Tshwane residents urged to save water

MAIN STORY “ANC will work hard to transform the lives of the people for the better” Modise ANC reaffirmed its popularity following an emphatic victory in the hotly contested Winterveldt Ward 19 bi-election. The party’s Tshwane Regional Secretary Eugene ‘Bonzo’Modise said the victory will ensure that the party continues in its quest to transform the society.

The election followed the untimely death of Councillor Ester Matumane who was shot dead outside her home earlier in the year.

ANC candidate, Enoch Fanafuthi Hlatshwayo registered a 63.88% while the claimed EFF 22% of the votes, while DA came in third with 8% of the tally.

Two months old Winterveldt born political party, Arusha Economic Coalition led by the former ruling party’s member Ali Mlazi also managed to get 5% of the

votes.

Modise called on the people to hold the party accountable; “As the REC of the African National Congress we wish to commit ourselves to working with the community of Ward 19 in ensuring that the lives of the people are transformed for the better and making sure that we account to the people who elected the ANC.” Delighted Hlatshwayo said he will place job creation, fixing street lights and sewer system on top of his agenda.

n an effort to restrict water-related interruptions, MMC of Utility Services Darryl Moss has urged the residents of Tshwane residents to use water sparingly this dry festive season.

Water meters in some areas have been restricted as reservoirs have reached critical levels. Moss said Rand Water is under severe pressure from their water sources.

Since the city obtains 70 percent of their water from the company, the supply is limited.

Rand Water started restricting all Tshwane meters to 20 percent in order to manage reservoir levels.

“Residents are again reminded not to falter but continue to heed the call of conserving water and making it a norm,” said Moss.

This as an earnest request has been made to residents in Soshanguve, Mabopane, Ga-Rankuwa and Winterveldt areas in Region 1 to use water sparingly to avoid interruptions.”

the scourge of gender-based violence not to be observed only during the 16 days assigned for activism but should be part of our lives daily throughout the year.

Morudu was speaking during an event organised by Rietgat Police Station in partnership with CocaCola Beverage South Africa to commemorate the 16 days of Activism against Women and Children Abuse at Batho Plaza recently.

The 46 year old mother of three was raped by her husband while doing Grade 11 in 1989.

“I have been abused physically, emotionally, sexually and economically by my husband who had a drinking problem.

Over the weekends he would come back home in the early hours of the morning and start beating the hell out of me and our children.As a result of the abuse I suffered lot of trauma and depression.

“I would close myself inside the house and not socialise or look into people’s

eyes and always living in fear. During that time I would listened Soshanguve FM and were I heard of an office at Rietgat Police Station that offer support to the victims of abuse.

She said she referred for mediation by Sergeant Ntombizodwa Maphanga, she was given time to talk, cry and heal.

Currently she is involved with an organisation that assists victims of genderbased violence at the Soshanguve Police Station providing counselling, motivating victims of abuse and families experiencing difficulties.

She said the perpetuators of gender based violence are often people who are the closest to the victims.

“My husband is the sweetest, sweetest, sweetest and most handsome person ever.

If I was to stand next to him you would say am lying if I say was abusing us. But the problem would starts when he would drink.

He cleans the house, cooks for us but when he gets drunk he is another thing.

Through the help I got, I now a stronger woman and have forgiven the father of my children and can face any situation.

I tell those who are going through the same difficulties that the challenges they are facing do not mean it is the end of the road but there is light at the end of the tunnel no matter how hard and difficult it can be,” said Setlhodi.

Speak during the event Maphanga encouraged victims of gender based violence to speak out against abuse; “Seek help if you are emotionally, physically, or sexually abused. Talk to friends, relatives and colleagues who care about you.

City to fund drug NPO’s

W

ith every community within the City of Tshwane feeling the negative impact attributed to drug abuse, the city has announced that Non Profit Organisations (NPOs) which specialize in programmes to address the scourge of drug abuse will, from February 2019, be given an opportunity to apply for grants.

The Drug and Substance Abuse (DSA) grant funding for the 2018/19 financial year will be advertised in the media from 1 February 2019.

NPOs which are planning to apply for DSA grants will have to meet certain minimum requirements which will be clearly indicated in the advertisement that will appear in the media. Apart from the fact that only fully registered NPO’s can apply, the successful candidates must also have a proven track record of at least two years of conducting specialized and out-

come based drug programmes.

They also need to be in possession of a DSA certificate which is issued by the provincial Department of Social Development.

