Environmental Learning Center - An Extension of Your Own Backyard
By Anna Valencia TilleryFather and child bonding in the great outdoors is just so natural and it is what the Environmental Learning Center (ELC) offers along with so much more! Tucked away near the foot of the Wabasso Bridge, the ELC is a 64-acre island campus that will have families experiencing the natural surroundings and the Indian River Lagoon firsthand, featuring interactive exhibits, walking trails, and water excursions. And for this Father’s Day, a great way to spend quality time could be from a kayak or canoe paddling at your own pace. Or choose to go on a guided tour where you will navigate the mangrove tunnels and learn about the local wildlife, flora and fauna.
If you prefer motor boating, the ELC’s Pontoon Boat Eco-tours
picnic areas. From there, explore the miles of trails and boardwalks through the mangrove forest. Check out the Explorer backpacks and go pond dip-netting. Enjoy the Wild Nature Playscape and build a fort. While on property, go on a nature scavenger hunt and see how many mangrove tree crabs, butterflies and gopher tortoises you can find roaming the property.
Spending time together in the great outdoors is such a special way to create lifelong memories. A Family Membership is a great gift that includes FREE admission plus discounts on purchases and rentals.
(Non-members pay admission of $10 for adults $5 for kids. Admission waived for snap card holders.)
are a great way to spend time as a family and visit the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge or Sebastian Inlet. Book your trip in advance and enjoy the scenery as your captain takes you by the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge and mangrove islands where birds, manatees, and dolphins gather. Another option is a sunset cruise with a naturalist guide highlighting the lagoon’s splendor. With the ability to fit 16 guests on board the boat, it is a terrific experience that can accommodate larger groups leaving from the ELC’s own dock. Though, if you wish to do a little river roaming that can be arranged. Offered as a seasonal tour, the Saint Sebastian River will transport you to old Florida with a jungle-like atmosphere home to a great diversity of wildlife. Spot an alligator, a variety of birds, and maybe even a manatee. This trip departs from Dale Wimbrow Park Boat Ramp in Sebastian, Fl. This is the ONLY trip to depart from Dale Wimbrow Park, all other ELC pontoon trips depart from the ELC. Best part, you can bring your own food and drink! What a great way to show off where you live with out-oftown guests; a private boat excursion with a captain; keep in mind if you don’t reserve the whole boat be sure to get tickets in advance as it does sell out often.
Maybe you want to be a little more hands on? If so, the Discovery Station, Touch Tank and Aquarium will be well worth your time to experience up close. While cooling off inside, you will learn more about who lives in the Indian River Lagoon and how you can help keep our planet clean and green. Talk about a cool space for a birthday party! Then stroll the campus and bring a lunch to enjoy in one of the ELC’s
And with summer here, the ELC is proud to offer up some incredible Summer Camps beginning June 5th and running through August 11th for children ages 6-13 year olds. Sign up your children and choose the weeks that work with your summer plans. Campers will have fun while also activating their senses, learning new skills and making friends. Visit the ELC website to read about Young Explorers (Ages 6-7), Island Adventures (Ages 8-10) and Junior Naturalists each with camps running from 8:30 AM - 1:30 PM or 3PM Scholarships available. (The Maggy Bowman Scholarship Fund.) Of course, there is something for the older kids too. Sign up to be a camp counselor and earn volunteer hours while also serving as a mentor for the younger kids. Speaking of volunteers, the ELC is always looking for folks that have time and talent to spare. Even if it is just a few hours each month, the ELC has opportunities to help maintain the grounds, be a guide, work with the children during camps, host field trips or just help out in the gift shop that is full of nature inspired goods. Give the gift of quality time and fresh air this Father’s Day with the ELC.
JASON COLEY Husband, Father and Real Estate Leader
By Anna Valencia TilleryKnown for having one of the largest real estate firms on the Treasure Coast, Renee and Jason Coley began their real estate career in 1999 as investors. Looking back at how far they have come, the mother and daughter part of the Coley team thought a Father’s Day article would be a great way to highlight their journey.
