Spesialvisninger
sPEciAl scrEEnings
A special screening is not like other screenings, to point out the obvious. Under this title, we present a whole range of exceptional film experiences, like the silent film concerts and the outdoor cinema. One of the most special things about these special screenings, is that most of them are absolutely unique, meaning you have only once chance to catch them!

TAPTE HORISONTER
losT horizon
USA 1937
Capra mottok tre Oscarpriser for beste regi.
THE diREcTOR:
Frank Capra (b. 1897) was one of the 1930’s greatest producers, both in quality and quantity. Capra wanted to highlight the hero in the man in the street, and is most famous for stories where the common man fights corruption and cruelty. Capra received 3 Oscars as best director.
FilMOGRAPHY (UTvAlG/SElEcTiON):
1934 IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT / DET HENDTE EN NATT 1936 MR. DEEDS GOES TO TOWN 1939 MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON / MR. SMITH KOMMER TIL WASHINGTON 1946 IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE / LIVET ER VIDUNDERLIG Tromsø Filmklubb feirer 50 år!
The local film society of Tromsø, Tromsø Filmklubb, celebrates its 50th anniversary! In this occasion there will be a screening of the first movie shown in the history of Tromsø Filmklubb.
The film is based on the book Lost Horizon by James Hilton. lost horizon is a spectacular drama in traditional Capra style. A plane crashes into the Himalayas. On board the plane is the British diplomat Robert Conway together with some civilians. The passengers are saved by locals who take them to the hidden city of Shangri-La. The city seems like Utopia for the lost men, and the atmosphere is a wonderful distraction from the harsh war-mongering (wwii). But paradise might not be all that it seems to be, and for whom is this a paradise?
After the screening, the annual party in the spirit of Tromsø Filmklubb is held, and this year we celebrate with a 1961-theme. We’ll drink, sing, yodel and laugh, all in accordance with the 1961 etiquette.

FRANcE 1959
THE diREcTOR:
François Truffaut (1932-1984) was a film buff from the age of seven, he was the founder of the French film magazine Cahiers du Cinema and his first film was the short les mistons (1957). Truffaut became one of the top auteurs of the new wave in French film from the late 1950s and onwards. During his career he directed or wrote near thirty films.
FilMOGRAPHY (UTvAlG/SElEcTiON):
1962 JULES ET JIM / JULES AND JIM 1962 ANTOINE ET COLETTE / ANTOINE AND COLETTE 1966 FAHRENHEIT 451 1973 LA NUIT AMÉRICAINE / DAY FOR NIGHT 1975 L’HISTOIRE D’ADÈLE H. / THE STORY OF ADELE H. på vei mot livet er sammen med til siste åndedrag (tiff 2010) blitt
the 400 blows and breathless (tiff 2010) may be seen as the beginning of the «New Wave» in French film. Contrary to his fellow auteurs Godard and Resnais who were experimenting with the language of film, introducing jump cuts and different levels of time, Truffaut in his first feature film takes a more humanistic approach, showing great precision and sensitivity in his description of characters and surroundings. Truffaut is not afraid of mixing autobiographical elements into the tragic story of thirteen-year-old Antoine Doinel.
the 400 blows may be the new wave film with the most references to Italian neo-realist films of the preceding decades. The dark sides of life are given a humorous touch, while the light sides all have a hint of sadness.
NB. Subtitled in Norwegian.

GERMANY 1927
THE diREcTOR:
Fritz Lang (b. 1890, Vienna) was an AustrianAmerican filmmaker, screenwriter, and occasional film producer and actor. He was one of the main filmmakers during the German Expressionism.
FilMOGRAPHY (UTvAlG/SElEcTiON):
1919 DER HERR DER LIEBE / THE MASTER OF LOVE 1922 DR. MABUSE, DER SPIELER / DR. MABUSE: THE GAMBLER 1931 M – EINE STADT SUCHT EINEN MÖRDER / M 1936 FURY 1937 YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE 1953 THE BIG HEAT metropolis er en av historiens mest ikoniske filmer, en såkalt kultklassiker.
metropolis is one of the world’s most iconic films, and is by many considered a cult classic. Fritz Lang’s sci-fi epic has inspired directors, architects and artists since it premiered in 1927, and films such as blade runner and star wars are obviously influenced by, and indebted to, metropolis.
The film is a love story, a dystopia and a critique of blind faith in technological development. Immediately after the premiere in 1927, almost a quarter of the film was cut, an act of butchery by Paramount in the us and the German Ufa. For more than eighty years, the excised material was believed to be lost forever, but in 2008 a full version of the film unexpectedly turned up in a small museum in Buenos Aires. After painstaking reconstruction, the film was screened as originally intended at the Berlinale in 2010, and now it will also be shown in Tromsø. Don’t miss out on this extraordinary experience!
THE ARTISTS
– THE MUSiciANS PERFORMiNG AT THE SilENT FilM cONcERT