In the past year much has been said about the City of Tshwane’s DSA programme. Various experts have independently hailed the drug and substance programme in the City as a very innovative initiative that should serve as an example for other metropolitan municipalities in South Africa.

According to the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Health, Councillor Sakkie du Plooy, the City needs the communities’ support in order to win the battle against drugs.

Du Plooy said; “It is within these communities that the various NPOs which are doing excellent work and deserve the financial assistance of the Tshwane metro. As a responsible administration, the City will ensure that this assistance

to NPOs culminates in “value for money” and will not open up opportunities for corruption and wasteful expenditure. It is also imperative for the City to build-in checks and balances to guarantee that the right NPO’s get funding for the right programmes.”

Another crucial aspect is a detailed action plan that specifies clearly what is going to be done, for who, when it is going to happen as well as where the activities are going to take place. A realistic comprehensive costing of the plan in addition to an indication of how the outcomes of the action steps will be measured must be included.

“The 2018/19 advert will strictly be requesting applications per thematic areas (demand reduction, harm reduction, & supply reduction) of the National Drug Master plan.

Anything on the borderlines or outside the thematic areas will not be funded.

Metered Taxi group faces internal challenges

By Tshepo Marutha A thick cloud of controversy continue to hang over the head of the controversial leader of Gauteng Metered Taxi Concerned Group (GMTCG) Mang-mang Nkadimeng, this as members of organisation continues to cast aspersion over his presidency.

Nkadimeng has led from the front the group’s fight against Uber and Taxify, accusing the Apps companies of killing the metered taxi’sbusiness.

This, as he finds himself facing slew of accusation with members of the organisation accusing him of corruption, money laundering and racketeering, questioning how he became the organisation’s president.

In an interview with Tshwane Bulletin three members of GMTCG who did not want to be named for fear of reprisal, questioned how Nkadimeng could lead the GMTCG as ‘he

does not have a single metered taxi or a drivers licence.’

“As metered taxi operators we cannot be led by someone who does not have a single metered taxi or a drivers licence. We want a proper structure that will deal with our challenges and concerns as meter taxis operators.We do not understand why we have to pay for affiliation form that belongs to a mini buses association that has links to GMTCG members.

“We are not sure if we should have been made to pay the R 250 for both affiliation form and membership cards. As we have not been issues with the receipt upon payments of the money.

What worries us the most is that Nkadimeng no longer allows GMTCG members who have not yet joined his preferred association from attending the group’s meetings.

Efforts to get comment from Nkadimeng drew blanks as his phone rang unanswered.

Soshanguve Pastor jailed for raping boys “I reported the abuse to the church but no one believed me” -Victim

By Tshepo Marutha A popular Soshanguve pastor recently appeared before the local magistrate court on two counts of rape and one of sexual assault.

It is alleged that the 30-year-old pastor, sexually abused a group of boys who were themselves

trained as pastors at Hands of God International Ministries.

One of the victim said the abuse started when he was 16 years old in 2015 while he staying at the church; “One night he woke me up and told me to come to his bedroom. He told me I was the chosen one by God to be his protector. He then anointed

himself with oil and started kissing me then raped me.

He said he was scared to tell his parents of his ordeal as they were members of the church and loved the pastor very much.

Another boy who has since the started taking drugs to deal with the trauma said he reported the abuse to church in 2014 but no

one believed him.

“I remember the pain I felt when he first raped me, I could not even sit for three days but I kept quiet because he made me believe he was imparting supernatural powers to me as a servant of God.This has broken me and the past four years have been hell seeing him pass by my

house after leaving the church,” he said.

The third victim said the pastor demanded him to perform blow jobs on him every night.The case has been postponed to January 25 for further investigations.

Maimela’s salt work captivate art lovers

A

33 year old, self – taught Winterveldtvisual artist Percy Maimela has enthralled arts lovers with his exhibition themed ‘Salt Art Of The Earth’ at the South African State Theatre recently.

Maimela discovered his salt art technique while working as a merchandiser for a retail store.

He quit his Job in 2015 to pursue art as a full-time profession.

“Salt Art Of The Earth exhibition is about realising the power of reinventing one’s self and finding a way to be productive by using resources that has always been around us. Mother Nature gave birth to opportuni-

ties some of them are left behind in means of self-discovery like the journey of the rose growing in a concrete. The reason why I use salt is to show that we can give meaning to something that was meant for only one purpose,” said Maimela.

His work draws inspiration from the day to day issues surrounding his community and has received a lot of interest and demand from both the public and the private sector.

