Mr Brendan Chapman Coach 1st VI Volleyball
The Trinity College Volleyball Club continues to enjoy wonderful success both on and off the court as a result of the tremendous support from the volleyball community. I thank all the family members, students and Old Boys who have supported the club by various means over the 2014 season. The club is in the best position that it has ever been, with the initiatives driven by the volleyball committee and families we have provided a promising outlook for the club’s future. Like many previous years, the community spirit and record attendance at events such as the Annual Awards Dinner and Saturday morning home games continues to be a barometer of the health of our club and the benchmark for the remaining PSA volleyball competition. The success experienced off the court has directly translated into success on the court with our teams experiencing considerable success at many levels and, once again, winning the Brother Carrigg Shield.
The 2014 season for the Trinity College Volleyball Club will go down in history as a very memorable and successful year for the Club. Our 1st VI team won their final game against Hale School, finishing off an undefeated season and claiming the Brother Carrigg Shield for the second consecutive year. Other teams capped off a great season, with Trinity finishing on top of many of the different divisions. We are very proud of the efforts of every team and athlete who has represented the club. Along with our 1st VI team, our 2nds, 3rds, 9As, 8As and 7As also finished at the top of their respective divisions illustrating the strength throughout the age groups.
I am pleased to say the Middle School volleyball program is in a very strong position. The teams across Years 7-9 have developed a culture reflective of their Senior School mentors. This bodes tremendously well for the future of Trinity volleyball. The success of our Senior School teams has filtered down the line to our Middle School teams, which has created a winning atmosphere for the players to draw confidence. The 2014 season has been a very successful campaign across each age group, but most pleasing is the quality of depth we have within each year level. This depth is wonderful for the strength of our club, however, this can result in our Middle School teams not playing regular fixtures against the other PSA schools. A rotational playing policy was put in place to even out the amount of official games being played. At times our Middle B or C teams would fulfil the responsibilities of our Middle A team and the Years 7 and 8 teams would play against students who are not in the same year group. I commend the students on their patience and willingness to put others first for the entire club to function equitably.

Even with a different format and approach to our fixtures the Middle School teams won a vast majority of games and on several occasions managed to complete clean sweeps of the opposition. The coaching staff also initiated specialist training programs for the teams who were not playing an official fixture. This allowed our players to experience a higher level of game play and be exposed to a development pathway designed to prepare the athletes for playing Senior School volleyball.
Overall, the season was extremely pleasing and the steps Trinity volleyball took to develop our Middle School players will be a future benefit the club. Our Volleyball Club is very fortunate to have the dedicated support from several external coaches who offer a wealth of experience and knowledge. Thanks must go to Mr John Riccardi, Mr Tim Mettam (’09), Mr Sam Mettam (’10) and Mr Jack Dawes (’12) who all give up their personal time to coach a Middle School team. These external coaches complement the teaching staff who put in a tremendous amount of effort, namely Mr Brendan Chapman, Ms Claudia Kelly, Miss Elise Kukulka, Mr John Overton and Ms Beth Parkinson.
Filled with promise, the 10Bs were a varied mix of experience and raw potential. Unfortunately there was not enough schools with teams in this division and there were many scratch matches played over the season. It was very pleasing to see that certain boys were always prepared to step up and play even though the games were not official matches. Well done to all the 10Bs who trained hard in the squad and improved their skills over the season. The 10A season showed some serious talent with hitting and serving by far the best skills on display. After some drills on defensive positions and setting accuracy, the 10As became a force to be reckoned with. Led by Captain, Luke Smith, in a dual role as team libero and setter, we managed to win all games but one against Wesley, which was a closely fought game on their home court. Special mention must go to MVP Trong Nguyen and coach’s award winner, Will McDonald, for their outstanding efforts on court. Congratulations to all the boys who played in the 10As, coached by Mr Bobby Emmanuel and Mr Peter Fitzgerald (’13).
Once again our senior volleyball teams, our 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th VI teams enjoyed outstanding seasons. Not only did our 3rd and 4th VI teams experience many victories, the students developed a strong sense of camaraderie and humour under the guidance of Mrs Rosa West and Ms Rita Basilio. Mr Craig Adams and his 2nd VI team proved invincible once again and are congratulated on another undefeated season. The depth of talent and quest of individuals wishing to force their way into the 1sts team added significantly to the productive culture of the 1st and 2nd VI teams.
The members of our 1st VI used the frustration of a shared title in 2013 to motivate them towards outright honours to claim the Brother Carrigg Shield in 2014. An undefeated Term 4 2013 pre-season left many with great expectations for the 2014 season, however, star player Nick Butler (’14) was offered and accepted a full scholarship with the Australian Institute of Sport which left some big shoes to fill for the Term 1 season. Captain Brayden Keizer (12.1), and Vice-Captains, Daniel Bendotti (12.5)

I personally thank outgoing committee members Mr Craig Butler (President), and Mrs Sally Harris (Secretary) who have been long-term members of the committee and incredible supporters of Trinity volleyball. I am sure that the overwhelming success that has been exhibited on and off the court will translate into greater achievement on the court for many years to come. With the efforts of so many generous people in our community contributing to the culture of our club, I look forward to a very bright future ahead of us.
Mr Brendan Chapman Coach 1st VI Volleyball
and Matthew Murphy (12.5), deserve considerable recognition in the way they led the team on and off the court, developing a formidable presence amongst other opponents within the PSA. The team’s endeavour and commitment to fulfil their goals set early on in the preseason was testament to the calibre of the young men in this team. I would like to acknowledge the invaluable contribution made by Mr Andrew Lillywhite (’08) to the 1st VI program.
The Annual Awards Dinner marked a wonderful show of support by parents, family members, supporters and players of the Club. I would like to thank those parents, committee members, supporters and students who have given energy to the club and contributed in many ways.
