Boys In Groove

Picture this: 7.30am on a blustery Thursday morning, 24 boys in an empty Gibney Hall are all strutting around the space to the blaring sounds of Flume’s On Top to try and really connect with the attitude they need to pull off their first performance the next night in front of hundreds of people. Welcome to the fun that is BIG.

Auditions for a new crew were held early in Term 1. The many returning 2013 BIG members, combined with some excited new compatriots, set to work to learn and perfect the basics of break and hip-hop that would see them through to creating their final piece for the Performing Arts Festival for Catholic Schools.

Their 2014 routine, titled Play Happy: Live Happy, was a tongue in cheek performance looking at the need for boys to spend more time outside playing in the real world versus living inside in the ‘iWorld’. The attitude and swagger these young men brought to the stage absolutely delighted audiences of Trinity and the general community alike. The boys were the opening act for the Dance Drama Showcase held in Term 3 and were then lucky enough to perform on the same night as the High School crew ‘GIG’ for the Performing Arts Festival in Week 6. This evening was a huge success for the boys and many spoke of their delight in being able to watch the older boys perform to see where they could head with continued dedication to dance.

The year ended with the boys performing their routine for the College community at the Junior School Presentation Night in Gibney Hall at the end of Term 4. The parents were delighted with the performance and I was overwhelmed with positive comments on the boys’ abilities. In particular, parents were delighted to see so many of their boys showcasing their ‘signature moves’ and the pride on each boy’s face when dancing mirrored this joy.

Special thanks must go to all the parents of BIG for their dedication to the group this year, and in particular I thank Mrs Donna Wojtowicz for her efforts with sourcing costumes. Sincere appreciation must also be extended to the Junior School staff for their assistance throughout the year, and particularly Mr Martin Tucker, Ms Lisa Laurino and Miss Beth Parkinson for their help backstage. With the Year 5s and 6s for 2015 already auditioned and selected, the auditions for new Year 4s of 2015 will be held in Week 2 of Term 1 to finalise the crew. If the dedication of the 2014 group is anything to go by, it’s exciting to see where 2015 will head for Dance in the Junior School.
