PHOENIX HEART BALL 2025

Congrats to Dr. Nelson BY PHOENIX MAGAZINE

Matthew E. Nelson, DDS

ARIZONA HUMANE SOCIETY

PETS OF THE MONTH

Sammy – 825649

Rescued as a sick stray in late August, Sammy is a handsome three-yearold Alaskan Husky who is a perfect example of the more than 24,000 pets cared for by the Arizona Humane Society each year. Although his history is a bit of a mystery, the light eyed pup is now comfortable and safe as he awaits his new family. After being rescued, Sammy was treated in the shelter’s Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital for stomach issues for a few weeks. Thanks to a few specialized medications and a lot of TLC, the spirited canine loves to show off his adorable quirks.

Sammy, like most huskies, is extremely smart and energetic –leading him to needing lots of playtime, mental stimulation and a secure yard. A true gentleman while undergoing care, the sweet boy has shown to allow all handling (even when feeling ill) and is a great walker who loves to display his paw-some leash skills.

Interested adopters can meet sweet Sammy at AHS’ Sunnyslope Campus location. Sammy’s adoption fee is $125 and includes his neuter surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip, and a follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital. To see all of AHS’ adoptable pets, visit azhumane.org/adopt for more information.

Belle – 819887

As beautiful as here name would suggest, Belle is a gorgeous one-year-old gray domestic shorthair who is looking for her purrrfect forever home at the Arizona Humane Society. Along with more than a dozen other cats and kittens, this lovely girl was rescued in July of this year from hoarding conditions after her previous family moved out and abandoned the animals in the home.

While she was understandably fearful and shy at first, Belle has emerged out of her shell as she slowly learns to trust people. While she used to hide from Arizona Humane Society workers and volunteers, she now playfully engages with people, welcomes pets and will rub against your legs to let you know she would like more attention.

Interested adopters can meet beautiful Belle at AHS’ Papago Park Campus location. Belle’s adoption fee is $60 and includes her spay surgery, current vaccinations, a microchip, and a follow-up wellness exam with a VCA Animal Hospital. To see all of AHS’ adoptable pets, visit azhumane.org/adopt for more information.

Andrea Tyler Evans

Over the course of the long hot summer, the community learned of the passing of Andrea Tyler Evans. She lost her long and very brave battle with cancer. Andrea was the second publisher of Frontdoors Magazine, and in her time there she took the publication to new heights.

More than 20 years ago, I was introduced to Andrea by my wife, Beth McRae. The two had been classmates in Valley Leadership. Afterwords, Andrea secured various positions with communityrelated organizations. She would go on to be a very prominent figure in the American Heart Association.

Later, she would purchase Frontdoors Media and The Red Book directory and put her own spin on both, changing the two in great ways.

Andrea was honored constantly for her ongoing belief that an individual or organization could make a difference and have an impact on the community. Together with her husband Tom and friend Fernanda Santos Saucier, she founded The Sauce Foundation. The foundation served to benefit victims of cancer and the vast avenues of research through various organizations in our Valley.

She was also a huge supporter of Valley Youth Theater, Dancing with the Stars Arizona, and Phoenix Heart Ball. But these were just a few of the countless organizations to which she lent her talents. Andrea Evans battled cancer for more than 13 years. And throughout this period, she always maintained a sense of decorum and style, though she was being put through grueling trials. She was an excellent wife and mother and exposed her children to the philanthropic world from young ages.

Our community has lost a great and steadfast leader and volunteer. But rather than mourn her passing at so young an age, it is best to remember the incredible things she did to make the world around her a better place.

LA DOLCE VITA

The Season October to June

Online social calendar: www.trendspublishing.com/social-calendar

Welcome back!

People are talking about the Phoenix Heart Ball. The event, which is the second oldest in the state after The Board of Visitors, officially kicks off the social season on November 22nd at The Phoenician. This year the season will be even bigger than last year and a tremendous amount of needed funds will be raised to make the Valley a far better place for many. Pat Watts, this year’s ball chairman has done an outstanding job in her orchestration of the Phoenix Heart Ball. This is the Mount Everest of charity balls in our community. Since everything

GOTCHA ...

changes each year, the committee is basically started from scratch each time. You get the picture. BTW, the Phoenix Heart Ball is also the only ball in conjunction with the American Heart Association which is entirely run by women. In other states, men serve as chairman, committee members and advisors. More power to Ms. Watts and her fine committee. Sock it to them ladies!

Two beautiful event chairs who have done everything under the sun, combined with two very seasoned event professionals, came together for a kids-related gala. They sell out The Phoenician. Champagne flows all night. More funds are raised than ever before. And a much-adored socialite is finally honored for her tireless efforts. It was a brilliant affair. But at their recap meeting, the four are told their services will not be needed in 2026, although the chairs were volunteers who did 90% of the fundraising for the Gala and broke all records. The hostile development director and special events staff member, who both clearly didn’t get to go to their senior prom, were evidently jealous and envious of the hugely successful quartet. You might remember what happened at the Phoenix Art Museum before the arrival of Jeremy Mikolajczak. You get back what you put out. How Sad.

