And, although we’ve gone to a press a couple of days prior to Black Caviar strutting her stuff in the Lightning Stakes at Flemington, securing one like her over the four days of sales will be the aim of everyone on the complex. The mare is clearly the best advertisement for Inglis’ Melbourne operation – hell, she’d be the best marketing tool for any auction house in the world! – but the aura around Black Caviar has now well and truly transgressed our patch of turf.

I thought the best illustration of this incredible horse’s impact on the population at large was a colleague telling me the other day how his young son had asked whether Black Caviar would race in the Melbourne Cup. Yes, we can giggle at the naivety, but tell me any other year when a non-racing person was talking about Melbourne Cups in February? In this issue we have a photographic tribute – through Bruno Cannatelli’s eye – to this truly remarkable racehorse without one word of descriptive text to introduce or explain. They say a picture tells a thousand words, which is good … because in terms of superlatives, she’s run me to a standstill.

SHARKBITE The first crop of yearlings by Eliza Park based stallion, SHARKBITE, are up for grabs at major 2012 sales and have proven to be very popular. It's little wonder why unbeaten at two and a stakes winner at Caulfield as a 4YO, Sharkbite is by Champion Sire and sire of sires, Redoute's Choice, from a family that is pure racing royalty and a sires' pedigree at that.

John VINCENT

INDUSTRY PROFILE

Walking the walk It’s somewhat typical that John Vincent lists the people he has worked for being among his greatest achievements. Sure, there’s more than a hint of pride when asked to recall a virtual lifetime in the world of thoroughbreds, but there’s definitely no soapbox posturing on how he was responsible for helping make some greats even greater. After hanging up the reins last June, the ever modest JV is just happy to reflect on a journey that repaid his loyalty, tenacity and toil with universal industry respect.

Y

OU WOULDN’T believe John Vincent is 70 years old. He could easily pass for a bloke 20 years … hang on, 30 years younger.

Matter of fact, he still regularly rides his bike into Richmond from his home in Hobartville in Sydney’s outer west. And, yes, it’s not the Tour de France, but still an admirable pedal when you consider most of his peers would be looking for the car keys. It’s ironic really when you consider that’s how it all started. Well, the bike riding part. Growing up in a strictly working class family – one of seven kids – John had a paper run when he was 11 years old, operating out of the English village of Linton:

some 15 kilometers from the world famous racing centre at Newmarket. Although his ‘pedigree’ didn’t point to a career in

(One imagines as to the status of today’s scout movement if the price of admission was yanking weeds out of what was surely a very long driveway).

TYREEL

THE MAJORITY OF THOSE LEGIONS OF STABLE STAFF WHO HAVE LABORED UNDER HIS GAZE IN THE DECADES HENCE WOULD BE THE FIRST TO PROFFER THAT HE’S TOUGH BUT FAIR. PUT IN THE YARDS AND BE REWARDED IN KIND. the equine world, one of the stops on John’s paper route was a place called Hadstock – owned by an ex Army officer called Dr Jock Dawson.

Anyway, this was no normal scout group – they were mounted scouts and John reckons they were the only ones in Britain and, for that matter, Europe.

The way John describes him – with the big walrus mustache and all – you conjure up images of one of those tough and gruff Sergeant Majors from the movies. And that’s probably not far off the mark.

He was taught to ride (competing in gymkhanas and cross country events) and because Dr Dawson was a government veterinary surgeon (and often called upon to lecture at Cambridge), John picked up quite a few tricks of the trade that held him in good stead in the many years to come.

When he was collecting the paper money at Hadstock, John had noticed there were a bunch of kids out back, dressed up like mounties and milling around the stables. He asked Dawson about them and was gruffly informed they were scouts and if he wanted to join them he’d have to muck out stables, clean bridles and weed the driveway to prove his worth. 12

www.tracktotrack.com

But, more than anything, it was good Doctor’s professionalism, almost obsessive attention to detail and incredible work ethic that would mould John’s approach to both his career and daily life. It’s probably reasonable to say that John has never

INDUSTRY PROFILE suffered fools gladly and definitely not lazy fools. That said, the majority of those legions of stable staff who have labored under his gaze in the decades hence, would be the first to proffer that he’s tough but fair. Put in the yards and be rewarded in kind. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves … After finishing up at school, John got work at a chicken processing company and then an engineering factory, but by then he’d been well and truly bitten by the horse bug and applied for a job at Moyns Park. The farm was run by Captain Robert Dalby, a former member of the Queen’s Household Cavalry, and John fancied his chances despite his only experience with horses coming via his time in the scouts.

