Water Polo

Ms Susie Edwards Water Polo Manager

Water polo is still going strong at Trinity in 2014. With a number of new teams being made to cater for the surge in water polo players, Trinity is showing the other schools their amazing skills and power in the water, which is sure to continue to improve over the coming years.

The senior team started 2014 with the inaugural water polo camp over two days in the summer holidays. This gave the players a chance to bond and learn skills which would aid them in the coming season. The days were filled with skills sessions and games and the evening finished with a great team building session led by Mr Kenny Chan. Overall, it was a fantastic camp and a great way to start the season.

With four senior teams in play, some great water polo skills were shown in the pool this year. The 1st VII water polo team finished fourth in the competition for the Dickinson Shield with some hard-fought challenges and great successes. The games against Hale School, Aquinas College and Christ Church Grammar School were fantastic games to watch with the team showing their skills and athletic prowess under pressure. Thank you to the coaches and managers of the senior teams: Mr Andras Jo-Kovaks, Mr Jim Shackleton, Mr Mitch Zekulich (’10), Mr Brad Chapman, Ms Michelle Daly and Mr Noah Harris (’13) for their hard work and dedication to Trinity water polo.

Middle School and Junior School water polo is taking off with teams playing some great games. A big thank you to the Trinity managers and coaches: Mr Chris Morris, Mrs Mary Hickey, Mr Nick Marston, Mr Dion Mepham and Mr Luke Thompson and outside coaches Mr Matt Osman and Mr Hugh Pilgrim. We are sure that with such a surge of interest in the sport and great coaches, Trinity water polo will be successful for many years to come.

Congratulations must go to our current captain and vice-captain of water polo on their accomplishments in Water Polo outside of Trinity. Thomas Rigoll (12.2), Alexander Bogunovich (12.2) and Old Boy Joshua Zekulich (‘13) were all members of the winning Western Australian team in the Under 18 Invitational Water Polo Tournament. Thomas then competed for Australia in the Under 18 Pan Pacific Water Polo Games in Auckland, New Zealand. His team made it to the grand final and took out the silver medal with a score of 10-9. While Alex competed for Australia at the 2014 FINA World Youth Championship in Istanbul, Turkey where Australia was placed ninth overall

and was ranked as the number one defensive team in the tournament, with the fewest goals scored against them. Pivotal to this defence was goal-keeper Josh Zekulich (‘13) and centre back, Alexander Bogunovich (12.2).

To the outgoing Year 12 water polo players: Joshua Adams (12.4), Alexander Bogunovich (12.2), Jarrod Hall (12.5), Kent Jenkinson (12.1), Daniel Lenzo (12.5), Andrew Lim (12.1), Harrison Moore (12.1), Jack Skajko (12.4), and in particular Thomas Rigoll (12.2) and Michael Braut (12.1) who each played every first game in their senior playing years, I thank you all for showing such dedication to water polo and leadership in the pool.

Lastly, thank you to all of the parents who support Trinity water polo, particularly the parent coordinator, Mrs Liz Perry, whose enthusiasm and energy is most appreciated.

We look forward to a fantastic season in 2015.
