you get ‘prospectors’ from Iran snapping up a handful of horses, you know you’re doing OK. In this issue (commencing page 16) Ric Chapman talks to TBA and Aushorse supremo, Peter McGauran, about the ongoing marketing of the Australian ‘product’ and what’s in store over the next 12 months. We also take a look at the phenomenon called Apache Cat and profile former top jockey Mark de Montfort who is attempting to emulate some golden results out of the saddle. I’m particularly excited about our next issue which will focus on Christmas and the 2010 yearling sales. We will be featuring a special Xmas gift liftout, providing some great gift ideas for the person who has everything (except a winner!), while we will also speak to trainers and agents on the things to look out for when selecting a yearling.

APACHE CAT In a multi-coloured world, a sea of white is bringing joy to thousands of fans. They call him Apache Cat …

H

E HAS 683 members in Facebook and over 100 friends on MySpace. He also warranted around 60 tweets in 24 hours at the end of October. According to MySpace, his favourite movies are Phar Lap and Seabiscuit, his star sign is Libra and he lives in Cranbourne. Nothing unusual really, except HE is a horse. But not just any horse: this horse has captured the hearts of horse lovers and minds of horse punters with a stellar career over the past four and a half years, including eight Group One victories. Thing is though, it’s Apache Cat’s colouring that adds the most colour. As Australian scribe Tony Arrold put it, the flashy gelding’s four, white stockinged feet suggest he has waded through a large tray of plaster while someone upended a can of white paint down the right side of his face.

Incredible markings … incredible horse. Almost assuredly, when the curtain finally falls on this baldy faced turf maestro, he will be remembered long after the majority of peers. That big white nose has long had the habit of poking itself in the right places: usually at the winning post, and it’s arguably the most famous snoz in turf history.

But my how they cheered Apache Cat’s 18th black type win. In fact, when Damien Oliver took Apache Cat for a stroll back down the straight, they hooted ‘n hollered even louder the second time around. Thousands ‘rode’ him in the Schweppes, but it was a far cry from his debut in a 2YO midweeker at Sandown on 30 March 2005, scoring over 1000m in relatively comfortable fashion.

He was at it again on Cox Plate Day 2009 with the ‘white’ the difference between first and second when defeating stablemate, Mic Mac, in the Schweppes Stakes-G2.

Back then he just another horse with unusual markings. Robyn Lawrie, who bred Apache Cat with Paul Radford, reckons that when he was born, it looked as if he’d been dropped in a bucket of paint.

And although the Schweppes was merely a supporting act to the main event, Apache Cat’s victory was, by some measure, the most memorable event on a star studded day that included an 82 year old legend winning the Cox Plate with a three year old.

As the owner of Apache Cat’s dam, Tennessee Blaze, Paul syndicated the horse in partnership with Robyn, Mr and Mrs Gary Riddel and Mr and Mrs Ken Lofthouse, placing the horse with Cranbourne trainer, Greg Eurell. >>

www.tracktotrack.com

11

It was a relationship that had previously been tested by fire with Greg training two of Tennessee Blaze’s earlier progeny: Tiger Belle (3 wins) and Raptor (2 wins) for much the same ownership. Greg, who competed for Australia at the 1984 Olympics, had a high opinion of Raptor and considered him a Guineas chance before the 3YO was injured in the paddock. But as is often the case in this enigmatic game, when one stable door shuts, another one opens and despite a hiccup at his second start (and first at stakes level) Apache Cat won the Gibson Carmichael-LR at Flemington handsomely before being tipped out for a spell.

12

www.tracktotrack.com

By the time Apache Cat resumed in the spring, he was evidently the subject of a ‘considerable’ offer from Asian buyers … an offer which subsequently fell through after viewing a video of the horse: allegedly arousing eastern superstitions due to Apache Cat’s ‘colour’. So, what turned out to be prospective buyers’ trashing, soon became the incumbent owners’ treasure as Apache Cat filled trophy cabinets and bank accounts. Apache Cat won his first Group race in the Guineas Prelude that spring and came back with consecutive wins in the Schweppes Cup-G3 and Cadbury Guineas-G1 in Melbourne and Phar Lap-G2 in

Sydney the following autumn. Despite placings in the Memsie-G2 and Feehan-G2 as a spring 4YO, Apache Cat went winless that campaign, but rectified the situation next time in, reeling off victories in the Meneres-LR, Carlyon Cup-G3 and Blamey-G2, a third in the George Ryder-G1 and fifth in the Doncaster-G1 behind Haradasun, wins in the Bletchingly-G3 and Liston-G2 and a second in the Makybe Diva-G2. However, a second Group One had eluded the blazed wonder for almost two years until the 2008 Lightning Stakes at Flemington. It was to start an incredible run of five straight Group Ones in

three states: Lightning, Australia Stakes, TJ Smith, BTC Cup and Doomben 10,000. By now the die and truly cast. Like fellow sprinting icon, Takeover Target, Apache Cat had defied relatively humble origins to grab a slice of racing lore … winning over Joe Public with his fighting spirit.

Returning at the end of September with a sixth in the Manikato-G1 and second in the Schillaci-G2, the Schweppes on (dye?) was well Cox Plate day would be only the fourth of 19 career victories in the spring! LIKE FELLOW SPRINTING ICON, A m a z i n g maybe it TAKEOVER TARGET, APACHE CAT HAD … just means DEFIED RELATIVELY HUMBLE ORIGINS this sprightly 7YO is simply TO GRAB A SLICE OF RACING LORE … getting better with age? in HK Sprint-G1 at Sha Tin) – but was up to his old tricks this autumn with a repeat Australia Stakes-G1 victory, thirds in the TJ Smith-G1 and BTC Cup-G1,

WINNING OVER JOE PUBLIC WITH HIS FIGHTING SPIRIT.

