FROM TCESC SUPERINTENDENT It's truly incredible that we find ourselves immersed in the holiday season, taking a moment to reflect on the substantial accomplishments we've achieved personally and as a cohesive team dedicated to the well-being of our students, schools, staff, and communities.

I am proud to announce that we have successfully completed our structured literacy training with over 500 educators, meeting the state requirements of Ohio House Bill 436. Thank you to the 1,100 educators who made our Trumbull County Professional Development Day a great success in early November. I would also like to congratulate all 20 Under Twenty recipients on a job well done.

Spotlight

"I wanted to start a league where students with disabilities could have fun and accommodate their needs.” That sparked the idea for TCESC MD Intervention Specialist Trisha Betts to start the 'Pin Pals' bowling league at Cortland Lanes.

Betts is in her 16th year in education. She spent two years teaching in the Astoria School district in Astoria, Oregon, in a self-contained classroom for grades 3-6 before joining the TCESC. She teaches in the TCESC MD classrooms at Newton Falls Elementary/Middle School.

Her passion for starting the league grew while working at Cortland Lanes. 'I worked with the youth leagues and would see siblings and adults come in, wanting to join in on the fun. However, there are not many activities for students with disabilities in the area, especially during the school year,' Betts said.

Betts added that bowling is an easy transition for individuals with disabilities, allowing them to use bumpers, ball ramps, headphones, fidgets, and wheelchair ramps if needed, all within a fun and safe environment for both bowlers and parents/guardians.

'This is for bowlers from kindergarten-age children to adults. We started with ten bowlers in the first session, increased to 25 in the second, and finished with 32 bowlers in the third session,' Betts said. The program will resume in February 2024."

TRUMBULL COUNTY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY On November 7th, the Trumbull County Educational Service Center held the Trumbull County Professional Development Day, bringing together more than 1,100 educators. The day unfolded across multiple locations, including Warren Harding High School, Williad Elementary School, Lincoln Elementary School, The Grand Resort, and The Butler Art Museum in Youngstown.

MEET SOME KEY PRESENTERS FROM THE DAY Brad Hurtig

Hurtig delivered an inspiring message encapsulated by the mantra, "Find A Way." Hurting, a former studentathlete from a small town in Northwest Ohio, shared his poignant journey of resilience following a lifealtering accident that led to the amputation of both his hands just days after completing his sophomore year of high school.

OVER 50 PRESENTERS TOOK PART IN THE DAY Pam Kastner Pam Kastner, an educational consultant at Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network, was instrumental in advancing literacy efforts in Trumbull County and leading Pennsylvania's Dyslexia Screening and Early Literacy Intervention Pilot Program, highlighting her dedication to educational excellence.

Erin Merryn Merryn is a survivor of childhood sexual assault and now an author, speaker, child advocate, and activist. She is the founder and president of Erin's Law, a movement advocating for mandatory age-appropriate curricula in all public schools to educate students on reporting abuse.

THOSE WHO ARE INFLUENTIAL

Trumbull County art teachers had the opportunity to receive a tour of the Butler Art Museum and went through multiple sessions of different art forms to bring back to the classroom.

David Kohout With over 30 years of experience in leadership training and sales management, has impacted the lives of over 700,000 students, staff, and academic leaders through his company, Talk Is Cheap, Inc.

Jonathan Schulz A certified performance coach, CBT practitioner, and NLP master practitioner. He offers customized programming, workshops, and retreats to enhance personal development, leadership, and culture in schools, businesses, and sports organizations. He also coaches professional athletes, CEOs, and individuals seeking to achieve their full potential.

20 UNDER TWENTY Celebrating Success!

Congratulations to the 20 Trumbull County students named to the 2023 Class of Twenty Under 20! Co-sponsored by the Tribune Chronicle, Akron Children's Hospital Mahoning Valley, and Kent State University at Trumbull, the program honors individuals younger than 20 for their leadership skills through volunteerism, extracurricular activities, and academic achievements.

Students were recognized at a banquet in December. Christina Badurik (pictured below) of Hubbard was named the top recipient.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Structured Literacy In November, alongside the AIM Institute for Learning & Research, the TCESC completed Structured Literacy trainings sessions meeting the requirements of Ohio House Bill 436 with new teachers and those who missed last year's sessions. In total over the past 2 year 500 plus K-3 educators have received the mandatory training.

Mathematics

Formula For Success Educators throughout the county are currently engaged in a comprehensive four-part Mathematics Learning Series known as "Formula for Success: The Power of Effective Math Teaching Practices." Throughout these sessions, teachers will delve into and discover cutting-edge practices aimed at enhancing students' comprehension of the demanding grade-level standards.

