious decision and mediate on it during the good times, you’ll already be prepared when difficulties arise.

Always think positive about yourself and everything you do.

The biggest mistake we can make is to think, ‘I could never be like that’.

If you start thinking like that, shut down that thought straight away.

If you feed it too much it will break out and destroy everything you have in your life – you, your children, your family, your home, your job, your friends, your relationship, your community.

It’s that serious.

Stop feeding it and sooner or later it will die.

You need to start with a change of attitude in yourself by putting yourself on the road to thinking better about yourself.

The reality is everything changes when you decide it will.

It really is that simple.

It is hard to keep yourself on the positive side, but hey, it’s your own relationship with your self.

It is hard to focus when normal life is in crisis and it’s near impossible to stay focused.

Maintaining a right attitude is much easier than regaining a right attitude.

As soon as you sense yourself becoming negative, make an immediate adjustment.

The thing is, no matter what obstacle are put in front of you, no matter how frustrated you get when things don’t go

how you want, never give in to negative talk.

You must keep yourself on the positive side always.

This could be a masterclass in your upgrade strategy.

Whenever you feel down and you start thinking, ‘why me’ or I’m not good enough’, stop right there and shut that thought down!

Remember: think positive and quickly change the message!

Oh, and pat yourself on the back when you do a great job.

Your mind will feed on the positive thoughts and will make you feel happy because a transformation is taking

place within you.

People will see the results.

You can also discipline yourself to stand strong with a positive attitude in every circumstance.

It’s one of the gifts we have as human beings.

We all go through seasons of adversity, and they will end.

When they do, you’ll have learned from them and things will be better.

Tough times don’t last forever, but I know tough people do!

Even when you are angry, don’t make decisions, our thoughts and feelings often run wild in the midst of crisis, this is when you need to be very careful about making decisions.

Remain calm, just breath!

Discipline yourself to stay focus on what you can do.

We’ve had terrible weather, lately, heaps of rain and floods.

I know it will pass, it’s just not a good time to go on, say, a holiday.

As we sit and wait, our thoughts can be just like that – wild and frantic – making it not the best time to make crucial decisions.

What should you do?

Stay calm and adopt the right – positive – attitude and things will fall into place.

Hopefully you are staying safe during this time and can reach out to someone if you need to.

Known for her acrylic work on canvas, Moana is an innovative Torres Strait artist that expresses her culture and stories through visual contemporary pieces.

Moana’s style is unique and uses bold bright colours, metallic paint and eye-catching designs.

Ama Wasie is a cultural weaver, specialising in natural fibre weaving and jewellery making.

Ama Wasie has received Commendations at the Gab Titui Indigenous Art Awards and has exhibited her works in the Gab Titui Cultural Centre Galleries.

Aunty Rose hails from Kubin Village on Mua Island. She is a proud Kaurareg woman and Kala Lagaw Ya speaker who who has been crocheting, beading and crafting since she was 5 years old. Aunty Rose delivers regular workshops at the Gab Titui.

Paula is from the clan group Serganilgal on Moa Island and Kaurareg of Muralag. Her works are based on her cultural heritage, stories in traditional knowledge, techniques and styles. Paula is a resident artist of Moa Arts.

Leading Torres Strait textile artist, designer and printer Rosie Ware creates stunning works in her home studio. Rosie Ware Designs is also a popular tourist attraction on Thursday Island, offering visitors the opportunity to experience her unique prints.

Established artist Fiona ElisalaMosby holds a Bachelor of Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art. She is known for her lino printing, etching, mono printing, weaving, and jewellerymaking. Fiona is a resident artist of Moa Arts.

Proud Saibailaig and avid cultural practitioner Goeynaw Isua is a natural entertainer. Her traditional kaikai demonstrations at the Gab Titui Cultural Centre are part instructional, part comic relief. Both elders and children enjoy her interactive workshops.

Raised on Erub, Nancy Kiwat is a three-time Gab Titui Indigenous Art Award Winner and a renowned artist. Her tribal clan is Saisarem and she draws from her cultural heritage, community and family for inspiration. Nancy is renowned for her 3D sculptures.

Matilda is a talented artist from the Tupmal clan and resident artist of Badu Arts. She is renowned for her intricate lino prints and has grown her craft to include etching, traditional dressmaking and new sandpainting techniques.

Margaret Gabey, affectionately known as Nayama has bloodlines from Mer to Mabuyag. Nayama is a talented ukulele player, singer and a cultural weaver who creates incredible pieces using natural fibres such as pandanus, coconut fronds and cane.

