abopane Police have issued a stern warning to members of the public to be vigilant when withdrawing large sums of

money.

This happened during the launch of a safety campaign initiative by Corporate Communication and Victim Support at Mabopane Square Mall as part of the National season visibility recently.

With the festive season upon us, Police have warned shoppers to be more vigilant and take extra precautions during this period.

tain Rheineth Motlana said “Community members are urged to be more vigilant and to be escorted by a family member when making large cash withdrawal, carry as little cash as possible, never make bank visits public even to close people to you.”

“Vary the days and times on which you deposit cash, do not openly display the money you are depositing while you are still standing in a queue, do not give your casual labourer wages in full view of the public, Victims are being followed from the banks after making a large cash withdrawals to their residences or any other place where it is easy to rob them,” said Motlana.

This comes after the six suspects were found in possession of an estimate of 80 kilograms of copper and tried to bribe the arresting officers with R10 000 cash

t has been pouring cats and dogs for the DA-led multiparty administration in the City of Tshwane, with Gauteng MEC COGTA Lebogang Maile threatening to place the municipality under administration following allegations of mismanagement of funds, poor service deliveries and chaos in the council.

The Gauteng North High Court reversed council resolution to oust both Mayor Stevens Mokgalapa and Speaker Katlego Mathebe.

Mawela was speaking during a multi-disciplinary Operation O Kae Molao in the townships across Region 1 in Tshwane recently.

He engaged different stakeholders and assured them of high police visibility at different hotspots like shopping complex.

The police managed to recovered stolen vehicles, arrested over 200 suspect wanted various crimes and suspect trying to bribe police of-

“No stone will be left unturned, we will continue to focus on the tracing and arresting of suspects wanted for serious and violent crimes especially, gender based violence. Integrated operations will be conducted over and above the usual O Kae Molao and weekends operations, with more intensity and focus on generators of crime such as liquor.

“Operations of this nature, over and above Operation Okae Molao, will continue and will be intensified as police gear up to turn the tide against crime. With these, police will also be conducting more operations to ensure that the residents enjoy a safer festive season,” said Mawela.

The family of Matha Waya needs help find their missing mother.

Waya was last seen in 2004 at Mathibestad.

According to her daughter Ellen Nkoma, life has been a living hell for her family since Waya’s dissapearance.

“As the family we do not know much about her. We do not know

exactly where she comes from or what happened to her. We are appealing to anyone who might have information about her whereabouts to please contact the family. We just need closure on the issue. ,” said Nkoma.

We could have done that,” said Maile.

he Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Tshwane, released a statement urging members of society to report any animal cruelty to them.

This comes after the centre received an emergency call recently, from Moruka Dibetso, informing SPCA’s Inspector Andrew Kekana about a badly injured medium size donkey near his property. The location was identified as Pitswane Section, GaSeabe at Dr J.S. Moroka Municipality, which is near Bella Bella.

“I arrived round about midnight at the given location. Upon arrival at the tavern, I found the donkey, and assessed it. The donkey was still alive, lying on the street, but with both of the hind legs missing. I checked the area - no blood was seen, which meant that the donkey couldn’t have been attacked in front of the tavern,” said Kekana.

He further stated that the donkey appeared to have used its stumps to try to walk until where it was found by dragging his hind legs in an attempt to move forward, as soil and pieces of grass could be seen on the bloody stumps of his hind legs.

“Due to the fact that the donkey was in pain and suffering, a decision was taken to put the donkey down, as to stop the pain and suffering. The carcass was then removed and brought to the Society,” Kekana told Tshwane Bulletin.

Kekana said: “We are still investigating the matter, and appeal to the public to assist us, should they have any further information related to the person who could have committed this act of cruelty. The Animals Protection Act no. 71 of 1962 clearly states that any person harms an animal shall be guilty of committing an offence. SPCA Tshwane will not tolerate such heinous crimes and they will be taken seriously in getting a conviction against the perpetrator(s).”

he MEC of Health in Gauteng Bandile Masuku has confirmed a rise in the number of baby deaths experienced at Dr George Mukhari Hospital in the past five years.

The deaths rose from 232 in 2013 to 302 deaths in 2018.

The ICU number deaths de-

creased from 2,239 in 2013 to 1,604 in 2018.

Masuku was answering questions posed to him in the provincial legislature by the Democratic Alliance’s shadow MEC of Health Jack Bloom recently.

He said premature birth was the main reason for the increase in the number of deaths; “The final cause of death in these patients would need a record review to make an accurate final cause of death.

