Trumbull County students set to compete in this year’s TCESC Prep Bowl competitions The Trumbull County Educational Center’s Annual Prep Bowl competition is set for three Saturdays — two in February and one in March — at Lordstown High School, 1824 Salt Springs Road.

The Elementary Prep Bowl, grades 5 and 6, is scheduled for Feb. 8. The Jr. High Prep Bowl, grades 7 and 8, will be Feb. 22. The High School Prep Bowl, grades 9-12, will be March 14.

Each event will start at 8 a.m., with a championship set expected to begin around 1:30p.m.

The elementary portion has expanded this year to include 21 Trumbull County teams – the highest number in recent years. Eighteen teams for the high school have signed on.

There are 17 Junior High teams set to participate.

Teams are made up of four students playing at once. However, dozens more who will serve as substitutes will also attend.

Prep Bowl is an academic competition that engages students in various grade levels in a contest to answer questions from all areas of study.

Michael Hanshaw We at the Trumbull County ESC are excited about our first Launching Into Literacy event set for Saturday, April 4 at the Eastwood Mall in Niles.

Made possible through the Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy Grant our staff secured two years ago, this event will provide an opportunity for preschool teachers, administrators and directors to receive training designed to enhance literacy outcomes starting with our youngest learners.

Launching Into Literacy will also serve as a day our community can come together to support Trumbull County families with Literacy, Language and Learning.

We encourage you to attend this event as we continue to work together to serve our Trumbull County public schools, students, staff and communities.

Certified Public Records Training set for April 7 at TCESC — The training is required for all elected officials.

— The Auditor of State offers classes around the state each year.

A state required public records training program will be offered at the Trumbull County ESC at 1 p.m. April 7, 2020.

Ohio Revised Code §109.43(B) and 149.43(E)(1) require officials elected to statewide or local office to receive three hours of public records training for each term of office.

The training is designed to enhance the elected officials’ knowledge of the duty to provide access to public records.

The training must be certified by the Ohio Attorney General. Proof that training has been completed must include documentation that either the Attorney General’s office or another entity certified by the Attorney General provided the training. It is expected that attendees who successfully complete the training will receive a certificate that will serve as proof of training. The Attorney General has a list of those entities that have been certified to provide this training.

The April 7, 2020, training program at the TCESC is in accordance with Ohio Revised Code 149.43(E)(1), which requires Public Records Law training for all elected officials and/or their appropriate designees. The program will examine in-depth the responsibilities of elected officials and public offices, along with a review of the rights of the public records requester. The Public Records Act, Open Meetings Act, and Records Retention laws will be discussed, including but not limited to: (1) New changes in the law; (2) Key definitions, exemptions, practical compliance with public records requests; and (3) The remedies and penalties that may be imposed upon a public office for failure to comply.

A certificate will be given at the completion of the training program to document compliance with training requirement.
