This is big business: even if you won’t be able to afford the siblings to Black Caviar, So You Think and Makybe Diva, you’ll be putting in the yards trying to find the next one. And they don’t come cheaply – based on last year’s figures you’ll have to find (on average) around $180k to shop. But that’s at one end of the scale, while the other is demonstrated by this month’s Stable Favourite – the Canberra Cup winner Fill The Page. Ironically, she was purchased by the Inglis crew (big players and small) for a mere $12,000 at its Scone auction. So humble is pedigree that she was named in what many thought was a vain hope to put some black type on the catalogue page. Despite the type enhancement, it’s unlikely any of that family will make it to Easter, but by the very nature of this industry, all of the owners wouldn’t miss it.

YEARLING SALES FEATURE

The CIRCUS

comes to TOWN ‘Ringmaster’ Christie Woodard, is the consummate professional and has been an avid student of bloodstock sales since Danehill was a pup. Here she reveals the triumphs and tragedy and the serious and silliness associated with selling future racehorses. Let the show begin!

U

sing the ‘circus’ analogy is fairly apt for yearling sales. We see it all.

After hauling in the crew, gear and animals the excitement and anticipation begins to mount. The gates open and enter the performers; the ringmaster, dancing horses, clowns, jugglers, tight rope walkers, and some pretty impressive acrobats; and if you’re really lucky, a bit of fairy floss at the end of it! The cry of sale-o, sale-o brings everyone running but let me tell you, by that time everything is in the lap of the gods (or, more realistically, in the back pockets of paying customers). It’s the hectic 5 or 6 days leading up to that point that make all the difference for us as yearling consignors; and it’s not all hot dogs and skittles. OK, here it is … a little insight to the life of yearling consignor.

10

www.tracktotrack.com

YEARLING SALES FEATURE

GETTING READY

INSPECTIONS

Snooze button? - forget it! We’re out there early, taking the horses out for a walk while their boxes are being done, waters changed and feeds put in. The running order of the next lot of processes differs, but essentially we will have all the horses groomed and polished, feet cleaned and (perhaps) dressed, have all the headstalls and leads out at the ready and staff breakfasted and uniformed … all by 8:30am to 9am.

Then the inspections start: it doesn’t matter how organised you are, potential buyers have a tendency to ‘hunt’ in packs. It’s the nature of the sales that you’ll either have staff sitting around, or run off their butts.

For a draft such as our Melbourne group (around 30 horses), this will mean a 5am start AT the complex. The amount of tack required to perform these tasks for larger drafts is simply phenomenal, and great team work is paramount to achieve this in a timely, orderly and safe manner.

Drawing closer to sale days, with blisters forming and the soles of your shoes wearing out, lunch becomes a long forgotten memory and the ‘front’ person is flat out juggling horses in every direction. Maybe you’ll get a sanga on the run around 2pm – if you’re lucky. Quashing a common belief among sellers to the contrary, most potential buyers will head into sales inspections wanting to LIKE every horse. The trick is to take advantage of that attitude. It is in that moment of time, when they first clap eyes on a horse that you need to have their attention and hold it. It’s only a matter of seconds before they start writing the likes and dislikes on their page. What we are all looking for is that first impression be positive, so that they stay in the “wanting to like the horse” zone. Most buyers will grade by numbers, keeping in mind certain attributes they can or cannot accept at the end of that inspection. Tip: good walking horses will always get their attention. So the inspection is going along swimmingly and next thing the (potential) buyer’s phone rings! The call >> www.tracktotrack.com

11

YEARLING SALES FEATURE has to be answered, but trying to show a yearling to a distracted shopper is far from ideal. If possible I like to halt the inspection until the phone call is complete, rather than allow the inspection to continue with the buyer trying to do two things at once (unless of course it is a woman who will be more than capable of multi tasking; Sorry fellas, I just had to put that in!) Another thing to keep in mind is that buyers hate having sellers jamming a yearling’s attributes down their throat or waffling on and on and on… Frankly they are the judges and have a lot of horses to look at … and they don’t want – initially at least – inspections to drag on. However, advising of any pedigree updates or comments about a blemish and, being available if the buyer has any queries or such, is fine. Second round inspections provide a much better opportunity for friendly conversations and “discussion” about the horse. They’re obviously back because they like the individual already. And please don’t start telling them what they should be looking for! Hey, we’ve all been on racetracks and have seen top horses with what we deem to be average or poor conformation. Yet, drawing analogies at yearling sales is unacceptable. And yes, we all whinge about it, but time to move on … that is your market out there and you 12

www.tracktotrack.com

have to live with what that market’s selection criteria is: and this will include sound conformation.