A salt company, Marine Sea Salt, based in Port Elizabeth recently spotted his work on the internet and is in the process to make him its brand ambassador to shine light on salt products.

This year he was introduced to conceptual art and launched a new body of work (Ancestors’ Mask/waBadimo) at the Turbine

Art Fair through MOCA gallery were his work was well received.

“The Ancestors’ Mask/wa Badimo concept aims to capture the narrative beyond being just one individual and having been one’s self because of the others.

I believe that one person’s story is about more than just one person. Hence I am driven to uplift people’s spirit through art,” said Maimela.

The exhibition was presented under the Incubator Programme, funded by the Department of Arts and Culture. The programme is designed to accelerate the successful transition of semi- professional entrepreneurial artists through an array of business, technical and artistic mentorship.

New York rising star winner in concert

The sky is the limit and there is no substitution for hardwork as the saying goes, as evident by the rise the multi-talented musician, actress and dancer, Lethabo Mofomme, as she was hosted by the the Rockwood, Musiekskuur Theatre, at the Parkview Shopping Centre, Moreletapark recently, Having studied at the New York Film Academy, she treated the audience to amazing musical theatre performances and paid tribute to some of the greatest music legends of all times!

In 2016, she was cast as “The Narrator” in University of Pretoria Youth Choir’s original production of Naledi: an African Journey, which was performed both at State Theatre in Pretoria and the Choralies Festival, in

Vaison-la-Romaine, France.

While in New York, Lethabo was cast in multiple productions in which she trained and worked with various film & Broadway celebrities and veterans.

She also acted as Kaya, the main character in a New York Film Academy film production called “Kaya -Taste of Paradise” alongside wellknown Broadway and TV actor Okieriete Onaodowan. She also performed in several Broadway musicals which includes “Nine” as Lillian la Fleur.

Earlier this year, she won the New York Rising Star competition in New York and had also won the Crawford’s Got Talent music competition. One of her former teachers describes her as “not just a musician with stage presence but a performer who has an extra-ordinary ability to entertain”.

TUT Ladies crowned 2018 Sasol League National Champions

UT Ladies were crowned 2018 Sasol League National Champions for the first time ever in the final on Sunday, 9 December 2018, when they beat Durban Ladies 4-0.

Goals from Koketso Tlailane in the 32nd minute, Hildah Magaia in the 37th minute and a brace from Letago Madiba in the 77th and 88th minute gave TUT the win.

TUT Ladies made their inten-

tions clear from the opening day when they beat Thunderbirds 2-0 and Golden Ladies 2-1 in the second match to qualify for the semi finals with 6 points, where they beat First Touch Academy 1-0.

Durban Ladies walked away as silver medallist for the first time in their 10 years of participating in the Sasol League.

The University of the Western Cape gave an impressive performance to walk away with the bronze medal, after beating First

Touch Academy 4-3 on penalties, after a goalless draw.

The 2018 Sasol League National Champions, TUT Ladies walked away with R200 000; while silver medallists Durban Ladies received R100 000. The University of the Western Cape collected the bronze medal and R60 000.

Fourth placed First Touch Academy walked away with R40 000, while fifth placed Bloemfontein Celtic received R30 000 Sixth placed Thunderbirds bagged R25 000 with Coal City

Wizards walking away with R20 000. Golden Ladies came in eighth place and received R15 000; while the last placed team Richmond United earned themselves R10 000.

The following received individual awards with players only getting prize money of R5000 each.

Amajita progress to COSAFA Cup final

outh Africa’s National Under-20 (Amajita) progressed to this year’s COSAFA Under-20 Championship final after beating Angola 1-0 in the semi finals at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe, Zambia.

A goal by Lyle Foster in the first period of the match was enough to see the defending champions edge an Angolan side who came into this tie with the intent to win.

Amajita will now face either hosts Zambia or Zimbabwe on Thursday at 15h30.

In the first period of the match, Amajita showed great enthusiasm pressing forward while maintaining their shape from the back pressing forward. Foster’s goal came in the 26th minute when he received a deep

superb pass from midfield maestro, and eventual man of the match Nkosingiphile Ngcobo.

Foster simply evaded his marker before shooting past the opposition’s goalkeeper to give Amajita the needed lead. In the second period of the match, Amajita opted to play defensively to deny an Angolan side who threw everything their way in pursuit of a comeback.

The defending champions denied them every scoring opportunity, while also pressing forward and creating opportunities of their own to increase their lead.

This win also means that Amajita have gone three matches in this COSAFA tournament without conceding a single goal or defeat.
