Yvonne Fedderson
By Bill Dougherty
Childhelp founder Yvonne Fedderson has died. As many of you long-time Valley residents are aware, I have known the Fedderson and Brophy families all of my life. Yvonne lived a long and very prosperous life.
In the late 1950s, my father knew famed United States Marine Corps General Lewis Walt. General Walt had started working with Yvonne and her friend Sara O’Meara. Both women met whilst working as actresses in television, became roommates, and had entertained troops through the USO. After discovering abandoned children during a USO tour in Japan, Yvonne and Sara turned their efforts into raising money to build orphanages and founded International Orphans in 1959.
Following the Korean War, there was a tremendous number of orphans, many who had been abandoned due to their American GI mixed-race background. The two ladies, with the help of General Walt, my father, and countless other Marine Corps officers started a baby lift out of Korea.
By the time of the Vietnam war, my father was doing extensive legal work for Pan American World Airways. When the war ended, the ladies were faced with a repeat situation of Korea. Again, General Walt, along with my father as well as other officers and service organizations, came to the rescue. This time there would be countless baby lifts using Pan Am along with other US carriers.
Once Vietnam became a painful but distant memory, the two ladies began to focus their attention on child abuse. International Orphans became Childhelp USA and then Childhelp. Yvonne and Sara approached this horrific subject when no one spoke of or wanted to touch it. Yvonne was married to famed television producer Don Fedderson, and the two enlisted the help of countless celebrities to back their mission. The rest is history.
Yvonne did great things in her life. Her gentle approach to difficult subjects, such as illegitimate children of war-torn countries and child abuse, made her an icon. For someone that never had the need to work a day in her life, she worked round the clock for charity. Though Childhelp will continue without her, Yvonne leaves an even more impressive and lasting legacy. The efforts she put forward were simply amazing. She will be missed by so many.

A beautiful woman with sapphire blue eyes sits alone at a luncheon. She is impeccably dressed and exceptionally bejeweled. Several nights later, she is spotted again at a cocktail party at the Phoenix Art Museum. My wife and I introduce ourselves. She tells us she has just moved from Omaha and knows no one. Her name is Sue Fletcher. Several weeks ago, she lost a long and brave battle with cancer.
When Sue Fletcher arrived on the social scene in the mid-2000s, she literally took the social community by storm. Those introduced to her quickly realized this was not her first rodeo. Although recently widowed, Sue found a new home in the Valley. Her quiet elegance, combined with her soft-spoken demeanor, quickly opened doors for her wherever she went.
Sue was also one of the funniest people I have ever met. This wit, combined with wealth, beauty, and exceptional intelligence, quickly put Sue at the top of every charitable organization’s list. Her contributions to the Phoenix Art Museum, Barrow, HonorHealth, the Phoenix Heart Ball and on and on and on. Everything she touched turned to gold. I had the privilege of working with Sue for three years on the Trends Charitable Fund board. She was smart and always had solutions for any concerns or ideas presented to us. We would also laugh ourselves into oblivion!
Sue was one of a handful of people that still entertained in her home. We were fortunate enough to attend her lavish dinners and Christmas parties. All this was done under the watchful eye of famed event planner George Abrams. They will always be some of my fondest memories.
Shortly before her death, my wife and I sent a holiday arrangement to Sue. She texted us and said, “I have the two of you to thank for everything you did for me.” Truthfully, she would have done everything anyway without our introductions.
Sue Fletcher was an iconic visionary, travel companion, hostess, and a very diligent worker. She will be missed far more than I can ever express.
LA DOLCE VITA
By Bill Dougherty
The Season October to June
People are talking about hostage situations in high society. Recently, I had the displeasure of experiencing two in a row. Both were kick-offs for organizations that always draw a fashionable and extremely hardworking group of ladies and gentlemen. At the first cocktail party, the incoming chairs spoke for more than 45 minutes. The majority of guests were standing. Then, the two turned the mic over to two more speakers, who, after talking individually for 30 minutes apiece, decided to open the floor to a question-and-answer session. The almost identical reception was repeated several days later at another
beautiful home in Paradise Valley. I wanted to gouge my eyes out with the stir sticks on the bar! Dear God!