BUYERS Mostly these good judges are trainers buying on behalf of clients, or punting a yearling to syndicate to their current client base, or to hook new clients. Also, there are professional syndicators who form syndicates and place the horses into particular racing stables making their cut on the way past.

YEARLING SALES FEATURE Bloodstock agents are generally given a budget and order specifications to buy on behalf of a private owner or group of owners earning a consultancy fee. Then there are the ‘pinhookers’ – who move the yearlings on in some other fashion such as ‘Ready to Run’ sales for their earn. The group we all love to see at the sales is the off shore buyers, looking to take yearlings back to their homelands. And, finally, there are those who do their own, shall we say, independent shopping.

CONFORMATION ISSUES As such, yearlings will need to have are fair bit going for them, and they will have to fit the purpose for which they have been purchased – for racing or profit margins: or both. A big proportion of that criterion will include sound conformation and free of risky faults. They will also need to be easy on the eye.

The least acceptable structural issues which buyers generally disparage will include being back at the knee, very upright or – worse – deviation in the fetlocks; another is bowing in the front legs, especially if associated with offset knees and sway backs (and yes we can all name some great horses in the past that have had sway backs, but try selling them!). Also up there are small feet, clubbed feet, badly distorted hooves ... did I mention the feet? Mild knee deviations and rotations, off set knees (as long as there is no sign of bowing and they land square when walking), may well be forgiven. Small horses are looked upon as acceptable as long as they have a good top and bone, and show promise of further growth. Sickled hocks and bone curvature on the hind legs are very much open to conjecture – some buyers can live with it, some most definitely can’t. Butt ugly horses with proportions all out of whack, or those very light in the bone, narrow chested, and no body mass on the >>

YEARLING SALES FEATURE frame (especially if they have signs of a disadvantaged upbringing) will be hard to move on.

sits in the scheme of things and buyers try to gauge the strength of the competition. Certainly there are plenty of

And then after all that, x-rays will come into play. These will sort out any niggling things buyers may visually see in the yearling, such as appley fetlocks. X-rays are a window to the structure of the yearling and quite often make or break a sale. This is another topic entirely, but it has become an important tool for buyers and even sellers to an extent if they are a lovely and clean set. Sometimes I feel there is too much emphasis on “pass or fail” as opposed to “Can I live with and manage that issue?” after the buyer receives their vet’s report on these x-ray results.

SHOW TIME Following last minute make up applications, grooming and preening of both handlers and yearling, with information stickers positioned on the hips (temporarily if there is too much show sheen!), the yearling makes its way to the parade ring, with vendors hot on their heels. Despite all the hype from the auctioneer after the reading of the conditions of sale, if you end up with Lot 1 … buddy you sure drew the short straw! It seems to be that the first few lots on any sale day may be greeted with trepidation. On the first day most sales go through a period of “testing the water” for about 30 lots or so, with vendors trying to anticipate where their yearling 14

www.tracktotrack.com

buyers that are only too happy to go out and spend their money early in the hope they pick up a “cheap” yearling in the sale, but sellers may have experienced solid inspections and think they can make a few bob by pushing up their reserves … and there be the problem. Similarly, the enthusiasm of buyers may also wane towards the end of the day with horses of lesser quality starting to struggle. Final pass in rates vary from year to year with most sales sitting at 1520%. Considering the main agenda of the vendor is to sell the yearling, this figure represents a lot of unsold horses in any single sale. For both the consignor and buyer, the greatest frustration is the setting of an unrealistic reserve price by the owner. This crucial decision can nullify the whole purpose of taking the yearling to the sales. Careful consideration should be given as to where this figure should be set. Enter the tight rope walker!