In 2004, Renee pursued her real estate license and made a leap of fate to quit her job and pursue real estate full time. Starting at a boutique office, Renee found success quickly with the mentoring her brokers offered. Deborah and Ron Ray, still family friends, helped her overcome her shyness and encouraged Jason to pursue his license. He got licensed in 2005 and immediately Team Coley was formed. “What we did not know then was how much we would complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses,” Renee recounts fondly.
In 2012 Renee got her broker’s license and set out to open their own brokerage. “Starting with the name, we knew we wanted our kids involved. So, we sat around the dinner table with our children, Aaron and Savannah and brainstormed until they came up with Atlantic Shores Realty Executives; ASRE. Unknown by many, the A is for Aaron and the S is for Savannah.”
Though Renee fell in love with Port St. Lucie back in the late 80’s visiting her grandmother during school breaks, the Coley’s life in the Treasure Coast has changed since opening their first office in St. Lucie County. “We loved our home in PSL but when we invested in a new construction property in Vero, I decided that I liked the new house better, so I convinced Jason to rent our home and we moved to Vero Beach. Later, when we were looking to expand our office, Vero was the natural choice,” divulged Renee.
Celebrating more than a decade as broker owners of ASRE, they now have three offices one in each Treasure Coast county with upwards of 200 associates. Unlike many other real estate brokerages, the Coley’s never recruited agents. Rather, the growth was 100% organic. “I think the charm of a family run brokerage appealed to others like seeing our children helping us stamp postcards and stuff envelopes for mailings.” Coley recalls. With growth, new roles were made. Barbara, Renee’s mom, processes commissions. Christine, Renee’s sister, oversees all aspects of compliance. Aaron, their son, lives in Washington, D.C. and helps with data entry and analyzation remotely. Whereas Savannah is an active, licensed Realtor and works with Jason and Renee in the daily operations of Team Coley and Atlantic Shores. Renee states, “It feels good to know the quality time our family gets to share both in and out of work. Though one of the biggest perks of a family team, is being able to come in the office and see my handsome husband holding his grandson, Weston Michael,” Renee beams with pride.
Savannah shared, “Working with my dad is so special. One thing about him is you always know where you stand. He is always honest, even if that means telling you something you don’t want to hear. It doesn’t matter if you are his daughter or a customer; I really respect that. As a leader, he always gives us everything we need for success. His support is apparent and in return it’s impressive to witness the loyalty he earns.”
Always the first to make someone laugh with a cheesy dad joke or sarcastic remark, Jason takes his role as husband and father seriously. Aaron confides, “Dad is always making sure that we take time to do family get togethers and plan for vacations, he really enjoys being present in the moment and making us feel loved.” As a manager and team leader, he brings that same humor and commitment to these relationships ensuring all agents feel appreciated and have access to the tools they need to be successful. Case in point, some realtors have been with them since they opened their doors ten years ago. As supporters of the community, ASRE enjoys helping local charities. Two of the organizations the offices support annually are United Against Poverty and the Treasure Coast Food Bank raising money with a Turkey Feather Drive.
Jason Coley’s booming voice, matched with a big smile and wit is something that makes him so memorable. Yet, it is the family he has made a priority in his life that are the ones who are honored to be able to call him theirs this Father’s Day and all year-round.

RAISINGTHEROOF WITHLARRYNEESE
A behind the scenes interview with a business on family, faith, and fortitude.
“I have been a roofer by trade all my life, with some of the country’s best firms,” Larry explains from his desk surrounded by framed concert posters, showcasing the multiple fundraising events they have hosted at his corporate headquarters. It is hard to think, by looking around at their fleet of vehicles and prominent US1 location just north of Midway, this St. Lucie County based, Owens Corning® “Platinum” certified roofing company opened just eight years ago.
“We grew smart, and we grew right,” Neese owner shares with pride. “Nowadays there are 48 full time employees working with us and we are debt free with plans to open our next location in Brevard County this summer.” Though they are moving forward with a little extra pep in their step these days, the company did start with humble beginnings as Larry and his wife, Christine of 30 years, worked side by side in the beginning recovering from the housing market of 20082012. Yet, with perseverance and a dedication to providing a worryfree roof, done right the first time; the company grew and found new office that was blessed with a great location and space for a stage, thus a new phase of Larry Neese Roofing was born.