We’re a thriving community that’s all about fun. Enjoy monthly happy hours, local hikes, cooking classes, and thrilling excursions. Come, check us out! You’ll have a blast trying new things filled with endless possibilities!

UNLOCK ARIZONA

with The Karas Group

Meet Dr. Shockwave. This man will change your life!

I’m an experienced chiropractor, serving the greater Phoenix area for over 30 years, and an owner at Apple Chiropractic where we specialize in dry needling, whiplash rehabilitation, and shockwave therapy (ESWT).

I’ve always had immense interest in health and wellness, and went on to study kinesiology, receiving my degree in 1987 from the University of Arizona.

In 2023, I was training in Krav Maga with my son Harrison and had a severe shoulder injury. The MRI showed a SLAP tear, where the biceps tendon attaches to cartilage near the top of the shoulder socket. My

surgeon told me it was a minor surgery, but with a 6 to 7-month physical therapy recovery.

I was introduced to Shockwave therapy in the East Valley and had six treatments. The doctor told me that after 30 days I should have a 60%-70% recovery. I was shocked that he underestimated it, as I went on to be fully recovered and able to participate in all activities involving my shoulder.

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive procedure which involves highenergy acoustic pulses (waves) which stimulate blood flow in the injured area to help promote healing and reduce pain.

The procedure was originally used to break up kidney stones. The physical therapy world quickly realized that it breaks up calcium, so therefore it also works on joint arthritis.

The beauty of Shockwave therapy is that you will know after the first treatment if it is going to be beneficial.

We use both a focused Shockwave (FSWT), that penetrates deeper into bone and ligaments, and a radial pulse wave (RSWT) for more superficial muscle tendon activation. From there, we follow it up with IASTM/Graston technique, using a scraping tool that breaks up facial adhesions. The combination of these three procedures usually takes about 15 minutes per area.

We recommend six treatments in 30 days, with a 30-day rest recovery for optimal outcome.

Shockwave therapy is a fast and efficient way to resolve most musculoskeletal issues. It can be used in combination with physical therapy and chiropractic care, but it can also be a standalone treatment.

We have recently incorporated pulse electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF), which works at the mitochondrial cellular level to help increase production of ATP for even quicker recovery.

For Trends readers we are offering a special complimentary treatment to determine if Shockwave therapy would help with their current aches/injuries. For more information: Cell 602.694.5014.

Non-Surgical Radiofrequency Skin Tightening

Thermage Skin Tightening

Have loose, wrinkled, or sagging skin? Want to avoid plastic surgery? We have a solution that could be right for your needs and goals. Whether it’s a sagging jawline, turkey neck, or wrinkled skin on your belly, Thermage skin tightening in Scottsdale can lift and tighten your skin for long-term results without surgery, needles, or downtime. Learn more about this treatment available at Ultra Smooth Skin below.

Non-Surgical Radiofrequency Skin Tightening

Thermage skin tightening is a popular choice for adult men and women. Whether you are just beginning to notice the symptoms of aging on your skin or have dealt with years of wrinkles and sagging skin, Thermage may be your solution. It uses radiofrequency waves to work deep within your skin, remodeling the collagen beneath the surface to create smoother skin. Thermage can be used in numerous places throughout the body, from the eyes to the thighs and knees. You will find that it is gentle yet effective even with only one treatment.

The Thermage Procedure

Treatment time varies depending on the treatment area. The larger the area, the longer your treatment will take. Before starting your Thermage skin tightening treatment, you will be asked to remove your makeup if you are receiving a facial treatment. The aesthetic provider will then place a grounding patch on your body, typically on the abdomen. The nurse holds a small device over the treatment area. First, the device cools your skin prior to heating it. Following the heat, your skin will again be cooled. This process is repeated until the entire area has been treated.

Integrating Gold and Diamonds with Other Gems

What is the latest in Bonnie Radow Designs?

I recently acquired some exquisite gold estate pieces which I have integrated into beautiful contemporary earrings and bracelets which incorporate gold, diamonds, and other precious materials. The result is striking and luxurious although they can be worn casually every day.

Where did you get your inspiration for these?

The inspiration just comes to me. It often is inspired by the beautiful pieces I am fortunate enough to acquire. These pieces speak to me and help me design contemporary jewelry that enhances their beauty and make them relevant today for my clients to wear.

What are some of your favorite materials to work with? Stones?

I love to integrate gold and diamonds with other gems stones such as rubies, materials such as onyx and mother of pearl, as well as other beautiful stones that enhance my designs.

What do you consider some of your signature pieces to be?

