However, sometimes we're unfaithful to God. Everything takes priority: our jobs and personal goals. We have become complacent with putting God on the back shelf, and taking him off, when it's convenient.

Imagine, if the Lord handled our business the same way. In other words, he decided to put our business last. I am going to be honest; I would be in a complete mess.

The word clearly tells us, "But seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you."

- Matthew 6:33 First, we have to recognize we have left, and then ask the Lord for forgiveness. It's imperative that we return back to our first love, which is Jesus Christ.

Triumphant: "Why did you decide to run for office?"

Barb Girtman: “I am running to change the prioritizes of the Volusia County Council to Put the People First. It is time for a representative in District 1 who will lead as a unifier and collaborator, not a divider. I have gotten involved because I feel we need someone like me an experienced, caring and encouraging leader at this time. People in District 1 tell me it is time for a new voice, vision and energy through fresh eyes and I’m ready to be the leader we need at this time.

"Joyce Cusack has termed out so she is not eligible to run again for the At-Large seat she holds. Although I am running for District 1, I am concerned, there may be a void of representation in the community if the people do not vote to elect me.

Especially, representation from the West Side of Volusia. It's critical to me that we have leadership throughout the community. I have been around and served the people in all communities. We need a seat at the table to have inclusion and diversity of thoughts, ages and culture for decisions impacting our future. This is what has really motivated me, not only to represent the people of color, but to have someone who has an eye for everyone with no exclusions. That is my approach to life and I want to encourage other leaders. My agenda is to be the change I want to see and that is my motivation."

I serve as an elected official for the past 4 years as Commissioner for the West Volusia Hospital Authority. As a Realtor, I represent 1000’s of Realtors in Tallahassee fighting for affordable housing and property rights. I lead the Government Committee for the West Volusia Realtors and was selected as the key contact for the State House District 26 Representative, currently Patrick Henry. I also have a passion for local business; I served two terms on the City of Deland Economic Development and the Strategic Planning Committee. Also collaborated with Accelerate Business Mentoring and created the Minority Business Network directory.

Triumphant: "Why is important for voters to come out and vote, Tuesday, August 28th, 2018?"

Barb Girtman: "It is important for voters to come out on August 28th because our voice is our power. When the people vote the people win" We need the public to make sure their family, friends, church and co-workers are registered to vote and they come out on or before August 28th.

"Recently, Lisa Lewis, Supervisor of Elections, showed how many races are won or lost by less than 10 votes. When people feel their votes don't count they stay home. It does count, especially our politics is local, and they impact your day to day: taxes, roads, and safety. It is all about local dollars and how they are used and who is making decisions. Are the decisionmakers considering the whole, or are they considering just those they want to see have an advantage? Know that your vote is your power and don't take it for granted. There are too many people who have died for the right to vote. Women and people of color know when we vote we win and so do your concerns"

Triumphant: "What motivates you the most and How will that be instrumental with Volusia County Council District 1?"

Barb Girtman: "Helping Deland and West Volusia residents gain access to the healthcare they need when eligible the West Volusia Hospital Authority motivates me. The responsibilities for governing responsibilities for a $20 million budget, reviewing policy, eligibility and approving contracts for programs, requires making some tough choices. I will take the same caring, responsible approach to the Volusia County Council. I look forward to looking for opportunities to bringing resources to District 1 to help first responders, essential services, create living wage jobs, retraining, and quality of life concerns for seniors."

"But, when you ask me what motivates me?" "It is the people, the people have told me that I have inspired them, which inspires me. When people tell me that I inspire them to do positive and to be the change that they want to see that is encouraging because that's the seeds that I am deliberately planting, and that is what I am sowing throughout the communities.

What is really inspiring is how the volunteers for my campaign who did not know each other have become a network.

Each day I find a new connection formed through the volunteer opportunities. I am a collaborator and unifier so most recognize I am not just doing this for personal gain; it matters to have that representation and until I look around and see it, I feel accountable to be the one to help create it."

Triumphant: "Who are your greatest mentors in the political arena and within your personal life?"

Barb Girtman: "There are several people that are my go to and Joyce Cusack, Volusia County Councilwoman at Large and her sister, Joan Lane, State Committeewoman Volusia County are the core for this community to me, when it comes to the political atmosphere. They are our legacy. They have groomed myself and Commissioner Jessica Davis to carry on their vision. I again feel accountable to have a bench and hope to inspire people who want to serve and lead. We need those willing to sacrifice to be in the community and represent the whole as we stand on their shoulders to reach out to the next generations.

Triumphant: "What makes you different from the next candidate running for this office?"

Barb Girtman: "The difference between me and the 3 male candidates in this race is I am a West Volusia woman. The support for my campaign is coming from the people in West Volusia District 1, unlike other candidates. I qualified by collecting more than 1200 petitions, which means I have met and listened to the people. I live in DeLand and I have been volunteering and serving the people for years. I did not just start serving the community when I wanted to run for the Volusia County Council office, unlike the other candidates. I have served on the Rotary Club Board for years and I was able to secure funds for mentoring, food and MLK programs. Also I’m on the board for the West Volusia Beacon News, I encouraged the start of the community voice column. I serve on many community boards to be a resource for children, arts, culture, civic and spiritual support and resources I commend anyone who is willing to put themselves out there to run for office, however the difference is "I've been on the front line fighting for the community and within the community to make a difference. I've been successful by being positive and leading the way. I can be positive and assertive in leadership and guidance while being fair to all sides even the ones I may not agree with. I am open to hearing and dealing with all sides.

My campaign needs your help. It is crunch time to win the primary on August 28th. There are 4 candidates in District 1 race, the top two go on to the general on November 6th. Which happens to be my Birthday, so let’s make this happen. Don't forget to request a mail-in ballot or Vote early.
