ADF tracks accused ship in Straits

BY KANTESHA TAKAI

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has confirmed the Chinese warship accused of firing a military grade laser at a RAAF Aircraft last week has passed through the Torres Strait. The unprovoked incident occurred in the Arafura Sea, off the coast of the Northern Territory, where a Chinese PLA-N Luyang-class guided

missile destroyer and a PLA-N Yuzhao-class amphibious transport dock vessel steamed east towards the Coral Sea. The ships were later sighted in Torres Strait waters on Friday morning, before the Department of Defence released an official statement on Saturday, condemning the act as unprofessional and unsafe. The RAAF Aircraft was conducting routine maritime surveillance

within Australia’s exclusive economic zone when it was targeted by the Chinese vessel’s laser. While all modern warships are equipped with lasers, the Department of Defence has confirmed the actions of the ship were not within professional military operating standards and had the potential to endanger military lives. Both ships are in the Coral Sea.