Each of my pieces is unique. For the current

collection, the long rectangular diamond ring is a defining piece in the collection

You are very generous to the community. What are some of your favorite organizations to support?

I support many organizations and my favorites are TGen and Arizona Costume Institute.

Please tell us about your upcoming trunk show and how people can RSVP. This year, by request, I plan on having a pre-Holiday Trunk show to accommodate more of my clients’ busy work and travel schedules. It will be held December 10 and 11. People can RSVP at bonnieradow@cox.net.

2025 Compassion with Fashion theme is “Love Unleashed”.

Tell us a little bit about the Arizona Humane Society’s Compassion with Fashion event and what makes it unique.

Laura and Alisha: It’s a Sunday luncheon, 27 years strong, which already sets it apart. What a legacy in our community of how Arizonans value animals! This year, we’re refocusing on fashion with the theme “Love Unleashed” and a Parisian chic style. We want guests to express creativity rather than adhere to a strict black-tie dress code. We’ve also added new community elements like gallery partnerships and events throughout the year, as well as an honoree party hosted by The Estate Watch and Jewelry Company!

The 2025 Compassion with Fashion theme is “Love Unleashed”. How will you weave that theme into different event elements throughout the day?

Laura and Alisha: The theme represents our boundless love for animals, the unconditional love they bring into our lives, and the strength of a community coming together to support our cause. This year, we’re excited to feature an artist series showcasing several local artists who have contributed special pieces for the silent auction, inspired by the theme. Attendees will see the theme reflected in decor, programming, and even our pet-focused vendor partners.

The Compassion with Fashion Committee is a group of passionate animal advocates who are united by their love for pets and dedication to lifesaving work. How did you first get involved?

Laura: I was invited by a former chair in 2014, and after attending, I joined the committee and co-hosted a gratitude party. That led to more involvement, including managing the live auction, and eventually, becoming event co-chairs.

Alisha: I had just retired from a marketing career and wanted to invest my time in something meaningful, and this event felt right. Once I saw the impact and met the committee, I was all in. We’re continually inspired by the vision of the founders, Betty, Beth and Stephanie McRae, whose commitment to pets and community laid the foundation for everything we do.

Tell us about the “fashion” component of Compassion with Fashion.

Laura and Alisha: Compassion with Fashion will deliver runwayworthy looks, stunning styles, and exclusive designer experiences. We are leaning into fashion this year and will be giving attendees the opportunity to interact with some exciting fashion brands. We’re hoping to really achieve that Parisian, fashion-forward feel while supporting brands that share the same passion for animals.

How would you describe the event to someone who has never attended?

Laura and Alisha: It’s probably the most fun you can have on a Sunday while raising over $2 million for animals. There’s a chance

to adopt a pet, enjoy fashion and art, and participate in great raffles and auctions. It’s a joyful, high-energy atmosphere filled with animal lovers.

Do you have a favorite pet story from this year or previous year’s that encapsulates the spirit of the event?

Laura: My husband fell in love with a dog at the event and entered the raffle without telling me! She ended up going home with us that evening, and we named her Indy. She had been abandoned and emaciated, but she’s now thriving with our family, and it’s been so nice to have this sweet girl to balance out our big, boy dogs.

Why is the mission of the Arizona Humane Society important to you?

Alisha and Laura: AHS is really a hospital first, offering top-tier care to the Valley’s most vulnerable pets. The resources and programs they offer, like the Circle of Friends spay/neuter initiative, help address animal welfare challenges right at the source. The staff and board create a supportive environment in which you really want to spend all your energy.

Where can our readers learn more?

The Arizona Humane Society website azhumane.org is the best place to start, and there’s a dedicated Compassion with Fashion page. Also, check out our Compassion with Fashion Instagram and Facebook pages, which give a great look at what the event is all about.

THE BEAUTY DUO

Keeping you beautiful & training the next generation

Meet Founders: Leslie Johnson, FNP-C, Medical Director and Erin Cooper, MAP-C, CLT

Q: Give us the 30-second snapshot of each brand. How do they fit together?

Leslie: Ageless Beauty & Wellness is our Scottsdale med spa where we deliver advanced aesthetic and wellness services with a clinical-meets-boutique feel. You can receive services from our Apprentices or from Erin, myself or one of our instructors.

Erin:  Med-Surg Aesthetics & Laser Academy is our professional training arm, built to train those interested in aesthetics, from recent high school graduates to licensed estheticians to medical professionals. We offer programs in medical aesthetics, lasers and injectables. Together, it’s a full ecosystem: real-world patient care and a pipeline for training the next generation.

Q: Patients keep hearing about your “Laser Facelift.” What is it, really?

Erin: It’s our Sciton Contour TRL full-field resurfacing protocol, designed to peel away damaged upper layers while kick-starting deep collagen remodeling, without surgery. Think softened lines, improved scars and texture, and a firmer look as the skin regenerates. It’s powerful, precise, and fully customizable to the individual.