Clearly Sir Philip wasn’t short of a quid as his family owned the diamond company, DeBeers, and John recalls the stud well: “It was a private stud with a beautiful home, magnificent facilities with thatched stables … immaculately laid out. “They stood the stallion Test Case who was a brother to the dam of another of their mares in Klairessa, in turn the mother of legendary Kiwi mare Eight Carat. I spent three very, very happy years with the Oppenheimers.” But then John began getting calls from an old mate who had shifted to Canberra, encouraging him to turn his aspirations south of the equator. So, on the famous ‘assisted package’, John and his young family migrated to Australia

Still, loaded with a reference from Dr Dawson and well schooled in army lore, John landed the gig at Moyns Park which was owned by Mrs Jo Bryce, heiress to The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company and reportedly one of the world’s richest women at the time. (The story goes that family friend, Ian Fleming, put the final touches to his James Bond novel, From Russia With Love, while staying in the Moyns Park manor). Nearing the end of the 1960s, John decided to move on and was employed by a Swiss businessman to look after his warmbloods, but eventually landed a job at Sir Philip and Lady Oppenheimer’s Hascombe Stud.

JOHN WITH JIM FLEMING

in 1972, but the supposed job he had waiting for him was no longer waiting. After doing some maintenance work for a while, he ended up as a serviceman for Flick Pest Control. (The author considered his time at Flick to be quite ironic given the amount of ‘pests’ >> www.tracktotrack.com

13

INDUSTRY PROFILE – ie. tyre kickers – he would encounter at yearling sales in the years to come, but John, typically, played that with a straight bat … polite almost to a fault!)

employment at Carretta Park in the Adelaide Hills and was appointed stud manager after only a few months. At the time the stud stood Lord of the Dance, Native Prince, Ardistaan, Holborn (“an absolute bugger of a horse”), Battle Sign and Rough ‘n’ Tumble, but – lo and behold – the stud was struggling financially and after a few years went into receivership. Fortunately the Vincents had saved their pennies and took a trip back to England for a holiday and, at the Tattersalls Sales, John was introduced to the larger than life FrenchArmenian, Souren Vanian.

RORY'S JESTER

Anyway, John eventually got jack of it and, in early 1974, returned to England and a position at the Egerton and Lordship Studs at Newmarket which was owned by Sir Reginald Narcissus and Lady Macdonald-Buchanan. At the time they stood the great Brigadier Gerard and Royal Palace (which was ridden to victory in the Epsom Derby and 2000 Guineas by our very own George Moore). However, after a few months winter hit and John started missing the Australian sunshine: “I was going out to work of a morning with two pairs of trousers, gloves and a balaclava. I was starting to regret my decision to return to England and after only eight or nine months, we packed our bags and headed back down under.” With the compass pointing to South Australia, John found 14

www.tracktotrack.com

Somewhat rotund, short, balding and gripping an ever present cigar, Souren Vanian was a true character, but according to John he had a tremendous grasp of international pedigrees. The owner and / or breeder of a number of Group One winners, Souren had won the prestigious French double – the Prix de la Salamandre and Grand Criterium with a horse called Manado which, as it turns out, now had a stud at Sandy Hollow in NSW named after him. Souren stood Piccolino, Some Lute and Tipperary Fixer at Manado and soon convinced John to run the stud for him. In 1986, Souren asked John to check out the Crown Jester horse, Rory’s Jester, which had won the previous year’s Golden Slipper for legendary trainer, Colin Hayes, and had raced on to multiple Group success at three. “Rory’s Jester was at Lindsay Park and Colin, the gentleman

INDUSTRY PROFILE that he was, couldn’t have been more helpful. The horse turned out badly in his knees but was an extremely powerful bugger and after all, he was a Slipper winner … and Slipper winners make good sires. What’s more, the vet I took with me couldn’t find too much wrong with him. “So, Souren decided to buy him and I think, from memory, Colin kept 10 shares.” John got to work: “We did a lot of promotion and his first season at stud was 1986. Souren supported him with a lot of dour, staying mares by Crepello, Double Jump, Never Say Die and the like and when his foals began arriving they were super types – just like their sire. Very strong. “They grew into impressive yearlings that you could do anything with: they would lunge, were clean winded and had superb temperaments – easy to prepare. I had a really good feeling about them.

“Then the phone rings the next night … Colin again. This time he wants to know about the farm, the acreage, water supplies, facilities – you name it. “Three nights in a row he rang and then eventually the receivers got in contact with me to say that Colin had made a successful tender for Manado.” Shortly after, international breeding giant, Robert Sangster jumped on board and the stud – expanded by a ‘neighbouring’ 1500 acres (590ha) – was re-badged Collingrove Stud. Consequently, it wasn’t very long before Collingrove was absolutely flying with Rory’s Jester attaining superstardom in the breeding shed and, by the time of his death in March 2007, had produced 76 stakes winners at a black type to winners strike rate of some 9%.

“Rory’s Jester would produce four stakes winners in that first season – Apollo Wonder, Bounce Again, Rory’s Image and White Crest – and become the Champion Freshman Sire of 1989/90.” Sadly, it wasn’t enough to save Souren Vanian who had hit a brick wall financially and had to put Manado Stud up for tender. “Next thing I’m sitting at home one night and I get a call from Colin Hayes who was in Dubai at the time. He wanted to know about Rory’s and how things were going generally.

