he Melbourne Cup carnival again garnered its share of brickbats and bouquets: the suspension of Craig Williams (ultimately denying him the opportunity of becoming the first hoop in history to win the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup in the same year) rankled with some due to its ‘severity’, while the continued dominance of Black Caviar won universal appeal and ensured a record crowd for a day that is often deemed anti-climatic.

HUSSON Arriving in Australia as a World Champion Record Breaker, HUSSON is also a son of the highly successful stallion Hussonet (sire of Australian Horse of the Year, Weekend Hussler). The biggest question was, could Husson live up to the wraps? Well, he's certainly off to a great start with his first runner - Hussousa - capturing the Gimcrack Stakes-LR on debut! stayers, although Aussie breds won in 2009 (Shocking) and 2008 (Viewed) and Makybe Diva (2003-2005) came to Australia as a yearling. Sure, that doesn’t quite make her Australian, but given that her sire, Desert King, has stood in Australia for 11 of the past 13 seasons, she’s got better claims than most. However, that’s not really my point. At the end of the day, we breed the best sprinters … they have the best stayers. What do you think would happen if ‘they’ didn’t want Black Caviar to compete at Royal Ascot? Or if they’d put the hobbles on Scenic Blast, Takeover Target, Miss Andretti, Choisir and the like? Did we complain this much when the Kiwis kicked our derriere every year? Bottom line … some 80% of races conducted in Australia are over short courses and, while the Melbourne Cup is worth $6 million, it’s still only 1.6% of the Australian prizemoney pool. My question is this: if a CEO stood up and enthusiastically announced to shareholders that their product was superior to anything else in the world, but the company was now about to change tack and throw resources at 20% of the market, would he be addressing next year’s annual general meeting?

2012 GOLD COAST MAGIC MILLIONS SALE

I

PARK THIS PAIR SIS PARK, RENOWNED FOR PRODUCING strong-boned, quality individuals off its boutique property at Childers in Queensland, will certainly enhance its reputation at the 2012 Gold Coast Magic Millions.

Isis Park will offer a dynamic duo, namely a strapping colt by leading sire Stratum and another colt by promising stallion, Snippetson. The Snippetson out of Less Speed (by Quest for Fame), which enters the ring as Lot 688

A

is a half brother to no less than four winners (including Brisbane flyer Freebooters) and is closely related to stakes winners Dextrous and Ambidexter and, importantly, Group One winning 2YO, Skilled. Meanwhile, the Stratum enters the ring six lots later (Lot 694) and aside from his sire’s propensity for producing early comers, the colt boasts a family of juvenile black type. Isis Park will be based in Row QB at the Magic Millions complex.

GET IN CINQUE

LOT OF GOOD HORSES HAVE emerged from in and around Braidwood, NSW over the years and purpose-built, Cinque Cavalli, is looking to add to the tally with its small, but elite draft for the 2012 Gold Coast Magic Millions. Cinque Cavalli boasts large, sloping paddocks to promote exercise and solid growth (“no couch potatoes on our farm”, owner Mary Bray points out) and it’s clearly evident with the trio the farm will offer for the opening sale of the season. First cab off the rank is a tall, athletic bay colt by boom Danehill stallion Oratorio (sire of Banchee, Manawanui etc.) from the Mossman mare Jargon (Lot 666). Jargon, who has already produced the multiple 2YO winner, More Than Words, is a daughter of Melbourne Group Two winner and Group One placed Orsay, while the rest of the family is overflowing with black type. Cinque Cavalli will also offer a pair of Choisir fillies – which, in light of Sacred Choice’s 2011 Doncaster Handicap victory – is darn good timing. Lot 839 (“built for speed”) is out of the Catrail mare Cashell, a half sister to European stakes winners Spend a Penny and Life On Light

16

www.tracktotrack.com

CHOISIR

and a close relation to Melbourne G2 winner Barbaricus. Significantly, Cashell has gotten three to the track … all of them winners! Last, but certainly not least is Lot 846, a chestnut filly from Gone West mare Chello Chello, that is described by the farm as “very powerful, with a huge backend and well muscled throughout”. What a family: Chello Chello is a three quarter sister to Belmont Stakes-G1 winner Commendable and she also hails from the family of Champion Sire Fappiano. Cinque Cavalli’s draft is based in Row QB and is again likely to play host to buyers such as Matt Ellerton, Simon Zahra, Kim Waugh, David Jolly and co. who have all purchased from the farm previously.

Caulfield Cup winner an added Perk The Caulfield Cup is our second most cherished handicap and one of Australia’s oldest (first run in 1879). In terms of ‘theatre’, there are few more newsworthy: who can forget Maldivian rearing in the gate and his sensational scratching? Four years on, everyone thought Mark Kavanagh would get his just rewards with December Draw, but horses pay scant regard to fairytales. No, this year’s spoils went to the Southern gal who knew just when to speed.

T

HE 2011 BMW Caulfield Cup – all $2.5 million worth – was a spectacle to say the very least.

Naturally, the real action was up front, but more than the odd punter had cast a baleful eye at the highly favoured December Draw bringing up the rear. You get everyone excited and you just know someone’s going to end up in tears. Not so the connections of Southern Speed though who held their collective breath longer than a Filipino pearl diver, before lustily cheering the (not so) little lady home as Craig Williams charted a safe course. >> www.tracktotrack.com

Peeling off the fence before turning for home, the mare was perfectly poised for an assault on the gallant Green Moon and she moved comfortably clear over the final 100m to score by one and a half lengths.