Q: What inspired you to found Ageless and expand it to include aesthetic education?

Leslie: “I built Ageless to deliver medically led, natural results, where anatomy, safety, and artistry come first. I expanded into education after seeing a talent gap: clinicians needed real, hands-on training. I met Erin at an industry event, and we knew immediately we were meant to work together. Erin’s national reputation and world-class laser expertise enables us to offer robust aesthetics and laser training. Our niche experts, live-patient practice, and evidence-based protocols create job-ready providers and safer, smarter outcomes for patients.

Q: What’s your personal “why” behind founding the Academy?

Erin: I’ve spent years as a clinical laser trainer and saw a need for a deeper, more hands-on curriculum. One that blends science-based learning with significant in-person clinical immersion, so graduates are job-ready. I built our training platform to train for the science, so graduates have the fundamentals to work on any device. Students graduate with significant hands-on experience, making them sought after by med spas, medical practices and clinics.

Q: We’ve heard you pioneered an aesthetics career pathway for nurses. Tell us about it.

Leslie: Our Elite Injector Career Path is built for RNs, NPs, and PAs ready to break into aesthetics with real skill and confidence. It bundles Intro to Injectables, structured mentorship, and a supervised Apprenticeship. Students get live-patient reps, case logs, and business-building support to start a side hustle or full-time career, including a client base they can take with them.

Q: For prospective students – what sets Med-Surg Academy apart from other programs?

Erin: Instructor expertise, depth, structure, and our Apprenticeships. Our programs combine Zoom based didactic options with significant on-site clinical training. The Apprenticeship programs give students the opportunity to develop their skills, build confidence and gain resume-worthy experience. This creates job-ready providers and safer, smarter outcomes for patients.

Q: Your best advice for someone considering aesthetics training?

Leslie: Choose a program that treats you like a clinician, not a consumer. Look for small group training, real preceptorship, and instructors who actively practice. Then commit to mastering fundamentals before chasing trends.

Q: Favorite patient success story with the Contour TRL?

Erin: Patients who’ve tried “everything” for etched lines or acne scarring and finally see a smooth, light-reflective surface – that’s the magic. It’s not just looks; it’s confidence.

Q: And for readers considering treatment –what should they ask at a consultation?

Erin: Ask about device choice, treatment depth, downtime, and who’s actually performing the procedure. You want a plan that’s individualized, medically supervised, and anchored in long-term skin health.

Official Artist in Residence

The Town of Paradise Valley is proud to announce Dr. Curtis Dickman as the official Artist in Residence for 2025-2026. A celebrated local artist and retired neurosurgeon, Dickman will showcase his innovative and emotionally rich body of work in a year-long solo exhibition at Paradise Valley Town Hall, opening with a public reception on Tuesday, October 14, 2025. The exhibition will run through September 2026, featuring a comprehensive collection that reflects Dickman’s multidimensional artistry – including reverse-perspective sculptures, opticokinetic illusions, vivid mixed-media pieces, and paintings inspired by emotion, music, psychology, science, and perception.

“This is more than an art show,” said a representative of PV Arts Board. “It’s a rare opportunity to experience how Curtis Dickman blends science, healing, and visual storytelling to create artwork that “tickles the brain and warms the heart.”

A former professor of neurosurgery and pioneer in minimally invasive spinal surgery, Dickman’s second act as an artist has drawn acclaim for its technical brilliance and personal resonance. Many of his pieces are constructed to transform depending on the viewer’s position visually – engaging the eyes, emotions and intellect.

Dickman’s journey from medicine to art was shaped by personal healing and a lifelong commitment to community service, particularly in advocacy for children recovering from trauma. This residency honors both his artistic contributions and his dedication to meaningful outreach.

LBJ and O’Connor Institute Spotlight

You had the unique experience of working closely with President Johnson after he left office. What struck you most about the difference between the public perception of LBJ and the private man you came to know?

DKG: I had only seen President Lyndon Johnson on television before I was selected as a White House Fellow. We were invited to a dance at the White House and President Johnson introduced himself and danced with each of the three female Fellows. As I danced with him, his appearance startled me. In my mind’s eye, particularly as I had watched him speak about the Vietnam War, his image had become a caricature, his features locked into virtual immobility, eyes squinting, thin lips pursed, dangling ears. But when I met him in person, I saw instead a ruddy giant of a man with an animated, welcoming face, his presence and energy dominating the room filled with Senators, Representatives, Cabinet officials and White House staff members. As I got to know him in the White House and later working with him on his memoirs, my perception of him evolved from skepticism to respect but I was

not immune to the disappointment that I and many others felt about the Vietnam War.

You’ve written about several presidents. How does LBJ’s leadership compare with figures like Lincoln, Roosevelt, or Kennedy in terms of political skill and moral vision?

