Rietgat SAPS holds imbizo with"JUKULYN" community

T

he Rietgat SAPS under the leadership of Brigadier Ramakamakama Kekana together with the Community Policing Forum led by Mr Molefe Tau held an Imbizo with the community of Block P, Y, MM, R, X, T and V. The Imbizo was held at Thakgalang Junior Secondary School in Block P. Kekana kickstarted the meeting by giving a crime overview and shed light on thorny issue such as contact, property related crimes and those depended on police actions amongst others.

He further implored the community to go back to the basics of parenting to discipline their children while discouraging them to do crime. The police gave community members a platform to voice out their concerns while coming up with solutions to curb crime.

Various speakers unanimously agreed that the police are not pulling weight as much as they should. They also claim that the police are laxed and corrupt and needs to redeem themselves and apologize to the community for disservice.

The community went further and vowed to work collectively and do an introspection through blowing whistles, disciplining their children and discouraging the buying of stolen goods.

our people had to be rushed to Steve Biko Academic Hospital after a block of buildings were allegedly set alight by taxi drivers during protest actions into the killing of a taxi driver, Jabu Baloyi in the Pretoria Central Business District recently.

Corner Brown and Van Der Walt Street before the name change, became the casualty as firefighters put out the blaze, after being in the centre of the tragedy subsequent to being identified as a drug hotspot.

As smoke permeated in the air, traffic came to a stand still, as road were blockaded by city buses and trucks, leaving commuters stranded as businesses shut their doors to avoid becoming victims to sporadic looting which became the order of the day.

Police reinforcement had to be called to calm the situation, City of Tshwane MMC for Roads

and Transport Sheila Senkubuge condemned the unwarranted use of the city’s buses by protesters to blockade the metropolis roads.

“As a city we foremost had to put the safety of our commuters and drivers first hence the decision to recall all our buses until everything calms down, we condemn the use of our buses to blockade our roads irrespective of the situation.’

Emergency Services Head of Communication Charles Mabaso said; “We managed to extinguish the fire using two firefighting trucks and four people were rushed to hospital after sustaining minor injuries. For now we cannot estimate the cost of the damages as the properties are privately owned.”

Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner Elias Mawela said; “No arrests have been made re-

garding the arson; we have mobilized additional members as certain individuals are taking advantage of the situation to their benefit. We will understand the situation but acts of criminality will not be tolerated. We are busy gathering intelligence in order to understand where everything is emanating from.”

City of Tshwane MMC For Community Safety Karen Meyer said; “The damage to our infrastructure is minimal, the buildings that were set alight are privately owned, this protest march has nothing to do with the city but we understand what is happening. Looting and total disregard for people properties on the other hand will not be tolerated hence our joint operation with the South African Police Service.”

shwane residents felt the impact of the four-day municipal worker’s unprotected strike which left many unable to pay rates, lodge complaints of water leaks as well as power outages amongst others.

At Ga-Rankuwa View, Phase 4, a motorist hit the electricity pole in the early hours of the morning, leaving some parts of the area without lights.

The following day, Eskom technicians came and attended to the matter. But the woes of the community continued when Eskom personnel ruptured the main water pipe during the installation of a new electricity pole.

The frustrated resident, Lesego Khumalo said; “These guys are not serious. They came to fix electricity but made things worse for us. We were left electricity but with no water .”

Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane, Stevens Mokgalapa condemned the unlawful protest

action organised by members of South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) and its allies.

“This is an unlawful activity, which should be condemned in the strongest terms. The current disruption which has brought the city’s services to an abrupt halt is opportunistic and undermines its stability.

“It is concerning that flagrant violation of law and order has overshadowed sincere efforts by the City to resolve the impasse over the demand for an 18% increase. The individuals behind the chaos have the right to protest and express themselves freely. However, this should not undermine service delivery, neither should it come at the expense of residents of Tshwane suffering as a result,” said Mokgalapa.

After four days of striking over pay disparities in the municipality, the City of Tshwane reached an agreement with SAMWU, Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (IMATU).

Province to adopt Rietgat’s meticulous filing system

T

he South African Police Services Gauteng Provincial Inspection team after visiting the Rietgat Police station has vowed to duplicate the stations meticulous and impeccable style of filing and archiving dockets, and duplicate it at other police stations courtesy of Mr. Simon Talamo Moiloa.

Moila has 28 years of service, after he

joined the South African Police Service (SAPS) back in 1991 as a Cleaner. He started working at the SAPS Tshwane Academy in Pretoria West where many men and women in blue start their police careers as trainees.

