The 2014 football season commenced in earnest in the April holidays with a football camp for senior players at the Ern Halliday Recreation Centre in Hillarys. This two and a half day camp culminated in a practice match against a touring team from Xavier College in Melbourne. The performance of the team gave the coaching staff much optimism for the start to the PSA season. A further victory against Clontarf Football Academy ensured confidence was high as they prepared for round one against Wesley College. Unfortunately, in just the second quarter of the season, Callum Radecki (12.1) suffered one of the most brutal injuries seen on a football field. The courage shown by him in attacking the ball unfortunately resulted in his head clashing with a Wesley boy’s collarbone. Callum was knocked out and began fitting on the field, whilst the Wesley player snapped his collarbone. This was unsettling for all in attendance, none more so than the Radecki family.

Unfortunately, Trinity went down to Wesley and then struggled to find their pre-season form, losing to both Aquinas College and Christ Church Grammar School before giving a dominant display against Scotch College. Defeats to Hale School and Guildford Grammar School effectively ended any chance of finishing near the top of the ladder, but to the boys’ credit they continued to be competitive without enjoying the success they desired. One of the highlights of the second half of the season, was the initiative of the Wirrpanda Foundation holding an Indigenous round to coincide with NAIDOC Week. Jayden Gerrand’s (12.2) uncle designed an amazing jumper that the boys wore with pride after being presented to Headmaster, Mr Ivan Banks by former Fremantle player, Troy Cook. Unfortunately, this was the worst performance for the season and team morale was at a low. The team did bounce back to have solid victories over Christ Church and Guildford in the second half of the season. They also pushed both Aquinas and Hale to the final siren showing that they did have the potential to play some outstanding team football.

I acknowledge the coaching staff of John Montagu (’74), Peter Oliver, Michael Brennan (’82) along with trainer, Tom Valentine (’11), for the countless hours of planning, preparation and being available for the players throughout the season. Thank you also to the leadership group of Captain Jarrad Black (12.5) and Vice-Captains, Francis James (12.2) and Michael Braut (12.1), who managed to keep the team focused through some trying times. On behalf of all players, I thank the coaches through the lower grades who put a great deal of effort into

developing our players, often in the most inclement of conditions. To Simon Harvey, Anthony Byrne, Paul Van Vliet, Andrew Jenkin, Ross Jacobs, Cody Leggett (’13), Anthony Lunt, Michael Murphy (’70), John Overton and Dion Mepham your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Congratulations to the Years 8/9 Smarter than Smoking team who made it through to the grand final this year. Unfortunately, they lost by six points after a goal in the final seconds to Comet Bay College. In terms of individual honours, Brandon Starcevich (9.1) is congratulated on being named in the All Australian 15s team which was selected after the National 15 Years and Under Championships held in Sydney. Mason Nicoloau (10.1) was also a vital member of the Western Australian side. Benjamin McGuire (9.5) is also recognised for his efforts playing in an Indigenous carnival in New South Wales where AFL legend, Kevin Sheedy, noticed Ben’s talent and took him aside to talk to Ben about where his football may take him. Finally, I recognise the honour bestowed upon our assistant coach, Michael Brennan (’82), who was inducted into the West Coast Eagles Hall of Fame this year.

I wish all Year 12 footballers the best of luck with their football as they leave school. I encourage players to take up the opportunity to play with Trinity Aquinas Amateur Football Club if they do not go onto a higher level of football. Whether you play in an A grade or E grade side, it is the camaraderie that comes from being a part of a team and club that helps develop character in young people.

Next year the senior players will tour Melbourne in April to take in the culture of Australia’s football capital. With considerable playing strength in the younger years, it is hoped that the 1st XVIII will soon be back near the top of the ladder in the battle for the 2015 Alcock Cup.