MOYNS PARK

The involvement of Sangster saw Collingrove expand its stallion roster with the likes of Bluebird, Persian Heights, Scenic and Turtle Island, while some of the high quality mares on stud included Belle Chanson, Biscay Bird, >> www.tracktotrack.com

INDUSTRY PROFILE Burletta, Campbell Fever, Captiva, Jullene, Kensington Gardens, Nunnery Walk and the super fast Special. Not surprisingly, John Vincent was in his element and testimony to his regard from peers, he was appointed to the committee of the Hunter Valley Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association and eventually became its Chairman.

at Castlereagh. At the time I hadn’t heard that the Collingrove stallions were shifting to Victoria so I told Jim ‘no thank you’. “However, shortly after, I found out what was happening and sought out Jim to see if the offer was still on the table. He said yes.” Thus began something of a golden era for Tyreel Stud,

DURING JOHN VINCENT’S TENURE, TYREEL CONSISTENTLY TOPPED THE SALES AVERAGE AT THE HOLY GRAIL OF YEARLING SALES – EASTER – AND NO LESS THAN 11 YEARLINGS ATTAINED SEVEN FIGURES: REMARKABLE CONSISTENCY IN WHAT WE’D ALL AGREE IS SUCH A VOLATILE MARKET. (In 1999, John was duly acknowledged with the ‘Services to Industry’ Award, a “very humbling experience and something I’m immensely proud of”). John would spend 15 years at Manado/Collingrove – nine of those with CS Hayes – but “the competition among major studs became intense with the influx of shuttle stallions and both Colin and Robert (Sangster) began turning their attention to establishing a stud at Nagambie in Victoria”. But, as so often it does, destiny stepped in: this time in the shape of supermarket giant, administrator extraordinaire and breeding supremo, Jim Fleming … “Jim approached me at the Gold Coast Magic Millions in January 1997 with an offer to run his Tyreel Stud 16

www.tracktotrack.com

particularly in that most competitive of cauldrons – the sales ring. “Before I arrived at Tyreel, Jim (Fleming) had bred Bint Marscay, Kenny’s Best Pal, Filante, Keltrice, Mr Vitality, Rose of Danehill, Rose of War, Stella Cadente and Wrap Around – and that was just the tip of the iceberg. “Then, after I came on board, Jim started buying up some of the best mares around … Bonanova is a good example. Jim bought her from Neville Begg and she went on to win the Emirates Stakes-G1, increasing her value enormously. “Jim’s son Dean, who took over Tyreel after his father died, also bred the dual Group One winner, Republic Lass and he has only served to enhance the farm’s reputation as the breeder

INDUSTRY PROFILE of Champion Rocket Man.”

sprinter,

Typically, John is reluctant to blow his own trumpet when it comes to the role he played at Tyreel, but during his tenure the farm consistently topped the sales average at the Holy Grail of yearling sales – Easter – and no less than 11 yearlings attained seven figures: remarkable consistency in what we’d all agree is such a volatile market.

So, where to from here? “I’m involved with a group – Probus – whose members are from all walks of life and we do a lot of travelling. In September last year I went overseas … visiting family and friends: played the real tourist for a change, although I did catch up with Dean (Fleming) at the Tattersalls Sale.

In 2008, John put the spit and polish on the Redoute’s Choice colt from Snowdrift which was knocked down to Darley for $2.5 million, while mere weeks later, Coolmore Australia forked out a record $5 million for the Tyreel mare Milanova. “Being head hunted by Jim Fleming was a real turning point of my career. I consider Jim to be the greatest person I worked for and he had a very big influence on me.”

MILANOVA

Putting the cue in the rack at the end of June last year, JV was widely lauded for his contribution to the industry: let’s face it, such is the nature of the beast that those who work behind the scenes are rarely – adequately – acknowledged for their deeds. However, his peers know and, for John Vincent, that’s more than enough.

“As for the future, I plan on joining Riding for the Disabled and also a group called Horse Rescue … they’re always looking for volunteers.”

The most valuable lessons he has picked up along the way …?

Happy trails John Vincent.

Any plans for consultancy work? Not until I get the travelling bug out of my system,” he adds with a laugh.

“Try to do your best at all times and listen to your peers. Treat people’s property as though it’s yours and, most importantly, don’t give up when the going gets tough.” www.tracktotrack.com

BUCKLEE’S SIX CHANCES G

reta West operation, Bucklee Farm, only has a relatively concise draft of six for the Melbourne Premier but it’s a tremendous mix of the tried and true and the new and blue(ribbon). Among the ‘established’ are the fillies by highly prolific Victorian-based sires such as Bel Esprit (Lot 758 – out of a three times winning half sister to stakes winner Hazard from the family of Kinjite) and Bianconi (Lot 687 – from a half to stakes placed Delago’s Lad and city winner Brom’s Girl [8 wins] and hailing from the family of Horse of the Year All Along). Yet, those highlights aside, it’s the yearlings by up and coming stallions such as Henrythenavigator, Dylan Thomas, Hard Spun and Kaphero that will also drag lookers to Barn H.

