TRIO Study Tip for Winter Quarter

Inevitably, every student has moments where they lack motivation. Motivation to get to class, or to finish homework, or really to do much of anything. It's a natural state to find one's self in, but it certainly can't be a state to stay in. So how do you get motivated again?

Let's first take a look at the brain, as this is where motivation lies.

There are two circuits in the brain that tie in with motivation:

1. Top down: the top-down circuit concerns itself with the individual's long-term goal. Let's say, for instance, that a student has a long-term goal of getting into med school and becoming a pediatrician. When that student loses their motivation, say for completing their homework for the week, the top-down motivational circuit can be tapped into. While the homework (short-term goal) seems disconnected with med school (long-term goal), the circuit can hook the two together. "Even though it is mundane, getting my work done on time will help me in med school; I'll have tons of assignments to complete there, so I need to get this done in preparation for the harder stuff coming my way."

2. Bottom up: sometimes there are tasks to complete that have no connection whatsoever to a long-term goal. (And sometimes there is no long-term goal to speak of.) The bottom-up circuit takes that into consideration; motivation is

generated here simply by the task itself. This can be the student trying to make a boring task a little more flavorful. "I've got to read this article on antique spoons by midnight. To make this more interesting, I'm going to draw a spoon after each paragraph." Or it could be that the student suddenly finds a task interesting, even though it's in no way connected to a long-term goal. "Who knew I would enjoy reading about the most famous parrot of 1973?"

So how can you use these circuits to become motivated? Well, when you find yourself in that state, first ask yourself, can I connect this to my long-term goal? And if there's no answer (or no long-term goal), then ask yourself, how can I make this assignment more interesting? You can also try to bring both motivational circuits into play, as well. By doing this, you can make any task much easier to complete.

This can be a difficult thing to do - making these connections - but the more you do it, the easier it is to motivate yourself. So, give it a try the next time you find yourself in this state.