In 2004, Moila took a transfer to the Soshanguve Police Station where he assumed his duties as a Docket Store Manager, an area where the administrative reputation of the SAPS can either be rendered good or tarnished.

At the time, Mr Moila had no matric but he propelled himself

to further his educational journey in 2008, where he obtained his matric certificate at the Rietgat Police Station at the age of 40.

The intrepid and outspoken Moila lives by the mantra, “Do not underestimate yourself, but keep working hard.”

His passion for his work was recently given thumbs up by the Provincial Inspection team, which visited the station recently.

The team was impressed and amazed with Moila’s meticulous and impeccable style of filing and archiving dockets, they even vowed to copy his best practice and duplicate it at other police stations.

He highlighted that his 28 years of service from the then ‘police force’ to the current police service, has changed his life tremendously from being nobody to somebody.

He encouraged the younger generation in the SAPS to toughen up and grab all the opportunities that come their way.

Moila said “The best part of my job is seeing proper management and safekeeping of public records in custody of the SAPS. This includes easy access and retrieval of dockets when required by colleagues. I get joy in preserving the condition of all records in the storage areas for future availability.”

Sexual predators new methods exposed

By Letlhogonolo Mosete Sodomy, insertion of objects into private parts, oral sex coercion and thigh sex are some of the new alarming methods used by sexual predators to violate their victims, thus deviating from the normal vaginal penetration to conceal their criminal acts.

That frightening statement was made by Loate Police Station Social Worker Rose Mosombuka, during a Women Empowerment Seminar hosted

by Family Opposing Women and Children Abuse a Non Profit Organisation at Winterveldt Hall recently.

Masombuka issued a stern warning to parents to be vigilant and monitor their kids behavioral changes as the Modus Operandi of sexual abusers are changing in order for them to avoid getting caught “Sexual Perpetrators are getting smarter and no longer use penetration as the only way to violate their victims, sodomy, insertion of fingers, objects and thigh sex are some of the emerging trends used to go undetected as parents sometimes look for vaginal penetration. In some cases parents thought their kids had worms, only to find that their child has been sodomised,” said Masombuka.

Masombuka educating parents said “Rape is not gender discriminatory it can happen to anyone. We have cases whereby it happens in the house and parents want to keep quiet by not reporting the crime believing it

is an internal matter that can be amicably resolved at the expense of the victim. Any form of sexual misconduct, violation no matter how little you think it is needs to be reported.”

Mercy House Social Worker Mary Mmushi said; “The high unemployment rate is making people susceptible to being trafficked as perpetrators capitalized on their desperation for employment. Social media, fake job advertisements are some of the ways used to lure unsuspecting would be victims.”

“We have four girls at our centre who were recently rescued after being made to believe they would be getting high paying jobs only to be forced to work as prostitutes.

Parents must cultivate an environment in which their children sharing information with them, so that they can share inform them about their whereabouts. Also they must be careful of fake job advertisements and do research before making any moves on it,” said Mmushi.

ith the Department of Social Development having received R50 million, from the Criminal Assets Recovery Account to strengthen civil society organisations working in the empowerment field, one young lady hopes might turn into reality if the funds trickle down to their intended recipients.

The 26 year-old Palesa Kgotse from Lebanon in Mabopane who is the Director of Family Opposing Women and Children a non profit organisation that recently hosted its 2nd annual Women Empowerment Seminar at the Winterveldt Multipurpose Hall.

Having heard the harrowing stories being retold by her mother, who is a member of the South African Police Service about abuse being endured by women and children, she decided to take a hard stance and start an organisation to empower women and children in her community.

She harbors a dream of opening a centre for abused women and children that will give them the necessary skills to be self reliant and the skills to recognize abuse of any form.

Passionate and determined about social cause Kgotse said; “My mother inspired me to start the organisation, because she was telling me about harrowing acts of abuse inflicted on women and children and we decided to act in order to lend a helping hand. The

“The scope of our work will not only be limited to women and children but also we also want to engage with the

The 97 year-old Elizabeth Kekana who has been living in a shack for more than two decades was the recipient of a brand new house.

Proud homeowner Kekana said ;“I can now sleep peacefully, I

never thought I will see a day where I will get out of that shack.

I am so grateful for all the people who came forward to help, particularly AfriBiz and Collen Mashawana Foundation.”