The fabulous run would end last spring – although he did campaign in Melbourne, Perth and Hong Kong (when third

plus an eighth Group One in the Doomben 10,000.

For partowner/breeder, Paul Radford, the Schweppes thriller was more emotion charged than usual given that Apache Cat’s mum, Tennessee Blaze, died when foaling a Street Sense filly in September. “She was a 21 year old mare, so it wasn’t a massive shock,” Paul reveals, “but she was the first horse we bought and started all of this”. Fortunately they were able to save the Street Sense filly – the Whiskey Road mare’s 12th foal (a trouper to the end, Tennessee Blaze only missed twice in 14 seasons at stud). Paul is far from ‘bereft’ however, retaining three Tennessee daughters: Tiger Belle (a Magnus foal at foot and booked to Hard Spun this spring), Miss Evangeline (Consolidator foal and visiting Lonhro), plus a Dubawi filly that Paul initially sold for $120,000 at this year’s Inglis Melbourne Premier before buying her back. Not surprisingly, the Dubawi filly is with Greg Eurell and poised to race around Christmas. >> www.tracktotrack.com

GREG EURELL

As for Apache Cat’s male line, he hails from the second of three Aussie crops for Mr Prospector stallion Lion Cavern. A Group Two winner in North America, Lion Cavern produced 20 stakes winners overseas (including the Irish 1000 Guineas-G1 winner Crimplene) but Apache Cat is his sole black type winner from 200 live foals down under. And with his youngest locallybred stock now 6YOs, it’s unlikely he’ll enhance that record in Australia.

But does he need to? Like Takeover Target’s sire, Celtic Swing, Lion Cavern’s legacy will outstrip that of more ‘versatile’ peers and, courtesy of Apache Cat, will leave an indelible mark on Australia’s breeding landscape. In a time for heroes, Apache Cat is a genuine star of the turf and when he eventually retires, a great deal of colour will go with him … on both counts!

31/10/09 10:11 P

Former Federal Minister, Peter McGauran, has been charged with the responsibility of charting a course for the Australian thoroughbred breeding industry during a rocky economy. As RIC CHAPMAN concludes, we’ve picked the right man to do it.

Y

OU KNOW THAT OLD PUBLIC SPEAKING ADAGE: “just imagine everyone in their underwear”.

For although you may never imagine Peter McGauran in his underwear, and never likely to see him in a tutu for instance, the man has a healthy respect for ballet, and ballerinas in particular. “Superb athletes,” he insists matterof-factly, and, at the same time abandoning his usual cautious tone. “Ballet is physically and artistically the most demanding art form and those who spend all their time perfecting it end up looking …angelic. They are outstanding athletes and take on an ethereal air about them. I cannot admire them enough.”

He built this opinion and appreciation for the athlete within the ballet community from his stint as the Right Honourable Minister for the Arts during the Howard Government. It was clearly his favourite portfolio: “Dealing with artists from various fields was my most enjoyable time in public office. And although they can be, by nature, difficult and temperamental, you cannot help but admire them. They are highly motivated and well principled.” You can see from his description of the art community definite similarities between them and yearlings! So it comes as no surprise that the man we in the thoroughbred world first came to know as the hero of the EI crisis, has ‘expanded’ his admiration of the athlete. >>

These days, professionally at least, the equine athlete. Peter McGauran is shaping up as a great defender of the nuts and bolts of thoroughbred breeding and racing … the type of guy who will get in there and battle both governments and obstinate opposition. And he looks to have a pretty good handle on what’s good for industry participants. After 18 months as the Chief Executive of Thoroughbred Breeders Australia and Aushorse, McGauran has made his presence felt. You may well have seen him on Sky Racing’s Racing Retro recently, arguing strongly for the jocks during the whip brouhaha. His impassioned stance helped the little lads get their message across – and his involvement was greatly needed because, at the time, Bob Bentley and the Australian Racing Board simply had a closed ear.

number of animal welfare campaigners will not be able to dent the process much further. “They will try, no doubt, but they have no basis now,” Peter points out. “The whips are padded, meaning the horse feels no pain: so the substance for argument by the welfare groups has disappeared. Their involvement will only be through symbolism – trying to appear like they are active. “But no country in the world has ever considered banning the whips altogether and that will never happen because the jockeys need them. They are essential safety tools and help prevent injury.” Peter has that ‘way’ about his process of speaking: measured words, but precisely delivered. Little wonder he was appointed general manager of Marketing for Aushorse, the Thorougbred Breeders’ arm of marketing the Aussie bred overseas. In the past 12 months alone, while McGauran has been at the

With the global economic downturn in full swing, auction houses across the planet have experienced massive reductions in revenue: some up to 50%. Australia, because of the international buying bench, has thwarted the down turn – to a degree. “We’ve managed, over the past 12 months to sell $100 million worth of horse flesh overseas,” Peter adds. “That was 2600 independent transactions and I can tell you, the international buying bench saved us from total devastation. “Remember too that they bid on three to five horses before ending up with one. So their help is invaluable. They have helped the breeding industry stay, largely, self sustaining.” But he has a word of warning for breeders too: “Just because the worst of the global financial crisis is over, I still suspect there will be a further drop in revenue at the 2010 sales. “That’s because our dollar is going so well against the US greenback. This means it is a lot more expensive for international buyers to get their horses to where they need to go. Saying that though, I have heard some great reports from some farms that say they have had a great year. But two years ago nominations were down 15% and that must have an impact too.” Still, recovery is at hand.

helm, Aushorse has wooed some prominent international buyers to these shores. And just as well ...