As the late great Superintendent of Public Instruction and internationally famed public speaker Carolyn Warner once said, “You only speak for two to seven minutes, after then you lose your audience.” You get the picture.
RYAN HOUSE 2025 WHITE CHRISTMAS GALA
Shortly before Christmas, Ryan House held its much-anticipated gala. The Arizona Biltmore did not disappoint and served as the perfect place to host this event. After all, the Irving Berlin song “White Christmas” was rumored to have been written at the posh resort! Champagne flowed as guests dressed to the tens sampled hors d’oeuvres before dining and dancing the night away. Proceeds for the
night served to benefit the fine children with life-limiting conditions (and their families) through physical, emotional, social and spiritual wellness care. It was a beautiful evening. Amanda Carr stole the show in holiday gold to the floor. Rob Guthrie was the most dapper man in the room.

Honor Ball – Making a Difference
Each year, the Honor Ball hosted by HonorHealth Foundation attracts the Valley’s most generous and supportive community leaders who understand that philanthropy is central to innovation, advanced technology and vital programs and services in healthcare today. This season, Trends Magazine is pleased to spotlight Murray and Ina Manaster, honorees of the 49th Honor Ball exemplify that spirit – philanthropists and leaders whose influence extends far beyond elegant galas and boardrooms, leaving a lasting imprint on healthcare and lives throughout the Valley.
What does being named an Honor Ball Honoree mean to you?
“Our commitment to HonorHealth –both as a member of the Foundation Board and as a co-founder of the Women’s Board – was never for accolades,” Ina says. “It was about contributing to an organization we care deeply about. Being recognized implies that we succeeded in making a difference to HonorHealth and the people it serves.”
What impact are you proud of, and how do you hope to inspire the next generation?
“We are extraordinarily proud to have been part of the enormous growth of this healthcare system,” Murray says. “Working with remarkable people and sharing the impact of HonorHealth physicians, nurses and staff with others in the community gives us incredible fulfillment.”
Ina adds, “Frankly, we don’t measure accomplishments. We just keep doing what we believe is the right thing to do. Our legacy is mentoring the next generation –and many in our own generation – about the personal rewards of philanthropy and helping others. It’s a joy to know people are being helped, treated with dignity and compassion, and to see innovations that will save lives.”
Who shaped your desire to serve or lead in such a significant way?
“Murray’s mother suffered from multiple sclerosis since he was born,” Ina shares. “Helping her – and others – was a natural part of his life. He is, by nature, a generous person, always doing his best to make life more pleasant for others.”
Murray adds, “Both of us spent most of our lives immersed in our careers, but we knew there was another agenda. What is the point of accumulating wealth if none of it benefits those who need a helping hand?”
What has inspired your community stewardship?
“We started visiting Phoenix in the late ’70s,” Ina recalls. “As Chicagoans, we found the city young and vibrant, with a bright future. Beyond the climate and beauty, we discovered people who were warm and giving. We were overwhelmed by the level of philanthropy that pervaded the city. It’s people helping people. While we hopefully do our part, the community clearly emphasizes the need to reach out and help others.”
What moment connected you personally to the mission of HonorHealth?
“Murray’s involvement with the Foundation Board brought home the commitment to quality healthcare offered by HonorHealth – at that time, Scottsdale Healthcare,” Ina says. “While it wasn’t a single moment, we learned how the mission and philanthropy changed lives and strengthens the community. We’ve seen friends helped in life-changing and lifesaving ways.”
Murray adds, “Healthcare is at a crossroads, yet HonorHealth navigates an ever-changing landscape – new regulations, staffing issues, cost containment – all while fulfilling its mission. Despite obstacles, HonorHealth continues delivering advances in medicine and treatments in an exemplary manner.”
What advice would you give to someone hoping to make a meaningful impact?
“Our advice to those considering making a philanthropic gift is simple: do it,” Murray says. “The personal impact is life changing. There are so many individuals in the Phoenix metro area who are generous and anxious to help. We do what we do because the causes we pick are meaningful to us. Philanthropy is personal.”
If you could thank people who helped shape your journey, who would it be and why?