The Henrythenavigator filly (Lot 500) is a half sister to four winners out of a half sister to the memorable Group One winner Diamond Shower, while the Kaphero colt (Lot 771) is out of a half sister to the lightning quick stakes winner Spellmaker. Meanwhile, the Dylan Thomas filly (Lot 776) is a half sister to four winners – from four to race – including the city winner of six in Allervite: complemented perfectly by the Hard Spun colt (Lot 782) a half brother to three winners including current multiple stakes placed Broken. The Hard Spun colt is in the last 10 lots of the sale, but certainly enough to keep the buyers sticking around.

illford Thoroughbreds is one of the ‘younger’ vendors at Oaklands Junction … but in name only. Millford’s proprietors, Richard Kerry and Jarrod Byers, only launched their boutique operation in 2007, but the pair boast many years experience at the sharp end of the thoroughbred business. Even more importantly, Millford has the respect of peers and buyers alike and it and if they didn’t already have everyone looking before, they certainly will this year.

After all, Millford prepared and sold last year’s Cox Plate winner, Pinker Pinker who was part of its 2009 Melbourne Premier draft and sold to Greg Eurell for $120,000. P INKER PINKER - PREPARED & SOLD BY MILLFORD Now, that would look good on anyone’s resume and it’s fairly safe to assume that Greg will be making his way to Barn B at Oaklands Junction again! This time around Millford will be offering 15 youngsters, representing the elite of Australia’s stallion talent … indeed, kicking off the draft with Lot 33, a Fastnet Rock colt from a half sister to stakes winners Si Senor and Bello Signor (14 wins). Other standouts include sons and daughters of established sires such as Lonhro (Lot 530 – the second foal of a winning

BURNEWANG ON TOP

F

or a farm that only commenced sending yearlings to market in 2009, Cathy Hains’ Burnewang North Pastoral has come a long, long way in a very short time. Topping the 2010 Melbourne Premier by average, the Rochester showpiece then came out last year with an equal sale topper: a Fastnet Rock colt which was sold to Lloyd and Nick Williams for $340,000. What does the crystal ball hold for 2012? Well, looking at the Burnewang North draft for Melbourne you’d only get Black Caviar odds about them enjoying another successful trip to Oaklands Junction. Just look at the lineup … starting the show is a typical Tale of the Cat filly (Lot 25), the second foal of Les Ry Leigh whose own two dams are stakes horses with 21 winners between them. Snitzel (sire of recent Inglis Premier winner Snitzerland) is one of the hottest young stallions in Australia and his half sister (Lot 62) to current stakes horse Amerryking and five other winners will surely have plenty of admirers. This is also the family of Classic winner Mystiko, who if memory serves, was bred by Cathy Hains’ father David. Talk about pedigree! Little needs to be said about Lot 105, a colt by Champion Sire, Encosta de Lago and a half brother to Champion German 2YO, Narooma. Oh, except to say that he’s bred on a similar cross to that of exciting young sire Northern Meteor.

24

www.tracktotrack.com

Statue of Liberty’s headliner, Hay List, is built like the proverbial brick outhouse and Lot 130 is very much in the same mould. And, apart from the colt’s ‘presence’, they’ll also like that he’s a half brother to current stakes horse Bulwer Bay from the dual stakes winner Petite Oiseau. Charge Forward is living up to his name via the likes of Headway, Response, Shrapnel and co. and this filly has winner written all over her: the first foal of a 4-time winning sprinter/miler – in turn the daughter of stakes winner Calming, it’s worth noting that the second, third and fourth dams have produced 15 winners from 16 to race. Lot 277 – from the stakes placed Encosta de Lago mare Swinging Babe – is the first of the Choisirs and Burnewang North rates the colt highly, considering him to be a real 2YO prospect, while the other Choisir colt (Lot 553) has thrown more to his damsire, Zabeel – not a bad thing when you consider this is the family of Sir Tristram’s Champion 2YO and Sire, Marauding. Karuta Queen and Doubtful Jack keep putting Not A Single Doubt’s name at the frontline and this filly (Lot 319) is likely to keep the ball rolling, being the first foal of winning mare Valentine Rose, in turn a close relation to Group One winning 2YO Rythmic Charm. The Group One winning sprinter, Magnus, has been hugely popular at stud – being a half brother to the dam of Black Caviar doesn’t hurt! – and he has two youngsters up for grabs:

(Lot 332) the half sister to four winners including Matt Ellerton’s city winner of five, Cool Diva from 2YO stakes winner Viva La Diva plus (Lot 505) the half sister to three winners from three to race including Randwick stakes winner Al Dhafra. You can see a lot of Marscay in this girl.

LOT 477

HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR (IRE) X COUP DE MAITRE

Lot 477, a Holy Roman Emperor colt, is from one of the traditional Hains’ inspired families, going back to third dam and Champion Filly and incredible source, Spirit of Kingston. Lot of black type on that page. Last but not least is the Street Sense filly (Lot 486), the second foal of a winning daughter of dual Group One winner Republic Lass. Winner of the Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, Street Sense is a first season sire by Street Cry who has already tasted considerable success in this country via Shocking and Whobegotyou. It’s a good one to finish off with: Burnewang North has ‘Street Sense’ and a whole lot of a street cred. Join the crowd outside Barn H!

BOMBORA’S BEST T

he promotional catchcry of “Only the best from Bombora Downs” is hardly an idle boast.

