Triumphant: Can you tell us about your journey?

Carol Chisolm: I was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to the late Rev. Dr. Eric A. Mayes, Jr. and Bernice Mayes. I am the youngest of six children and we were known as Preacher's kids. My parents said I could sing before I was able to talk well. I sang my first solo in church at the age of 4. At the age of 5, I joined our church and choir because I loved singing.

What are some things people may not know about you?

My siblings wanted to name me, Felicia Carol, but my father, Rev. Mayes wanted to name me, Carol Felicia. I was enlightened by my father's decision because he had a divine revelation and connection with the Lord because Carol means "song" and Felicia means "joy".

For decades now, I have been passionately singing and writing joyful songs, which can be found on several platforms today.

Triumphant: How did your father, the late Rev. Dr. Eric Mayes, Jr. significantly impact your life toward becoming the woman you are today?

until I became older because I resented being a preacher's kid growing up because we were held at higher standards than children that did not have parents in ministry.

There was a time in my life where these expectations affected me, and I decided that I did not want to sing anymore because of my overall experience dealing with people and their expectations.

How did your father feel about your decision Carol?

Carol Chisolm: My father was an encourager he often recognized things I could not recognize in myself. My Dad took me to my first singing audition with the Evelyn Pittman Theatre Company in Oklahoma.

My father recognized greatness inside me, even though I could not see it in myself he continued to encourage me.

There was a time where I had to choose between cheerleading and singing, and cheerleading would take precedence over my passion of singing.

My father never pushed; however, he encouraged me with everything I had to do growing up.

Carol Chisolm: I did not initially recognize how significant my father was

There was a time in my life where I felt that I wasn't growing spiritually in my life. My father's recommendation was that I needed to go where I felt I could grow in God, and where I could be used by Him. Even with my father's recommendation, I decided to remain under his leadership and not go anywhere else.

Triumphant: Can you tell us about your experience in Europe?

Carol Chisolm: My husband, Kim and I moved to Germany and lived there for six years. This is where my spiritual journey began, and I had my own personal lifechanging encounter with the Lord, then I understood the “what” and the “why” I sing.

“Amazing Grace” was no longer just a hymn, but it became reality to me. I was blind but now I see, and Jesus was no longer just a lovely song. I had had an undeniable encounter with His Holy Spirit and my ministry has been flourishing and

blossoming since my personal experience.

This experience allowed me to develop a personal relationship with God for myself, and I realized, "wow" my father, Rev. Dr. Eric Mayes, Jr. is significant. He was full of wisdom, knowledge, and a trailblazer. He was the first African-American to graduate from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1963 before Civil Rights Act of 1964. Rev. Mayes remained at the same church for over 48 years and he left a great legacy behind.

Triumphant: What kind of legacy would you like to leave behind?

Carol Chisolm: I want to wholeheartedly live up to his legacy, by continuing to move forward. I don't think I'll ever come close to filling my father's shoes, but I am going to make every effort to complete the purpose God has for me.

In doing so, I know dad would be proud of me.

Triumphant: How long have you and Kim been married? Do you have any children?

Triumphant: Can you tell us about your show called, Onederfully Made?

Carol Chisolm: My husband, Kim and I have been married for 34 years and we have two children.

Carol Chisolm: I am the host of Onederfully Made, it is a live weekly podcast that comes on Facebook every Tuesday at 8 pm (Eastern). Our goal is to inspire others to be courageous and confident while walking in their calling for Christ. We encourage everyone to embrace it and own it because we are His masterpiece.

Triumphant: Can you tell us about your Alopecia journey?

Carol Chisolm: My journey began 30 years ago, and I have been almost bold for over 10 years. I was devastated and humiliated in the beginning with losing my hair and being confined to wigs and weaves.

In 2019, I felt compelled by the Holy Spirit to reveal my true authentic self so God could get the glory. I thank God for His strength to help me reveal my baldness.

I call it my "re-born again" day, and that was the day I uncovered my shame and trusted God to use me to bless others who suffered from self-image and self-esteem issues. I have Alopecia, but it doesn't have me!

Triumphant: You have several books that you either authored or coauthored, can you tell us about them at this time?

I am the author of "Breaking the Shadows: How to Embrace Your True Self and Live in the Light of Gods Glory" (not yet published) and "She Writes for Him: Black Voices of Wisdom".

Triumphant: What are you wanting to accomplish through your singing and being an author of several books?

Carol Chisolm: My desire is for people to experience true liberty in Christ, and uplifting people and encouraging them through the Word of God. I have a passion for God's people and a passion for ministry and music. My debut CD, "Let Jesus Fix It for You", brought international acclaim. There are nine songs on this CD and it breathes life into the listeners.

The music is a mixture of gospel music in Contemporary R&B style plus Contemporary Christian music (CCM) pop sound.