The high mortality rates can be attributed to high burden of disease in pregnant patients, a high number of

referrals of high-risk patients from surrounding clinics and district hospitals, inadequate infrastructure to accommodate all neonates, resulting in overcrowding of the neonatal ward and increasing the risk of sepsis,” said Masuku.

Masuku said measures have been put in place to strengthen infection prevention and control.

Bloom said he was not satisfied with Masuku’s response; “The causes of the sharp rise in baby deaths should have received urgent attention and action taken, particu-

larly in the case of klebsiella, which is linked to poor infection controls.

Though Masuku says that the wards are regularly cleaned, staff at the hospital have expressed concern to me that disinfection measures need to be improved.

“We need accurate and speedy monitoring of the causes of baby deaths at this hospital to ensure that all avoidable deaths are prevented,” said Bloom.

Measures have been put in place to strengthen infection prevention and control, said Kekana.

Temba police brief portfolio committee members

By Tshepo Marutha The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety recently conducted one of its routine oversight visits to the Temba Police Stations in Hammanskraal.

The visit forms part of the committee visit to the top 40 priority stations in province.They are identified as police stations located in communities where the levels of crime are extremely high as compared to other areas in the province.

The Committee was briefed by Senior Police Officials at the Temba Police Station on the progress made in the investigations on the murder of ANCYL member Lethabo Nkoana.

Nkoana was shot dead during a political gathering which took place at the Temba Stadium in Hammanskraal recently.

It is believe that Nkoana was allegedly shot dead after a scuffle which broke out during the leagues gathering.

Members of the committee led by its Chairperson Thebe Khumalo applauded MEC for Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko and the Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela for their dedication and commitment in resolving the case.

“As committee urges SAPS in Gauteng to deal with cases of this nature with the seriousness they deserve and the judiciary to give perpetrators harsher sentences for violent crimes to ensure that no life is lost without extreme consequences.

Rampedi described it as an impossible dream that took over 10 years to realize. Situated right in the heart of Soshanguve, Botshilu Private Hospital boost’s over 200 beds, three theatres, rooms for specialist doctors and consulting rooms for part-time medical staff.

The beds include six in the intensive care unit, four neo-natal beds, 27 medical and 38 surgical beds, 10 in the paediatric ward and 15 in maternity.

“Today Botshilu Private Hospital is turning 5 years. It has been 5 years of providing affordable healthcare.

This is a facility that can stand on its own anywhere in the world, without the assistance of any major

partners,” said Rampedi.

The hospital offers cardiothoracic surgery, general, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, paediatrics, pathology, dermatology, endocrinology, obstetrics and gynaecology.

It also has a “crisis room” to which victims of rape and other forms of abuse will be taken for their initial consultation in privacy before they are taken to the relevant departments for treatment.

Tshepo Rapudi from Public Investment Corporation said as the principal investor in the project they are convinced that they made the right decision in planting a seed in the project. “ Botshilu is coming out of its infancy stage. We are convinced that as the PIC we made the right decision. We are happy that the hospital has managed to create direct and indirect jobs. Government employees must take care of this facility because they build it and stimulate local economy,” said Rapudi.

W

hile speaking during 16 days for activism of no violence against violence on women and children Colonel Thomas Molefe said the level of Gender-Based Vio-

lence (GBV) in the country are shockingly high.

He said it is high time that as society we should face the uncomfortable truth that the perpetrators of gender-based violence are often close closer home than we are willing to admit.

Molefe was speaking during an event earmarked to observe the internationally institutionalized activism of no violence on women and children organised by POPC-

RU and Family Opposing Women and Children Abuse at Wilderveldt Multi Purpose Centre recently.

“We can no longer sit back and be spectators while violence against women remains a crisis. We need to speak up in one voice and say ‘enough is enough.’ But other swill say this tune has been sung in many different melodies.

“It has been sung by politicians, government officials, gender-based activists, even men and women

in general. As society we have to embark on an ongoing process of public engagement and activism to end violence against women, children and address systemic gender inequalities,” said Molefe.

This comes at a time when the country is still reeling in shock following the heinous murder and rape of University of Cape Town student Uyinene Mrwetyana and Precious Ramabulana to name a few.

“As parents we are even afraid to send our kids to school because we do not know what will happen to them. It seems like these monsters and savages are out competing against each other to see who is more evil than the other.

“The sad reality is that the perpetuate of such heinous acts are closer to home than we are willing to acknowledge. Perpetrators of these acts are not barbarians from another planet. They are our brothers, uncles, teachers, priests, fathers and at times well-respected individuals,” said Molefe.