Sharing the reason why he is so passionate about providing decent shelter to people, Executive Chairman and partner of Afribiz Invest (Pty) Ltd, Collen Mashawana said “I pray for a South Africa where there would be no child who sleeps in the dark due

to lack of electricity. A Mzansi where every child has access to clean water and sanitation. A country where, every elderly citizen would have a roof over their heads, and not live in dilapidated shacks.”

“After meeting with the community and checking the condition of the house, we were able to intervene. We have now completed the house and installed electricity, running water and we have also given her furniture and

a-Rankuwa based non-profit organisation, Hope for the Hopeless hosted an ‘anti-substance abuse’ awareness campaign at Ga-Rankuwa City Shopping Complex recently.

Held under the theme; ‘Love me, Support me, I need Help. #KeLapileKaDiDrugs’, the purpose of the event was to ensure that the youth of Ga-Rankuwa and surrounding areas get information about drug usage. The day served as a platform for like-minded folks, to discuss and come up with solutions to tackle this pandemic. It also offered aid to the community at large in stopping this common enemy called ‘drugs’ particularly ‘Nyaope’; the drug that has plagued

Founder of Hope for the Hopeless Maggie Kekana called on everyone to set example and make change in their communities by helping those involved in drugs. “We have to join hands as the public to promote, create awareness for a drug free society and by imparting our knowledge to ensure that everyone knows what drugs are doing to our brothers and sisters,” she said.

“Sometimes, we visit schools as well as churches to educate the community and create dialogue amongst the youth on how to approach the service users. We hope to reach more people through these campaigns.

And lastly, we urge communities to support them,” said Kekana.

One of the ex-Nyaope addicts who refused to be named said substance abuse affects everyone in the community. “We

have people who go back and forth to rehabilitation centres simply because of limited information and having nothing to do after being rehabilitated. We have to empower them by putting them in skills development centres so they can do something with their lives,” he added.

By Letlhogonolo Mosete editorial@tshwanebulletin.co.za The City of Tshwane’s first Joint Steering Committee (JSC) meeting with stakeholders in the taxi industry and law enforcement agencies took place recently.

The JSC is comprised of representatives from the City of Tshwane, including the MMCs for Roads and Transport Sheila Senkubugeand Community Safety and Emergency Services MMC Karen Meyer, SANTACO, the NTA, TMPD, SAPS and taxi operators.

The purpose of the JSC is to ensure collaborative efforts between the taxi industry, law enforcement and the City of Tshwane in addressing various concerns and effecting the restoration of order across the City. The JSC is also a platform for disseminating information to combat crime at hotspots in and around the City.

One of the issue on the agenda included feedback regarding the death of taxi driver Jabu Baloyi. The SAPS agreed that the investigations and related matters will be dealt with swiftly. The matter has also been escalated to the IPID. The meeting further resolved that a more concerted and coordinated effort between TMPD and SAPS will be undertaken to combat crime in the City.

The TMPD will assist the SAPS in its antidrug crime action.

It was also suggested that the TMPD and SAPS create a visible platform on social media to communicate successes such as drug busts and other crime fighting activities more readily, to address community members’ concerns and allay fears about crime spiralling further out of control and inaction by law enforcement agencies.

Stakeholders within the JSC also identified individuals who will ensure effective and efficient communication on relevant issues and matters arising.

he Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Public Works and Infrastructure Chairperson Honourable Nolitha Ntobongwana said she was impressed with the direction the South African built industry was gravitating towards.

This comes after the committee continued its oversight visit to the Eric Molobi Innovation Hub, Soshanguve Block XX, to inspect housing projects which were built using innovative and cost saving measures The purpose of the visit is to provide in depth understanding of the Department’s entities and ensure that members of Parliament get first- hand knowledge of how the entities are governed, administered, and what the current operational status of the entity. Amongst the entity’s mandate is to conduct testing and certification of innovative building material and systems.

The Parliamentarians engaged representatives of the boards and the senior management of each entity on key matters such as challenges emerging from their strategic plans, their previously tabled annual reports and audit opinions of the office of the auditor general on their financial statements.

“As the Portfolio Committee of Public Works and Infrastructure, you understand one of our mandates is to do the monitoring and oversight over the department and its entities, recently we were at Agremen’t SA, one of the non -standardised certifying bodies other than SABS the one we know. auteng Province topped the list as the most corrupt province in the country; this is according to Corruption Watch’s 2018 report, {Upholding Democracy} with 45% of all cases recorded in the province, signalling the role of civil society and members of the public alike in exposing corruption and holding leaders to account during 2018.