“We both thank our families for teaching us that giving is essential,” Ina says. “We were taught that no matter the size of the gift, it will have a positive impact.”
What gives you optimism about the road ahead?
“The inherent goodness in people keeps us optimistic,” Murray shares. “We don’t attempt to be models, but we do our best to improve lives. If others like what we do, let’s hope they emulate us.”
Ina adds, “We chose the HonorHealth Innovation Endowment as the recipient of this year’s Honor Ball proceeds. To us, it represents the future of medicine –and how it will prolong lives in the most positive way.”

BALLET ARIZONA DANCE WITH ME 2026
The Arizona Biltmore opened its lavish doors early in January, just as the 2026 social season started. This year, Carla Cohen chaired the bash, while Joan and Charlie Berry were honored. Cocktails started the night off right. Partygoers were then treated to an exceptional performance of ALICE (in Wonderland). Everyone swooned! Dinner and dancing followed around 8pm. The gala was festive and fun as always. Jenny Holsman Tetreault looked smashing in shades of maroon. Linda Herold blew it up in festive shades of yellow and red. What a lovely evening!

Legacy Luncheon Honoring the Legacy of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor
What is the Legacy Luncheon?
DeeDee: Presented by the Ladies of the Court, who serve as the board of the Sandra Day O’Connor Institute for American Democracy, the Legacy Luncheon honors the life and work of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, whilst raising funds for the Institute’s educational programs.
What would you like people to know about the O’Connor Institute?
DeeDee: Justice O’Connor believed that a strong democracy depends on strong civics education. She championed efforts to help young people understand how government works and how they shape our nation’s future.
Jill: The vision of the O’Connor Institute is to create a nation where important policy decisions are made through a process of critical analysis and informed participation of all citizens, and the Institute helps teach people how to accomplish that in a nonpartisan way.
What programs benefit from the Luncheon?
Jill: Proceeds allow the Institute to continue its mission, which means investing in an informed, engaged, and respectful citizenry. Funding will help to provide free educational content, student programs, adult courses, forums for civil discussion, research on civics education, and hands-on experiences that build civic knowledge and engagement for people of all ages.
DeeDee: Some of the free educational programs the Institute supports are Camp O’Connor for 7th and 8th graders, Civics for Life…an online platform for multigenerational civics education, Civics Challenge…an online competition for 6th through 12th graders that include essays, videos and original songs.
Visit OConnorInstitute.org to learn more.
What motivated you to co-chair the Legacy Luncheon?
Jill: DeeDee and I are board members of the Ladies of the Court – a dynamic group of ladies. When we were asked to chair it, we believed in the mission of the Institute so much that we agreed to do it. It is nice to do something great for the community with one of my best friends!
DeeDee: I’ve always been fascinated by our first ladies and their impact on our country. This year’s speaker is Anita McBride, a White House historian and author who writes extensively about the history, evolving roles, and legacies of U.S. first ladies. And I am honored to co-chair this event with one of my dearest friends, Jill Krigsten.
Why is the Sandra Day O’Connor Institute’s Ladies of the Court special to you?
DeeDee: Justice O’Connor believed that a strong democracy depended on strong civics education. I don’t think there is enough civics education in our schools, and this organization gives students hands-on experience.
Jill: I’m involved because the Institute’s mission is more important than
ever- advancing American democracy through civics education, civil discourse, and civic engagement.
What inspired the theme and why this year is so special?
Jill: The theme was inspired by the 250th anniversary of the United States, a milestone calling us to honor its past and future. This year’s luncheon will have a strong patriotic spirit, reflected in our featured speaker, Anita McBride. Her message of leadership and service is especially meaningful this year, and each guest will receive signed copies of two of her acclaimed books.
DeeDee: With 2026 marking a very special time in our nation’s history, our speaker Anita McBride, with her White House insights and knowledge, was the perfect choice. As Chief of Staff to First Lady Laura Bush, she directed the first lady’s work on a wide range of domestic initiatives including education reform, literacy, women’s health, historic preservation, promotion of the arts, and stewardship of our national parks.

Florentine Baroque: Haukohl Collection
What makes The pARTy in the Garden and The afterpARTy such an important annual fundraiser for Phoenix Art Museum, and how does the support generated through this event impact the Museum year-round?
