Trucking is the dominant way freight moves in Canada and drives our economy and supply chain. From 2016 to 2020, transport trucks moved nearly $420 million in Canada/US trade goods. The estimated GDP for core trucking and logistics in 2023 was $48.4 billion.

THRC’s milestone report: industry labour force pulse check and a look ahead to 2030
THRC looked at the current state of Canada’s trucking and logistics sector and the challenges anticipated for the future in a milestone labour market outlook report that revealed critical insights shaping Canada’s trucking and logistics sector through 2030.
Key findings:
→ Women in trucking: A 27% increase in women joining the sector (2016–2021)
→ Youth: Youth representation behind the wheel and in logistics roles nearly doubled (2016-2021)
→ Job vacancies: Over 40,400 unfilled roles anticipated by 2030

New tools to develop safe, well-trained drivers
Skill recognition for truck drivers is a growing priority in trucking and logistics. While many employers already offer onboarding and finishing programs for newly licensed drivers, they also have access to standardized training resources developed by THRC in collaboration with suite of tools supports employers in training and assessing commercial truck operators while enhancing the capabilities of instructors, coaches, and mentors to deliver consistent, high-quality driver training nationwide.
Insurance Bureau of Canada’s Commercial Trucking working group was proud to be part of the National Occupational Standard team that pulled the toolkit together. These new resources are a key part of supporting improved driver training across the country.

Building a workforce for the future
Young people are choosing to build careers in trucking and logistics
10% of trucking and logistics workers were under the age of 25 in 2021. That means the sector employed 234,185 more youth than it did in 2016. In just five years, the number of drivers under the age of 25 almost doubled — accounting for 218,690 younger drivers behind the wheel.
Empowering women to thrive in transportation
Our sector is still one of the largest maledominated industries in Canada, but the needle is moving. The research underscored the need for continued efforts. THRC offers a growing suite of free tools and resources to help employers attract, recruit, and retain women, support their career choices, and enhance the industry’s appeal.