The Mornington Peninsula based farm is highly regarded for the many services provided, but none more so than for the quality of yearlings it presents annually at the Melbourne Premier. This year’s certainly no different with seven quality types up for grabs including

of city placed Success Express mare, Miss Evangeline, in turn a half sister to Champion sprinter, Apache Cat – winner of eight Group Ones. There’s also a pair of fillies by Choisir – whose female representatives include dual Group One winner Sacred Choice plus Group Two winners Hurried Choice, Gold Water and Champagne Harmony.

First cab off the rank is Lot 120, the chestnut from Paris Express who has already produced two recent winners in Dominator and Acclaimed and is a half sister to Group Two winner Burrito, plus Lot 616, the second APACHE CAT - CLOSELY RELATED TO LOTS 71 & 702 foal of a city placed winner in youngsters by established sires Lady Astor, from the family of such Lonhro, Bel Esprit, Choisir Diamond Shower and co. and Dash For Cash, along with The Dash For Cash colt (Lot the highly promising pair of 649) is from the Palace Music Artie Schiller and Hard Spun. mare Pals and is a half brother Kicking off the draft is Lot 71, to four winners including a Lonhro filly, the second foal stakes placed metropolitan

winners Jennifer, Palzago and Class Prevails, while Pals is a daughter of Sydney Cup winner Palace Revolt. Expect buyers to flock to Barn D for a gander at Lot 676, the Bel Esprit filly (yes, the Champion Victorian Sire has produced another filly of note at the Melbouren Premier) and this one is the second foal of Secret Cause, a dual winning half sister to multiple Group winner Pleasant Secret. It’s also the female line of Mr Prospector and Seattle Slew … a couple of good ones there! Lot 702 is from the second crop of Danzig Group One winner Hard Spun and is a half sister to two winners in Liger (6 wins) and Piece of the Sky and, like the Lonhro filly, is also is closely related to Apache Cat. Last, but definitely not least, is the filly by Artie Schiller (Lot 772), a full sister to the promising Grand Schiller out of dual winner Grand D’Oro, in turn a half sister to Group winners Man Of Illusion and Really Good. Shoot for the lucky 7!

MARANA'S MARVELLOUS FIVE

N

racoorte nursery, Marana Park, will present a relatively small draft for Magic Millions Adelaide on 13-14 March, but it’s a consignment bound to have considerable impact.. Opening the batting for Marana Park is a filly (Lot 117) by Reset (sire of 2011 Cox Plate winner Pinker Pinker) from the multiple Group winning mare

Autumn Jeuney. Given that two of Autumn Jeuney’s stakes victories were in Adelaide and this is her first foal, potential buyers will certainly be beating a path down to Barn 7. Others set to shine include the first foal (by Blue Diamond winner and freshman sire Reaan) out of 5-time winner Marana Majic, a daughter of stakes winner High Royale

(Lot 229); another first foal (by Blevic) from a multiple winner closely related to multiple Group winner Eureka Jewel (Lot 366); a Hemingway half brother to 4-time winner Carthy Road (Lot 390) and; a Bianconi half sister to six winners from six to race, out of the stakes winner High Royale (Lot 391).

COVER STORY

ELIZA PARK

TO SHINE IN MELBOURNE

T

HERE IS ALWAYS a great sense of anticipation about first season sires.

No-one knows if their progeny can run, so judgements are based on the walk, the ‘talk’, the looks and the pedigree books. A sire’s pedigree (coupled with performance) draws attention long before sale day, but if their yearlings are athletic with plenty of balance and a good walk, it’s amazing how soon the word spreads. Such is the case with Eliza Park’s two first season sires for 2012: Astronomer Royal and Sharkbite. Both boast impeccable pedigrees, both were stakes winners, both produce nice types and, the

SHARKBITE 26

www.tracktotrack.com

progeny of both caught the eye (and wallets) at last year’s weanling sales. Astronomer Royal clearly has the potential to go all the way and, based on the quality of his foals and the interest shown in them by leading buyers at 2011 weanling sales, the flashy bay served his biggest book of mares (106) last spring. And Astronomer Royal certainly ticks the first box in terms of pedigree: his sire, Danzig, produced near on 200 stakes winners at an amazing strike rate of 28.6% and his influence in the southern hemisphere is nothing short of phenomenal, largely through the deeds of the legendary Danehill, Chief’s Crown, Green Desert and co. Astronomer Royal joined Danzig’s 46 Group One winners world wide and became his final Classic winner after taking out the French 2000 Guineas (and was subsequently named Champion Miler). However, it was also his ability over the shorter courses that impressed the judges, finishing close up in the time honoured St James’ Palace Stakes-G1 behind Excellent Art and Duke of Marmalade and also running Europe’s best sprinters to less than a length – after being

