Pleas for ‘no panic’ as COVID spreads Families and friends of those in communities where COVID is confirmed are urged by authorities not to panic, nor to be complacent, Torres Strait Island Regional Council Mayor Phillemon Mosby says.

“Be diligent and comply with the Chief Health Officer and health directives,” he said.

The Torres & Cape Hospital and Health Service (TCHHS) reported more than 200 cases across the region earlier this week.

Of those more than 30 were on Waiben, more than 20 in the NPA

and at least 15 were on outer islands of the Torres Strait,including Badu and Masig.

Cr Mosby said he was very concerned.

“Going forward, we will continue to manage all variables which are within our control to mitigate the further spread of COVID-19 in our communities,” he said.

“We remain committed to working with Queensland Health as the lead agency to protect our people and communities.”

Looking after our most vulnerable

As part of the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service Covid-19 Response, the health service has partnered in the Torres Strait with local key stakeholders to work together to provide care services and support to vulnerable clients.

The health service’s Vulnerable Clients Management Team coordinators Melita Abednego and Aggie Hankin said they would be contacting all vulnerable clients in the region for a weekly welfare check and to ensure they feel supported.

Ms Hankin said they would be working across the whole of the Torres Strait.

“Vulnerable clients are our families and family members, also community people who are 50s years and over who have a chronic condition or multiple chronic conditions,” she said.

“We also want to encourage all our vulnerable clients to isolate themselves you know, when you’re at home as much as possible, and this will decrease your risk of getting COVID, it’s about your safety within your home as well as in the community.

“We just want to ensure that people are in the right frame of mind when they’re at home being isolated, and they’re getting that support from other services, whether it’s in social emotional wellbeing or other things that they need assistance with.”

Ms Abednego said their partners included local stakeholders such as the Torres Strait Regional Authority, Torres Strait Island Regional Council, Wakai Waian, IBIS and the Thursday Island Pharmacy.

“The team will be making calls to the client each week and introduce themselves, that they are from Queensland Health,” she said.

“Firstly (we will) update any contact and medical details that might need to change, some questions around social and emotional wellbeing, checking on the welfare of the client at home, and if they need any assistance or support from the us. “(We are) encouraging families to make sure they have a good support network at home, whether it be family or close friends, and that they have a plan on how to support each other during this time as well.”

She said they acknowledged some of the health phone numbers were ‘private’, causing problems for some clients.

“If you see private calls come through during the day please answer because it might be us reaching out to you to check if you need that help or support at home,” she said.

“Stay safe, stay or remain home during this time if you can, or as much as possible.

“If you can work from home, please have that discussion with your employer.

“Always stay in touch and know you’ve got someone out there to talk to, make sure you’ve got your support group around you whether it’s your close family members or close friends.

“I guess the other important thing to mention is to make sure families are vaccinated, encourage them to be vaccinated if they’re not, and have the booster as well.”

Perhaps not in this COVID situation, and please don’t take this as medical advice, go and see a proper doctor if you’re worried about anything.

For me, just seeing people coughing and sneezing is enough to encourage me to boost my immune system.

Strange times indeed, and hopefully not everybody is stuck at home with a close COVID contact doing ISO. In these uncertain times we know people’s mental stability is on the edge with this extra stress.

OK, you don’t have to be Einstein to work that one out, but how much have you considered your own mental health during this time?

How many times have you ever been so overwhelmed with things and said ‘if only I had the time’.Guess what: now you do.

This could be a good time to go through that old box of photos and maybe digitise them, or sort them out and send them to families – to put a smile on their face, or if they permit, post them

on Facebook.

Maybe begin researching your family tree because you can do most of that at home these days.

Did you always wish you had the time to read or write a book? ... BING!!

You know the thing is to focus on something, occupy your mind and choose a goal.

The lockdown will pass much faster and at the end of it you will have actually achieved something.

And hopefully not expanded your waist so much you can’t get out the door!

What are you waiting for?

Go and write your best seller.

In the meantime, talk to someone about how you are coping with this pandemic, or any other crisis you might be going through.