DKG: Lyndon Johnson’s political skill was unmatched, as he had a deep understanding of the legislative process and an uncanny ability to navigate Congress, which allowed him to pass landmark laws like the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. He would call senators at all hours of the day and night, with a mixture of persuasion, intimidation, and camaraderie. What made Johnson’s approach so effective was his tireless energy and his intimate knowledge of each senator’s character, needs, and weaknesses. His skill in these negotiations, which included even calling senators at 2 a.m., became a hallmark of his legislative career.

Johnson’s moral vision, in the context of the Voting Rights Act, which was passed 60 years ago, was rooted in the realization that justice is a collective responsibility. For Johnson, the struggle for civil rights was not just the struggle of African Americans; it was a fight that required the active engagement of all Americans. His leadership on this issue was driven by an evolving sense of moral responsibility, grounded in his belief that the U.S. could never claim to be truly free and just until every citizen had the ability to participate equally in democracy.

Johnson looked at FDR as a hero both personally and politically, referring to FDR as his political daddy. He greatly admired him for his transformative New Deal policies, his political brilliance, his ability to unite people, and his visionary leadership during the Great Depression.

If you had to sum up Johnson’s legacy in one sentence, what would it be?

LBJ’s presidency was defined by his extraordinary political skill and unyielding moral vision as he transformed America through the Great Society, landmark civil rights legislation, Voting Rights, and the War on Poverty, even as his legacy was cut in two by the escalation of the Vietnam War.

Late Addition Question:

Do you believe that President Johnson’s presidency was the greatest Greek tragedy in our history?

DKG: The contradiction between the moral weight of the Great Society versus the destruction and divisiveness of the Vietnam War was at the center of the ongoing debate that my husband, who also worked for LBJ, and I had for decades, which I wrote about in my latest book. As with many Greek tragedies, there is a profound sense of irony in Johnson’s fate – in the rise of a great political leader who sought to transform his country but whose flaws, particularly his handling of the Vietnam War, led to his political downfall. History, however, is constantly re-evaluated, its weight shifting as new perspectives emerge. For LBJ, his monumental civil rights successes are beginning to outweigh the shadow of Vietnam in the eyes of some historians, showing how the past is never fixed, but reshaped by the lens of the present.

You Only Get One Chance to Make a First Impression

You’ve probably heard the term curb appeal, but what does it really mean? At its core, it describes the overall attractiveness of your home as seen from the street. It might be the neat upkeep of your yard and the seasonal flowers in the flower beds and pots. All these details create an emotional reaction for your guests before they ever step inside.

The front door, often the focal point, provides one of the most meaningful first impressions. Here in Arizona, iron-framed glass doors with sidelights are a particularly appealing choice. Clear glass floods the entryway with natural light, while satin-etched (frosted) glass provides needed privacy.

For even more personality, there are countless patterned options to choose from – like rain, pebble, or striated glass – all guaranteed to make a lasting impression.

When designing a new front door, it’s usually best to work within the existing opening or footprint. This approach avoids the need for costly structural changes, such as new beams or headers, while still making a dramatic impact.

That’s the strategy we used here in both these projects. It kept the project cost-effective, the demolition and installation quick, and the patching and painting minimal. Oversized center doors are another option I personally love – they provide a wide, generous entryway and a beautiful balance with stationary glass panels on each side.

Have you thought about your front door lately? Updating it may be simpler – and more transformative – than you think.

In Search of Peggy Guggenheim

In her long and colorful life, Peggy Guggenheim, a woman who told the world she had slept with more than 1,000 men, left an indelible mark. The daughter of Titanic casualty Benjamin Guggenheim, Peggy was self-taught when it came to art and moved within the avant-garde artistic circles of Paris in the 1920s. She started collecting works and opened a gallery for modern art in London in early 1938. Shortly before the war broke out, she headed to Paris with plans to make purchases for an eventual museum but abandoned that plan when the Germans invaded, heading back to New York to open a new gallery.

After the war and her divorce from artist Max Ernst, she eventually settled in Venice, amassing one of the best collections of contemporary art today. Peggy remained in Venice until her death in 1979. Today, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection remains one of the most important and impressive collections of modern art in the world, as well as one of the most visited attractions in Venice.

Petiquette: Manners for Modern Pet Owners

Pets bring joy, loyalty, and the occasional muddy paw print into our lives. But not everyone finds fur charming – or your dog’s zoomies adorable. Whether visiting friends, strolling through shared spaces, or brunching with your pup in tow, good petiquette keeps both human and hound in good standing.

What to Avoid: Petiquette Faux Paw-s

BRINGING PETS WITHOUT PERMISSION

Your pet may be family, but not everyone wants them as a guest. Always ask first.

UNLEASHING THE CHAOS

Long leashes – or no leash – can cause confusion or conflict. Keep control when in shared spaces.

FORGETTING THE SCOOP (OR THE WIPE)

Leaving behind waste, fur, or muddy prints? That’s an instant no.