“At some point, all my four sons have worked at the company. Now, two work full time and hold important positions which makes Christine and me grateful.” Derrick, 26 has worked for four years full time and heads up the roles of General Manager and Sales Manager. “It’s a role he takes a lot of pride in especially with the fact that we have virtually no complaints about issues with jobs not having enough materials or poor attitudes even with the hot Florida sun,” Neese shares.
The youngest of the Neese boys also works at the company, Joshua 22, has been with the company for three years and serves as VP of Operations handling all the scheduling of the jobs with the customers and the crews. Proud dad, Larry Neese shared, “Even after our most recent set of storms there were zero issues about leaks or damages to any of the roofs, we had completed which is over 5,000 roofs in just 8 years”
The oldest son, 28, Jeremiah has a passion for roofing too and
works with the area’s top vendor for supplies that keeps him engaged in the industry. Whereas Stephen at 24, is the only son who lives and works outside of Florida. Residing in Ohio with his wife, these two will be giving Larry and Christine their first grandbaby this December.
Two and half years ago, the company was doing so well, Christine left working in roofing and took on a position with the Clerk of Court. Shortly thereafter, having known the Neese family well for years thanks to the successful Martini Network, Veronica Kolibab joined on as the Business Development Officer. Thereby giving Larry the opportunity to work more extensively of the corporate structuring and growth of the company, while also being able to fine tune the branding.
Giving back is a big part of what the Larry Neese Roofing mission is, having grown up in a family of travelling missionaries, Larry feels fortunate to have knowledge and connections to share. Active with Project Lift, Larry, Derrick and his son, Jeremiah specializing in the supplier end of the business, teamed up to work hands on with the at-risk youth being mentored in the program to teach them roofing skills annually. “It is a small roof they use at Project Lift and my boys worked alongside kids showing them why each step and each shingle was important in the process; it made me so proud,” Neese confided.
Though, it was the revolutionary idea to host “Music & Mingle” networking concerts to help his out-of-work musician pals during Covid that has really paid off. To date, Neese Roofing has raised many thousands of toys and dollars for great causes like Toys for Tots, helped the Humane Society, Graceway Village, Youth Agriculture, and Veterans program and many more. Christine’s 50th surprise party in the showroom with over 125 people in attendance is the event that made him the most pleased; “it was a full month early and she had no idea! “With the new Brevard location opening soon, the Larry Neese Roofing company will keep its corporate offices in Fort Pierce and looks forward to providing more quality jobs and roofs throughout the region now including the Space Coast.
CUTTING CREATIVE
By Anna Valencia TilleryReserve, this business savvy man is always on the go and takes each task delegated to him by his only daughter on with pride and it gets done fast! Doug’s famous quote is “I don’t want to marry the job.” Both Tara and her mom enjoy teasing him for that stance in making quick work of jobs big or small; though Tara is convinced the strategically placed Hersey Kisses helps keep her father motivated.
“Whenever I have a question regarding my business, my father is the first person I call. Whether it is money related, or about new equipment and services, he always gives great advice. He is so smart when it comes to technology too! Before the 3D printer was a popular thing, he sent me links about it. Now he is on top of the AI trend and seeing how it can help my business grow.” Biek Robinson beams with this notion.
For the past several years, the smell of freshly cut wood and paint has wafted through the store locations Tara Biek Robinson has utilized prior to finding her new home for Crafted the store inside the Harbor Bay Plaza.
“I love making people’s ideas come to life. I like working with the client about the piece and ways to make it special for the person receiving it. It is all about the little details,” Tara highlights pointing out dozens of examples that line shelves showcasing her talent for wood working ranging from custom key chains and jewelry to large cutting board adorned with bright colored epoxies, all as artistic as the next.