He called on members of community to stop negotiating with perpetrator of gender-based violence and report them to the police.

“You we need to stop saying the police are not working and assume that they are going to fail you. You have to lay charges against these creatures and if you are not happy with the way they are handling your case you can report them,” said Molefe

n the name of promoting fitness as well as wellness, AcedSports hosted an Aerobics Colour Festival at Rethabile Sports Grounds in Mamelodi East recently.

The goal of the event was to promote healthy living allround. The event also encouraged community members to exercise and participate in physical activities to stay healthy. Founder of AcedSports Tshepho Mamashela said through this aerobics colour drive, their organisation is able to improve the quality of health in the community through various physical activities with the hope of reducing health risks.

“The Aerobics Colour Festival is an annual concept that is aimed to keep the whole family active on the day. We thought this was going to be our ‘finale’ [end-ofthe-year event]. But it seems like the community want more of this.

We were blessed to have a crowd attendance of more than 500 people, with the tally of 80 children,” said Mamashela.

He said: “We had other activities that kept the crowd entertained such as; dance and the best dressed competitions. The prices that were on offer for the winners were sports merchandise which included; buffer, trucker caps, t-shirts as well as wrist wallets amongst others. So we are looking forward to doing this again very soon before the end of the year.”

Fabulous contestants shine at the beauty pageant

Participants advocate for greater causes

Once thought to be superficial contests promoting nothing but unrealistic ideals [glitz and glamour], the industry of beauty pageants seems to have taken a positive turn over the past few years, where participants advocate for greater causes which are driven by philanthropic work.

Young men and women from Ga-Rankuwa and surrounding areas dazzled the audience at the first edition of the Mr and Miss Teen Ga-Rankuwa held at YMCA Hall in Zone 5 recently. The pageant which made its debut is set to be an annual event that will provide a stellar platform for youth to showcase their God given talents.

Pageant organiser Tsietsi Mathibedi said the pageant is a search for a zestful young man and woman in their teens. “We want to empower and promote teenagers.

We want to shift their focus from social ills such as; teenage pregnancy and substance abuse, to boosting their confidence as well as unlocking their true potential,” said Mathibedi.

Kamogelo Kaole who comes from Soshanguve block M was crowned Miss Teen Ga-Rankuwa 2019. She said: “I think it was a successful event and above all, we

had so much fun as contestants, the venue was full of positive people. I learned a lot from the organisation [Minding the Gap]. And for me, this means a start of a beautiful journey with more opportunities and growth.”

Mr Teen winner Oarabile Molotjwa from Ga-Rankuwa Extension 24 said he was honoured to be part of the event. “I would like to thank Tsietsi and Nicholas for the training they gave us. I am now going to focus on attracting more boys to my organisation called Empowering Boys to become Responsible Men (EBRM). It focuses on a boy child because boys are somehow neglected in society,” said Molotjwa.

“We came up with this experimental campaign to give kids an opportunity to see what is happening behind the ‘Santa World.’ It has been running from 22 November and will end on 21 December. No spend is required, it’s called ‘What is Your Wish For Your Child.’

You have to select from 5 options and tick only one wish for your child. The winner will be announced on the 23 Dec. The concept behind the campaign is to give kids an opportunity to believe that gifts are from Santa. earners from different schools from Tshwane areas flexed their brain muscles vying for top honours as Thutopele Academy hosted its sixth annual spelling bee competition, at the Winterveldt Multipurpose Hall recently.

Games such Chess, Math 24, Word Raffle, Scrabble pitted participants wits to see who can add faster, to see who will emerge victorious, with many parents in attendance finding their intellect challenged and some outsmarted by their young ones.

Residents in the Northern parts of Soshanguve recently barricaded roads with burning tyres and rocks in protest against the on-going electrical power outages that has been grabbing area for the past couple of days.

The outages affected parts of Atteridgeville, Laudium, Parktown, Wonderpark, Mayville, Sinoville, Atterberry, Rosslyn, Pretoria North and Soshanguve.

They looted goods from hardware’s, bottle stores and a number of shops owned by foreign nationals. They claimed that their food was getting spoiled as a result of

the power outage.

“We are aware that the power outage is as a result of fire at a Kwagga substation in Pretoria West on Tuesday night. But what surprises us is that power should has been restored long time ago now our food is getting spoiled because there is no electricity,” said one resident who did not want to be named for fear of reprisal.