McGauran looks at the Asian market, and its almost obsessive love affair with our horses, as a further way to generate sales. China in particular is on the agenda – but a cautious approach is needed. No mavericks with their own agendas in selling >>

off crocks to the Chinese market should be allowed to operate. “Precisely. We need to go slowly but my view is that within single digit years there will be a flourishing racing market in China. I have been carefully and pragmatically cultivating a relationship with China and in November I will attend the Whuan Annual Thoroughbred Carnival. “Everyone in the sport in China, apparently, will converge there. I will be able to assess the progress of where they are heading and notice what trends are emerging. We are working very closely with the Australian Embassy in China on this issue. The Embassy is very keen to play a vital role in developing this relationship.” In Beijing during October, McGauran watched on as the first ever Australian Racehorse Sale was conducted in China. And he came away beaming. There is clearly massive interest in the Aussie made horse for racing and breeding purposes in China and although there is no legalised gambling on horse racing in China yet, there are signs of growth in that area. And when it does, the floodgates will open. “Even with the limitations the ban on betting has on the development of a racing industry, China is progressing towards a valuable niche market for Australian breeders.” 20

www.tracktotrack.com

That’s what I mean: cautious, precise, understated … but optimistic as well. That Chinese sale, conducted on the outskirts of Beijing at a private training track, the vendor offered 80 unraced Australian breds with published reserve prices. The horses were supplied by Magic Millions and sourced from across Australia. Quarantined in the Hunter Valley before being transported to Beijing, they were broken in and prepared for the sale by former Hong Kong trainer and MM agent Stephen Leung. Most of them were two year olds and were breezed up the day before the sale. MM assisted in the promotion and marketing of the sale and General Manager David Chester travelled to China to assist in final preparations and on the day of the auction itself. Being the first of its kind, the sale attracted significant interest and was well attended by Government and Equestrian officials as well as horse enthusiasts. “The horses were in excellent condition and paraded exceptionally well, presenting a great image for Australian breds. “The auction was professionally conducted and despite the reserves being published in the catalogue, we achieved a 50% clearance rate with several sold post sale.”

Those that did sell at auction brought high prices, the sale topper being a four year old son of Octagonal out of From the Cellar which was knocked down for A$195,000, closely followed by a three year old colt by Octagonal from Constitute for A$190,000. McGauran believes another sale of this kind in China will follow in the near future: “These are entirely commercial matters between the vendor and MM, but a significant buying bench has been identified in China now too, which holds potential for the future. Of particular interest were the sizeable number of horses bought by Mongolian buyers for racing and breeding purposes.” McGauran will meet with Australian and Chinese Government officials during his visit to Beijing to lobby the opening up of the trade in thoroughbreds which is beset by complex and expensive bio-security and quarantine protocols between the two countries. Nothing, however, that should stymie McGauran. After all, he was the man who helped pull us all out of the EI crisis and he has been rewarded with the job of guiding the breeding industry to new heights of excellence and sales. And somehow, you just sense the man is going to do it.

Greenwood Lake

A debut winner over seven furlongs (1400m) at Saratoga, Racetree’s well credentialled young stallion Greenwood Lake quickly established himself one of America’s finest two-year-olds

A

T ONLY HIS SECOND start stepping up to Gr.1 level, the 16.1hh bay was second to Bevo (More Than Ready third) in the prestigious Futurity Stakes at Belmont.

And then it was his turn – the Gr.1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont seeing Greenwood Lake charge home to finish 2.5 lengths in front of some very classy rivals – among who were the subsequent big race winners High Yield, More Than Ready and Traditionally. 26

www.tracktotrack.com

The following month he recorded his second strong victory, taking out the Gr.2 Rensen Stakes at Aqueduct – his debut season form earning him the title of US second leading two-year-old. Racing only twice more at three, Greenwood Lake kicked off his stud career in Kentucky where he has proven himself a reliably classy stallion. Boasting an excellent winnersto-runners strike rate of 67.6%, Greenwood Lake has been represented nine black type performers including the tough stakes winners Lake Secret (nine wins and 19 placings from 42 starts) and Placid Lake (six wins from 11 starts). A sprinter/miler (just the sort of stallion Australian breeders like), Greenwood Lake is siring horses capable of winning from 1000m to 1800m and his progeny are

durable gallopers who know how to find the line. Greenwood Lake’s sire Meadowlake – like his son a Gr.1 winner at two (the ArlingtonWashington Futurity Stakes), is also a stallion who sires a high percentage of winners – 50 of them being stakes winners. And he hails from a stallion family – his half brother the successful Leo Castelli whilst another close relation is the champion stallion Hail To Reason. As a bonus Greenwood Lake also has proven sire success in his female line – being a _ brother to the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Success Express who did such a good job from his Hunter Valley base. Retired after the spring of 2006, Success Express has to date sired 437 winners from 611 starters – an outstanding 71.5% strike rate.