YEARLING SALES FEATURE If the yearling preparation is done well, with good supportive marketing and professional attitudes and practices at the sales themselves, then there is little more that can be done. Integrity as a seller is often a very underestimated promotional tool to support all the hard work. It is easy to lose sight of what we are trying to achieve, which is ultimately making money from that yearling, but in a way that keeps the customer coming back. Good horses within any price bracket will always sell well within the boundaries of that market. “X” Factor horses always get the market very excited, and these horses will often attract spirited bidding, with ultimately the yearling making extremely good money. For those yearlings, placement in the catalogue will make absolutely no difference.

Ohhh, how I love having one or two of those horses in the draft: It really gets the heart rate up! Over the long term there will be years when vendors cream it in the sale ring and smile like Cheshire cats, and other years they are lambs to the slaughter and come out if it with barely two bob to rub together. The years in between just bump along like the year before. Now, what will this year do? Who knows, but I say “ BRING IT ON”. See you at the circus! WALK THE WA ALK? Young Street, Randwick is Inglis’ nub of operations and houses some of the most knowledgeable pedigree minds on the planet so, in light of what is a very ‘light’ family, it would be safe to say that some of the buffs might have wondered what was in the water (Moet?) at Scone that day. www.equiineaautotrainer.coom.au

Arthur Inglis, his cousin and fellow director, Jamie Inglis, and CEO Mark Webster, Deane is kind of the back room guy, responsible for making sure that everything opens and shuts when it comes the organisation’s Information Technology. When the now 29 year old Deane joined the company back in 2004, a number of staff were involved in racing a horse and, industry newbie that he was, thought it was a good idea to jump on board – so to speak. Now, even the most diehard Inglis acolyte would hardly call Scone one of its banner auctions, but staff proxy in hand, they isolated a handy type at the Hunter Valley sale’s 2009 chapter: a filly by Danehill stallion, Dane Shadow, from the Canny Lad mare Dorothy Dinosaur. reednet Editor, Tara Madgwick, honed many of her abundant skills during her tenure with Inglis, and was naturally pleased with the great result for former workmates. She also paid tribute to Kitchwin Hills and its budding superstar in Dane Shadow. “Bred at Kitchwin Hills, she (Fill The Page) is the first foal from Canny Lad mare Dorothy Dinosaur, who is yet another modestly bred mare to benefit from the Dane Shadow upgrade. Her first three foals are all by Dane Shadow, the second of them being smart Melbourne winner Holdontoyahorses, who was fourth in the Group Three MRC Blue Diamond Prelude last year and this season’s 2YO filly Schaduw, who finished second on debut at Murray Bridge last Sunday (4 March) for the Richard Jolly stable.

DANE SHADOW

Fill the Page is the sixth stakes-winner for Dane Shadow, who has an amazing ability to spark up a seemingly lacklustre mare to produce a stakes-winner, which is how he’s risen from being a $7,700 service fee ‘wannabe’ sire to commanding a rock solid $16,500 service fee as a proven source of stakes horses.”

Two and a half years after purchasing the filly and little to show for it, you could have forgiven the crew for thinking that their pride and joy was never going to help fill the page: but them came some light through the gloom. Stepping out on a heavy track at Kembla on 8 October, Fill The Page fought off four other contenders to grab her maiden win … more Great Western than Moet maybe, but a win nevertheless. Reality bit with a five of 10 at Kembla a fortnight later, but it was a return to the winners’ enclosure on Melbourne Cup eve – this time closer to home at Queanbeyan – that has marked the real turning point for Fill The Page. From there she ran third at Canterbury, second at Rosehill and, after taking up a more prominent position throughout, scored by a head over 1900m at Canterbury on 24 December. COMMERCIAL

‘OPERATION’ Foal treatment backed by sales return

Research conducted by Kildare vet Kevin Corley of Anglesey Lodge Equine Hospital and his brother Martin was recently published by the Equine Veterinary Journal: a paper which will undoubtedly prove to be of great interest to anyone breeding thoroughbreds for commercial purposes, LISSA OLIVER points out.