Acting City of Tshwane Mayor, MMC of Utility Services Abel Tau said the outages was as a result of the medium switch gear failure at the substation.

“The switch gear panel failed due to voltage flashover in bars chamber. The faulted switch gear was initially cleaned and repaired but failed confirmatory test. Our technicians are working tirelessly to repair it,” said Tau.

he empowerment of young girls was top on the agenda as Childline in Region 1 housed at the Umvelinqangi Youth Centre in Winterveldt taught them self defense

and life skills during a three day event.

In culmination of World Aids Day and 16 Days of Activism, identified through their yearly programmes, adolescent teenagers affected directly or indirectly by gender based violence; HIV/AIDS , child rights, education, advocacy and counselling were offered psycho social support which is the core mandate of the organisation.

Childline Senior Social Worker Kgomotso Vuma said “Throughout the year we have been running programmes to empower young girls but our scope is not limited to girls only, we saw it befitting to run an event to empower girls who are society’s most vulnerable members.”

“Throughout out survey we identified

that girls were the most vulnerable. The first mandate Childline is to prevent the infection of HIV/AIDS, testing and offer psycho social support like counselling.”

The organisation also ran seminars to empower its staff on how to offer quality service to those in need of help

The main objective of the event was to conscientious the learners and the public in general about road safety, in order for them to avoid becoming statistics during this period. Also the donation of blood was emphasised to assist those in urgent need of it.

the game, KingSlash’s latest contribution to the music industry is an 8-track EP. With the buzz, the talent, the style and the swag to kill the game with his flows and artistic ability, the ‘Growing up in Maftown’ hit maker, has managed to stay relevant and is still looking to achieve more.

The talented rapper together with his manager Eric Lecweleng have also started a PR platform under their company; Classybunch Productions which helps musicians and other brands to launch their careers

ospel artist, child of God Nelisiwe Mabaso from Ebenezer Christian Fellowship in Winterveldt believes people are ordained by God to convey his message in different ways, some through music, preaching and power of prophecy.

Mabaso has just launched her 8 track traditional Gospel album titled Ngiyamethemba that everyone can enjoy and listen to over and over again.

The album is a manifestation that music often speaks louder than words that can heal the sick, soothe the spirit and open doors when they are closed.

“Despite all the difficulties and challenges if God has ordained you it shall come to pass. Simply because he is the one in who is in charge. If you are passionate about

something all I can say is never giveup on your dreams,” said Mabaso.

The born-again-Christian started singing at God’s Kingdom Christian Church as part of the praise and worship team. She believes that is at church where her singing talent blossomed.

he high-flying JDR Stars who have been going through a slump in form have gone down 2-0 to Ajax Cape Town during their GladAfrica Championship’s showdown at Athone Stadium in Cape Town recently.

he crowd at the HSBC Cape Town Sevens will experience the skill and abilities of the best women’s teams for the first time on Friday, but they will also will be able to see their own Springbok Women’s Sevens team in action over the three days.

The Imbokodo, as they are nicknamed, have been hard at work at their base in Stellenbosch over the last couple of months and backline player Eloise Webb believes that will benefit them when they face New Zealand, Russia and Fiji in pool play.

Webb, who has played in two HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series tournaments (nine matches) and represented her country at the Commonwealth Games and Rugby World Cup Sevens, has experienced the pace and tempo of the top tier and said they worked hard to be able to live with that.

“We prepared well,” said

Webb, who hails from East London and played provincial netball and cricket as well.

“The decision not to go and play in Dubai last weekend was a good one, as we don’t have a big squad and there was the risk of injuries. Everyone is healthy and ready to go.”

The players understand that they can ‘introduce’ themselves to South Africa when they play in front of their home crowd this weekend.

“We train just as hard as the men and put in the same hours, so in that regard it is rewarding to be able to play here. We are very excited,” said Webb, who attended previous HSBC Cape Town Sevens tournaments as a spectator and added she can’t wait to be on the field this time around.

“As a spectator, it was already something special to be here at this tournament, so I cannot wait to experience that vibe and energy coming from the crowd while actually playing. I know the other women in our squad feel the

same.”

Webb said the focus will be on executing their game plans: “We have some set plays that we worked on and I feel confident that we can get things going.

We are playing the best team in the world first up, so the challenge will be massive, but that is why athletes train as hard as they do, you want to be able to compete against the best.”

Notes: With 52 matches and 111 points, Zenay Jordaan is South Africa’s leading points’ scorer in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series and could extend her tally this weekend.

She is also the most experienced Imbokodo player of all time.