COVER STORY held up at a vital stage – in the July Cup over 1200m. As you would expect, Astronomer Royal hails from a family rich in black type and is represented by 16 yearlings at the Melbourne Premier, including the first foal of a half sister to Champion 2YO and sire Myboycharlie (Lot 23) and the second foal of a half sister to Group One winner Military (Lot 515). One thing’s for certain … Astronomer Royal’s yearlings will have plenty of lookers! Buyers – including Mark Player, Damon Gabbedy and Paul Willetts – paid up to $90,000 for his weanlings last year, while the handful of yearlings sold so far have gone to the stables of Paul Perry, Dan Bougoure and leading Victorian trainer, Greg Eurell – who, fresh off a win with Pinker Pinker in the Cox Plate – forked out $260,000 for an Astronomer Royal yearling at the Gold Coast Magic Millions. As leading bloodstock agent, Paul Willetts, pointed out in the wake of securing an Astronomer Royal weanling: “They are athletic foals that look like they will keep going forward”. Meanwhile, Sharkbite has been hugely popular since arriving at Eliza Park, serving three figure books in the past two seasons. It’s not hard to work out why: firstly, when it was Sharkbite’s turn to be sold as a yearling he was knocked down for $900,000, indicative of his quality and athleticism! And, he performed … unbeaten in his only two starts as a juvenile, he ran three successive stakes

placings in the Melbourne spring before taking out the Lord Stakes-LR at Caulfield as a 4YO – defeating six stakes winners in the process. Yet, it is Sharkbite’s pedigree that elevates the horse to racing royalty: his sire, Redoute’s Choice, is the heir apparent to Danehill as is now the nation’s foremost source of sires. What’s more, Redoute’s Choice is currently staging a battle royal with another son of Danehill in Fastnet Rock for the title of Australia’s leading sire, after winning the title – again – two seasons back. But, sireline, performance and physique aside – albeit important factors – it’s Sharkbite’s female line that has most purists buzzing. Closely related to the Champion Banks Hill and her Group One winning siblings Intercontinental and Heat Haze, this is – tellingly – a sire’s pedigree with other relations including boom UK sire Dansili and, across the Atlantic, the exciting Leroidesanimaux, sire of last year’s Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom.

ASTRONOMER ROYAL

It certainly augurs well for the future that his progeny are very much in the mould of their sire! Sharkbite’s Melbourne yearlings include a half sister to this season’s 2YO stakes winner Travino (Lot 75), a colt from stakes winner Thousand Veils (Lot 296) and the second foal of a half sister to Group One winner Critic (Lot 652). Roll on Melbourne.

AI WATERHOUSE had nothing to lose. Her sole runners – No Looking Back and Driefontein – had crossed the line one, two in our summer’s richest plum, proving yet again that there are few alive that can master this miss when it comes to seeking out juvenile gold. Still, there was a lot riding on it as far as her two sets of owners were concerned: around $840,000 in monetary terms and, perhaps even more importantly, a lifetime of bragging rights. Surely Driefontein’s connections had seen No Looking Back veering out under pressure in the final 100m of the race and were unlikely to share jockey Tommy Berry’s reluctance to protest. >>

Somewhat appropriately, the outstanding mare, Mannerism, was bred at Barty’s Trevenson Park Stud at Maldon. She was just one of many.

Now, I’m sure that Ed would forgive us for saying that The Pug, Scrupules and Export Price weren’t exactly at the high end of the commercial scale, but Driefontein’s first four dams have produced 28 winners between them from just 32 to race, with each generation containing a stakes winner (or in Follow The Sails’ case, two of them).

That said, the most lingering legacy may come in the shape of Driefontein. Although Driefontein was bred by Christine and Richard Johnston’s highly successful Bylong Park Thoroughbreds – who also bred the runaway 2011 VRC Oaks winner and Fastnet Rock filly Mosheen – the rest, as they say, is Barty history. Driefontein’s dam, Follow Gold (by Export Price and sold to the eagle eyed Colm Santry for $100,000 at the 2005 Easter Broodmare Sale), was bred at Trevenson, as was Follow Gold’s dam, Follow The Sails (by Scrupules), and her dam Follow Through (by The Pug) AND her dam Lafarge. Indeed, the first five dams called Trevenson Park home, as did Export Price, The Pug and Scrupules.

Great man! Speaking of great, Fastnet Rock is certainly shaping up as a sire of the ages with eight Group One winners from just four crops of racing age. He’s pumping out winners at around 63% (7% stakes winners to runners) and progeny earnings are now well over $24 million. And, with $6.1 million in the bank already this season, Fastnet Rock is poised to capture the heavyweight title: a truly remarkable feat for a 10 year old stallion.

Driefontein deserves a wrap. When the easy way out was to go for a derivative of the sire and dam’s names – something like Gold Rock or Follow Fastnet – they’ve managed to name this filly after one of the world’s largest mineral resources. Email cesa@internode.on.net

Driefontein gold mine is located some 70 kilometres from Johannesburg in South Africa and throughout its 50 year history, has yielded some 100 million ounces of the shiny yellow stuff.

at $75,000 the cheapest of the Fastnet Rocks sold at the Gold Coast Magic Millions in 2011. After stepping out in two trials in Sydney last October, Waterhouse saddled up Driefontein in a 2YO Handicap at Randwick on 5 November. She was quickly marked as a prohibitive $1.45 favourite and raced right up to her starting price, scoring by three lengths. The win might well have garnered more attention if not for a horse called Black Caviar going around in the Patinack Classic at Flemington that day. Following the Randwick scamper, Driefontein was aside for eight weeks, but showed no signs of rust when returning in the $150,000 BJ McLachlan Stakes-G3 at Doomben on New Year’s Eve.