Most important of all: stay safe, stay positive and always be kind.

Positive? Five simple steps to take As more people test positive to COVID-19, it’s vital the community knows what to do – and what not to do – if they get ‘that’ text message.

Queensland’s Chief Health Officer Dr John Gerrard said there were five simple steps to take if you were notified you are positive, and one thing you shouldn’t do unless you need to.

“As expected, cases of COVID-19 are increasing significantly and popping up right across the state,” Dr Gerrard said.

“Most people will be relatively well and will only have mild symptoms,

meaning they will be cared for at home.

“We are receiving reports of people contacting Triple Zero or going to an emergency department when they receive their text message because they think that’s what they should do.

“If anyone has severe symptoms like chest pain or breathlessness, they should absolutely call for an ambulance.

“For everyone else who has mild symptoms, I want to share with you the first five things you should do when you test positive to COVID-19.

“The first thing you

should do is isolate, and tell anyone who usually lives with you to get tested as soon as possible and also isolate.

“Secondly, you’ll receive a call or text from Queensland Health asking you five survey questions about your symptoms and your situation, so we can determine if you can care for yourself at home or if you need care in a hospital.

“Next, step 3, is to tell the people you have been in contact with recently.

“It’s important they get tested as soon as possible and quarantine.

“The fourth step is to get the things you need,

because you’ll most likely be isolating at home for up to 14 days.

“And finally, the fifth step is to look after yourself by keeping a symptom diary, and keeping healthy and active at home, including actively looking after your mental wellbeing.

“If everyone follows these steps as their first actions when they’re notified they have COVID-19, it will help keep our emergency services available for emergencies.”

Cultural heritage laws under review All Queenslanders are invited to have their say on a review of the state’s Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage laws Minister for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Craig Crawford says.

He said it was nearly 20 years since the implementation of the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003 and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Heritage Act 2003.

“We want to make sure we have modern and effective cultural heritage laws for the benefit of all Queenslanders,’’ Mr Crawford said.

“We’d especially like to hear your thoughts on ways First Nations people – as custodians of cultural heritage – can take a lead role in cultural heritage management and decision-making.”

Queensland’s cultural heritage laws provide a framework to protect and conserve cultural heritage – with more than 51,000 locations recorded across the state.

“We are home to two of the oldest living cultures on earth,’’ Mr Crawford said.

“We need to modernise the legislative framework responsible for preserving the ancient cultural heritage of Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people in Queensland.

“Initial feedback in 2019 and 2020 provided a solid basis to inform options for further review.

“Now, we’d like to receive

your feedback on our proposals for Queensland’s cultural heritage laws for the future.

“We want to achieve the right balance between protecting and conserving our state’s rich cultural heritage while achieving positive outcomes for Aboriginal,

Torres Strait and non-Indigenous Queenslanders.”

Nominations open to find Queensland’s greatest There’s no time to wait - nominate a Queensland Great!

Now is the time to recognise outstanding Queenslanders who have educated, captivated, and enriched the state with 2022 Queensland Greats Award nominations closing on 31 January 2022 Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says.

She said the awards were a unique opportunity to celebrate exceptional Queensland individuals and institutions.

“Queensland Greats have demonstrated a long term and exceptional commitment to enhancing the lives of Queenslanders, and can be found anywhere across our State,” the

Premier said.

“They are the people in our communities who have shown courage, resilience, perseverance, innovation or excellence to improve the way we live.”

Since 2001, 108 individuals, 17 institutions, seven posthumous recipients and one honorary recipient have been recognised as Queensland Greats.

Nominations are accepted across three categories — individual, institution and posthumous.

“I encourage Queenslanders to think about the individuals and institutions who have helped to shape their world and the

development of our state,” the Premier said.

“This is an opportunity to celebrate their achievements by nominating them for a Queensland Greats Award.”

Last year’s recipients included social justice advocate Karyn Walsh AM from advocacy and support organisation Micah Projects, clinical social worker and wellbeing champion – and TSIMA board member – Aunty Ivy Trevallion, humanitarian and women’s health champion Professor Ajay Rane OAM, and the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute.

