Roll Call

The Junior school Gifted & Talented students had a very busy calendar in 2014. Here are some of the activities that they enjoyed.

Visiting the Sculptures by the Sea Exhibition at Cottesloe beach was a fascinating excursion, enjoyed by Years 4-6. Students had the opportunity to join the ‘Wordsculpting!: literacy through art’ program which was designed to develop students’ interpretations of a selection of sculptures in the exhibition through word games, storytelling and role play. This tour/ workshop with a Sculpture by the Sea Educator enabled students to practise and enhance their literacy and visual literacy skills. In Term 1 students from Years 4-6 participated in a cartooning workshop run by Mike Nicholas (’97), an ex-student of Trinity College. Mike is a cartoonist, illustrator, writer, graphic and web designer who now runs his own business, Run Mouse Run! We were excited to offer students the opportunity to learn from and work with Mike.

We also had success in the Academic All Stars Competition with a Year 5 Winner of the Compassion Award (for raising most funds for Compassion Australia). The Da Vinci Decathlon where our Year 6 students placed equal 6th out of 13 schools and Year 6 student Willem Lamers tied in first place for the inaugural Perth Young speakers Award.

Following our success in the State Clued Up Kids Competition which is organised by the Francis Burt Law Education Centre, our Year 6 Team went on to be the Inaugural Interstate Competition winners! A great achievement culminating in a trophy presentation by Ms Elizabeth Needham at the Junior School Presentation Night. Well done boys!

One of the highlights of the Junior Gifted and Talented Calendar is the Year 6 Evening of Eminence. Each student selects an eminent person to study and the project culminates in a special evening where students dress as their eminent character and parents attend and ask them questions. Themed food is also part of the evening and the results are impressive. Thank you to all parents who supported this wonderful evening.