And his black type credentials are strong, 32 stakes winners and 34 stakes placegetters including the Gr.1 winners Savannah Success (dam of the Cox Plate winner Savabeel), Al Akbar, Mossman, Polar Success, Coogee Walk, It’s My Sin, Quick Star and Explosive Burst. And he is also a very good sire of sires (his sons Mossman, Al Akbar, Diamond Express and Key Business siring stakes winners) and broodmare sire (his daughters producing 17 stakes winners including the Gr.1 winners Savabeel, Gold Edition, Duporth, Wonderful World, Vouvray and Excites). Greenwood Lake and Success Express are sons of the Gr.3 winning Dancing Champ (Gr.2 winning son of Nijinsky II) mare Au Printemps. Also dam of the Canadian

Champion Turf Horse Charlie Barley and the Listed winner Royal Hudson, Au Printemps has had two daughters produce stakes winners – American Odyssey and Sohaib. Au Printemps’ dam is the stakes placed Lorgnette, grandam of the Gr.1 winners Whitmore’s Conn and Air Express (sire of the Gr.1 winner Airwave) – as well as the 17 times winner Wander Kind who has also proven his worth at stud as the sire of six stakes winners. Also ancestress of the stakes winners Mud Route, Nursery Rhyme, Tiva’s Little Sis, Lovin’ Lass, Support The Arts, Artemus Sunrise, Hash It Out, Hostess, Heart Ashley and Ashley’s Kitty, Lorgnette is a daughter of the Gr.3 winning mare Mlle Lorette and granddaughter of the champion Gallorette.

A four times Gr.1 winner, Gallorette really made her mark at stud – her descendants including the Gr.1 winners Ministrella (Phoenix Stakes, Moyglare Stud Stakes, Cheveley Park Stakes) and White Gloves (Irish St Leger). This is a family that has been prolific over many generations, its other members including Triple Crown hero Omaha, Kentucky Derby & Belmont Stakes winner Johnstown, US Champion 2Y0 Nadir and the Gr.1 winners Mashaallah, Folk Art, Local Talent, Mark Of Esteem, Northern Baby, Phalanx and Turco. Boasting excellent fertility, Greenwood Lake stands this spring at $8,800 and his progeny have proven popular at the sales – his yearlings fetching up to $110,000.

Do you remember that Chumbawamba song, Tubthumping? Course you do: I get knocked down, but I get up again ... It’s actually a ditty about some drinker’s head, but could well be the signature tune for boxers the world over. Ironically, for Julian Holland he’d suffered his greatest knockdown after he stepped outside the ring.

ULIAN HOLLAND is an inspiration. Spend a few minutes chatting to the bloke and I’ll be darned if you don’t start seeing that glass as half full. Actually, his cup runneth over. A former Champion boxer, farrier, family man, good Samaritan and all round lover of life, Julian has just delivered a swift uppercut to a bout of Hodgkins Lymphoma that’s had him on the ropes for most of the year. In fact, this interview had to be postponed for a few days as the radiation therapy to his throat made it difficult to speak. However, here he was – back on his toes, fresh as a daisy. Renowned for his hand speed as a boxer, he’s got a lightning lip to match.

However, it was the move to Queensland’s Gold Coast six years later that saw Julian first become interested in boxing. “We lived just down the road from a boxing gym at Nerang and my dad took me down for a look. I saw Frank Ropis (former Australian welterweight champion) training. “Frank had this shaved head and looked as tough as they come and I thought to myself, this is the life for me.” Little did he know then – at all of 11 – he would not only emulate the deeds of his hero, but surpass them. Under the guidance of leading trainer Hillary Connolly who had moved up from Melbourne, Julian had 110 amateur bouts, simply saying “I won a lot of titles”. Turning professional in 1995, Julian’s first paying gig was on the Joe Bugner undercard who would win the Australian heavyweight title that night (larger than life, Hungarian born Joe fought Muhammad Ali twice and Joe Frazier before capturing the World Boxing Federation heavyweight championship at the age of 49). That night though, Julian spent a whole lot less time in the ring than Joe: while it took Bugner 12

During this time, Julian had completed his blacksmith apprenticeship at the Gold Coast Turf Club and, as a consequence, was dubbed ‘The Fighting Farrier’. It was a pretty amazing coincidence, but I got into the industry because of Matty Ropis, Frank’s brother. The two of them weren’t exactly close so I didn’t get introduced through one or the other: it just happened that Matty trained dad’s first racehorse.” It was during his farrier apprenticeship that Julian formed close friendships with former jockey and media personality, Simon Marshall, >> www.tracktotrack.com

Julian latched on to some of Melbourne’s leading stables, including David Hall, initial trainer of Makybe Diva. “I was pretty pumped about that … one year I won the Commonwealth title and the next I shod a Melbourne Cup winner!” But Julian hasn’t been lost to boxing entirely and, much to his delight, can still mix his two sporting ‘loves’ professionally and recreationally. Last year Glen Boss had to shed an incredible five kilos to ride Samantha Miss in the Cox Plate 36

www.tracktotrack.com

and turned to Julian – “mates since I was 16” – to help him trim down the excess. “It was terrific … we got a whole team of us together and he dropped the weight three days out.” Julian ‘gives’ in a range of ways and is not only communityminded, but proactive when it comes to the underprivileged. Conceptualising Mobile Gym Australia – as the name would suggest, a gym that folds out and is transportable – it operates mainly around the Brisbane area and was subject to a Queensland