One of the last remaining practitioners of traditional Torres Strait basket-making, Ama Mahnah applies her methods creating pieces from ghost net and natural fibres. Her creations have been exhibited in galleries throughout the world.

Musical icon and performer; Aunty Cessa Nakata is also a cultural practitioner, artist and jewellery maker. She has hosted workshops at the Gab Titui Cultural Centre, where her participants have learnt her unique beading technique.

The cultural learning journey for NAISDA’s 2022 cohort of students began this week under the guiding direction of Cultural Tutors Dujon Niue, Jeanette Fabila and Edward Savage.

The tutors travelled to the College’s Darkinjung campus at Kariong, just north of Sydney, to teach songs and dance connected to Moa Island.

After their week-long Cultural Residency Program NAISDA students are about to start learning and rehearsing in preparation for their final celebrations of performances at Sydney Opera House in December.

This year’s production is called ATI which means ‘journey’ in the Meriam Mir Language.

It is Cultural Tutor, Elder and former NAISDA student Dujon Niue’s seventh year of passing on cultural knowledge to our next generation of developing artists through his own compositions.

This year his grandson Edward Savage, 24, joins him.

Edward has been learning and performing cultural dance since the age of two, and has his own dance school in Townsville.

“We are here keeping

Cultural learning: Men’s Marap Dance. that fire burning for our Ancestors – teaching and learning our diverse cultures,” Edward said.

“I am beyond blessed and grateful to have been given the opportunity to share the love, passion and energy I have for my culture with our present and future generations.”

Later this year students will travel to Moa for a week to connect with the Country their songs, dance and stories come from.

NAISDA Head of Cultural Practice Jo Clancy, facilitates the learning program, along with Cultural Trainers Berthalia Selina Reuben and Casey Natty.

She said NAISDA students learn directly from community, Elders and knowledge holders, which was important.

“Our Cultural Residency program and our relationships with our Cultural Tutors and communities are core to everything we are and everything we do at NAISDA,” Jo said.

“We are guided by the knowledge, the wisdom and the teachings they share.”

She said they were looking forward to sharing the richness of culture and stories with audiences.

NAISDA Head of Dance Deon Hastie will direct ATI, bringing to life it’s cultural and contemporary Indigenous dance, vibrant projections and an emotionally charged soundscape of song and live voices.

Last Friday NAISDA students celebrated the end of Cultural Residency week by sharing song and dance at a small showing for invited guests of Central Coast Elders and community at Nhangara Barayi, NAISDA’s outdoor dancing ground and learning space.

The TSRA will cease its Native Title services on 30 June 2022.

Our families have just come out of our second round of isolation and all I can say is Koeyma Eso to all of those who’ve checked in and gone shopping for us!

One thing that didn’t stop when we went into isolation were my Strait Fitness sessions.

We had committed people smash the sessions day in day out regardless of the weather and who turned up.

To all the other people out smashing goals and making healthier choices - KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK! You’re all doing amazing, and it’s deadly too see.

A question to ask yourself: Who do you surround yourself and your family with?

Are they people who are encouraging and positive, or people who put you down and don’t support you?

Can you rely on these people in those ‘hard’ times?

If you can’t, are they worth being in your circle?

People in your circle should be supporting you in your health and fitness journey – not putting you down for wanting to make ‘healthier choices’.

They should be encouraging you to do sessions, and for you to become the best version of yourself.

If they’re not – do they actually support you?

A quick little session to keep you going: Set the timer for 10 minutes and perform each exercise 5x reps each – over and over.

Getting behind our ICBL basketball kids This year’s Indigenous Community Basketball League (ICBL) kicked off in most locations across the country over the past week, with teams playing hard alongside their loyal teams of supporters who were working just as hard behind the scenes, to help make this year’s round a success.

Pictured here, with thanks to Kaylynn Zaro, are some of the hard working supporters of the Cairns – or Queensland North – competition, which was also attended by Indigenous Basketball Australia (IBA) head of Basketball Operations Joel Kahlu.

Competitions such as this would never get off the ground without the support of parents, teachers, families and friends who take up those all-important roles of getting everything off the court – from catering to car pooling to coaching – done and dusted.

Indigenous round kicks off new rule for basketball players PIC BY christine howeS The National Basketball League’s new Indigenous Player Rule will help unearth young Indigenous talent across the country, Cairns Taipans star Nate Jawai says.