The pARTy in the Garden and The afterpARTy are Phoenix Art Museum’s most important annual fundraisers, generating critical support for exhibitions, education, and operations. Together, they raise more than $1 million each year, sustaining the Museum’s mission and expanding access to world-class art.
This year’s gala celebrates Florentine Baroque: The Haukohl Collection. Why is this exhibition such a milestone moment for the Museum and for the Phoenix arts community?
Florentine Baroque: The Haukohl Collection represents a major milestone for Phoenix Art Museum and the region’s cultural landscape. As the first exhibition of its kind in Arizona, it brings rare 17th- and 18th-century Florentine works – many seldom seen outside Italy – to Phoenix. The exhibition elevates the Museum’s national profile while deepening public engagement through art, history and scholarship.
Guests will enjoy an exclusive viewing of the exhibition during the gala. How does connecting philanthropy with oncein-a-lifetime art experiences elevate the impact of events like The pARTy in the Garden?
Pairing philanthropy with once-in-a-lifetime art experiences makes giving deeply personal and memorable. An exclusive viewing during The pARTy in the Garden allows guests to connect with extraordinary works while directly supporting the Museum’s future. It turns generosity into impact, showing how each contribution helps sustain world-class art in Phoenix.
This year’s pARTy in the Garden will honor Mike and Lee Cohn for their longstanding support of Phoenix Art Museum. Can you share more about their legacy and the significance of the Sette/Cohn Artist Award to Arizona’s creative community?
Mike and Lee Cohn are being honored for their long-standing dedication to Phoenix Art Museum and Arizona’s creative community. Their philanthropy reflects a deep commitment to supporting artists and strengthening the cultural fabric of the region. Through initiatives like the Sette/Cohn Artist Award, they continue to invest in the future of Arizona’s art scene. The event brings together more than 400 community, civic and arts leaders. Why is community engagement such a critical part of the Museum’s mission, and how does this gala help strengthen those connections?
Community engagement is central to Phoenix Art Museum’s mission because art is meant to be shared. The pARTy in the Garden brings together community and civic leaders in support of culture, creativity and access. The evening strengthens connections and reinforces the Museum’s role as a vital community hub.
This year’s gala is chaired by Catherine and Jim Tuton and Matthew Boland and Chris Greulich. How have their leadership and vision helped shape the event, and why is chair support so essential to the success of the Museum’s largest annual fundraiser?
The leadership of Matthew Boland and Chris Greulich, alongside Catherine and Jim Tuton, has shaped this year’s gala with intention, elegance, and purpose. Their vision ensures the evening reflects the Museum’s mission while inspiring confidence in its future. With strong community support, The pARTy in the Garden becomes more than a celebration – it becomes a catalyst for meaningful philanthropic impact.
Proceeds from the event support not only exhibitions and education, but also the Museum’s free-access days. Why is accessibility such a core value for Phoenix Art Museum, and what does that mean for the community?
By supporting free-access days, the Museum removes financial barriers and welcomes students, families and first-time visitors. This commitment ensures the Museum remains a true community resource where everyone can feel inspired and included.
The afterpARTy has become a destination in its own right, particularly for young professionals and creatives. How does this late-night celebration help broaden the Museum’s reach and attract new audiences?
By blending art, music and community, The afterpARTy introduces new audiences to the Museum in a way that feels modern and welcoming. For many, it serves as the first step in building a lasting connection to the Museum and its mission.

Property Management –Long-term Success
Can you share an overview of Diversified Partners’ approach to property management and how it supports the long-term success of the company’s developments?
Diversified Partners takes a hands-on, relationship-driven approach to property management that supports both immediate performance and long-term asset value. Our team stays closely involved with owners and tenants to ensure properties are well-maintained, operationally efficient and positioned for long-term stability. By prioritizing communication, proactive problem-solving and consistency across our portfolio, we help create environments where tenants can succeed and assets can perform at a high level over time.
What role do you personally play in overseeing the property management side of Diversified Partners, and how has your involvement evolved over time?