C

urrently there is a prejudice that it’s not worth treating foals because they won’t then sell at auction, but Kevin and Martin have shown conclusively that this is far from the case. And during the extensive research, the pair has revealed one or two other interesting facts that will be sure to make breeders prick up their ears. Thoroughbred foals can suffer from a variety of ailments during their first year of life and, for the first time, Kevin and Martin Corley have conducted research to examine the long-term effects of these problems, allowing informed decisions

to be made by commercial operations at the outset of treatment. Several studies in the past have examined the racing performance of horses that were treated in hospitals as foals, but the aim of most thoroughbred breeders is not to race the offspring of their mares but to sell them. The Corleys have now shown that there is no price disadvantage of having been treated in a hospital prior to the age of 125 days for thoroughbred horses presented at public auction. Clearance rate and sales price are unaffected by treatment as a foal and this is true even when the sex of the foal and the nomination fee are taken into account. >>

Foals aged less than four months – presented to Anglesey Lodge Equine Hospital in Kildare, Ireland, between 1st January 2007 and 30th June 2008 – were studied. A spreadsheet was maintained for each foal, recording the complaint, final diagnosis, duration of treatment, final hospital bill and outcome of treatment. The Corley brothers also took into consideration the advertised stallion fee for the year of conception of each foal.

enterocolitis, colic, septic joints, a fractured pelvis and pneumonia. The average length of hospital stay for the foals was six days and ranged from one to 19 days. Sales data was then used for the foals presented for public auction between 1st January 2007 and 30th June 2010. If the horses were offered at more than one sale, the first sale that the horse was presented at was used. Data included whether the horse was sold, partially retained

The study showed there is no price disadvantage of foals having been treated in a hospital prior to the age of 125 days for thoroughbred horses subsequently presented at public auction The average age of the foals when hospitalised was 20 days, and 36 (57%) of the foals were aged less than seven days. Complaints were typical of the Anglesey Lodge case mix over the past five years, ranging from

or unsold, and the sales price or pass in price. Six controls were used for each subject, namely the three horses presented for sale immediately before and after the subject, while the sex of the animal and whether they were bred for Flat or National Hunt were also used in the evaluation. The Corley brothers found that of 227 foals treated, 171 (75%) were discharged from the hospital: 63 of those foals were presented for sale and came from 49 different studs. Many foals that did not make it to the sales were either kept to race or were sold privately. 49 Flat-bred horses went to the sales, representing 63% of the Flatbred foals that were treated and survived. 14 of the NHbred horses were presented for sales, representing 23%

26

www.tracktotrack.com

VETERINARY FeaturE

of the NH-bred foals that were treated and survived, however the data only included sales up to the age of two and most NH horses are sold as three or fouryear-olds. 19 animals were presented for sale as foals, 39 were taken to the sales as yearlings and five as twoyear-olds. Of the 63 offered, 45 were sold (38 Flat-bred, seven NH-bred) and 18 were unsold or sold to vendor. The clearance rate was 71.4% for all of the horses, 78% for the Flat-bred and 50% for the NH-bred animals. There was no significant difference in the average price for subjects aged less than seven days at time of hospital admission (₏31,180) or older (₏31,596). The hospital bill varied from 1.1– 194% of the sales price, with an average bill of 16% of the sales price.