A strong call for action: NAIDOC grants open under 2022 theme Grants to host local activities celebrating NAIDOC are now open, Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM, MP says.

“I invite all Australians to join in the celebrations and apply for a grant to host a local activity in support of the week,” he said.

“I also look forward to the return of the National NAIDOC Awards Ceremony, to be held in-person on 2 July in Narrm (Melbourne).

EPA formation possible

Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said the launch of public consultation into the formation of an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was an important election commitment the Government was committed to progressing.

“We made an election commitment to investigate and consult on the establishment of an independent Environmental Protection Agency to protect our environment, provide greater investment certainty, and support economic recovery,” Minister Scanlon said.

“Queensland is the only state in Australia without an external independent Environmental Protection Agency.

“We want to hear from Queenslanders about what they think when it comes to an environmental protection agency.

“The survey is quick and easy and open to all Queenslanders who have a view on environmental protection.

OCTOGENARIAN Millianna Davey couldn’t have had a better birthday gift than to visit her home Island Erub to spend Christmas with family and friends.

On 14 December, Millianna who lives in Townsville, arrived on Erub and was delighted to see so many relatives.

“I had family members from end to end of Erub and stayed here until 30 December,” she said.

“I turned 80 on 8 August and it was my wish to come here to Darnley for Christmas.”

Millianna stayed with a niece and enjoyed some wonderful family moments, she was happy to share.

“A grandson caught some fish from the beach and we liked that,” she said.

The quietly spoken Millianna said the Erub weather was kind which made the long trip even more enjoyable.

“I last was here six years ago and wanted to visit Erub again and it has been so great,” she said.

Millianna said her late husband worked for Queensland Railways at many destinations west of Townsville while she was a gifted craftswomen who had held stalls at several Townsville Cultural Festivals, Mabo Day celebrations, NAIDOC and other events.

BY VANESSA SEEKEE In World War Two Horn Island was the most advanced allied airbase in Australia with approximately 5000 troops and airmen stationed on the island by the end of 1942.

It was the only place in Australia where Indigenous and non-Indigenous soldiers served together in such large numbers, with 880 Torres Strait Island volunteers.

It was also the second most attacked location in Australia.

Today the island is a time capsule for the era, with many sites still in existence.

Without conservation however, the stories of the men and women who served on the island would disappear with time.

Last year the Horn Island War Memorial Preservation Society (HIWMPS) received a grant from the Department of Premier and Cabinet’s Queensland Veteran’s Memorial Grant Program.

The grant allowed the next stage of the Horn Island WW2 Conservation Project to be completed with interpretive signs and a Conservation Management Plan written for the 34th Aust Hvy AA Bty site at King Point.

The signs were installed at the King Point recreation area on the beach and at the King Point artillery site.

It was the first sign to depict Kaurareg stories on the island.

At the entrance to the gun pit containing the 3.7 inch gun, another sign explains the history of artillery and the conservation of the gun.

shell signs have been installed inside the ammunition bays to portray how they would have looked fully stacked with ammunition shells.

Head Archaeologist for the project, Gordon Grimwade, said they were delighted.

“Our team is delighted to have been involved in the recently completed conservation and interpretation project at King Point B Battery site,” he said.

“Completing additional interpretive signage and a Conservation Management Plan will enhance efforts to gain a broader and long overdue recognition of the Torres Strait in Australia’s defence during World War Two.” The HIWMPS was

formed by World War Two veterans who served on Horn Island, and their families, to apply for funding and work with the community to see these sites preserved.

Where once they served in these sites, now – 80 years later – they are working to see them preserved for future generations.

Ex-Staff Sergeant of the 34th Aust. Hvy AA Bty and President of the Society, Gordon Cameron OAM, said their most recent work was another step forward.

“Since our small battery of gunners left Horn Island in 1944 after defending our country, we have been surprised how little acknowledgement this front-line entrance to Australia receives,” he said.

“These interpretative signs and the conservation management plan are another step forward to promote the significance of Torres Strait in Australian history.