The largest number of reports received (22%) focused on corruption in the education sector, while complaints about the South African Police Service increased from 6% in 2017 to 9% in

2018, reaching their highest level over the seven-year period. Third on the list are reports of corruption and illegal activities at licensing centres throughout the country.

The many voices reflected in this year’s edition, which marks 25 years of freedom and democracy in South Africa, point to the impact of corruption on the lives of ordinary people, who suffer the most as it strips them of human dignity and access to basic human rights. At a broader level, the report underlines how corruption erodes the pillars of our democracy, taking hold of key institutions of accountability that should exercise oversight of our leaders, and gives rise to the kinds of abuse of power and impunity that we have witnessed as a result.Corruption Watch’s executive director David Lewis, in his focus on the need to support the institutions that

protect our democracy, comments on how such key institutions – for example, Parliament and the National Prosecuting Authority – were compromised to sustain the corruption on the scale evident in the era of state capture. “On the other hand,” he adds, “we saw how other institutions of our democracy led the fight back against state capture. Robust and independent civil society, media and judiciary are key indicators of a functioning democracy and in our country, these are widely acknowledged for their leading role in confronting state capture.”

The trending corruption issues reported by the public over the year were abuse of power, bribery and procurement corruption, while the majority of the 4 200 corruption reports received in 2018 related to provincial government departments, followed by national departments and local government in third place. After 2017 and 2016, this is the third highest number of reports received since Corruption Watch’s launch in 2012.

These three years account for 57% of the overall number of reports received between 2012 and 2018, and coincide with the rollout of several advocacy campaigns and high-level litigation cases.

As in previous years, Gauteng recorded the most reports of corruption with 45% of all cases received during 2018, followed by KwaZulu-Natal.

This, we believe, is largely explained by the relatively large population of Gauteng, the scale of economic activity and the fact that national government administration is headquartered in the province. For the first time, Limpopo made the top three with 8% of reports, most likely a result of Corruption Watch’s public awareness drive in the province in late 2017. This report also provides a platform for a variety of young voices to share their opinions

and expectations about the meaning of democracy, just 25 years old in our country. One reflects on her own vulnerability as a young woman living in South Africa; another reviews how the effective functioning of key institutions is dependent on individuals and entities to ensure that they fulfil their mandate. A third writer views the past 25 years as a period during which lines had to be drawn between the injustices of the past and a new commitment to justice, fairness and equality in our highly unequal society.

During its public engagements the Corruption Watch team heard first-hand accounts of people who have suffered the effects of corruption in a variety of ways. These included abuse at the hands of the police in communities in the Western Cape, the failure of mining companies and authorities to honour the mineral rights of people living in mining towns in the North West, and the dire consequences of corruption in the Gauteng Department of Health for those requiring public health services.

Corruption Watch’s other interventions over the year include strategic litigation, much of it focused on holding accountable perpetrators of corruption and maladministration.

Among these is the application lodged by the organisation in November 2018 to have five former board members of Eskom declared delinquent following their dismal performance and lack of proper oversight of the parastatal during their tenure. The legal and investigations team has also contributed to policy and legislative matters, in particular submissions on the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Bill, which relate to the way in which community consultation on royalties and mining applications has been impeded by traditional leaders and traditional structures, and the under-representation of community interests.

ity of Tshwane has distanced itself from a social media group scam encouraging residents to join the Tshwane Electricity WhatsApp

group.

This group was seemingly created to assist residents with financial aid regarding their City of Tshwane accounts that are in arrears. The group can also be used to raise issues and rate the services of the City’s Energy and Electricity Division. The perpetrators demand 10% of the total outstanding amount for accounts that are more than R50 000,00 in arears.

It further requests a minimum of R5 000,00 for lower amounts upon submission of the application for financial assistance. Proof of payment must then be emailed to tshwane@ electricity.org.za or submitted through WhatsApp number 072 157 8811 together with the latest water and lights accounts.

The City of Tshwane wants to emphasise that the only email accounts used by its customer care centres to interact with customers on matters related to service delivery and municipal accounts are customers@ tshwane.gov.za and creditcontrol@ tshwane.gov.za. The City does not use a WhatsApp group.

The City distances itself from the fraudulent WhatsApp group and email account, because these are not official City of Tshwane communication platforms. Moreover, all payment arrangements for municipal accounts that are in arrears must be done in person at any customer care walk-in centre. No payment arrangements can be made online.