378 controls were collected for the 63 subjects and there was found to be no significant difference in average advertised stallion fee between the test subjects and their controls for either Flat-bred horses or NH-bred horses. Of the 378 controls, 251 were reported sold, giving a clearance rate of 66.4%, which was not very different from the subjects, at 71.4%. Neither were there differences between the average prices of the test subjects and their controls. In addition, the average prices remained similar regardless of whether the test horses and their subjects were presented at sales as foals, yearlings or two-year-olds. For those horses actually sold, each Euro spent on the advertised stallion fee resulted in an increase in price achieved at the sales >> www.tracktotrack.com

27

VETERINARY FeaturE

of €0.89. For Flat-bred sold horses each Euro spent on the advertised stallion fee resulted in a €1.08 increase. The advertised stallion fee for subjects varied from 10% to 1500% of the sales price achieved, with an average of 191%. The advertised stallion fee for control horses varied from 7% to 1536% of the sales price achieved, with an average of 227%. One fact to come out of the study is the effect of a stallion’s advertised nomination fee: “This actually only came out as a sideeffect of proving our statistics were valid,” reports Kevin Corley, “and includes data from both the subjects and their controls, so does not just refer to hospital treated foals.” For each euro invested in the advertised nomination fee (bearing in mind that many people do not pay the full advertised fee), there was only an increase in sales price of 89 cents.

28

www.tracktotrack.com

Paying more for the stallion is not financially worthwhile, unless you pay substantially less than the advertised fee. The better sales price to stallion fee for Flat-bred foals (a mere 19 cent higher) is helped by five 2007 foals by Galileo. He stood for 37,500 in 2006, but these foals made an average of 204,000 when sold. In conclusion, thoroughbred horses treated in Anglesey Lodge Equine Hospital as foals and subsequently presented for public auction, did not sell for lower prices than controls. It is conceivable that other hospitals, with other casemixes and sales, might find different results, but it seems well demonstrated that commercial breeders need have no fear of investing in veterinary treatment for young foals.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

GET ON TRACK Trainer calls for RVL to walk the walk Mornington trainer, Jason Petch, could never be accused of hiding his light under a bushel. Petch is fiercely loyal toward owners and is the first to shoot from the lip when he considers they are being disadvantaged, citing the likelihood that continued ‘neglect’ by racing’s administrators will result in many of our major investors picking up their bat and going elsewhere. Following the abandonment of a race meeting at Benalla on 20 March due to the discovery of a hole in the track’s surface, Petch unleashed in an email to clients the following day – a slightly revised version of which was sent to Track To Track in the form of a Letter to the Editor. >>

www.tracktotrack.com

29

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

R

acing Victoria’s (RVL) track policy is in desperate need of a review, with advice from active industry participants … and not from ‘decision makers’ who rarely attend race meetings. At Benalla on Tuesday (20 March), a race meeting was abandoned after two races … the fourth time in two years. This had resulted from a hole being discovered in the track at the 1200m mark which could have led to fatal circumstances for horses and riders competing at the meeting. Quite rightly, the meeting was abandoned. But at what cost to the owners/ connections of the horses entered on the day? Although I personally did not have a runner at that meeting, I would like to enlighten people as to the costs incurred by owners when they have a horse travel to Benalla and then return without racing: 1.

Transport to and from the race meeting (approximately $364)

2.

Cost of strapper for your horse (approximately $165)

3.

Pre-race supplementing and medications – subject to individual horse (approximately $100)

A total cost of some $629. On top of this, you can add the training fees payable by owners to keep the horse in training until another appropriate race is found. Most likely this would be another week. Consequently, RVL will pay out $600 to horses who were unable to race due to the abandonment of the meeting. The owner loses! The trainer employs staff to work afternoons while attending the race meeting and he or she loses as well.

30

www.tracktotrack.com

Jockeys get paid for lost income from mounts they were unable to fulfill. My question is, why should the owner lose when he/she is the whole reason race meetings are held? RVL still finish in front from betting turnover from Tabcorp of other meetings held on the day. Yet, the listed financial implications are only a part of the problem. Owners may have taken the day off to drive to Benalla: a total waste of your day. I have been quite vocal to the powers that be at RVL to get it right. They are well funded and are the second biggest employer in Victoria. I have always advocated the employment of independent track walkers: their primary roles would be to check the track thoroughly for safety as well as form a correct track rating. After all, there are track walkers working for professional punting syndicates and individuals and they seem to get it right.