“As our ranks grow very thin we hope our families, and all descendants of the Torres Strait Light Infantry soldiers who fought beside us, will learn from these messages and carry on the spirit of mateship.”

The installation of these signs will greatly enhance visitors’ experiences and portray the link between the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion and those units who served on Horn Island alongside them.

In addition, for the first time, community and visitors will be able to read of Kaurareg stories at Kausar, King Point, and learn of the history of the area.

The next stage of the project is expected to start in the coming weeks.

NAIDOC theme a call to action In 2022, the year that is the 30th anniversary of the Mabo decision, the National NAIDOC Week theme is Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!, reflecting a continuation of mobilising themes of previous years, national committee member Kenny Bedford writes…

They have included Always was, Always will be and before that Voice, Treaty, Truth.

Both are themes which have reinforced the messages: we are of our land and sea; we won’t take ‘no, we know better’ for an answer from Government; we are still here seeking justice; and, we are not giving up.

For many Torres Strait Islanders the words ‘get up, stand up’ are likely to trigger in our minds the everpresent voice of Bob Marley, backed by the Wailers, calling us to action.

To ‘Get up, stand up.

Stand up for your rights’.

Well beyond the borders of Jamaica, to Indigenous peoples across the world, the Rasta Chant has struck a chord with the oppressed far and wide, and has been a motivator to all: to ‘don’t give up the fight’.

And so Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! builds on

the principles of this call to action, for us to move, motivate, mobilise and support one another to effect positive change.

Pure people power.

Now, more than ever we need to be seen, we need to be heard, we need to be listened to, and we need to be supported by all Australians.

We need a ‘fair go’, as was called for in the 2017 Uluru Statement of the Heart and as is called for by the From the Heart Campaign.

This struggle and fight is not new, it is a continuation.

Torres Strait Islanders have always fought for recognition and control of our identity and rights.

The successful Maritime Strike of our forebears, was a fight for recognition of our Torres Strait Islander identity.

The Mabo decision, handed down three decades ago, is another example of our impact.

The fight continues to build on the work of those who fought before us.

More than 3000 submissions were made to the recently released Indigenous Voice Codesign Report where close to 90 per cent called for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament to be protected by the Australian Constitution.

Applications open for CIAF annual training project Applications are open for the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) annual training project.

Four successful trainees will learn all facets of learning skills from four key departments of CIAF, culminating in a Certificate I in Business.

Supported by the Queensland Government Department of Employment, Small Business & Training (forming part of a skilling Queenslanders for work initiative), the CIAF training program is aimed at enhancing the skills of aspiring and emerging Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander arts workers.

Applications close on 14 February.

Successful applicants will be notified by 28 February, and be ready to start on 14 March.

Applications should include a brief letter detailing experience, area of interest, contact details, town and suburb of residence, and a personal statement and should be emailed to Training Project Manager Megsi O’Toole.

No longer do we trust a legislated representative body that can be dismantled at the whim of Government.

Constitutional protection requires voting Australians to go to a successful Referendum.

It is a clear target – one we will all need to Get up! Stand up! Show up! for.

The majority of Australians support the idea of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people having a Voice protected by the Constitution – they understand, unlike Government, that we deserve a fair go.

From the Heart campaign polling has current Australian public support of a ‘yes’ vote for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament at 57 per cent, with only 16 per cent opposing the idea.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders supporters are at 80 per cent, according to the poll.

There is an unsure group of voters in between that we have to convince to join us, not only for our sake and future, but for the benefit of all Australians.

It’s important our peoples are seen, are listened to and are supported.

It is time to get up, stand up and show up!

Cricket carnival kicks off

BY ALF WILSON At least 20 teams will have players of Torres Strait descent at the Goldfield Ashes cricket carnival in Charters Towers this weekend.

Australia’s biggest cricket carnival will be held across no less than 60 fields from tomorrow until Sunday.

The Goldfield Ashes were born in 1948 with just six teams and has since grown to become an Aussie sporting icon.

Covid-19 resulted in the 2021 carnival being cancelled but 240 teams competed in four men’s and a women’s division the year before.