“I reckon it’s terrific: they get about 70 kids down there on a Friday night and it’s much better that they climb through the ropes than through somebody’s window. We’re hoping to get more grants to open them up in other parts of the country.” Earlier this year Julian was participating in the ‘Run For Kids’ when he noticed a lump in his throat, which was subsequently diagnosed as a cancerous growth. “I’ll admit it’s been a pretty tough year dealing with the cancer, but I reckon I’ve beaten it. I’ve got an awful lot to live for.” Too true. Aside from his flourishing farrier business (employing two apprentices and operating out of Cranbourne), Julian and his wife Narelle have two children, Jayden (9) and Kade (8). “I’m in the process of setting up a gym at home and conducting boxercise and weight loss classes. Narelle’s currently setting up her side of the business utilizing her knowledge and experience as a chef and Holistic Lifestyle coach to help people with their nutritional eating plans, while I’ll look after the fitness side. “I reckon we’ll get a heap of jockeys signing up.” (Perhaps a not-so-svelte journo as well!). It’s not hard to see why Julian Holland is a success. Amazing work ethic, intelligent, healthy attitude, generous of time and spirit, a great sense of humour. Tremendous will. He got knocked down. But he got up again.

Golden Lake Lakewood Stud stallion, Golden Lake, is rapidly proving that a nonexistent racetrack career is no barrier to breeding barn form.

I

N THE VASTLY competitive cauldron that is thoroughbred breeding, unraced stallions have to push the proverbial uphill. Regardless of pedigree and conformation, there is a clear prejudice against entires who weren’t tested on the track … whatever the reason for their absence. Golden Lake fits that bill. Although sold as a yearling at the 2003 Inglis Melbourne Premier, the colt suffered an eye injury and, as a consequence, was deemed unfit to race. Despite the aforementioned ‘commercial’ considerations, owners determined that Golden Lake warranted a chance at stud and he opened the batting in the spring of 2005 at a fee of just $2,200. He certainly had plenty going for him in the pedigree department. 38

www.tracktotrack.com

Golden Lake’s sire, Danzero, for instance, needs little introduction. Hailing from the legendary Danehill’s first Australian crop, Danzero won the 1994 Golden Slipper and has gone on to produce over 430 winners. Foremost among them is Dance Hero who emulated his sire by winning a Slipper, while his other Group One winners include Fairway, Niconero, Danni Martine, Danglissa and Jymcarew. Golden Lake is also out of a Rubiton mare in Midnight Mist, with Danzero ‘nicking’ particularly well with Century line matrons, producing the likes of Group winners Kaphero, Count To Zero and Hoystar. Pointedly, of the three Danzeros from Rubiton mares to reach the track, two have won, including Danzerani, a 5-time winner in Australia and Hong Kong. As for Golden Lake’s dam,

Midnight Mist, she was a handy performer racing out of the Brian Mayfield-Smith stable and is a proven producer with her filly Flute of Bubbly winning in Adelaide and running fourth in the SAJC Auraria Stakes-G3, while her 2002 offering, Handsome Target (nee Two Oceans), won four races in Hong Kong and Australia. Furthermore, Midnight Mist is a three quarters sister in blood to Moonee Valley Champagne Stakes-G2 winner Truly Wicked and a half sister to Flemington Group winner Ticket To Rome. Still, despite the weight of pedigree evidence, Golden Lake would be just one of 285 stallions standing in Australia in the $1,000-$2,500 range that first season: numerically the strongest category of the 938 stallions returned to the Stud Book in 2005. Not surprisingly, they weren’t knocking doors down seeking

stallion watch

out Golden Lake at stud and the Danzero stallion covered just 20 mares first up, with subsequent books of 31, 28 and – last spring – just seven mares.

has produced a cheque … 100% money earners to runners. Sure, as the numbers increase, the percentage will decrease, but for a largely unheralded, unraced son of Danzero, it’s a more than commendable start to his stud

(excellent fertility however with only two of the 67 mares returned failing to get GOLDEN in foal!)

Making his debut in the Vain Stakes-LR at Caulfield in August, Djatala ran a huge third behind Starspangledbanner who subsequently won the Group One Caulfield Guineas in October. And the best may just be about to come with Golden Lake half relations to stakes winners Tszuyu, Grand Duels, Road Worker, Zip Baby Zip and multiple city winner Finniss Storm all waiting in the wings.

LAKE HAS ONLY HAD A HANDFUL OF RUNNERS – FIVE AS A MATTER OF FACT – BUT EACH HAS SHOWN SOMETHING … CERTAINLY ENOUGH TO AROUSE THE INTEREST OF ASTUTE BREEDERS

Naturally e n o u g h , Golden Lake has only had a handful of runners – five as a matter of fact – but each has shown something … certainly enough to arouse the interest of astute breeders. With his oldest runners now just three year olds, two have won, another is stakes placed, another is placed and the fifth

career. Lago Azzurro got the ball rolling with a win at two, while About Me has a win and two seconds from four starts, but it’s the fleet hoofed Djatala that is making us sit up and take notice.

At a fee of just $2,200, Golden Lake represents enormous value for those who breed to race and for further information, phone Lakewood Stud McLean Whittaker on 0419 867 709.

MARK

DE MONTFORT A game of golf may well be the launching pad for trainer Mark de Montfort to emulate his wonderful career in the saddle.

R

U M O U R HAS IT THAT jockey turned trainer, Mark de Montfort, ‘pulled up’ when playing against retailing kingpin and leviathan owner, Gerry Harvey, in a round of golf a couple of years back.. He could be forgiven for doing so … after all, Mark had only just hung up his saddle and was desperately looking for the right ‘cattle’ to fill the recently allocated boxes at his, albeit small, stable at Sydney’s Rosehill racecourse. And, while Gerry is one of the biggest owners in Australia, there are – after all – more hungry trainers than hungry Harvey horses.