Inside the bigger retail space, this busy artist also was able to have more space for a large laser allowing her to now cut material as big as 24X36! In fact, with these new tools Tara was able to create a 2 foot by 5-foot art installation for the interior of a sailboat. As a young couple who lived on a sailboat that had just ushered into life their first child, the husband commissioned the piece to showcase their life together as a family and as it grew. “We all cried when she saw it. It was very special.” Though her drive for creating bigger and more elaborate pieces will not stop there, this graphic designer by trade, will be adding to her laser collection this summer with a second large scale laser as well as a fiber laser that will be able to cut metal
“Since starting my entrepreneurial journey 23 years ago, my parents (Ann and Doug Biek) have been my biggest fans and support system. I would not be where I am today if it were not for them.” In honor of Father’s Day and the new storefront, this wood working artisan, graphic designer and publisher of this publication wanted to pay a tribute to him for being such a strong support system in her life. Having served for 35 years in the Army
Of course, if you did not know of Tara’s love of lasers and wood, metal, and paint; perhaps you know her best as a local publisher and editor. In 2012, she bought into the Real Estate Book which was a national franchise. Yet, prior to the launch, she worked as a graphic designer and helped many real estate agents with their direct mail campaigns, thus it was a good fit with her connections to create the new publication. In no time, the book was a hit and continued to build. For almost eight years, she was able to meet some incredible people both in the organization and as advertisers; some she still works with today always impressed with the care and time she puts into the customer mailers and ads.
However, when COVID hit she did what we all did; pivoted. No more small book that focused on just Martin County, rather a full-size high gloss piece that covered the entire Treasure Coast was what she envisioned; and now it is celebrating its fourth season!
“Home on the Treasure Coast is going to be the new name of our growing magazine and I love seeing the book take on a whole new life. The addition of the editorial content has been such a value add for all our advertisers. Our readers love the hometown content and the businesses we featured are seeing an impact. So, we are taking it a step further and will continue to adapt to the needs of the new and existing residents and visitors that discover where we call home.”

MARRIED? DIVORCED? WIDOWED?
If you got married, divorced, or are newly widowed, please contact our Office to avoid losing your homestead exemption!
MARRIED?
DIVORCED?
• Married couples can claim only one Homestead Property Tax Exemption or residency based exemption.
• If both of you currently own a homesteaded property, either in Florida or anywhere else in the United States, one of the exemptions will need to be removed no later than January 1 after you are married.
• Failure to notify our Office could cause you to not only lose your Homestead Exemption, but also you may be subject to back assessment liens, penalties, and interest.
• A Final Judgement for Dissolution of Marriage automatically changes your property ownership from “tenants by the entirety” to “tenants in common.” This means each spouse owns 50% interest in the property.
• A divorce can affect the amount of your homestead exemption as well as who benefits from the accumulated Save-Our-Homes benefit, also known as portability.
• Please contact our Office if you anticipate a divorce so that all parties may understand the different scenarios and portability calculation consequences.
• If you currently benefit from homestead exemption and have become widowed, you may qualify for an additional $5,000 exemption off your property’s assessed value. This equates to approximately $100 in annual tax savings.
• To apply for this exemption, please visit our Stuart or Hobe Sound office and provide your Florida driver’s license, social security number, and a copy of the death certificate.
• Once you qualify and receive this exemption, you are required to notify our Office if you re-marry as the exemption will need to be removed.

CBD Oil for Your Furry Friends
by Robin Hall - Out2News.com5 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE GIVING IT TO YOUR BEST FRIEND
First CBD is short for cannabidiol that is found in cannabis leaves. It has been used for centuries for healing humans and more recently animals too. You are probably familiar with terms like weed, Mary Jane, or marijuana. CBD is derived from the gentler cousin known as Hemp, you have probably tried a part of the hemp plant, the hemp seeds, a tasty treat. CBD has become a mainstay in the holistic veterinary world to help dogs from serious diseases like cancer to separation anxiety.
FIVE THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT GIVING CDB TO YOUR DOG:
1. CBD for dogs will not get your furry friend high! CBD does not contain THC, the scientific term for THC is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol. This is the psychoactive compound that will leave you and your dog high. CBD is known to do the exact opposite of that, it can potentially help your dog with anxiety issues.
2. CBD can be great for dogs with seizures. It can help your dog to get control over those seizures. CBD oil for dogs has been known to help dogs with neuropathic pain.
3. CBD oil for dogs is for all dogs, just watch the dosage for the size of the dog that you have. CBD has been touted with benefits for anti-nausea, anti-anxiety, shiny coat, improved appetite, joint health, arthritis, and more.