I’ve been actively involved in overseeing Diversified Partners’ property management division for more than 20 years, working closely with owners, clients and tenants. My role has evolved alongside the company, from managing day-to-day operations firsthand to leading and expanding a growing team as our portfolio and client base have grown. That long-term involvement allows me to stay connected to both the operational details and the bigger-picture strategy.
How does Diversified Partners’ property management strategy differ from more traditional models, particularly when it comes to tenant relationships and asset longevity? Diversified Partners operates with a boutique, hands-on approach rather than a large, corporate model. Our property managers maintain direct, consistent relationships with both tenants and owners,
allowing us to be more proactive and responsive. That level of engagement has proven effective in supporting tenant retention and long-term portfolio stability, which is reflected in the strength and consistency of our assets.
What are some of the biggest challenges in property management today, and how is Diversified Partners proactively addressing them?
Two of the biggest challenges in property management today are tenant longevity and regulatory compliance. At Diversified Partners, our property managers are trained and encouraged to communicate regularly with tenants and owners –typically one to two times per month, or more as needed. This consistent engagement allows us to address issues early, stay ahead of compliance requirements and build stronger, longerlasting tenant relationships.
How do you balance operational efficiency with creating positive, highquality experiences for tenants and across DP-managed properties? It comes down to staying connected. We focus on understanding the needs and priorities of both tenants and owners and maintaining open, transparent communication. That balance allows us to operate efficiently while also delivering a high-quality experience that builds trust and long-term partnerships.
In what ways does hands-on property management influence decisions made during the development and leasing phases of a project?
Because our property management team is involved throughout the lifecycle of a project, they bring valuable insight into both development and leasing decisions. They see firsthand what contributes to tenant success and where challenges can arise, and they can
provide guidance on building costs, common area maintenance considerations and operational efficiencies. That realworld perspective helps inform smarter, more sustainable decisions early on.
Are there any recent initiatives or improvements within Diversified Partners’ property management operations that you are particularly proud of, and how do you see this function shaping the company’s future growth?
Over the past two years, we’ve grown our property management team from one manager to three, driven by the conversion of our developments into managed assets and the addition of new third-party clients. We anticipate continued growth and expect to add another property management position by the third quarter of 2026. As the company continues to expand, property management will remain a key driver of Diversified Partners’ reputation, supporting asset performance, tenant satisfaction and long-term value across our portfolio.

LEXIE’S RANCH AND DOMINICK’S STEAKHOUSE
A small group of people gathered in Scottsdale in early January. Those selected received a private tour of Lexie’s Ranch, a therapeutic ranch program created to support individuals with autism and developmental disabilities.
The ranch offers a private sanctuary where participants are free to swim, ride horseback, play games, and do many other educational activities. The organization also includes Charlie’s Treehouse, a day
program which offers ongoing support for adults 18+. The genius idea of Andrea and Brad Robertson, the Lexie’s Ranch is sure to attract national and international attention for the services offered.
Afterwards, the guests were treated to a four-course dinner at Dominick’s Steak House in Scottsdale. There, a great deal of needed funds was raised for Lexie’s Ranch. It was a brilliant afternoon and evening.

Helping Families Stay Together
Can you share more about the shift AAWL has made to pet families in our community?
While our roots are in animal rescue and adoption, we’ve evolved into a community-centered organization that focuses on supporting both pets and the families who love them. We believe that no one should have to give up a beloved pet simply because of financial hardship. Over the past four years, we’ve worked closely with community members to co-create programs that provide:
• Low-cost veterinary care through our on-site Community Vet Clinic and our Mobile Community Vet Clinic
• Community outreach – providing pet resources (such as pet food) and pet care information to local families
• Behavior training and support
Why is this shift to focus to prevention so important?
Our goal is to help families stay together and reduce the number of pets entering the shelter system. One of the top reasons pets are brought to a shelter is because of unexpected medical emergencies and the expense that comes with it. Emergencies that often could have been avoided with consistent, preventive wellness and vaccines. AAWL has had the opportunity to connect with so many different pet owners in our community. What have you found are the biggest needs?
