Roll Call

Mr Stephen Leahy (’78) Director of Sport

Commencing immediately after the end of the winter sport season, the number of boys attending training was, in the main, very good. With the season being only four weeks long, it was again a challenge to manage the workload placed on the athletes, particularly the multi-event boys, to ensure that they were able to make significant gains in their fitness and skills without getting injured in the process. It was a common sight to see boys standing in wheelie bins full of icy water to help with their recovery before the next training session.

With Mann Oval being unavailable due to heavy rain and subsequent flooding, the College Athletics Age Championships were once again determined based on the performances by each athlete at the Tri Meet with Hale School and Aquinas College held at the WA Athletics Stadium. From the U/13 age group through to the open age group, the age champions were Alexander Rossi (7.6), Michael Le (8.7), Samuel Throssell (9.3), Jhonny Lutula (10.4), Isaac Curtis (11.5) and Nixon Hamlet (12.3). The overall performance by the team at the Tri Meet was encouraging leading into the final week of the season with many areas of strength identified and similarly, some areas where more work needed to be done to try and gain an extra few points.

The 2014 PSA Athletics Inters resulted in the team finishing in third place. From a team perspective, highlights included the U/16 athletes scoring the most points of any school for that age group, the hurdlers (150 points)and shot putters (153 points) scoring the most points in their respective disciplines and every 1500 metre runner recording a personal best. Whilst we did not achieve our stated goal to improve on our third place from the previous year, the team significantly closed the margin between where we finished in relation to the winning school. In 2013, the team finished 270 points behind Scotch College who won the meet, but this year, only 131 points separated us from the winners, Aquinas College. This represents a significant improvement which the team needs to build on in 2015 if we are to mount a serious challenge for the Alcock Shield.

Callum Lovegrove (10.4) sets a new PSA record in the Under 16 400m

Congratulations to the following boys who all set new PSA records:

U/14 Shot Put – Liam Martin (8.5) (14.84 metres)

U/16 Hurdles – William McDonald (10.5) (14.29 seconds)

U/13 800 metres – Alexander Rossi (7.6) (2 minutes 17.8 seconds)

U/16 400 metres – Callum Lovegrove (10.4) (52.47 seconds)

U/16 4 x 100 metres relay – Rashawn Reuben (10.5), William McDonald (10.5), Tamba Lebbie (10.3), Jhonny Lutula(10.4) (45.49 seconds)

Thank you to the boys who tried out for the team, the team reserves and the boys who represented the College at the Inters and, of course, the coaches and parents who assisted. In particular, credit must be given to the Year 12 boys who have represented the College over the last six years and were involved in our last winning team back in 2010. I look forward with enthusiasm to the 2015 season.