4. Not all CBD oils for dogs are created equal! You need to pick an oil that is certified and tested to know it is safe for your furry friend. You do not want an oil that is filled with, well fillers and additives.
5. Even if your dog is currently on medications, CDB oil for dogs should be safe to take. Double check with your vet when in doubt to be sure. CBD may help with several pet health conditions, including anxiety, chronic pain, and seizures. Discuss using CBD with your veterinarian who has treated pets with CBD before starting anything new. You will come up with a plan on how to safely help your furry friend feel the best they can.

Making Memories Exploring & Glamping
By Anna Valencia TilleryO to Tampa We Went on Easter Weekend of 2023…
This was our second trip in a row without Charlie. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder and I do believe that holds true in this scenario, our teenager now wants to camp again after a few without him attending; bonus! Anyhow, this trip was special for a couple reasons. First o , we have been river roaming for two+ years, though I have been at my Florida based moving company for a full 10. This trip was a gift for that time well served. No engraved watch for me, a river roamin’ excursion was all I asked for. So, o to Tampa we went.
That Friday morning was a cool, crisp one. We took our time heading due west on SR60. Any easy drive with a few opportunities at the tail end for meandering, which we took all the way to the Williams Park Boat Ramp. Without Charlie, this mom was responsible for backing up on the pontoon and taking him solo to the dock at our waterfront AirBNB. A touch nerve wrecking ya’ll!
Here I am, putzing along in the pontoon and what do I see to my left? A full CIRCUS TENT…how peculiar?
Upon arrival to the freshly upgraded dock at our weekend abode, my husband was already there and quick to assist. It was seamless. With a few steps upwards, we saw an entire property adorned by sectioned units for guests. Though there was not much time to linger, we had some Alafia River to explore for the balance of that arrival day. Boy did we! Suggestion, smoked wings from the bbq shack outside the Beer Shed is a must! Anyhow, we visited a few establishments and saw some incredible homes nestled in-between plenty of dog friendly beaches. Did I mention we also left Seger home this trip unlike the last adult trip? We felt super guilty.
Once back at the property, it is hard to deny it was overwhelmingly charming. That is, once we finally found our unit, long story. Good news, it was as cozy inside as it was out. Complete with grills, firepit, guest room and a communal ice machine, this place truly made our low-maintenance weekend memorable. Better still, the universe served us an extra treat…a carnival! Not just any carnival, rather a fulltime training midway! Having been from Michigan, which is the state this circus troop derived from, I always felt I would have excelled in such a profession. Granted, I still talk for a living…yet, seeing the craft of the carnie up-close made me inspired. The lights, the smell of popcorn, the sound of shrills mixed with laugher; it was a terrific experience! The Ferris wheel operator even granted us extra time, the view of the entre downtown Tampa Bay area from the top was astonishing!
Bright and early the next morning, our dear friends the Kings arrived. Linda accompanied by her husband, Greg, came baring a birthday gift for my Michael. What was it? A river roamin’ couples float for our upcoming trip to the Ichetucknee River in late Spring. So thoughtful! Giving them enough time to hang their clothes and stash their toiletries, we applied sunscreen and set o for a new river. Greg, Linda’s first husband and now reunited, has spent the last 20+ years in the Tampa area. He knows the waterways there well, it was a gift he was there to help us as we crossed the big Hillsborough Bay. As we finally made our way past all the cargo ships, the downtown Tampa part of the Hillsborough River slowed our pace and unveiled much Easter cheer. As we passed an o cer patrolled Easter egg drop from the modern museum along the water, Rick’s on the River appeared. The waitresses, beckoned by way of a large handle with a “service sign” mounted atop was a nice first stop. The service was on point and the appetizers tasty. Back down the Hillsborough we went, back towards our abode o the Alafia River. Our 59th river accomplished mere weeks before our dear friend Linda’s 59th birthday; so fitting!
Back on the Alafia River we visited each watering hole and enjoyed an appetizer or two at them all. Each venue o ered up live music and water dockage, along with great backdrops for photos. Best part, with all our visits we came in well under budget! Never did make it back to the carnival for night two, but what fun we had! Downtown Tampa was sure a sight to see via the water; hope you can experience it too!