Charters Towers Cricket Association spokeswoman Kerri Forno told the Torres News the carnival would go ahead.

“A total of 219 teams have nominated, some others have now withdrawn but we still have over 200 teams in the competition,” Forno said.

Lui may play for Cowboys story and pics

BY ALF WILSON Former NRL and English Superleague star Robert Lui has not ruled out a surprise return to the North Queensland Cowboys at some stage of the 2022 season – if the club wants him.

The 32-year-old Lui returned to Townsville last month from England and announced his retirement from the NRL before signing with the Queensland Intrust Super Cup side, the Townsville & District Mendi Blackhawks.

Last week southern media reported Lui could be a shock contender for a spot in Cowboys coach Todd Payten’s team this season.

Lui played beside Payten at the West Tigers in 2009.

They said Lui could prove a handy back-up for another veteran, the Cowboys new marquee halfback signing Chad Townsend.

Former Kangaroos, Tigers and Cowboys coach Tim Sheens, who handed Lui his NRL debut and also took him to England, said he believed the long-serving half could be an asset to the Cowboys.

“He is a smart player and gained a lot of confidence in Super League – he could be a surprise packet,” Sheens told media.

Speaking to the Torres News last weekend, Lui said he wouldn’t say no if needed by the Cowboys in 2022.

“I am a local boy and the Cowboys are a local team and it would be good to play at that great new stadium,” Lui said.

Lui said he was relishing training with the Cowboys feeder club the Townsville Blackhawks and was looking forward to reuniting with fellow Torres Strait Islander Shaun Nona.

“Shaun has been recovering from an achilles injury and started running at training this week,” Lui said.

“He should return in week five or six of the season.

“We played together at the Cairns-based Northern Pride some years ago.”

The Townsville Lightning under-18 boys’ team found themselves having to draw courage and resilience before they even hit the courts to play their first basketball game in the BQ State Championships last week.

Before travelling to their first tournament on the Gold Coast the team, which includes Robert-James See Kee and Remy Tom, was rocked with news their coach, manager and three players had to be sidelined due to Covid-19.

With only seven players, substitute coach and manager, the Division 2 team played all their games the best they could.

Despite not having any wins during

BY VELMA GARA the rounds the boys played their hearts out, finally finding their rhythm to defeat Burdekin Wildcats 66-43 and placing them 11th in the competition.

“The team nearly had to withdraw from the tournament, but thankfully they didn’t,” parent Merissa Kris said “Us, the parents, are so proud of them.”

The Lightning girls team, which includes Maletta See Kee, had more success, finishing fifth in the Division 2 competition.

They had two wins and a loss during

the rounds, then two wins in the cross over before defeating South West Metro Pirates 66-37.

It was a family affair for RobertJames, Maletta and Remy – their great, great grandfathers are brothers, Josiah and Charlie Sailor.

Remy is the great-grandson of Frederick Sailor who is the son of Charlie Watia Sailor and Louisa Pitt.

Robert-James and Maletta are the great-grandchildren of Gabie Kris nee Sailor, who is the daughter of Josiah Sailor and Annie Sailor nee Ahmad.

Charlie is the fourth child and Josiah is the fifth child of Sela and Gemai Sailor.

Mosby takes her place in NRLW comp The Brisbane Broncos have bolstered their NRLW squad with the addition of quality outside back Hagiga (Haj) Mosby, a former Australian Rugby Sevens and Queensland Junior Touch Football representative.

“Haj is a very talented and exciting outside back,” Broncos NRLW Coach Kelvin Wright said.

“Haj (came) to Brisbane (to) join the squad in early January, where she will also continue her Bachelor of Education.

“In the meantime Haj (was) with her family on Thursday Island, preparing for a great season and year ahead.”

Proud Mum Fauziah Mosby said she was always proud of Hagiga.

“I’ve always admired her strength and determination,” she said.

“Especially over the past year, it has been very challenging for our family.

“Eso to our family, friends and community for their support, and to the Broncos officials for giving her this opportunity.”

The season kicks off on Sunday 27 February against the Roosters at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle.
