HAPPY NEW YEAR! Superintendent, Toby Gibson

GoWarriors!

Happy New Year, Warrior Family! I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday season with family and friends. It’s hard to believe we have just passed the halfway point in the 2022-2023 school year, and I look forward to more great things from our students and staff as we finish the year.

We continue to work towards fulfilling our “3 Big Rocks” and two district goals by laying a foundation that will help our students build for future success. This year, we are offering several new classes that are undoubtedly providing an enhanced educational experience. Students are operating robots, flying drones, building furniture, running businesses, participating in STEM challenges and so much more, all with skills learned right here in Brookfield Schools! BMS Construction Update

Grades 5-8 to End School Year with Remote Learning

As most of you know, the district has been dealing with an expansive soil (shale) issue under a section of the middle school hallway since the new K-12 building was opened in August of 2011. There have been a couple of temporary fixes to the section of hallway over the years, but a permanent solution is currently underway

Phase one of the process began in October and addressed water drainage / shed on the outside of the building. Phase two will begin towards the end of May and includes the removal and replacement of sections of hallway floor and the expansive soil underneath. To help facilitate this project and keep it on schedule, middle school students will finish the 2022-2023 school year remotely. Students' last day of in-person learning will be Wednesday, May 10. There will be no classes May 11 or 12 to allow teachers time to prepare for online learning. Students' first day of remote learning will be Monday, May 15.

Litigation to recoup the district’s cost of the project (36%) continues through the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.

Safety Grant Received

In late November, Ohio Governor

Mike DeWine announced the recipients of the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC) K-12 School Safety Grant Program The program allows public schools to improve their buildings' overall safety and security 2,000 schools applied for funding with only 708 in 57 counties awarded funds BLSD was awarded $221,466 which will be used to update camera systems, install exterior door sensors, provide panic buttons for district staff, and add a GPS system for our fleet of buses. Grants are a key component of insuring the financial health of the school district. They help fund programs that are essential to the educational success of our students

Any money received from grants helps to offset expenses that would otherwise come out of the general fund Most grants have to be used for specific purposes and require extensive reporting to the entity that has given us the money

Positive Behaviors Earn District Bronze Award

BLSD was honored to receive a Bronze Recognition Award from the Ohio Department of Education for our implementation of PBIS supports PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports and is an evidence-based, tiered framework for supporting students’ behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health When implemented consistently, PBIS improves social-emotional competence, academic success, and school climate BLSD building committees continue to model positive behavior expectations across educational settings and reward students who demonstrate those behaviors with various incentives and prizes Positive behaviors focus on attributes related to our FIELD acronym -

Staff Professional Development Ensures Student Success

What is Professional Development?

The Ohio Department of Education has created a set of Professional Development (PD) standards that, when implemented in a meaningful way, allow educators to gain the new knowledge, skills, and ideas that allow them to best meet students’ learning needs. Educators are required to undergo set amounts of PD training in order to remain certified or to obtain certification.

Brookfield Professional Development

In order to increase teacher effectiveness and, as a result, student outcomes, the BLSD provided multiple PD sessions for staff in the first semester. With the help of various community organizations, school departments, administration, and the Trumbull County Educational Service Center, staff engaged in:

Curriculum Pacing/Program Implementation

Key Vocabulary Routine

Analyzing data reports to drive instruction

Integration of New Technology

Using Problem-Based Learning (PBL) across the curriculum

Dyslexia Training

Student & Adult Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Brookfield Builds...

The Ram Repo

BLSD sees the importance of not only providing a well-rounded education but also the support services to help students and families prosper Our partnership with the non-profit group Vision to Learn provided vision screenings to all students and, as a result, they provided more than 100 prescription glasses, at no cost We also continue the K-4 Backpack Program and the Warrior Food Pantry in grades 5-12. Our new “Brookfield Builds…” initiative is connecting families to the educational experiences our Warriors receive every day. From art and woodworking to robotics and cooking, we are opening windows to future success. Soon we hope to offer First Aid / CPR certification classes and more, so stay tuned! We can't wait to see what Brookfield Builds...in you!

BLSD Department of Teaching, Learning, and Accountability

Our Department

The BLSD Teaching, Learning, and Accountability Department provides leadership and support to staff that assists with teaching and learning in all educational programs. Assessment data helps the department target areas where the district is "glowing" and/or "growing" and uses that information to guide instructional decisions and the implementation of improvement plans to increase student achievement. This perspective is essential in ensuring our curriculum meets high standards and that our delivery method is effective.

Reading Initiative

One area the department is focusing on this school year is reading. The in-depth science behind how students learn to read through explicit instruction in phonics, reading, and writing drove the district to invest in phonics and phonemic awareness programs to close reading gaps. Our goal is to ensure that all Brookfield students are learning to read effectively so they can read to learn! New programs such as Sonday and Heggerty are part of the everyday ELA curriculum in grades K-5. With hard work and effective implementation of these programs, teachers are helping our students increase their reading skills every day! It is so exciting to observe the students' progress - see the results below!

District Receives Top Special Education Rating

Each year, every district in Ohio receives an annual rating for Special Education per the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) This is similar to academic district report cards that are reported to districts and families For the second year in a row, Brookfield has achieved the designation of Meets Requirements - 4.00. This is the highest rating calculation a school district can receive. This rating has been achieved through seven performance indicators: disproportionality, timely and initial evaluations, early childhood transition, secondary transition, timely correction of noncompliance, timely and accurate data, and IDEA Audit findings ODE has specific requirements for each performance indicator and scores schools accordingly In order to score an overall score of 4 00, a 4 00 must be scored in each of the seven categories listed.

school finance 101

did you know?!

Managing school finances is vastly different from managing personal finances At home, you can use any part of your revenue to cover any one of your expenses But schools use something called a "fund accounting" system, where the money in our one account is split up into separate lockers. Money in each locker can only be spent for specific purposes and must be accounted for per state and federal Department of Education guidelines. Schools can not borrow funds from one locker and put them in another to cover incurred expenses.

Ohio's public schools are funded (with few exceptions) with state and county funding. The state funding from the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) is calculated primarily on enrollment numbers and the economic conditions of the families that live in the district. The county funding comes from taxes collected on property within the district. So the more students we have, the more funding we receive from the state; and the higher our property values are, the more funding we receive from the Trumbull County Auditor’s office. Currently, just about 41% of our revenues come from property tax collections, with 59% coming from the state and other sources