Triumphant: Can you tell us about "Rolled Away?"

Carol Chisolm: It was cowritten with a friend of mine, Jackie Waller-Barineau and she produces some of my music. We met in an online songwriter's conference where we had to co-write a song. We worked so well together that we decided to continue our partnership since we both live in Florida.

"Rolled Away" is an anointed and powerful song that can be played for any occasion throughout 365 days per year.

Triumphant: Do you have any other songs you have written? Do you have any projects that you are working on now?

Carol Chisolm: I've written several songs, some published and some unpublished. I think one of my favorite songs is a co-write with my dad. He wrote the lyrics to a song called, "I Feel the Spirit Moving" and gave it to me to come up with the melody.

I am going to rewrite this song and turn it

into a hymn, and it will be published as a tribute to my father.

In 2019, I released my single, “Wonderfully Made”.

My newest single, "Let Us Breathe", is scheduled to be released this month, August 20, 2021.

Triumphant: Carol, what makes you so humble? I have seen you walk into a room, and the climate changes and God's light is radiant through you.

Carol Chisolm: My humbleness comes from a place of knowing that I would not be anything without God. The second reason is I know I would not be anything without people that have encouraged and supported me along the way. There is no way that I could've made it by myself, and I never want to take anything from God's glory. Everything I am is by the Grace of God, and the prayers and everything people have put into me. This includes people that have prayed for me when I was yet a child, and they encouraged me and would not allow me to give up.

Triumphant: What are some valuable lessons you have learned during this Pandemic?

Carol Chisolm: I learned it is alright to not physically be in the church building.

In the beginning, it was challenging not going to church because that is what we were accustomed to doing.

I began watching church virtually through YouTube and it was reinforcement that we are the church, and I can worship Him in my home, church, and anywhere.

Staying home could make you become too relaxed, so I had to get up out of my bed and get dressed to not create bad habits. When they would stand up, then I would stand up at home. There were times when I caught myself eating, and I had to remind myself, "If I was at church, would I be eating, and my answer was, "no".

Carol Chisolm: My father, Rev. Dr. Eric Mayes, Jr. and my mother, Bernice Mayes motivate me. My mother has Alzheimer's and to see the struggles she endures motivates me not to give up. Both my parents instilled a lot of the Word of God in me and covered me with a multitude of prayers. They are the reason I'm able to do the things I do today. I am forever grateful to them.

My prayer life became deeper and it helped me to value relationships with my husband and children.

Triumphant Triumphant:: Do you have any favorite scriptures?

Carol Chisolm: Proverbs 3:5-6, Hebrews 10:36, Psalm 23: 1, Psalm 27:4, and Psalm 139:14 "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." (Proverbs 3:5-6).

"For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise." (Hebrews 10:36).

"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want."

(Psalm 23:1).

Secondly, my siblings and my family motivate me because I want them to be proud of me. My Dad left me a legacy of Christ, and that's what I want to leave my children. "Only what you do for Christ Will Last."

"KEEP ME AS THE APPLE OF THE EYE, HIDE ME UNDER THE SHADOW OF THY WINGS," August is typically a hot month and it’s important to stay hydrated with lot’s of fluids.

As we keep our bodies hydrated our soul’s need to be hydrated as well with God’s word.

The Bible teaches us that Faith is the substance of things hoped for. Many of us have daily routines that we live by that are an act of faith. Things that we take for granted could potentially become a disaster without God’s mercy and faithfulness. A baker relies on faith when baking an apple cobbler. The baker relies on fresh Ingredients, an operable oven to bake the cobbler, working utensils and then the outcome once the apple cobbler is completely baked. It’s a sweet reward once the baker tastes that first slice of the cobbler and it’s delicious.

God shows us that He loves us daily by His mercy and His Grace. In the book of Psalms 17:8, David calls out to God in prayer. He has faith and trusts that God will hear his prayers. He declares that the Lord is his deliverer and his strength. He asks that God show His kindness towards him as he seeks shelter from those who are trying to destroy him. He wants to be the apple of God’s eye and asks God to hide him in the shadow of thy wings.

The phrase, “apple of your eye” first used in the Bible, comes from a Hebrew expression that means “little man of the eye,” and it refers to the tiny reflection of yourself that you can see in other people’s pupils. When you are the apple of someone’s eye it means you are being gazed upon and watched closely by that person. David wanted God to watch him closely.

Like David, we can also be the apple of God’s eye through our faith in Him. When we pray, we should have the assurance that God will answer our prayers. We also must understand that when God answers our prayers it’s in His will not ours, and any difficulty that comes our way God will guide us through those circumstances.

Like the baker uses ingredients to bake the apple cobbler, we need to use the ingredients instructed by God throughout life’s journey. Faith, love, trust, loyalty, kindness, and joy are just some of those ingredients.