The series is designed to empower educators with strategies that deepen and amplify students' grasp of mathematical concepts. By the end of each session, participants will be equipped with practical and impactful techniques that can be seamlessly integrated into their classrooms. These strategies are not only theoretical but are crafted to be immediately applicable, ensuring that teachers can implement them right away to make a tangible difference in their student's learning experiences.

TRUMBULL COUNTY DRONE RACING LEAGUE Lifting Off For Year 3 The TCESC is thrilled to launch the third year of the Trumbull County Drone Racing League! This season, 19 schools are participating. In early December, team supervisors engaged in a professional development session with Tad Douce from Drones in Schools.

"You have support from your ESC; other schools nationwide don't have that. Here, you have 19 teams who can race, compete, and network; what's happening here is exceptional, Tad Douce, Executive Director of Drones in Schools.

AROUND THE COUNTY Community Service Our ED Vocational students have resumed their community cleanup efforts. Recently, the group dedicated their time to weeding, edging, and trimming trees in Niles parks. In the winter months, the groups will be working in local Big Lots, Save-Alot, and the Niles Wellness Center

PRE-K TCESC preschool teachers in Girard recently participated in the district's family literacy night titled Lights, Camera, Literacy!

We Are Thankful The Liberty Learning Center staff created a festive Thanksgiving celebration for their students with a delicious feast and a transformed school. The students enjoyed homemade dishes and pie. Thank you to the staff for making the day all students won’t soon forget.

TRUMBULL COUNTY STEAM SHOWCASE

The TCESC proudly hosted its annual STEAM showcase at Lordstown High School, highlighting the impressive contributions of students from all Trumbull County School Districts on December 12th and 13th. The event served as a dynamic platform for students to present their innovative projects in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).

C&I Supervisor Ed Mackiewicz and Maker Space instructor Andy Scott stand next to the STEAM program's new Ultimaker 3-D printer. This new printer was made possible for our students through a grant courtesy of Howmet Aerospace. Thank you Howmet for your continued support of our program and Trumbull County students.

Students exhibited their creations within the framework of the seven distinct pathways offered by the program. These pathways, namely Aviation and Drones, Coding and Robotics, Design Challenges, Engineering, Mixed Media Art, Performance Art, and Traditional Art, showcased the diverse talents and interests of the participants.

"It's excitging to witness parents and fellow educators come together to admire the students' hard work over the past few months. These students have been tested in every aspect of STEAM education, and we are extremely proud of all their achievements," stated C&I Supervisor Ed Mackiewicz.

TCESC Pre-Apprenticeship Program Opens Doors

“STUDENTS MAKING A SAFER HIGHWAY” The Trumbull County SMASH program unites over 60 students from various Trumbull County districts with partners such as the Ohio State Highway Patrol and OSU Extension Trumbull County to address and promote road safety.

Monthly gatherings at the Trumbull County Educational Service Center facilitate this collaborative effort.

The Trumbull County SMASH program educates students on winter driving safety, providing them with the tools to navigate winter conditions. After attending sessions, students return to their home districts and share their knowledge, promoting safety awareness and responsible driving within the student community.

Niles senior Owen Dilley, in his second year in the Education Extension PreApprenticeship Program at Trumbull County ESC, secured a summer job with Ameriseal—making history as the company's first-ever minor hire. Thanks to skills gained through the program, Owen landed immediate employment and secured a post-graduation position at Ameriseal. His success highlights the program's efficacy in connecting students with real-world opportunities.

Niles High School Principal Stephen Rovnak, says this initiative has proven to be a game-changer for their district. Rovnak emphasized, “It's reaching students who may not have considered college and were uncertain about their future career paths.

The program provides them with a tangible skill set, fostering enthusiasm for their work. They build meaningful relationships, and for some of these students, it's a lifechanging experience, as they now have a clear vision for their future.”

The Trumbull County Educational Service Center’s Education Extension is an Ohio State Apprenticeship Council-recognized pre-apprenticeship program. Which currently serves 26 students from Trumbull County districts, including Niles, Howland, LaBrae, and Lordstown.

School Rescource Officer Workshop

In October, more than a dozen School Resource Officers (SROs) from Trumbull County Schools convened at the Trumbull County Educational Service Center. They participated in a workshop featuring updates from the Ohio School Safety Center and received legal updates from Trumbull County Juvenile Court Magistrate Terry Swauger.

The SRO programs serve a crucial role in ensuring secure learning environments, equipping school staff with valuable resources, nurturing positive relationships with students, and devising strategies to address issues impacting our youth. The primary objective is to safeguard all children, allowing them to fully realize their potential. Federal data suggests that nationwide, there are approximately 52,000 SROs, both full and part-time, active in schools on a weekly basis, along with an additional 15,500 sworn law enforcement officers in schools, even if they do not hold the official title of SROs.