You can never promise owners a win – there’s no such thing as a certainty in this game. But you don’t have to throw up unnecessary hurdles either! Currently, RVL rely on the track manager to give a track rating which most of the time is wrong for the simple reason he is only looking after that one track with no comparison to other tracks to gauge a proper track rating. It is a biased opinion which leads to incorrect track ratings and incidents like the one at Benalla.

Following the Benalla meeting, RVL described the hole at the 1200m mark as small. There only has to be a small hole to create a fatality. As to track assessements, I would like to give you an example which impacted upon a horse within my stable six months ago. I travelled a horse to a northern Victorian race meeting thinking she could win, given that the track rating was Dead 5. And as this filly required the sting out of the track, it seemed perfect. On arrival at the races, I walked the track after the first race to find the track was a Good 2 (rock hard) in my opinion, which was backed up by jockeys who rode in the first race. The irrigation line at the 500m mark had broken and flooded that area four days prior to the meeting. Therefore, the track rating was taken (as normal) on the worst part of the track which was there at the 500m mark showing a Dead 5 rating. We were not notified of this prior to the meeting, nor was the track upgraded due to the soft 100m stretch at the 500m mark: consequently, we were unable to scratch and take the horse home. Therefore, by RVL rules, she had to race. She did and she jarred up terribly which affected the rest of her preparation. Not only did it hurt the poor horse, it cost the owners … not RVL! Owners have an association called TROA whose voice doesn’t seem to be strong enough. Trainers have the ATA which, in my opinion, is useless. Unlike the jockeys’ representative, Des O’Keefe, who appears to be front and centre at just about every meeting in the state, the ATA is mostly conspicuous by its absence.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I have put forward many opinions to the ATA, but instead of – at the very least – a conflicting view, suggestions are simply stonewalled and often met with “it won’t happen in our lifetime”. At the end of the day, I’m not Derryn Hinch – like the hole at Benalla, I’m only ‘small’ by industry standards, but if we don’t start looking after our owners in a much more considerate fashion, we’ll lose them. The punting dollar in this industry is holy but you can’t simply walk all over the people who pay for the show: I’ve attended meeting where there isn’t even a TV set up to show a replay to my owners. How embarrassing. The policy about track surfaces must change! We need a fair reading so that if a track has a hole in it, the track walker will find it … if the surface is good when the rating is dead, they will find it. You can never promise owners a win – there’s no such thing as a certainty in this game. But you don’t have to throw up unnecessary hurdles either! I impress upon all owners – actually, everyone in this industry who is concerned about a fair go – to contact RVL and express your concerns. It’s the only way we’ll be heard! Yours sincerely,

Jason Petch Track To Track welcomes responses from Racing Victoria, the Australian Trainers’ Association and/or the Thoroughbred Racehorse Owners’ Association.

How can this association possibly adjudicate on matters pertaining to its members when in reality they are rarely, if ever, seen at the coal face?

AUSTRALIAN EASTER YEARLING SALE PREVIEW

Top, middle AND tail!

SO YOU THINK BLACK CAVIAR

There’s Mosheen. There’s Samaready too. Plus there’s Absolutely, Response and Zavite – all of them Group One winners in the past 12 months and ALL graduates of that holiest of holies, the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. 32

www.tracktotrack.com

T

hat said, Easter does not have a monopoly on success at racing’s most elite level. Black Caviar was sold in Melbourne, along with a lot of other very good horses, while Magic Millions is always keen to get the word out regarding its incredible strike rate in the Golden Slipper. As for New Zealand … well, haven’t we been claiming for years how those bloody Kiwis ‘steal’ all our Cups and Plates?: a good many of them sold at Karaka. But the one thing Easter has above AND beyond every other sale in this part of the world is ‘perception’.

AUSTRALIAN EASTER YEARLING SALE PREVIEW

It’s a marketer’s dream. Theoretically, Easter could have a couple of dry years (never happens!) but would lose no caste in the eyes of punters: every major buyer will be at the Newmarket complex for the sale and EVERY breeder wants to sell their horse at Easter. It’s that simple. Perhaps the best illustration is the lineup of stallions: there is no hotter sire in Australasia at the moment than Fastnet Rock who just posted Group One winner No. 9 as this was being penned. For the Gold Coast Magic Millions, 35 Fastnet Rocks were catalogued … there are 50 heading to Easter. Redoute’s Choice? 13 on the Coast, 43 at Easter. Encosta de Lago has 47 at Easter, while 25 made the Gold Coast book.

