S
outh Africans were joined by the rest of the world in paying tribute to the fallen struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela who was laid to rest at Fourways Memorial Park recently. For many her life represented an unwavering commitment to
the values of freedom and justice. It was her dedication to the people of South Africa during the darkest days of Apartheid and her tenacity to create a society free from racial oppression that she was affectionately referred to as the “Mother of the Nation.”The struggle stalwart died at the age of 81, while surrounded by family members at the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg Her life represented a spirit that
was continuously revived, by the realities of a politics that oppressed her people. In the face of the oppressive apartheid regime, she was able to re-strategise, re-organise, and re-commit herself to a just politics that came from the heart. She was a woman of faith, who held the church in high regard and in her activism was involved with the church in fighting the despicable apartheid regime.
She was given a special official category 1 funeral and all days from her passing until 14 April were declared national days of mourning. A Special Official Funeral Category 1 entails elements of military ceremonial honours and is declared in extraordinary credentials, as designated by the President. A recipient of the Order of Luthuli in silver for her “excellent contribution to the fight for
the liberation of the people of South Africa” “Mam’ Winnie deserves the highest respect our nation can demonstrate in honour of a patriot and citizen who served our nation and humanity at large with distinction during our liberation struggle and throughout our democratic dispensation,” said President Ramaphosa.
