Christmas is on its way to the more remote communities of Zenadth Kes, thanks to a toy drive by Queensland Health’s Early Childhood Approach Program (ECAP). ECAP Community Engagement Officer Rita Kebisu said play time was an important part of a child’s early development and they had gotten behind the Christmas Toy Drive in the hope it would bring a little extra cheer to remote islands with limited access to retailers. “We worked closely with TSIRC and Mura Kosker to find out what

families have been donating toys. “We know when we deliver the toys to the outer islands the kids are going to be overwhelmed with what they have to play with, because they don’t [have the same] opportunities as here on TI or further south.” Ms Kebisu said delivery was likely to be made in the New Year so families still had time to donate and were welcome to contact her directly if they have questions. “Whatever you think kids could play with, we’re able to ship out,” she said. “I’m not talking about big playing playgrounds or slides or anything,

just little things that we can put together for kids to play with or even like play mats. “We’ve been getting books as well, for parent or carers to read to the children. “We’ve just overwhelmed with the support that we’re getting, big esso everybody. “We all need a bit of joy in the New Year, especially with what we’ve been through this year.” ECAP was launched in August this year to help improve the lives of children who may be vulnerable to developmental delays or difficulties.