Everyone started paying much more attention after that. An excited Berry jumped off and told owners that the ‘explosive’ Driefontein had the race won in the first 100m and, encouragingly, possesses the not inconsiderable ability to relax. Headlines such as “Driefontein sizzles”, the “2YO to beat in Magic Millions” and “Gush of success” abounded in the following day’s media, while online betting firms slashed her price accordingly. Now with three from three and a seemingly profitable autumn ahead, Driefontein’s residual value as a broodmare – not to mention what she can win on the track – has her owners (including a number of first timers) all thinking that the horse ownership caper is not too shabby.

The

Libya

A push for racing’s revival We don’t often associate Libya with thoroughbreds. Media generated from the Arab state usually relates to disastrous regimes and, for Aussies old enough to remember, the Rats of Tobruk. However, as LISSA OLIVER discovers, the Libyan industry – lead by the Eshaab brothers – is staging a ‘fightback’ of its own.

I

N SOME COUNTRIES TORN BY conflict, as we have seen in Iraq, horseracing has in many ways benefited: serving as an escape from the troubles and attracting new racegoers. Sadly, this is far from the case in Libya, where the ‘Arab Spring’ of 2011 has had a disastrous affect on the thriving thoroughbred industry. Fortunately, it is often severe troubles that unite communities and force positive changes and this appears to be the situation in Libya. A case in point is Dr Amad Eshaab and his brother Radwan, who together own and operate Libya’s largest and most important thoroughbred stud, Al Shaab Stud in Tripoli. If Al Shaab is not a stud familiar to readers, two of its stallions should be. Among seven high class individuals are the Australians Back Draft and >> www.tracktotrack.com

RACING AROUND THE WORLD Brut Force. The impeccably bred 9YO, Back Draft, won three races at two and is by Testa Rossa out of Springfire, a good Snippets race mare out of the Champion filly Bravery. He stands alongside compatriot Brut Force, the Giant’s Causeway 9YO who boasts Zabeel’s Champion filly Champagne as his dam. Like all the stallions at Al Shaab their page is crammed full of Black Type, an indication that Libyan racing is going to be a major player in the coming years. Al-Mutazim (formerly known as Metternich (USA) ) is by Seeking The Gold out of the European Champion filly Valentine Waltz, from the heralded family of Last Tycoon, Tie Black, Zipping, Zelding and Beauty Is Truth. An older proven stallion is former leading British juvenile Raise A Grand, by Grand Lodge out of an Irish River mare; while Fawri is by Kyllachy out of a Danehill mare and Muraqeeb is a son of Mr Prospector out of a dam who is the result of a union between the two outstanding milers of their era in Britain, Kris and Al Bahathri. Possibly heading this starstudded bill is the Champion Argentinean racehorse Indio Glorioso, an 8YO by Honour And Glory out of the top Argentinean racemare Indianato, herself from a prolific Grade One winnerproducing maternal line. Not surprisingly, mares visit the stallions not only from Libya, but from Egypt and Tunisia, too. It is no accident that such an enviable collection of 52

blue bloods is standing in Tripoli. Dr Amad Eshaab is establishing a recognised Stud Book for Libya and is currently trying to establish a working relationship with the major European Jockey Clubs in order to implement all necessary regulations regarding the trade, travel,

and disease prevention, of thoroughbreds. He and Radwan can be seen regularly at Europe’s major breeding stock sales and they have a very particular shopping list, one centring on quality and improvement of the breed. Al Shaab was established in 2000: “We have been

breeding the thoroughbred for 12 years,” says Amad, “but there is no Libyan Stud Book up to now. We tried to establish one in 2004, but our thoroughbred industry at that time was of no interest to any of the other Associations.”

It is perhaps a commercial flaw that associations such as the International

Unusually for many of the African and Arabic countries, it is the thoroughbred and not the Arab that holds sway in Libya. “Libyan breeders have always preferred horses other than the Arab,” says Amad. “The Arab is a smaller horse and Libyans like the bigger horse, because we have traditional races that have always required size. Historically we have always crossbred the Arab with the thoroughbred to produce Anglo-Arabs. The Arab is not very famous here, for a long time Libyans have bred the Anglo-Arab.”

THOROUGHBRED INDUSTRY AT THAT TIME WAS OF NO INTEREST TO ANY OF THE OTHER ASSOCIATIONS. Federation of Horseracing Authorities are not so fast to assist countries they have no established trade with. The International Stud Book Committee is currently in the process of working with emerging racing countries and it can only be a matter of time before Libya joins the ever-expanding list within the European and Mediterranean Stud Book Liaison Committee.