PUSHING INTERACTIONS

Not everyone wants to pet your dog – or have it climb into their lap. Respect personal space.

EXCUSING BAD BEHAVIOR

“Friendly” doesn’t excuse barking, begging, or jumping. It’s your responsibility to manage.

Closing Thought:

What to Do Instead: Best in Show Behavior

BE YOUR PET’S ADVOCATE

If your pet seems stressed or overstimulated, remove them calmly and quickly.

TRAIN BEFORE YOU TROT

Basic commands like sit, stay, and quiet go a long way in public.

RESPECT SHARED SPACES

Sidewalk cafés, parks, and homes are not playgrounds. Keep your pet where it belongs: by your side.

ADJUST TO THE ATMOSPHERE

Not every host allows pets on furniture – or in rooms. Bring what you need to keep them contained.

LEAVE A GOOD IMPRESSION

Thank those who welcome your pet. Clean up, follow the rules, and be a guest people want back.

Great pet owners know it’s not just about the dog – it’s about the setting. When you lead with respect and awareness, everyone wins. That’s true petiquette – and it’s pawsitively polite.

Support for Families Navigating This Disease

NOVEMBER 8TH AT THE ARIZONA BILTMORE

Imagine being 5 years old and learning you’ll have to fight every day just to stay alive. That’s what happened to Logan Treadwell, diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) during the isolation of the pandemic. No warning, no family history – just a life changed forever.

Today, Logan is a vibrant, inspiring Breakthrough T1D Youth Ambassador. Her bravery has turned her family into powerful advocates, and this year the Treadwell family will be honored at the Promise Ball Gala.

What is T1D?

T1D is an autoimmune disease where the pancreas stops producing insulin. It’s lifelong, serious, and affects both kids and adultsregardless of lifestyle.

What does Breakthrough T1D do?

Formerly known as JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) Breakthrough T1D funds the most promising research in the world to prevent, treat, and ultimately cure T1D. It also provides vital support for families navigating this disease.

Why the Promise Ball Matters.

Now in its 29th year, the Promise Ball is more than a gala – it’s a movement. Each year, the Phoenix community comes together to raise millions to bring us closer to a world without T1D.

“We look forward to the day when Logan and others living with T1D won’t have to be scared about dangerous low blood sugars or the daily burden of T1D. We truly believe this day is coming.” Bobbi and Reed Treadwell

The Accidental Fashion Designer

When Mary McFadden died last year at the age of 85, she had long since walked away from the word of fashion. But what most people did not realize is that Mary, like Lilly Pulitzer, was truly an accidental fashion designer. Both ladies ended up designing clothing because others wanted what to wear, they had made for themselves.

Born in New York and raised on a cotton plantation in Tennessee, her very affluent beginnings gave her the opportunity for extraordinary higher education. She attended Columbia University where she obtained a degree in sociology and archaeology. She went on the Sorbonne and Traphagen School of fashion design. But Mary often said only wanted to be a journalist.

Her first outing occurred in the early 1960s, securing a public relations position at Christien Dior in New York. There she traded

dresses for pay, until she felt she had learned her craft. It was at Dior that she was introduced to her first husband Philip Harari. He was a diamond merchant for De Beers. The two were introduced by famed model and socialite Baby Jane Holzer. The couple left that same year for South Africa. Together they had one daughter. With the help of friend and Vouge Editor Diana Vreeland, Mary secured a job as a fashion editor at Vouge South Africa. She held the position until the magazine closed the office in 1966. From that point until the mid-1970s she did various freelancing for Vouge in the United States and France.

Mary McFadden’s time in South Africa and later Zimbabwe, had turned her into something she never expected. By the late 1960s she started to experiment with various fabrics and tribal and cultural motifs, She hired a seamstress and began to create her own fashions. Everywhere she went people stopped her and asked where her clothing was from. Her look quickly caught the eye of Henri Bendel CEO Gereldine Stutz who asked her to create thirty dresses for the New York specialty retailer. In 1976 Diana Vreeland finally convinced Mary to launch her own clothing line and leave Bendel’s. Blending fine fabrics, her trademark pleating draped like liquid gold down a woman’s body and was unmistakable. Although the dresses were similar to previous collections of Henriette Negrin and Mariano Fortuny, Mary’s dresses became an instant success!

Dubbed the archaeologist of high fashion, her lines became instantly recognizable. Flowing fabrics, diaphanous lines and mistic collections inspired from countries and continents made Mary McFadden one of the most respected and awarded designers of the twentieth century. Her attention to detail in beading, bejeweling, cut, color and fabric made her a stand-alone in an industry that was

quickly becoming homogenized. Her signature dresses and gowns were cut in Australia, dyed in Japan and finally machine-pressed in the United states. The gowns caught on quickly with the smart set. Jackie Kennedy wore them constantly which helped skyrocket the brand. Funny, Jackie had done the same thing for her friend Lilly Pulitzer in 1963.