CLEANING WOMEN (FINLAND)
Beside from looking like a gang of sharp and stylish cross-dressing zombies, Cleaning Women are known for their alternative ways in choosing their instruments. Instead of regular music stores, these mad professors head for trash bins and home accessory shops in search for «other sounds». And so it must be, as their weapons of choice include string instruments made out of clotheshorses and a drum kit that includes parts from at least three washing machines.
NASRA ALI OMAR (NORWAY)
Nasra Ali Omar is a crossover musician, exploring a variety of genres and expressions. She combines improvisation and spontaneity, related to her background; traditional African percussion and studies in contemporary and classic music. IVAN AFANASYEV (RUSSIA)
Ivan Afanasyev is a musician, arts enthusiast and activist from Petrozavodsk, North-West Russia, who creates blurred sleepy ambience and droning loops of relaxed sound. His approach is far from traditional as he often uses the simplest and non-professional sound sources such as cassette tapes, dictaphones, toys; as well as voice, percussion and effect pedals. He is currently playing in the musical duo Love Cult with his wife Anya Kuts. They also run an experimental record label called Full of Nothing. In addition to his musical work, Afanasayev has participated in different photo projects, written numerous articles on experimental music for various magazines and fanzines, made experimental poetry readings, and even given a living statue performance!

THE diREcTOR:
Jon Haukeland (1973) is a Norwegian director and screenplay writer. He has documentaries and worked in Norwegian television.
FilMOGRAPHY (UTvAlG/SElEcTiON):
2004 MANNEN SOM ELSKET HAUGESUND/ THE MAN WHO LOVED HAUGESUND (DOC) 2007 ELVA BAK HUSET / BEHIND THE HOUSE (SHORT) I 1999 møttes en gruppe unge serbere og albanere for å diskutere situasjonen i Kosovo.
In 1999, a group of young Serbs and Albanians met to talk about the situation in Kosovo. Ten days later nato started their bombing of Balkan. In 2010 the group reunites. At their first meeting the Albanians were the ones who felt suppressed and expressed their frustrations about the in which situation they were in. Ten years later, the tables are turned. The war has made its mark on both sides of the conflict, but their perception of the bombing in 1999 varies greatly. Can they reestablish the dialogue they started ten years ago? Can they look past the traumas they have experienced? And is it possible for the two groups to live together in peace?
This documentary shows how the same reality can be perceived in radically different ways. reunion also shows how people who meet each other face to face open up for the other’s point of view. Even if the foundation is fragile, the determination to make a common future is strong.

SIZZLE: A GLOBAL WARMING COMEDY
USA 2008
THE diREcTOR:
Dr. Randy Olson was born in Germany in 1955, and grew up both there and in the us. He worked as a marine biologist for 15 years before he turned to filmmaking. He has directed both comedies and science documentaries, the genres that blend in sizzle.
FilMOGRAPHY (UTvAlG/SElEcTiON):
1998 RHINOS 2006 FLOCK OF DODOS: THE EVOLUTIONINTELLIGENT DESIGN CIRCUS 2008 SHIFTING BASELINES IN THE PUGET SOUND (SHORT) Randy Olson er utdannet marinbiolog, og likte Al Gores film om global oppvarming – men han savnet forskernes perspektiver.
Dr. Randy Olson used to work as a marine biologist, but found his true calling as a filmmaker. He liked Al Gore’s movie about global warming, but wondered where all the scientists were. To rectify this he made sizzle, a blend of documentary, mockumentary and reality. He has a hard time finding someone to back the project, however, and has to settle for a strange couple whom have Tom Cruise listed as the number one person he should interview – even though, as Olson points out, he is a Scientologist, not a scientist. The project on the whole starts to heat up when his cameraman turns out to be a global warming skeptic, and starts to argue with the scientists they interview.
Through interviews and a road trip to post-Katrina New Orleans, the film turns what we call the global warming debate into a confusing kaleidoscope. sizzle turns up the heat!