The NBL announced the measures to coincide with the league’s second ever Indigenous round to encourage clubs to recruit eligible Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander players in a bid to increase representation, retain talent and develop genuine pathways to the elite level.

An eligible Indigenous player is an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander who has never been fully contracted by an NBL club, is in the first six years of his professional career and has not played

professionally anywhere else.

Jawai said the new rule was a step forward.

“I’m really pleased to see that the NBL are introducing genuine Indigenous pathways moving forward,” Jawai said via Newscorp.

“There is a lot of untapped Aboriginal and Torres Strait talent in this country and all sports codes have a responsibility to reduce the barrier to entry for them, and actively pursue their potential.

“Hopefully, this is a step closer to that.”

NBL Chief Operating Officer Vince Crivelli said the league was committed to ensuring its work in the Indigenous space created meaningful, impactful, stable and tangible benefits.

“We have been so inspired in our past with

contributions from great Indigenous athletes,” he told SEN. “The Indigenous community love their basketball and it is time we take some active steps to partner with them and see how we can further develop some amazing talent.”

The NBL said the the goal of the Indigenous Rounds, which start tomorrow, were to “celebrate, recognise and acknowledge Indigenous culture across Australia and New Zealand”.

The six Indigenous players in the NBL are: Nathan Jawai (Cairns Taipans), Tamuri Wigness (Brisbane

Bullets), Biwali Bayles (Sydney Kings), William Hickey (Melbourne United), William McDowell-White (New Zealand Breakers) and Keanu Pinder (Cairns Taipans). Assistant coaches, Kerry Williams (Cairns Taipans) and Tyson Demos (Illawarra Hawks) are also Indigenous.

Players and officials travelled 700km from Townsville to Rockhampton by mini bus for the event.

The mixed team contested the 13-15 years division, despite most of them being aged between 10- and 13-years-old.

Coach Nicole Ross said she was delighted with their performance.

“Most of our players were younger than a lot of others,” she said. “They really bonded and enjoyed the carnival.”

Hamiso’s ice-breaking try pivotal to big win story BY ALF WILSON PIC BY SCOTT DAVIS An ice-breaking try by star fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow may prove to be a defining moment for the Cowboys’ in this year’s looming NRL season.

Hamiso crossed the line in the first half of the team’s 26-6 NRL trial win over the Brisbane Broncos

in Mackay on Saturday night.

He produced the best play of the game when the Broncos were leading 6-nil after a try in just the second minute.

In the 21st minute, Hamiso took advantage of a broken defensive line by kicking for himself and racing through to score the first of North Queensland’s four tries.

His individual effort shifted

the momentum in favour of the Cowboys with Hamiso continuing to look sharp and dangerous whenever he touched the ball.

Strong Cowboys defence then prevailed and the side kept their arch rivals scoreless for the remainder of the game.

North Queensland coach Todd Payten said he was delighted with the form of Hamiso.

The Cowboys finished 15th in 2021 and will meet the Sydney Bulldogs in Townsville for round one of the NRL Telstra premiership on 13 March.

Big things are expected from Hamiso this season and his form will go a long way in determining where the Cowboys finish on the ladder.

The Cowboys are considered a 50-1 chance of winning the flag by betting companies.

The Cairns Taipans snapped a four-game losing streak with a much-needed 73-69 win over the Brisbane Bullets last week.

The Taipans got off to a hot start and never looked back, leading from start-to-finish, and moving the squad out of last place with the victory.

In-form Keanu Pinder, told the post-game media conference it was great to get a win.

“It feels great to finally get a win, because there’s been so

many problems that we’ve had to try and fix,” he said.

“We’re finally on the upward slant of doing that. It feels good.

It feels really good.”

Local star Nathan Jawai – not expected to make the court again for another few weeks – and Brisbane Bullet Tamuri Wigness both spent the game cheering their respective teams on from the benches.

The NBL says Tamuri is a highly touted prospect of the future, who has experience playing in the NBA Global Academy across three years.

During NBA All-Star weekends, Wigness has appeared at Basketball Without Borders Global Camps on two occasions.

In 2019, the guard was named in the All-Tournament side.

Tamuri also played for Australia at junior levels, the 19-year-old is definitely a player to watch this season as he continues to develop his game.

The loss was another blow to Brisbane’s fading finals hopes as they had, at the time, lost seven of their last eight games.