In 2002 Mary McFadden sensing styles were changing decided to close her fashion house. While many wanted to buy the house, she felt it would be like forging a piece of art. Mary’s effervescent and breezy personality were a sharp contrast to her physical appearance. She often looked unapproachable and off-putting to the average person. But underneath the severe make-up and stark hairstyles lay one of the most important and very possibly underrated fashion designers of our time. If you happen to own anything she designed, hold on to it. When she stopped designing, her line came to a halt. Today there are few designers or resurrected labels that can claim to be original. No one owns the Mary McFadden label nor will anyone in the future. The designer had strict provisions that a relaunch of her line be totally prohibited. Mary McFadden certainly made her mark.

A Cruise for the Discriminating Traveler

There are cruise ships and then there are cruise ships. Mega ships seem to have taken first place in the last 20 years, while very small ships cater to the elite. Yet somewhere in the middle lies Cunard. I sailed with my parents on the now decommissioned QE2 in 1995. It was opulent and exclusive. The ship, like the newer Queen Victoria, was divided into First Class and Tourist Class. The former being less attractive if you were not a Grills passenger, which we were.

Today, Queen Victoria offers both Grills and a standard class passage. But things have greatly changed from 30 years ago. Apart from Grills passengers having larger cabins and access to a private lounge and restaurant, it’s hard to determine the differences. The public rooms, cocktail lounges, restaurants and lido decks are simply smashing! Even dinner in the ship’s main dining room

is quiet, impeccable and met with unbelievable service. Cunard has attention to detail not found on today’s large and overdecorated vessels. The cruise line has retained an old-world dignity. Richly paneled walls, tartan carpets, crystal chandeliers, fine art and sculpture adorn the ship. Cunard has designed the ship to accommodate over 2,000 guests. There is an abundance of lounges, libraries, art galleries, game rooms, restaurants, and swimming pools. At times you feel the ship is sailing with less than 500 people. Even her larger sister ship, the Queen Mary 2, is similar in spacious design. More people more room.

The restaurants throughout this spectacular vessel are grand. Every night you can choose to dine casually in the pub or select a more formal night in the Grills or Verandah restaurants, should you be booked in that class. If you tire of the Grill restaurant, simply descend the stairs to the famed Verandah Room. Steak and seafood abound, and the side dishes are mouthwatering. This particular restaurant also has perhaps the most incredible dessert selection imaginable. Even the 24-hour buffet located on the lido deck is not to be believed. Breakfast begins early. Custom omelets, crepes, quiche, pancakes, and French toast are served daily along with every side you can think of. At lunch and dinner, huge prime ribs, pasta, sushi, chops, and vegetables abound. The ship also has one of the largest salad bars imaginable. The buffet and 24-hour room service will keep any passenger well-fed.

Entertainment is key but low key. There is nothing overly glitzy or brash. Show performances, organized dancing, art shows, jewelry forums and impressive daily lecture series give every -

one a chance to explore different facets of personal preferences. The casino, not large, offers everything for passengers to try their luck, too.

Queen Victoria is a very special ship. Although she debuted more than a decade before her sister ship, Queen Anne, Cunard loyalists seem to prefer her over the newer Anne. Cunard wasted no expense on her traditional décor, while Queen Anne is more modern in appearance and lacks the richness of her older sister. But this is what set Cunard apart. If you prefer tradition, sail the Queen Victoria. If modern is more your style, then set out on the Queen Anne. Either way, you are sure to be enchanted by your voyage.

Cunard offers itineraries which range from short 2-day cruises to a 117-night voyage around the world. With any selection, you won’t be disappointed. Cunard is simply ladies and gentlemen, serving ladies and gentlemen. It’s a brilliant line to sail.

The Banner Ball

Celebrating its 10th year, the Banner Health Foundation’s signature annual fundraising gala will be bigger and better than ever this fall. Previously known as the Pulse of the City Soiree, The Banner Ball will take place at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025.

For the first time, proceeds will benefit Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center locations in Arizona, advancing care and services such as diagnostic imaging and technology, clinical trials of promising new treatments, community outreach and education, and supportive programming for patients, caregivers and survivors.

The Banner Ball 2025 is chaired by Mari Lederman and Suzi Hilton, who answered our questions about this all-new gala:

The Banner Ball presented by The Banner Health Foundation Saturday, November 1, 2025 | Five O’Clock in the Evening Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa 2400 E Missouri Ave Phoenix, AZ

The Banner Ball Co-Chairs: Suzi Hilton and Mari Lederman

What does nonprofit Banner Health mean to this community?

