Julia Bacha er født i Brasil i 1980, og flyttet som 17-åring til USA for å studere ved Columbia University. Da hun ikke slapp inn i Iran for å ta et masterstudium, dro hun til Egypt og arbeidet med control room, en dokumentar om Al Jazeera. Det ble starten på hennes filmkarriere.

Julia Bacha (b. 1980) moved from her native Brazil to USA at the age of seventeen to study at Columbia University. When she could not get at visa to do her masters in Iran, she went to Egypt and worked on control room, a documentary about Al Jazeera.

I dokumentaren om den palestinske landsbyen Budrus får vi for en gangs skyld se en omfattende ikkevoldelig protestaksjon. I 2003 stod Budrus på randen av utslettelse da Israel ville utvide sikkerhetsmuren slik at landsbyen ble avskåret fra olivenlundene sine. Men gjennom stadige konfrontasjoner med den israelske hæren, klarer ildsjelen Ayed Morrar å samle innbyggerne, både Fatah- og Hamastilhengere, til ikkevoldelig motstand. Hans 15 år gamle datter, Iltezam, organiserer kvinnene og får også dem med i motstandskampen. Men vil den israelske hæren la seg stanse av sivil motstand?

Filmen gir oss et innblikk i motstandskampen fra flere sider av konflikten, også den israelske. I sentrum av dokumentaren står far og datter, to fascinerende mennesker som hvert på sitt vis gir grobunn til et voksende håp om rettferdighet.

The pictures we see from the conflict between Israel and Palestine usually show violence ranging from thrown rocks to laser guided bombs. But some practice non-violence, and one of these stories is told in the documentary budrus. The village Budrus lies on the West Bank, and was in 2003 threatened with destruction as Israel was erecting its Separation Barrier. Ayed Morrar manages to organize the locals in peaceful protests, but it all seems hopeless until his daughter Iltezam is spurred to mobilize the women too, and bring them to the front lines of the struggle. Can the barrier really be redirected and the village spared through non-violent means?

The film presents interviews with all parties involved, from Israeli soldiers to Hamas and Fatah representatives. In the center of it all are father and daughter, two fascinating characters who inspire a growing hope of peace and justice amongst the people.

Yoav Shamir ble født 1970 i Tel Aviv. Han er mest kjent for sin dokumentar checkpoint fra 2003. I Israel har hans dokumentarer skapt heftig debatt og Shamir har også blitt beskyldt for antisemittisme.

Yoav Shamir was born in Tel Aviv in 1970. As a filmmaker he is most noted for his documentary checkpoint. Shamir’s explorations of the Israeli political climate have made him a controversial figure, with some claiming him an anti-Semitic.

Vi møter blant annet den kjente Israel-kritikeren Norman Finkelstein, samt flere høytstående medlemmer av Anti Defamation League i usa. Siden Shamir er jøde selv, ser de på ham som en alliert og uttaler seg forbausende åpent om sitt arbeid for Israel. Filmen vil garantert skape debatt blant de som ser den.

Being an Israeli, filmmaker Yoav Shamir has never himself experienced antiSemitism, even though the Israeli press is full references to anti-Semitic incidents in countries all over the world. Driven by a curiosity about the issue of the alleged anti-Semitism, Shamir launches on a quest, visiting critics and supporters of Israel in usa, speaking to Israeli officials while traveling in Europe, and following an Israeli high school class on their trip to Auschwitz.

Does anti-Semitism still represent a threat to Jews in the Western world today, or is the Holocaust used by the Israeli right wing to discredit their critics? defamation addresses this question in a fresh and unassuming manner. In this Swedish documentary, we are introduced to four Israeli peace activists, each with a different approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. An ex-soldier, a grandmother, a rabbi, and an anarchist are trying to confront and oppose the Israeli occupation on Palestinian soil.

We are taken to checkpoints and occupied territory, and we witness the confrontations between soldiers and peace activists. In their desperate struggle to somehow change the current conflict, to create a dialogue between Israelis and improve life for the Palestinians, the peace activists are often met with skepticism and hatred from fellow Israeli countrymen. Through bits of interviews, the peace activists elaborate their own criticism of Israel’s forty years of occupation and illegal settlements. At its core, israel vs israel is about following ones moral voice without turning to simplified hostile images.

Shlomi Edlar is a war correspondent and journalist for Israel’s Channel 10 News who has covered the Gaza Strip for nearly twenty years. In 2007 he received the Sokolov Prize, Israel’s most prestigious media award. precious life is his first feature documentary.

2010 CHAIM YAKARIM / PRECIOUS LIFE precious life handler om Mohammed, en fire måneder gammel palestinsk gutt med en medfødt sykdom som gjør at han mangler immunforsvar. Han trenger beinmargstransplantasjon som kan utføres ved et israelsk sykehus, men det er dyrt. Legen hans kontakter krigskorrespondenten Shlomi Eldar, som via israelsk TV får skapt engasjement rundt den lille guttens skjebne. Når en anonym israelsk donor gir pengene behandlingen koster, møter den palestinske familien et Israel annerledes enn det de hadde forestilt seg. I Israel er det gress på bakken og en velstand de ikke er vant til. Israelerne de møter viser dem en omsorg de ikke har forventet. Men så enkelt kan det vel ikke være?

Hvordan verdsetter vi livet? Spørsmålet treffer essensen i avstanden mellom to verdensbilder, det muslimske og det jødisk-kristne. Med full respekt for begge, byr filmen på et innblikk i en konfrontasjon mellom disse, sammen med et genuint håp om fred og forsoning.

precious life is a film about Mohammed, a four-month-old Palestinian boy born with a rare immune deficiency. He could receive treatment at an Israeli hospital, but it is much too expensive. His doctor turns to journalist Shlomi Eldar for help, and through Israeli TV, Eldar generates interest for the little boy’s fate. When an anonymous Israeli donates money to cover the expenses for Mohammed´s treatment, the family meets an Israel they never expected. There the grass is green and they are surrounded by unaccustomed wealth. The Israelis they meet are friendly and extremely concerned about Mohammed’s condition. But things can’t be this easy.

How do we estimate the value of life? This question describes the distance between two world views, Muslim and Judeo-Christian, with extreme precision. With full respect for both, precious life offers an inside look at a true confrontation between the two, along with a genuine hope for peace and resolution.

January 2004, Sumaya, a young Palestinian woman, stands in front of her house in the Palestinian suburb Abu Dis. Not far away a wall is being built by Palestinian workers, 10 to 15 meters each day. As she looks out over the city of Jerusalem, she explains in what way the wall will change the life of her family and neighbors. The creation of the wall has enormous consequences for the people who have to get to work, to schools, or to hospitals.