Still, there’s no way Mark would have ‘tanked’. Despite being one of life’s gentlemen and as astute businessman, he’s also highly competitive, whether it’s riding, training OR swinging a club. And he’s pretty darn good at all three. There’s obviously nothing wrong with his powers of persuasion either with Gerry Harvey giving the ex hoop a horse on spec, a King Cugat gelding by the name of McClintock. Some 18 months down the track, McClintock announced – in his own inimitable fashion – that Mark de Montfort has arrived as a trainer with his Bill Ritchie-G3 win at Randwick on 26 September, followed up by a command performance in the

Moonga Stakes-G3 at Caulfield on Cup Day (17 October). “When I played golf with Gerry, I hadn’t trained a winner, but he gave me a horse and there’s not many people who would do that,” Mark excitedly told the media throng. It’s questionable as to what has given him the greatest thrill – his first black type success in the new profession, or myriad victories during his 30 years in the saddle. One thing is for sure, even as a young apprentice he had a presence: strong ethics that caught the ear of legendary Sydney turf journo, Max Presnell, who penned a Sydney Morning Herald back in the late 70s. It reads in part: “Seventeen year old apprentice Mark De Montfort had to overcome hardship before winning his first race, on Tudor Vain at Kembla Grange on Tuesday. Shortly after joining Frank Penfold’s stable, Mark broke his left leg in a track fall. A week after recovering, a horse he was holding wheeled around and kicked him. >> www.tracktotrack.com

MCCLINTOCK WINS MOONGA STAKES

Mark suffered a broken right leg. He was just cleared by his doctor when another horse he was holding bolted and broke his left arm. While sidelined with a broken arm, young Mark asked me to take him to Randwick racecourse one morning because he wouldn’t get the opportunity when working. After a bad start he is now with Ray Guy and is on his way. I think he’ll make it.” Max has made some great calls over the years, but perhaps none more prescient. For despite that somewhat ‘broken’ start, Mark would rise to the very top of his profession with his highlights including an AJC Derby and Golden Slipper to name just two of his many feature wins. The 1987 AJC Derby on Myocard was in the most sensational of circumstances, seriously overshadowing one of Mark’s headiest performances. Shane Dye, who had given up the ride on Myocard, was on 42

www.tracktotrack.com

board stablemate Imprimatur in the Derby and would be subsequently handed a six month suspension for what stewards deemed improper riding. It did look bad … turning for home, Dye had a good bo-peep over his shoulder and shifted out considerably, allowing Myocard to slip through the gap and win like an odds on pop should. Not surprisingly, it made huge headlines. Mark would later tell Presnell it was one of his greatest disappointments: “There was more focus on Dye than what I thought was one of my best rides. Had you asked me before the race if there was one horse I didn’t want to get near, it would have been Imprimatur. He (Shane) would have been the last person I would have wanted help from, needed help from or relied on help from. “I’ll never know why he did it. Everyone forgets I came from 12th on the fence to be third on

the rail at the turn. I think he was young at the time and he was also riding for Doc Chapman. When he looked to his right I think he thought, ‘Geez, I can’t knock him down’ so he went the other way. That was my take on it. We never spoke. We never got on.” Fortunately, no such controversy surrounded his victory, 12 years later, on Catbird in the Golden Slipper. Mark recalls how he had ridden Catbird to his four wins prior to the Slipper and that everything came together on Sydney’s day of days … a “real team effort”. The all-rounder also rode extensively overseas: Malaysia, two seasons in Mauritius and a few months in Hong Kong. He didn’t enjoy his spell in Hong Kong, although he still marvels at the money that spins around China’s betting centre: “To give you an example of how good the money was, I had just won the Epsom on Final Fantasy. >>

A

LOT HAS changed on King Island since they first commenced racing in 1892.

For starters, winning owners get a cheque these days instead of wallaby skins. The obvious incentive for changing the ‘stake’ – aside from political correctness – is that you’re likely to get more horses at your race meeting if the owners can put something in their hip pocket. But the main thrust of King Island racing is having fun. Always has been. And let’s face it, by the King Island Racing Club’s own admission, it wouldn’t have survived the past 117 years if racegoers didn’t have one helluva time. With King Island stuck out in the middle of Bass Strait, they have to fly in the bookmakers, stewards and jockeys, while a good number of patrons also head on down from the mainland.

Ironically, while King Island is famous for its beef and crayfish – and especially cheese – horse racing gets little fanfare. However, believe it or not, they have seven race meetings between the end of November and January, including one on Boxing Day, New Year’s Day (King Island Cup) and the Fly-In program on 23 January (for a full list of sale dates, see ‘Diary’ on page 60).

Rather uniquely, King Island’s race programs are ‘dual code’: a mix of gallopers and pacers which BOTH race on the one mile (1600m) grass track. A number of clubs throughout the world could lay claim to staging dual meets, but it’s unlikely many of them would have them both running on grass. (Anyone who has munched on a King Island steak would attest they have the best grass too!) >>

But while racing on King Island is all about having a punt, a good feed, a few drinks and as much fun as you can standing up, the Islanders are focused on getting their neddies cherry ripe for race day.

KING IS

Come September, around 80 odd horses go into training and Ian Johnson from King Island Travel reckons most of the trainers ride their own work or drive their own horses. Ian, who claims to weigh in around 120 kilos and would surely be the biggest trackwork rider in Australia (could even be another world record for King Island) has a couple of gallopers in work and also puts a standardbred through his paces. “Having both codes has drawn in people from all across the Island. It really is a family affair and, let’s put it this way, if you don’t own a horse, you’re related to someone that does.”

money. With around five gallop and three pacing events scheduled for the day, King Island will also stage its first Human Hurdles event. Ian explains: “The heats commence at 8am and the final will be run between the fifth and sixth races where eight finalists will jump out of the starting stall carrying a champagne flute full of liquid (hopefully not the real gear!).