So, as you feed your souls with the promises of God, enjoy the sweet treats that God blesses you with to feed your bodies.

When asked by our Publisher, Theresa Jordan, to join her staff of writers, I was super excited........until she added, “Write whatever God lays upon your heart each month”. It was at that precise moment that panic struck me like a wayward slice of the golf ball off of the tee box, determined to hit one of the innocent bystanders before they could hear me yell, “four”........(if you are not a golfer, or student of golf, you’re probably saying, “What is he talking about?” Trust me when I say that panic overwhelmed me for a minute). And then I thought, just take my 37 years of Preaching and 26 years of Pastoral Leadership, and write about the things of God, the Family, and the Church, from a Biblical-Psycho/Social approach to Ministry (I’ll explain that concept in articles to come).

And so, for my very first article with this awesome Magazine Staff, I want to share something that I believe the church world should be aware of.......and that is, the cry of those wounded and hurt by the (oftentimes) meanness of the church, and church people, when it comes to needing someone to cover you when you’ve made a mistake. Now while we all know that no one is perfect, we are not always given the grace and mercy needed from others to forgive us of our transgressions and sins, so (and I am saying this in my most humble of voices), will someone please COVER ME UNTIL I RECOVER. For some strange reason, it seems to be much easier talking the talk of Christianity than walking the walk of Christianity..........and yet, the Word of God insists that we strive for perfection (Spiritual Maturity). Thus, we read our Bibles, we attend our Bible Studies, we Fellowship with each other, and we try to live the very best life possible, leaning on Jesus and trusting in His willingness to provide grace, mercy, and, whenever necessary, unmerited favor. But what happens on that day, when our weakness is seen by you, and no one else? Can you cover me, until I recover?

Well, this is exactly what happened in the passage of scripture that I want to share with you........Noah, who has taken up a career in the production of wine, has had a little too much of the fermented product, and has not only become drunken from the wine, but has stripped off all of his clothes, and is unconsciously lying naked in his tent. Let’s observe this text, recorded in Genesis 9:20-24, “And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard: and he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness. And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him.”

AMP TRANSLATION: “And Noah began to farm and cultivate the ground and he planted a vineyard. He drank some of the wine and became drunk, and he was uncovered and lay exposed inside his tent. Ham, the father of Canaan, saw [by accident] the nakedness of his father, and [to his father’s shame] told his two brothers outside. So Shem and Japheth took a robe and put it on both their shoulders, and walked backwards and covered the nakedness of their father; their faces were turned away so that they did not see their father’s nakedness. When Noah awoke from his wine [induced stupor], he knew what his younger son [Ham] had done to him.”

MSG TRANSLATION: “Noah, a farmer, was the first to plant a vineyard. He drank from its wine, got drunk and passed out, naked in his tent. Ham, the father of Canaan, saw that his father was naked and told his two brothers who were outside the tent. Shem and Japheth took a cloak, held it between them from their shoulders, walked backward and covered their father’s nakedness, keeping their faces turned away so they did not see their father’s exposed body.

When Noah woke up with his hangover, he learned what his youngest son had done..........”

There are three important principles that I would like to cover from this passage, that should be relatable to us all: I. THE REASON FOR OUR UNCOVERING...........

II. THE REASON WHY SOME WON’T COVER US..........

III. THE REASON WHY SOME ARE WILLING TO COVER US............

Let’s begin.

In as much as we would all want to escape seasons of uncovering, whenever we are honest with ourselves, we can usually pinpoint the reason behind it. And so, in this First Principle (THE REASON FOR OUR UNCOVERING), I see three possible reasons: *OUR OVERINDULGENCE OF THINGS The text says that Noah has successfully planted a vineyard, and apparently has enjoyed the fruits of his labor to the point that he is now both drunk, naked, and passed out. And while this is an alcohol issue within this story, it is my belief that whenever we find ourselves overindulging in anything that can cause us to expose ourselves in a negative light (or shall I say darkness), we face an uncovering that could become detrimental to our progress in God’s plan for our future. *OUR CONSCIOUS CARELESSNESS What a sad indictment on us all when we discover that we have become careless in our consciousness. I will give a simple example. Since you already know that if you are running water in your kitchen sink (to wash dishes), why would you carelessly walk into another room without turning off the faucet? Eventually, if you stay in the other room too long, the water in the sink will run out and over onto the floor........causing more work to be done (including now having to mop up the wet floor). So it is with us. If we are careless in our conscious effort in knowing what’s not good for us to do, but do it anyway, we will soon discover that we have placed ourselves in an uncovering way. *OUR CASUAL CHRISTIANITY Let’s be honest......the Saints are not as Holy in their Christian Ways as they used to be. And while I’m not pinpointing things like how we dress (although for some, as I always say, “Just because it’s your size, doesn’t mean you’re supposed to wear it”), there are a lot of things that the new-age Christian does that my Grandmother’s religion would have never allowed. I am not sure if we are supposed to ride the “Party Bus” on Saturday night and then the “Church Bus” on Sunday morning? Yes, being casually minded in our Christianity might be the reason why we find ourselves uncovered at times.

