Mrs Julia Reid 1st XI Manager

The 2014 hockey season was an important season for hockey at Trinity College. For the first time, all hockey players in Years 8-12 trained on artificial turf at Perth Hockey Stadium each week and Years 7, 8, 9 and 1st and 2nd XI also played home games on turf. Although the results were sometimes disappointing, we took a step forward in improving the quality of the hockey program offered by the College and, hopefully, we will see improvement in results in the years to come.

New coach Mr Daniel Sampey worked with a very young 1st XI team in 2014, with only two Year 12 players in the squad. Daniel Bendotti (12.5) (Captain) and Zachary Betts (12.1) (Vice-Captain) led the team by example and were consistently strong performers both in games and at trainings. Mr Sampey encouraged the boys constantly despite some tough losses at times. The season culminated in a 1-0 victory over Guildford Grammar School which was the first win over Guildford for a number of years and hopefully was an indication of things to come.

Seven Year 10s were part of the 1st XI squad this season, making Trinity the youngest 1st XI team in the competition. With two drawn games with Christ Church Grammar School as well as the victory against Guildford, Trinity finished sixth on the ladder. Congratulations go to Marcus Di Filippo (11.2) on winning the hockey trophy for the 1st XI, as well as being selected in the Australian under 16 schoolboys team to tour Europe in 2015. Thanks must go to Joel Bendotti (11.1) for taking on the position of 1st XI goalkeeper this season. Former Hockeyroo goalkeeper, Ms Toni Cronk, was employed to coach the goalies on a weekly basis towards the end of the season and we will aim to continue this for goalkeepers in all age groups in 2015.

The 2nd XI again had another amazing season coached by Mr Alastair Hay and well led by Captain, Edward Urquhart (12.4). Mr Hay’s Duckworth-Lewis score adjustment system may need some refining in 2015 as performances by the 2nd XI were often well above expectation. Mr Peter Norman’s Year 10A team was depleted with players promoted to the 1st XI, but the team was still able to perform competitively and Trinity’s senior squad for 2015 should be one of the strongest in a number of years.

Trinity Friends of Hockey continued to work on supporting hockey at Trinity in 2014 and I would personally like to thank the committee members for their help and efforts. A movie fundraising event was held, hockey hoodies were again arranged as well as a raffle and sausage sizzle which

I’d like to thank all the coaches this season; Mr Daniel Sampey, Mr Alastair Hay, Mr Peter Norman, Mr Glenn Christiansen, Mr Michael Slack-Smith, Ms Helen Andrich, Miss Elise Kukulka and Mrs Margaret Trutwein for all their hard work. The attendance at the dinner by hockey parents and boys was very strong and indicated there is great support for the sport at Trinity. Thank you to all the parents who encouraged their boys to play hockey. Thank you also to Mr Steve Leahy (’78) for his support in getting hockey onto turf. I look forward to the 2015 season where I’m confident we will start to see the hard work translate into more success on the field.

helped towards the costs of the hockey dinner, trophies and morning teas held at Perth Hockey Stadium. All senior players received a hotdog after training each Thursday afternoon courtesy of Friends of Hockey. Friends of Hockey also treated the Junior School players with a McDonald’s breakfast on the last training day which was very popular.

Plans for the 2015 season are well underway with the Friends of Hockey currently working on the itinerary and details for the hockey tour taking 25 players to Brisbane and the Gold Coast in April. In an effort to strengthen the sense of community within the hockey players at Trinity it is planned that the 1st XI players will be more involved with assisting Ms Margaret Trutwein in coaching the Junior School boys next year. A gala day, with guest coaches, for all year groups is planned for the July school holidays as well as the usual fundraising events.