Ian is particularly proud that a bloke like Cranbourne trainer, Ken Keys – an ex Islander – has done so well in the big smoke: “ K e n ’ s b r o t h e r C o d g e (Robert) still COUNTRY RACING lives on the Island and ALWAYS HAS has 10 horses in work.” A STORY TO TELL .

“They have to jump five hurdles and finish in the fastest time with the most liquid left in the glass.

Next year, for BUT NONE “You don’t its Saturday have to be a LIKE KING ISLAND 23 January skilled hurdler meet – the – just have a F l y - I n good balance program – and a sense of fun.” the King Island Racing Club has taken the bit between its teeth Everyone gets a prize, while the and will offer over $10,000 in winner will be awarded a holiday prizes, totally separate to stake 50

to the value of 10 grand. That’s better than a flick on the backside with a wallaby skin. Registration for the Human Hurdle closes on 18 December. Additionally, private plane owners (it takes around 45 minutes to fly in from either Tasmania or Victoria) will have

landing fees waived for the day and have the opportunity to convert their plane registration to a horse running in the race. “The registration winner of each race will be presented with a King Island Produce Hamper and, those registering prior to 21 January, will be eligible to win a three night accommodation package to Broome. Registration is free,” Ian adds. “It should be a great day – we’ve also got a jazz band and you can sample our cheeses or have one of our lip smacking steak sandwiches.” For information relating to any of the King Island race meetings, phone Lucinda Dengerink on 0408 546 469 or email kingisltravel@bigpond.com for further information. Lucinda will be able to help you out will travel, accommodation, dining and entertainment, registrations, what hat you should wear ... In fact, if you have any questions at all, give Lucinda a bell (although we’re not prepared to vouch for her race tips!) For another good source of info on King Island visit www.kingisland.org.au Evidently the average temperature on King Island throughout November, December and January is in the early 20s which, if like most of Australia, you’re currently sweating your way through what could be a long, hot summer, sounds like a godsend. Bay, 2005 Redoute’s Choice – Closure (USA) (Alysheba USA) Standing: Burwood Stud, QLD Ph: (07) 4693 1309 2009 www.burwoodstud.com.au 2009 fee: $1,100

Unraced due to injury, Allegro Con Brio was bred by Highgrove Stud and really looked the goods early – handsome enough to fetch $650,000 as a Magic Millions weanling. By Danehill’s superb son Redoute’s Choice – multiple Gr.1 winning sire of 54 stakes winners – this musically named bay is

a half brother to five winners including the US stakes winner Salute Him. His dam Closure, by the champion Alydar, is out of the stakes placed Lyphard Mare Awesome Account – dam of the four times Group winner Anguilla, the Listed winner Kashgar and the stakes placed Alive With Hope, in turn dam of the Churchill Downs Turf Classic-Gr.1 winner America Alive.

This is a family that has been producing topliners for generations, its ancestress the legendary matriarch La Troienne. Close up in Allegro Con Mio’s pedigree are the big race winners Heritage Of Gold, Numbered Account, Dance Number, Bluegrass Account, Frost Giant, Assatis, Redattore and Distant Way. He can also count amongst his relations the successful stallions Private Account, Rhythm and Woodman.

LONE WOLF

Bay, 2005 Encosta de Lago – One World (Danehill USA) Standing: The Tamworth Equine Veterinary Centre Ph: (02) 6766 4333 2009 fee: $1,100 (incl gst)

Budget breeders looking to source the influence of Australia’s most expensive stallion Encosta de Lago – sire of 59 stakes winners – can consider this newcomer to Tamworth. A good enough type to fetch $700,000 at the Easter Sale, secured by the Freedman brothers, Lone Wolf showed early ability at the trials but didn’t quite measure

up in Victoria. He did however find winning form in NSW, at the end of his brief racing career successful at consecutive outings at Queanbeyan – showing dash over the 900m. Really bred, Lone Wolf is a son of the Gr.3 winning juvenile One World by the legendary Danehill. She is one of eight winners produced by Prawn Cocktail who has been well

represented by the Gr.2 winner Langoustine and the stakes placegetters Achil Island and Marigot Bay. Another generation back and this family is all the more impressive, Prawn Cocktail being a half sister to the dual Gr.1 winning leading stallion Royal Academy (155 stakes winners) and to the dam of the champion sire Storm Cat (167 stakes winners).

NEW APPROACH (IRE)

Chestnut, 2005 Galileo (IRE) – Park Express (IRE) (Ahonoora GB) Standing: Darley, VIC Ph: (03) 5799 9001 www.darley.com.au 2009 fee: $33,000 (incl gst)

A horse who struck form early and who went right on with it at three – and a the highest level. Great ability, outstanding pedigree and handsome at 16.2hh. Little wonder New Approach is one of Victoria’s more expensive stallions for 2009. Making Darley his home, New Approach – crowned Joint World Champion in 2008 and European Champion 2Y0 Colt

– really knew where the line was, winning eight of his 11 starts. And no less than five of his successes came at Gr.1 level – the Epsom Derby, the Champion Stakes, the Irish Champion Stakes, the Dewhurst Stakes and the National Stakes. Now that is quality! One of the European Champion 3Y0 Galileo’s 58 stakes winners, New Approach is a son of the Irish Co-Champion 2Y0 Filly/UK

Champion 3Y0 Filly Park Express. A Gr.1 winner, she has fared exceptionally well at stud – also producing the Japanese Gr.1 winner Shinko Forest (sire of 15 stakes winners) an the Irish Gr.3 winner Dazzling Park. Park Express is a half sister to the Listed winner Myra’s Best, dam of the local Gr.3 winner Forest Express – in turn grandam of the European Gr.1 winner Waky Nao.