Which brings me to the Second Principle (THE REASON WHY SOME WON’T COVER US), and in it, I also see three possible reasons: *SOME PEOPLE ARE NOT MATURE ENOUGH TO HANDLE YOUR IMMATURITY The Apostle Paul encourages us in Romans 14:16, “Let not then your good be evil spoken of:”, which suggests that it is important of how we show ourselves to others who may not be able to handle an immature side of you. In the words of Colonel Nathan R. Jessup (played by Jack Nicholson, in A Few Good Men) who speaks to Lt. Daniel Kaffee (played by Tom Cruise), “You can’t handle the truth”.........which is what we should always be mindful of when we

are in the presence of those who may not be able to experience your vulnerability. *SOME PEOPLE ARE WAITING ON AN OPPORTUNITY TO DISCREDIT YOUR CREDIBILITY Let us never be so naive into thinking that everyone loves and adores us. On the contrary, there are some people just waiting on you to fall into an uncovered character, so that they can run and tell someone that you are not as credible as you have tried to display in the presence of others.

I’m sure that there is someone reading this article right now, who can tell of the hurt and pain you have felt by the uncovered truth of a vindictive person who meant you no good, as they hurriedly ran to tell others about something they saw you do, without being willing to cover you. *SOME PEOPLE NEVER HAD IT IN THEM.......SO WHY ARE YOU SURPRISED........

This last point in this second principle is simple to comprehend. Yes, unfortunately, there are some people who have never been spiritual enough for you to reveal your vulnerability to. As a matter of fact, your greatest affliction has been caused by you sharing something with them that you already knew they had no spiritual integrity to handle. Now, should we say, “Shame on You, or Them?” As a matter of fact, the text says that all of this happened to Noah (his son, Ham, running to tell of his father’s naked, drunken, and passed out state) while he was in his own tent...........you’ve got to be careful who you give access to your privacy, including the thoughts of your mind and opinions.

Which now brings me to the Third Principle (THE REASON WHY SOME ARE WILLING TO COVER US), and like the first two principles, I see at least three reasons why there are some who can cover you: *THEY KNOW YOUR VALUE (to God, yourself, and to them) Noah’s other two sons, Shem and Japheth, had to be thinking of their father’s value, to not discredit their father like their brother Ham did. Which is why they not only were willing to cover their father, but literally walked in backwards, refusing to observe his nakedness before their eyes. Isn’t it good to know that there are some people who know how valuable you are, to the point that they will not allow your uncovering to remain, but are willing to cover you in anyway possible? It reminds me of the song of old that says, Somebody prayed for me, They had me on their mind They took the time to pray for me I’m so glad they prayed I’m so glad they prayed I’m so glad they prayed for me *THEY KNOW OF THE STAIN TO YOUR REPUTATION IF THIS SETBACK GETS OUT My dad used to always warn me that it only takes one bad stain on your character to erase years of good work........so I must be careful of how I present myself to others. How blessed Noah was to have two sons who understood the importance of his good reputation, and refused to allow (on their watch) to let his current condition destroy his good name. And how blessed we will be also, should someone protect us in this like manner. *THEY KNOW OF THE BETTER YOU.......WHICH FAR EXCEEDS THE WORST OF YOU It is so important for people to see you as God sees you, which according to GENESIS 6:5-8, must have been in the conscious mind of Shem and Japheth. Observe what the text says,

“And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.” Yes, his two sons knew that because of their father, their lives (and their wives) were spared by God, when the rest of mankind was destroyed in the flood rains. There are some people (thanks be to God), who know that you have more good in you than bad, and they will do everything within their power and might, to protect your good name.

And so as I come to the conclusion of this very first article on the pages of Triumphant Magazine, I am reminded of just one more thing. The reason I need you to cover me, until I recover, is because I WILL RECOVER! For the text says (vs. 24), “And Noah awoke from his wine.........”

Yes, this is the good news.........no matter what uncovered state I may fall prey to (and for whatever reason), the truth is I am destined to recover. No matter what we may suffer from........be it our sins, our weaknesses, our faults, our flaws, our shortcomings, our hurt, our pain, our disappointment, our confusion, or whatever else it may be.......it won’t last forever. How do I know? Because we belong to God. He loves us and we love Him too much to remain in our uncovered state of being.

And so, I simply leave you with the same question that I began this article with: On the day that our paths cross, and you happen to see me in a weakened and uncovered state, can I trust you to cover me until I recover?