NORWAY 1925
The film was restored by the Norwegian National Library / Digital Filmlab / Camera Magica (Morten Skallerud). It is presented here for the first time with music composed by Matti Bye and Kristian Holmgren.
The film follows the attempts of the Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen and his American partner Lincoln Ellsworth to reach the North Pole in two flying boats, the N-24 and N-25. With a crew of four the expedition started from the Spitsbergen islands on 21st May 1925. The journey turned unexpectedly dramatic after the N-24 crashed in the ice. The whole crew then had to make it back to civilization on board one plane designed for only three passengers...
The film was distributed in different versions in a number of countries. This newly restored Norwegian version offers splendid footage of arctic landscapes, animal life and the happy return of the explorers to Spitsbergen and Oslo. We meet Roald Amundsen, Hjalmar Riiser-Larsen, Karl Feucht, Leif Dietrichson, Lincoln Ellsworth, and Oscar Omdal.

Love is a powerful force that, once it has taken hold of us, shakes us thoroughly – all the more so when it comes to mature people. Serious illness can strike just as intensely, just as suddenly, as love does – something we are never prepared for, even less so when it occurs early in life. my beloved tells the story of two people at the intersection of these two currents. The distinction between past, present and future are blurred when a 51 year old is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. There is no map to guide him and his newfound love through this territory. Norwegian filmmaker Hilde Korsæth has followed this couple through a difficult year, from 2008 to 2009.

HANS HENRIK BERGS MINNEFILM
hAns hEnriK bErg’s mEmoriAl film
Hans Henrik Berg var kinosjef i Tromsø i over 40 år.
Hans Henrik Berg was the director of the cinema in Tromsø for over 40 years. He was a key figure behind establishing the film festival in 1991, and is considered by many as the founding father of tiff. When he died in 2005 the board of directors of Tromsø International Film Festival decided that the festival should have a screening in Hans Henrik’s memory every year on the last Sunday of the festival at Verdensteateret. The selected movie is to represent his visions for the festival.
David Moen started his work at Tromsø Kino in 1995. In the beginning he was mainly connected to the festival, which at the time still was a project connected to the cinema in Tromsø. In the following years he has been an employee at both Tromsø Kino and tiff. Today he is the Program Manager at Aurora Kino, head of programming for the cinemas in Tromsø, Alta, Kirkenes and Narvik.
David Moen will introduce the screening of how i ended this summer in the memory of Hans Henrik Berg, Sunday 17.30 at Verdensteatret.

MEET THE FUTURE FILM GENERATION

Ole Giæver What does the future of film look like? What will the next generation of filmmakers care about? Where will they come from? Tromsø International Film Festival has invited the Tvibit Film House and Nordic Youth Film Festival to present the coming generation of Northern Norwegian filmmakers at this special screening.
For more than ten years, the Tvibit Film House and Nordic Youth Film Festival (nuff) have coached young filmmakers. Thousands of ninth graders have made films at Tvibit, thanks to the national program «The Cultural Rucksack», and hundreds of aspiring young filmmakers have worked with professional filmmakers at nuff workshops.
Nordic Youth Film Festival, which takes place each year in June, has been an important international platform for youth cinema and a meeting place for many young filmmakers since 2003.
At the special screening meet the future film generation, you can see the winning films from nuff 2010.
In March 2010 Tvibit initiated a new project for young filmmakers: dokfilmfangst, a documentary film workshop. Among thirty applications, eight young filmmakers were chosen to work with Norwegian documentary filmmaker Gunhild Asting over a whole year. Three documentary films from the project will be screened at meet the future film generation.
In December 2010, Tvibit announced a new project: filmfangst ii, a feature film project that will take place over the next three years. The Norwegian filmmaker Ole Giæver will work with a specially selected team of young filmmakers, with the goal of making a feature film. At meet the future film generation, Ole Giæver will present the team.
screen is the name of another new project in 2010. It is a collaboration between Tvibit and The Norwegian Peace Corps. In September 2010 four young filmmakers from Tvibit went to Africa, two of them to Nairobi and two to Cape Town, where they held workshops for young people there. A selection of these films will be screened at meet the future film generation!