We urge the public to be vigilant when dealing with such matters. The City is appalled at scammers who prey on the emotions of unsuspecting community members by manufacturing information about the existence of aid on municipal accounts that are in arrears.

We wish to warn those who peddle such false information that they will be arrested, charged and prosecuted because their actions border on criminality.

Further, we request the public to report to the City’s Anti-fraud Hotline number (080 874 9263) or to send an email to moeketsint@tshwane.gov.za whenever they come across such adverts that are issued outside the City’s processes and procedures. .

assion, dedication, customer satisfaction infused with the love for beauty are some of the words used by Glam Beauty Bar Owner Nonhlanhla Mkhwanazi to describe why she got into the beauty industry.

Harnessing the power of social media and word of mouth to promote her Mabopane Station based business, the 30 year –old Nail Technician and Makeup Artist is growing her customer base with her artistic flair Residing from Block GG in Soshanguve, she says from an early age she always loved beautiful things, her mom being her inspiration. Even at school she loved doing make-up and arts. After being mentored by her cousin Nomsa for five months, she

finally had the courage to spread her wings and rented a spot at a salon in Hammanskraal.

Motherhood followed suit and she had to embrace the blessing and put her passion in the back, in 2014 she was appointed as a Nail Technician at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research but the confines of that were not suited for.

Relaying her story Mkhwanazi said “Before I rented a space in Mabopane I was doing house calls

and consulting at home but I needed growth hence the move, I love beauty and I am passionate about my work, I want a customer to walk-out with a happy feeling inside.”

“I watch Youtube videos to keep abreast of the latest nail and beauty trends and also visit other technician to learn about their techniques. The dream is to have a bigger space and offer more beauty services. I also want to open more shops in different locations,” said Mkhwanazi

OVA production written and directed

by Joseph Komani -Winner of the 2019 Standard Bank Gold Ovation Award- will show at the South African State Theatre from 11 to 29 September 2019. Xova’s season at the State Theatre (Africa’s biggest theatre complex) follows its competitive campaign at the National Arts Festival in July, where it won gold to top the fringe programme which featured over five hundred works in various disciplines.

Produced by the State Theatre in association with the Ozone Fellas, the performance art piece examines father absenteeism in the upbringing of children to highlight the brunt women carry in solo parenting. XOVA, “Ukuxova,” a Xhosa word denoting the mixing of dough for baking, it’s a metaphor used as the process of raising a child.

The show employs movement with some text in Xhosa through its narration. It features an allwomen cast led by household names, Charmaine Mtinta and Zimkhitha Nyoka.

Komani and the production progressed with speed through State Theatre’s development programmes. In June 2017, the production debuted at the theatre’s Youth Expressions festival. Komani was then selected into the 2017/2018 Incubator Programme which equips semi-professional artists with training that prepares them for the mainstream industry. This year his production was listed amongst five works that were presented by the State Theatre in Makhanda’s NAF. “It has been a very tough journey,” says Komani. “To tell a universal story with an African language such as Xhosa without using any projection of interpretation and have different audiences (White and black) understanding the story, that has been a highlight for me.”

Komani was born in 1990 in East London (Mdantsani), Eastern Cape. His love for theatre started in 2007 when he enrolled at a drama school called Moonyth Drama House. In 2009 he wrote his first one-man show titled The Interpretation inspired by Gerard Sekoto. The show performed under the State Theatre’s Mzansi Fela festival.

His writing and directing grew tremendously to have him co-write a play called TWISTED with the renowned Mpumeleo Paul Grootboom. To date, he never looked back.

The show will preview on 11 and 12 September ahead of the grand opening night on Friday, the 13th. Ticket Prices for XOVA range from R100 to R120 at Webtickets- online and over the counter at Pick n Pay stores nationwide.

Soshanguve Block GG born fashion designer Yvonne Mahlangu is mixing business with pleasure, the creative behind Lynn Intimate, a nightwear range which caters for both female and males, all shapes and sizes together with her partner Amoslyn Mahutjo, host Sex education parties for their clients to promote their brand.

The pair also double as Intimacy Coaches for their clientele and have talks on sexual

matters on radio.