In partnership with PetSmart Charities, we spent two years surveying 700 pet owners (primarily Spanish-speaking) living in the zip codes near AAWL. They told us – in overwhelming numbers - that they need access to low-cost wellness/ preventative care. We also learned that Spanish-speaking pet families in Central City Phoenix struggle to find veterinary care that is sensitive to their language and culture.
What is AAWL doing to address these needs?
We have transitioned to low-cost preventative wellness model at our Community Vet Clinic to focus on vaccines, preventative treatments, nail trims, among other wellness services.
And not only have we prioritized hiring bilingual team members, but to address the shortage of bilingual veterinarians, AAWL has partnered with the McS Charitable Foundation to launch a program to recruit and mentor Spanish-speaking vets to help us better serve our Spanish-speaking pet families.
One of the communities you serve is East Maryvale, which is known as a “veterinary desert”, can you share more about what that means and what AAWL is doing to support pet families in these veterinary deserts?
Thousands of pet families in communities around Phoenix live in what is considered a veterinary desert, where access to vet care is difficult and access to affordable care is nearly impossible. This is why AAWL is focused on bringing essential services and resources directly to these neighborhoods, like East Maryvale, at affordable costs.
What services are you bringing to these neighborhoods?
Earlier this year, we launched our Mobile Veterinary Clinic in East Maryvale and have been hosting a monthly vaccine clinic in partnership with Isaac School District.
The need is so high that even without any advertising, the number of pet families we served doubled from our first clinic to our second one.
As of October, we have been able to serve over 2,600 pets between our mobile and on-site community clinics.
How do you plan to expand support for pet families in these neighborhoods soon?

'The Fairy Godmother of Fashion' and 'The Boob Whisperer'
9 out of 10 women are wearing the WRONG size bra.
8 out of 10 don’t know how to put it on.
• This creates pain in your neck muscles
• Puts pressure on your organs
• Makes your back hurt
• Gives you bad posture
• makes your clothes not fit properly
• and the worst part as if that isn’t enough … IT MAKES YOU LOOK FAT!!!!
I do a FREE BRA FITTING, and in 5 minutes I make you look as if you lost 10 pounds.
I’ll show you how to put it on, how to wear it, and if we don’t have your size we order it.
We don’t give you “the sister size” as they call it.
If you are tired of having your boobs everywhere except where they should be on your body, call the ‘The Boob Whisperer’. ‘The Boob Whisperer’
MEN, we are NOT afraid of your suit alterations! We do it ALL and do it BEST!
Profile – Veronica Beard
How did you know you wanted to design for women?
VMB: I worked with all men in finance and was the only one in my office who cared about fashion. Showing up in something feminine and unexpected made me realize the power of feeling well-dressed – how it shifts the way you move through your day. I wanted to create that feeling for other women.
VSB: For me, it started by noticing a gap. Veronica and I were always talking about fashion – what we loved, what was missing, and what we actually wanted to wear. We realized that what women needed were pieces that were chic, effortless, and made for real life. Once we realized we could create that for them, everything clicked.
Who inspired your brand, Veronica Beard?
VSB: We’re inspired by the modern woman whose days and life are full. She’s multifaceted and multitasking – often a boss, traveler, and a mom all at once. We think about her in everything we do: what she needs, how she moves through her day, and how her wardrobe can keep up with her.
VMB: We design for women like us – busy, fashion-minded, and intentional. She wants styles that translate to real life, which is how our modern uniform was born – starting with our dickey jacket and evolving with details like interchangeable collars coming next season.
What do you consider your finest hour professionally?
VSB: Surpassing $7 million in donations through VB Gives Back is a moment I’ll always be proud of. It proves how powerful fashion can be when it’s driven by purpose.
VMB: Every time I see our clothes out in the wild. Seeing how women connect with the brand and make the pieces their own –there’s no greater feeling of success.
If you could live in one place outside of NYC, where would that be?
VSB: London or Paris.
VMB: For me, it’s New York or nowhere. I love to travel, but there’s truly no place like NYC – it’s home.
Tell us what your next big adventure is?
VMB: Opening our first store in Paris in 2026! Expanding internationally has been one of our most exciting challenges yet –really understanding each market, from how women dress to how they shop.