Banner Health is Arizona’s largest health care system and our state’s largest private employer. Banner cares for every member of your family, from before birth through end-of-life, with world-renowned specialists across disciplines and multiple care sites that make the right level of care easy to access. Many of us have grown up with Banner as part of the fabric of our community for the past 25 years. The Banner Ball will celebrate the unique role Banner plays here in Arizona and across the mountain west, and shine a light on the unique partnership Banner has with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

What makes Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center unique?

In 2011, Banner joined forces with MD Anderson Cancer Center, named one of the country’s top two hospitals for cancer care every year since U.S. News & World Report began its annual Best Hospitals ranking in 1990. This partnership has changed the landscape for cancer patients and their families throughout our region, giving all of us and our neighbors access to cancer treatments that are among the most advanced in the country— with care based on the same protocols and practice standards provided at MD Anderson in cooperation with MD Anderson clinicians and researchers. Whether you’re at the main campus in Gilbert or one of the Banner MD Anderson clinics in downtown Phoenix, the northwest Valley, or Scottsdale (coming soon!), every patient benefits from a multidisciplinary team that adheres to the philosophy, process and guidelines of MD Anderson’s clinical leadership, and provides a full range of multidisciplinary care options, including medical oncology, surgery and radiation.

Why is this year’s Ball supporting cancer specifically?

More than 42,000 Arizona residents will be diagnosed with cancer this year, with more than 14,000 expected to die from the disease. While more Americans are surviving cancer compared to 30 years ago, the disease is striking young- and middle-aged adults more frequently, specifically women between the ages of 50 and 64. This truly deserves our attention right now. Banner MD Anderson saw a 44% increase in patient volume in 2024 compared to 2023, which underscores how cancer is impacting so many people in our community.

From the start, philanthropic support has played a vital role in the growth of Banner MD Anderson—accelerating the pace at which leadership can expand patient care, conduct research, and save lives. New developments in oncology are happening quickly, and charitable investment allows the Banner MD Anderson team to respond in real time.

Tell us about this year’s physician honorees.

We are thrilled to recognize the incredible care provided by three of Banner MD Anderson’s oncologists: Dr. David Paul, Dr. Emily Grade, and Dr. Matthew Ulrickson. Each of them provides compassionate care to patients, works to advance the field of cancer care, and goes above and beyond to restore their patients’ health. The number of lives they have touched is staggering, and we are thrilled to share a bit of their stories with our audience and to celebrate their careers of life-saving service.

What motivated you two to chair the first-ever Banner Ball?

Like so many people, we have been touched by cancer personally and within our families. We both understand the need to continually invest in research to discover new treatment approaches that can save lives. We both also appreciate that Banner MD Anderson provides whole-person care for every patient, plus complementary therapies, to help them heal and recover in body, mind and spirit. The Banner Ball will help raise awareness in our community of the care available at Banner MD Anderson, and the importance of staying up with routine cancer screenings like mammograms, colonoscopies, pap smears, prostate exams, and skin checks. We all have to be advocates for our own health.

What can we expect at The Banner Ball this year?

We’re really leaning into the beautiful Art Deco architecture of the Arizona Biltmore Resort with our décor and styling as a way to celebrate this uniquely Arizonan treasure. Our guests will see many chic touches with lots of black and gold and geometric patterns for this elegant black-tie event. Our evening begins with a cocktail reception and will be followed by a seated dinner, and inspiring program, an energetic paddle raise, and then we’ll dance the night away at the after party with live music by The Hamptons and latenight nosh. We promise an evening of celebration, education, and inspiration.

The Disappearance of Maud Crawford

On a rainy Saturday evening in March of 1957 in Camden, Arkansas Maud Crawford disappeared. The noted transaction, deed and title attorney was legendary in her state. Maud was one a handful of female lawyers and perhaps the most noted at the time. On Friday, she gave her maid the night off and covered her breakfast nook and larger dining room table with three legal abstracts she was working on. The Crawford’s dined at the country club on both Friday and Saturday nights. They asked their maid to work at a dinner party instead on Sunday evening. But on that rainy Saturday night, her husband at the movies and Maud preparing for her dinner party vanished into thin air. A police investigation that was closed quickly discovered no foul play in the sprawling antebellum mansion. Maud’s shiny Mercury convertible remained untouched and garaged, just steps away from the home. Her husband was quickly exonerated; There wasn’t a single clue in sight. Beth Brickell has done a tremendous job uncovering more than sixty years of Southern justice. In her page turning book, she reveals several motives, shady underworld dealings and the mid-century good ole boys network that resulted in Maud Crawford’s disappearance and death. An excellent read.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT

• The couple met on Valentine’s Day 2020, which is why they chose to get married on Valentine’s Day weekend. Touches of the holiday were incorporated throughout the day.

• Instead of a traditional guest book, the couple had guests sign a mat around a vintage 1960s photograph of Mountain Shadows.

• There was a table of family wedding photos dating back to the 1930s displayed during cocktail hour.

• As her “something borrowed” and “something blue,” the bride wore a pair of her mother’s sapphire earrings.