Killing two birds with one stone, the self taught- designers also co-owns Flats Shoes Mogul a women’s only fashion design label, having started doing mobile pop-ups to showcase their designs, they came with a novel idea to host sex education and pyjama parties to compliment their range at the same time educating their clients about matters of the bedroom “The dream for us is to open our boutique to house our clothes and see our brands growing from strength to strength. We host bachelorette parties where we empower women to embrace their femininity and sexuality. We bring and an assortment of toys to spice things up.” Said Mahlangu.

we use a social media to market our clothes and brand and so far it has been good to us. We sell confidence to our customers and both brands compliment each other. We want women to feel confident from the bedroom to the bedroom. Some of the challenges we faced was gaining entry into already saturated industry but we cut a niche for ourselves.”

non-governmental organisation, Thusong Care and Support Centre held a campaign which aims to promote information on HIV, bullying as well as drug and substance abuse among young people in Ga-Rankuwa View recently.

It is said that “South Africa’s HIV/AIDS epidemic, which is among the most severe in the world, is concentrated in its townships. And the purpose of the campaign was to educate youth and reduce stigma towards people living with TB, and HIV/ AIDS. Project manager Dineo Moagi said the day was educational. “Our peer educators and student psychologists were able to teach youth about various topics such as; Teenage pregnancy, sexual abuse, sexually transmitted illnesses, condom demonstration and career guidance,” said Moagi.

She said: “There was a Question and Answer session. And we realised that some of our school children are well-informed. They were interested in our topics and participated. We also gave them informative pamphlets to read.”

Care Worker, Tumelo Matlou said most the youth are negligent when it comes to sexual intercourse. “We urge our youth to visit clinics, and use protection at all times,” said Matlou.

The information filled day was part of commemorating Women's Month under the banner, "Crime Prevention Awareness#Crime Prevention Is Our Responsibility."

The day also saw the local youth and kindergarten children performing to the cheering audience who appreciated the collaborative effort by all stakeholders who made the event possible.

egion 1 Ladies were crowned as the Ladies Netball League Top Four winners at the Block K Tennis Courts in Soshanguve after they walloped Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University’s team (SMU) 13-1 recently.

The first game saw the two teams going head to head with Region 1, demolishing SMU 20-8, Nissan Ladies were pitted against Odi Stars Ladies with Nissan emerging victorious with a 13-9 win margin.

SMU bounced back and ran circles around the Odi Stars Ladies who had run out of steam and had no reply to the 28 goals scored. Then Region 1 faced Nissan Ladies, Region 1 ladies were on a class of their own and trashed Nissan ladies 24-6 to proceed to the finals An administrative blunder led to the Nissan Ladies pulling out of the games thus pitting Region 1 and SMU in the finals. Region 1 Goal Attacker and Goal Shooter were not in a forgiving mood as they outclassed their opponents.

In the end they lifted the trophy and were crowned the champions.

Region 1 Captain Salome Mothlala said “We feel great

because we have put a lot of practice and preparation into these games. Once again as Region 1 netball team we have proven to be the best.’

Secretary of the League Noni Shabangu said “We are happy that the best team on the day won, all the team gave their best but we can have only one winner.

imphiwe Dludlu will resume her role as coach of the South African side at the inaugural COSAFA Under-17 Women’s Championship in Mauritius from September 20-29.

Former Banyana Banyana international Dludlu led the team to the FIFA Women’s Under-17 World Cup in Uruguay last year, their second appearance at the global showpiece event after the first in 2010.

On Women’s Day, the Zone 1 Western/Eastern grounds came alive as u.17 ladies football teams came to showcase their talents. The crowed was marvelled by the quality shown by the young girls when seven Ga-Rankuwa based teams competed for a trophy, medals and bragging rights in a mini seven-a-side tournament.

In the final, SMU Ladies football team beat Shooting Stars Ladies 3 – 1 to clinch the accolades. SMU coach Neo Maphutha was delighted by the performance of his team. “I am confident that this was the beginning of what these ladies can do,” said Maphutha.

the tournament. “We have some passionate ladies on our team who want to perform at the highest level. The team is focusing on playing at the University Sports South Africa (USSA) football tournament which is will commence in December,” said Nchabeleng.

Ga-Rankuwa Local Football Association (GALFA) General Secretary Given Mokoka said the association wanted to honour the young girls, show them how special they are and to enjoy the day with them.

He said: “We are in the process of establishing a Women’s Football League for the upcoming season. These are the measures in place to deal with issues of gender equality.

We feel that our girls should have the same exposure as their male counterparts. “The love for the beautiful game among these young girls is growing. And GALFA is here to nurture their talent as well as to empower them.”