Makybe Diva

Even More Than Ready, whose Golden Slipper winners – Phelan Ready and Sebring – have injected yet more gold into the Coast, has 30 at Easter as opposed to 31 up north. And speaking of Sebring … 39 in Easter, 34 on the Coast. We hasten to add this is not a ping at the Magic Millions – far from it. ‘Second’ to Easter is hardly a blot on your copybook.

generally take a back seat to the business of selling: imagery of bidding from under Inglis’ famous fig tree usually evokes that of a focussed gaze, not smiles among the wreckage of champagne and lobster from the ringside tables on the Gold Coast. But enough of comparisons – while our Easter ’12 coverage includes a breakdown of the sale’s highlights, we probably only need to mention three here: a Redoute’s Choice half sister to Black Caviar, a full brother to So You Think and a half brother to Makybe Diva. All up, there are 174 of the 579 lots that are out of stakes winning dams – 39 of those at Group One level – which is up from 146 last year, while there are 139 full or half brothers or sisters to stakes winners … again, up from 130 in 2011. In his annual press release, Inglis CEO, Mark Webster, followed up the declarative “Since 1917, horses purchased at Easter have set the benchmark on the racetrack and in the breeding barn” with a breakdown of statistics and summarised with the familiar, yet potent “buyers will be spoilt for choice at the 2012 Australian Easter Yearling Sale”.

But whereas there is a great holiday atmosphere on the Gold Coast – coupled with the post Christmas buzz – Easter’s aura carries a deal of seriousness.

What was missing from Webster’s address to the troops however, and a fairly constant theme in years past for that matter, is that there is something for everyone at Easter.

That’s not to say it doesn’t rock at the Coogee Bay most nights, but levity does

at paying an average $238,360 for a yearling at Easter and, let’s face it, the million (and the rest) we’d need for the sale topper is only a reality if we pull off a Lotto win in the next little bit. Still, there was no better example as to how all of us can play the ownership game than the Moonee Valley and Rosehill meetings of 23 and 24 March. On the Friday night at the Valley, Fastnet Rock colt, Foxwedge, won the prestigious William Reid. The race was expected to go Hay List’s way but Foxwedge scored a well deserved Group One victory – his first. The flashy bay has now won $942,450 and, frankly, is still in the red for his owners – the Batemans – who had to

tucked under her girth strap. Her value as a broodmare? Pick a number. But one that nearly got lost in the mix is the Listed Skyline Stakes winner Single. Unfortunately for this 4YO by High Chaparral, there is no harem after racing but what a ride he’s provided for his owners! Trained by Craig Carmody, the gelding has won six from 10 (the Skyline was his first black type victory) and some $250,000 in stakes … not bad for a horse that brought just $25,000 at Easter. But that’s the thing about Easter – there’s always something at the top, at the middle and at the tail. That’s why it’s the best!

All up, there are 174 of the 579 lots that are out of stakes winning dams – 39 of those at Group One level – which is up from 146 last year, while there are 139 full or half brothers or sisters to stakes winners … again, up from 130 in 2011. fork out $925,000 to secure the colt from Easter ’10. Not that they are complaining given that the colt appears to have plenty more petrol in the tank and, not to mention a multi million stud contract waiting in the wings. On the Saturday at Rosehill, Samaready – a $150,000 purchase at Easter last year – stamped her rock solid claims for a Golden Slipper victory by eclipsing the Group Two Reisling. She already has a Blue Diamond 34

Hoofnote: The 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale kicks off at 11am on Tuesday 10 April, followed by sessions on the Wednesday and Thursday. And cop a tip: find a spot in the auditorium before 11am on the Wednesday because 10 lots in, Inglis’ will offer up the half sister to Black Caviar and, perhaps, a Golden Slipper winner in All Too Hard.