SAINT THOMAS

Bay, 1999 Danehill (USA) – Nuwirah (USA) (Pleasant Colony USA) Standing: Woodwinds Farm, QLD Ph: 0432 591 564 www.woodwindsfarm.com.au 2009 fee: $3,300 (incl gst)

There are a number of unraced stallions standing A $600,000 Easter yearling who displayed enough natural ability to warrant an offer from Hong Kong, Saint Thomas returns home to Australia this spring. We didn’t get to see much of him locally but he was a horse quickly put his talent on display – recording an easy debut win at Sale before two placings at Moonee Valley. Going on to win at metropolitan level in Sydney, he then headed to Hong Kong where he won two races at 1200m and 1400m at competitive Shatin. A 16.1hh bay, Saint Thomas is

a son of super stallion Danehill – sire of an amazing 249 stakes winners including 88 Gr.1 winners. Bred on a 3 X 3 cross of His Majesty, Saint Thomas is a full brother to the Goodwood Handicap-Gr.1 winner Keeper who has fared so well from his Cambridge Stud base – siring 115 winners from 188 starters including the Gr.1 winners Keepa Cruisin, Insouciant and Linky Dink. His sister Jacqwin meanwhile is the sire of the Randwick & Rosehill Guineas-Gr.1 winner Metal Bender. His grandam Secretarial Queen by Secretariat was a Listed winner and her daughter Louju produced the dual Gr.1 winner Castledale. in Victoria this season and new

to the ranks this spring is this big bay son of the Nureyev stallion Black Hawk. A dual Gr.1 winner sprinter/ miler who won nine races in Japan, Black Hawk – son of the outstanding Northern Dancer stallion Nureyev – fared nicely during his time at Eliza Park. Siring 60 winners from 105 starters, Black Hawk has been best represented by the stakes winners St Trinians, Insistence and Zeta Black. Light Hawk is a son of the multiple city winning Sir Tristram line mare Light Start, half sister to the NZ Derby Trial-LR winner Mohican Brave. Another of her sisters is the dam of the AJC Oaks/ Metropolitan Handicap-Gr.1 winner Coco Cobanna.

SOUTHWESTERN HEAT (USA)

Chestnut, 2004 Gone West (USA) – Xtra Heat (USA) (Dixieland Heat USA) Standing: Willowbend Stud, QLD Ph: 0438 114 134 www.willowbend.com.au 2009 fee: $4,400 (incl gst)

One of the mighty Mr Prospector’s best racing and sire sons – the Gr.1 winner Gone West passed away only a few weeks ago. And what a mark he left – 91 stakes winners including 12 Gr.1 winners. And he is a proven sire of sires which is why this fellow, new to

Queensland, is bound to find his niche. A strong chestnut bred on the highly successful Mr Prospector/Northern Dancer cross, Southwestern Heat was a consistent galloper – winning four of 17 with a further nine placings to his credit. Successful at Listed level over 1200m, he was also Gr.3 placed and his pedigree is an exciting one – his dam the outstanding race mare Xtra Heat.

Crowned US Champion 3Y0 Filly, the daughter of Dixieland Heat won an astounding 26 races including the Prioress Stakes-Gr.1. At stud she is faring well, her first three foals all black type performers. Other stakes winners from this family include Shonda’s Girl, Wood Nymph, Port Wine, Fish Nest, Big Decision and Goldigger’s Dream.

STOCKADE

Bay, 2004 Redoute’s Choice – Our Side Shown (Snippets) Standing: Moranjee Stud, QLD Ph: 0419 022 469 www.moranjeestud.com.au 2009 fee: $4,500 (incl gst)

One of the eye-catchers at the 2006 Easter Sale, this well related son of super sire Redoute’s Choice (54 stakes winners) caught the eye of Cambridge Stud’s Sir Patrick Hogan who laid down $1.2 million to secure him. Placed under the care of Lee Freedman, Stockade did not take long strike form – second up as a three-year-old taking out a maiden at Ballarat. From there he rose quickly

54

www.tracktotrack.com

through the grades, two starts later winning over 2025m at Cranbourne before relishing the 2200m of the Geelong Derby Trial Stakes-LR. In that race proving 1½ lengths too good for his rivals, Stockade appeared to have a bright future as a stayer but after finishing unplaced in the VRC DerbyGr.1 he was not raced again. Which was a shame as he is from a family whose members are known for their toughness and longevity – his half brother being the popular grey Omintrader, Listed winner of no less than 27 races.

His dam our Side Show, daughter of the influential Snippets, is a full sister to the stakes winners Cheval Place, Snippet’s Girl (dam of the Listed winner Academy Dancer and grandam of stakes winner Royal Babe) and Snippets’ Show (grandam of the NZ Gr.1 winner Fully Fledged). Other members of this family include the stakes winners Show Barry, Rouquin, Patpong, Spring Theme, Bold Warrior, Lookatmelads and the exciting Queenslander Chakvetadze who has not tasted defeat in six outings.