VSB: And Paris is only the beginning – I can’t wait to continue taking the brand to new places globally. Each new city pushes us to listen, learn, and adapt, and understanding how VB fits into women’s lives around the world continues to inspire us.
What are your favorite designers and design style?
VSB: I love things that are cool, classic, and chic. My style leans into classic American dressing – great denim, perfectly cut blazers, easy shirts, sleek stilettos, and gold jewelry. I’m also a huge vintage shopper, whether it’s clothing, furniture, or objects. I love bringing those references into how I get dressed – mixing the old with the new.
VMB: I’m drawn to the ’70s, ’80s, and the ’90s supermodel era – each with its own sense of effortlessness and unapologetic glamour. I gravitate toward texture, color, and pieces with a modern edge. I love preppy but edgy, cool but classic, borrowed from the men but sexy! I’m not afraid to take risks, whether that’s mixing prints, adding something sparkly, or letting one standout piece anchor the look.
If you could design for one person, who would it be?
VMB: Any of the original ‘90s supermodels.
VSB: Carolyn Bessette Kennedy.
What three people living or dead would you invite to your dinner party?
VSB: Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, Jane Birkin, and Talitha Getty –the ultimate cool girls.
VMB: Priscilla Presley, Grace Kelly, and Bianca Jagger. Absolute icons, and you know they’d have the best stories.

WHERE STYLE MEETS THE SADDLE: EQUESTRIAN VIBES IN FASHION
Across runways and street style alike, equestrian-inspired fashion is having a moment. Classic riding boots, tailored jackets, rich leather accents, and heritage accessories are flowing into mainstream trends, offering a nod to both functionality and timeless elegance.
Designers are revisiting countryside classics – think tailored jodhpurs, sleek equestrian boots, plaid layering, and barn-to-city outerwear – that translate seamlessly from stable to sidewalk. These trends reflect a broader appreciation for craftsmanship and rustic sophistication that evokes the same refined spirit celebrated at WestWorld’s horse shows. Whether it’s a chic blazer with tall boots for show day or subtle horse-bit hardware in handbags and belts, equestrian flair is influencing wardrobes everywhere. Arizona has a special love for the cowboy, and the cowboy hats are back in a big way including many fun shops here in Scottsdale to design your very own custom hat. This aesthetic celebrates movement, tradition, and understated luxury – perfect for Arizona’s vibrant social calendar.
THE AMERICAN DREAM: EQUESTRIAN ESTATE LIVING IN SCOTTSDALE
The equestrian lifestyle extends far beyond the show ring – into everyday life through Scottsdale’s luxury equestrian estates and horse-friendly real estate. For many, owning a property that blends comfortable living with the ability to keep and ride horses is the ultimate expression of the American Dream.
From sprawling ranch-style homes with custom barns and riding facilities to estates with panoramic desert views and private arenas, Scottsdale’s equestrian market offers options for lovers of the outdoors and horse enthusiasts alike. Homes with stables, acreage, and sophisticated interior spaces are increasingly sought-after, with properties ranging from modest equestrian setups to multimillion-dollar estates with every amenity imaginable, horse owners and hobby riders are creating vibrant communities where open space, lifestyle, and luxury intersect. Owning land with room for horses – complete with tack rooms, wash racks, and more – remains a cherished reality for those drawn to this lifestyle.

BARROW GRAND BALL 2026
Bravo! Founded in 1965, the Women’s Board of Barrow Neurological Foundation throws a lovely charity ball on a crisp winter’s night each January. This year was another spectacular affair. Women’s Board Chairman Katie Mueller, with ball chairs Sydney Fox and Betsy Moore, made sure everything from start to finish was impeccable! A dazzling array of guests arrived to trays of champagne and a lovely selection of hors d’oeuvres during an opulent cocktail reception. Later, the group moved from the Gold Room of the Arizona Biltmore
Resort to the famed Conference Center. There, dinner and dancing commenced. A great amount of needed funds was raised for Barrow Neurological Institute, which we are so fortunate to have in the Valley. Sandy Magruder, Julie Kroot, Kate Groves, Nancy Spetzler and Erin Gogolak stole the show. The five beautiful ladies looked stunning. David Cantor was the most dapper gentleman there, handsome in a velvet tuxedo jacket. What a night!

