TRIO Study Tip for Winter Quarter

In our last newsletter, the focus was on creating micro (more concrete) goals to help in obtaining the longer-term (more abstract) goals. This week we will put forward a way to tackle the harder-to-achieve micro goals daily and help make them stick.

One way of tackling micro goals is to try habit stacking. Habit stacking is pairing a new task (such as studying) with an older and more well-established action (such as brushing your teeth). To habit stack with this example, for the three minutes or so that you maintain your dental hygiene, you also read through a "cheat sheet" containing facts that you'll need to know for the next quiz. While this seems like too short a time to study, at the very least it makes it easier for you to start the process. (Which means you may continue studying right after you finish brushing your teeth.)

Your best bet for making this stick is to make a physical connection between the two tasks. In the example above, that might be to place your toothpaste directly on top of the cheat sheet or index card. That way, you're visually reminded of the new habit you want to form. If you want to exercise while brewing coffee, you could place a sweatband around your coffee mug. Anything that helps you visually connect the two actions is helpful.

So, consider writing a list of all of the routines/habits that you already have in your life and a list of things you wish to make habits. Which ones are easily connected? Which ones do you think you can more easily keep up with? Try habit stacking and see what sticks for you!