With size and stamina traditionally taking prevalence, it was natural for the brothers to look for complementary pedigrees in their quest for stallions: “We started to breed from the speed horses,” Amad reveals, “that’s why we selected horses from Australia, Argentina and Britain. The pedigree and racecourse performance was very important.” >> www.tracktotrack.com

RACING AROUND THE WORLD Amad and Radwan have now found themselves at the forefront of rebuilding the Libyan Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association and establishing the Stud Book: “We are getting lots of support from all of the industry and as I am rebuilding the TBA I am the voice for our industry,” admits Amad. It is a huge responsibility, particularly

industry,” he continues, “I feel, from all the owners who speak to me, that we have a very nice future, but it is not going to be achieved very fast. We were 41 years under the Gaddafi regime so that is not easy for us. We need international support and investment.” Amad and Radwan know first hand the final blows

coupled with his existing duties as General Manager of Al Shaab Stud and his job as a veterinary surgeon. Perhaps it’s the latter role that gives Amad such a pleasant bedside manner and, far from being daunted by the task in hand, he is full of infectious energy and enthusiasm. One cannot help but be filled with optimism after just a short time in his company. “I would like our TBA to have an international role, like other Associations,” he hopes, “We have over 1,000 breeders here and they have given me, through the TBA, the authorisation to speak on their behalf. We are not looking for government support, we have a lot of private investment and hope to attract more, we have a large industry and this can support investment and employment. “We believe we can rebuild again and we can support each other within the 54

dealt by the Gaddafi regime and were forced to cross the border into Tunisia in May of last year, unable to return until September: “52 horses were taken from us by Gaddafi’s son,” reveals Amad, “they were distributed in many different cities without documentation and we can’t find even one of the missing horses.” It was in trying to help and support the industry that the brothers brought such unwelcome attention upon the stud. As Amad points out: “I sent an email to the Australian Ambassador here in Libya looking for support. I explained we have no Islamic stronghold nor AlQaeda presence and we support the freedom of the Libyan people, so please support us. This put us in a very critical position and we were left in no doubt that Gaddafi was looking. The Ambassador supported us and said on television that he knew the Libyan

They may have only returned to Tripoli in September, but the brothers were quick to restore business as usual at Al Shaab Stud, despite the heavy losses in their broodmare band. In December they were back at Tattersalls Breeding Stock Sale in Newmarket, Britain, and purchased nine mares. “We are looking for more ways in which we can support the Libyan owner,” Amad says, “and one way is to bring in horses from Britain to improve our breed. We would like to import many quality

broodmares, based on their pedigree and race record, which should be at least Group Three standard.” This isn’t as easy as it sounds, even if budget allows and the right horse is available. “The main problem is that we have no air cargo from Europe to Tripoli, so we have to send a box [float] by sea and overland via Genoa and to Newmarket. This takes time. It’s more than 150 hours from Newmarket to Tripoli and this is very hard on mares, particularly any mare foaling 1 February. It also costs a lot. Until we have a good connection with Europe by air cargo it is very difficult. Tripoli is only three hours from Newmarket by air.” Whatever problem is presented by the lack of air cargo, it doesn’t quite apply to other Libyan breeders, thanks again to the leadership of the Eshaab brothers. Al Shaab is not only an important stud farm, but also a thoroughbred auction house. “We do a lot of foaling here for other breeders and we hold a local auction here, too,” Amad explains, “the sale here is very popular. The first thoroughbred auction was held in Libya in 1974, but it was then stopped by Gaddafi until we managed to reinstate it in 2009.” It was Al Shaab Stud that staged the renewed sales, held in March and October of 2009 and 2010. Not surprisingly, there was no 2011 renewal, but the sale has returned to the >>

stud this year, to be held on 17 March. The October sale of 2010 attracted buyers both locally and from Egypt and Tunisia. One of the visitors was David Chester, Sales Director of Magic Millions, who commented: “We conduct business in

many countries around the world and found Libyan friendship, warmth and hospitality second to none. The conduct of the Al Shaab Sale was outstanding and extremely professional. All the presentation and health of all sale horses was up to world standard, an amazing achievement considering the short length of time the Australian sale horses have been in the country.” All up, 85% of the catalogue changed hands, with Al Shaab Stud the vendor of the seven top lots. What might come as a surprise to those in well-established racing countries is the quality of the sale and the figures involved. The sales topper was a colt by Raaqi out of a Polish Navy mare 56

that made 85,000 Libyan dinar, a healthy A$63,677. The average was an equally respectable A$26,308, both figures twice that of the 2009 returns, showing that Amad and Radwan’s aim to improve the breed is certainly working. David Chester has pledged support in exploring better airfreight options between Libya and Australia. There remains only the acceptance of the Stud Book by the European and Mediterranean Stud Book Liaison Committee to assure the future of Libyan racing and breeding. “We have a lot of support and cooperation from other breeders,” says Amad, “we explain to them that we must breed and race in the right way and we are in constant communication with other countries. We would like support and assistance from important countries like Ireland and Britain and anyone in a position to help us rebuild. We need to have documentation in place to enable us to comply with European regulations for travel and trade, we need to get that certification in place.” If anyone can achieve this, it is Dr Amad Eshaab. “I’m a vet, so this is my hobby and my job. We are the first, and only, major stud in Libya. We have a very big veterinary clinic here with state-of-theart equipment. We want to help others rebuild their studs and become like ours.” It is said with passion and one cannot help but believe the Eshaab brothers will achieve their aims sooner rather than later.