The Way You Look Tonight
By Bob Stearnes, Epicurean
My Mom always said I was born a generation too late. I was born in the sixties, raised in the seventies and while the Beatles and Led Zeppelin were the songs of the day our home was filled with the sounds of Sinatra, Etta James and Nat King Cole. An homage to the class of the fifties and songs that told sweet stories of love and respect all to the cool sounds of big band vibes. Likewise, food, as inspirational as music, can also be categorized in this same genre. Food, really good food, is as relatable as music to my memories and I can reflect on many of the fabulous meals I’ve had to songs you somehow know all the words to decades later. Music is art and cuisine is definitely art and when the two come together then you have a match made in Heaven. Welcome BACK to Durants.
Born over seven decades ago and beautifully reinvented by brothers Jeff and Mike Mastro of Prime Steak Concepts, the genius behind Steak 44, Ocean 44 and Dominicks Steakhouse. Durants harkins back to a golden age of class and sophistication. Still entering through the kitchen you are instantly greeted by the multitude of staff from chefs to wait staff and everyone in between. You feel a bit like royalty as you are escorted to lavish tables and neatly dressed staff in red tuxedo coats and meticulous service. The upscale menu has kept the classics and upgraded many features including caviar service.
We began with exquisite martinis and freshly baked bread. Appetizers of whimsical fried deviled eggs and a melange of fresh oysters were served with an array of toppings. Narrowing down the menu is a task indeed however we narrowed it down to an impossibly delicious branzino with sweet perfectly seared scallops. Expertly prepared medium rare filet mignon was paired with a decadent lobster thermador. I had to close my eyes and savor every bite. Dessert, oh my the desserts. We were served an 11 layer chocolate cake with chocolate mascarpone mousse with marinated chambord
blackberries. A homemade whipped sweet cream strawberry shortcake was next and sinfully indulgent.
Calling Durants a restaurant is like calling the Mona Lisa a painting. They are both other worldly. An experience, a memory, a dream come true. Stepping into its hallowed walls is like stepping back in time and transporting yourself into a different era. A time that had a different type of class and sophistication. Those who mourned its closing will celebrate its reopening as the memories you cherished
the most are still represented and many of the most iconic features are actually improved. Make your reservations quickly as they are weeks out with the buzz. I personally cannot wait to return. Wait a minute, is that Frank and Sammy?

When Women Ran Fifth Avenue
By Julie Satow
Back in the late 1940s and early 1950s and the pinnacle of American 1950’s glamour, it was not men who ran department and specialty store, it was women. They were swimming their way through a male-dominated everything. Hortense Odlum, Dorothy Shaver and Geraldine Stutz all made their marks. Together this coalition of ladies, and dozens more just like them that followed, changed retail forever. Women had an eye for detail that was mostly overlooked by their male counterparts. Nine times out of ten, every time a woman replaced a man in management, the store in question doubled their sales. These ladies just seemed to have a natural sense for spotting trends. The women installed electric atomizers that dispensed the latest perfume throughout their stores and set up various in-store boutiques, hair salons, tea rooms, restaurants and smoking libraries for men. They had the ability to trap a shopper for an entire day.
This book is a great read and a lesson in female equality. It proved long before the Women’s Movement that ladies could outsmart their harshest critics. These women truly changed the face of retail as we know it and became the faces of worldwide trends.

Mr. Pikes
By Tony Pike and Matt Trollope
Long before Ian Schrager gained popularity with his famed Morgans Hotel Group, there was Tony Pike. Enter a successful English-born Australian national. Although he claims to have once been a model, Mr. Pike looks more like Gabe Kaplan from television’s Welcome Back Kotter. Anyway, Mr. Pike stumbled upon Ibiza and set up shop with no hotel experience. There he created Pikes, the first-ever boutique hotel. He quickly the gathered the rich and famous of the roaring 1980s to his luxurious but small property. The rest is history.
Mr. Pikes is not for the faint of heart. The autobiography is graphic and very much uncensored. It’s a trip down memory lane, before cell phones and social media destroyed everything. His concept was brilliant and his lifestyle made Hugh Hefner look like a schoolboy. A great read.