... SHE’S

VERY SOUND THOUGH AND

HAS NOT HAD A PROBLEM.

Former jockey-cumcommentator, Wayne Harris, had told the stay at homes that he would have liked to find a place for Southern Speed in his top three as they went out on to the track and the mare was hardly a rank outsider, firming into $10 – third favourite – by the time they’d jumped. It’s been a remarkable 2011 for the 4YO mare: after all, Southern Speed only raced for the first time in January 20

www.tracktotrack.com

It’s a big step up from winning a $33,500 race on 8 January to capturing one of the nation’s most prestigious races on 15 October. Fiscally as well … that 20 large she won on debut has now grown to a tick over $2 million which, I’m sure your accountant will tell you, is better than bank interest. Notching up three victories in as many starts, including the The Mittys Vanity-G3 (1400m) at Flemington, Southern Speed then finished midfield in the Australian Guineas-G1 (1600m), was beaten a lip after trouble in the Schweppervesence Stakes-G3 (1800m) and, prior to a five month spell, a solid third in the Schweppes Oaks-G1 (2008m) … a remarkable rise from maiden to Group One placing in the space of two months. Resuming in the Environmental Cockram Stakes-G3 (1200m) at Caulfield in August, Southern Speed finished 13 of 15 and then, as favourite, 11 of 14 in a mares event over 1400m – again at Caulfield. >>

Meanwhile, Halo’s Image didn’t quite attain the same heights on the track, but given Halo himself produced 57 stakes winners and something of a dynasty via Sunday Silence, all is forgiven. Besides, as ANZ editor, Darryl Sherer, points out in this comprehensive assessment of Southern Speed’s pedigree, Halo has plenty of heavenly descendants in this neck of the woods. A rough-tough runner, Halo (by Hail To Reason) won the United Nations Handicap-G1 when trained by Mac Miller and proved even better at stud, heading the North American General Sires list twice (1983, 1989) and siring two Kentucky Derby Winners, Sunny’s Halo and Sunday Silence.

Initially standing at $16,500 – the year Southern Speed was conceived – the final asking price was $9,900 (now permanently based in California, the bay/brown stands at an advertised fee of $2,500). Southern Image was a Group One winner and is, in turn, the best

Halo was noted for an aggressive temperament, something he could pass on to his offspring and was pensioned from stud duty in 1997. He died in 2001 aged 31. Halo has had some successful sons at stud in Australia, most notably Don’t Say Halo, while his champion sire son Southern Halo is the sire of More Than Ready, who has shuttled to Australia with great success, siring the likes of Group >>

career as trainer, Macdonald also made sober mention of Clare Lindop who had been dumped as Southern Speed’s rider after the tumultuous early spring: “That’s probably my saddest moment in the whole thing, that Clare wasn’t on the horse … she spent a lot of time getting this horse ready and it’s just not good.” Perhaps the greatest success story to emerge from the whole affair though are the largely unsung (from a media perspective anyway) efforts of the phenomenally successful breeder and owner Harry Perks. The breeder (via his Toorak Park Stud in South Australia) and part-owner of Southern Speed, Perks has provided much of the wind in Macdonald’s sail for many years (along with those of Mark Kavanagh) and his home breds include Gold Guru (three Group Ones), Devil Moon (Turnbull Stakes), Undoubtedly (Blue Diamond), Serious Speed (Thousand Guineas), Proprietor (The Galaxy), Majestic Music (dual Group Two winner), Shamoline Warrior (dual stakes winner) and Rebel Raider. It’s worth pointing out that Perks’ success hasn’t been derived from simply patronising the leading stallions of the day … indeed the myriad sires utilised can only reflect an astuteness on Harry’s part that defies us mere mortals. With only 12 runs under her belt, Southern Speed appears to have a long and profitable future – we can only hope that the respective trophy cabinets at Chez Macdonald and Perks will withstand the strain.

Harry &

RIVETTE When dreams come true … Call us biased but the thoroughbred industry throws up more interesting ‘life’ stories than any other field of endeavour. Sure, ours is a highway littered with broken dreams, but occasionally the end of the tunnel will bring you bright sunshine. Australian Racing Museum historian KEVIN GATES brings us the tale of a true Aussie battler in Harry Bamber and his wonder mare Rivette.

26

www.tracktotrack.com

BLAST FROM THE PAST

HARRY AND RIVETTE

Harry Bamber was the son of a blacksmith. After service with the Australian Light Horse during World War 1, he and his brother took up a soldier settlement block which they turned into a dairy farm. Their interest in racing persuaded them to buy the pony mare Riverside at auction, and with her they won the Ascot Thousand in 1924. Deciding to give the mare a chance against the thoroughbreds, the Bambers were obliged by the VRC to change her name to Riv.

The mare won a Purse at Sandown, and then returned to the pony tracks. In 1928 Harry Bamber decided to leave the farm and try his hand as a professional trainer. The great depression hit him hard, and for a time he was reduced to milking cows to pay for agistment for Riv. In 1932 he set off for Flemington on Cup Day with a “bank” of 4 pounds. By the end of the day, with the help of a winning bet on Peter Pan, he had turned it into 40 pounds (quite a stash in those days). With this Harry was able to pay the service fee to mate Riv with the imported sire Ronsard. The result was a smallish bay filly named Rivette. As a 3YO Rivette was a failure. As a 4YO she won several races, but after being set for the 1938 Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, she severed a leg artery while enjoying a roll in the sand at Mordialloc beach. The leg

required surgery and a long period of recuperation. For an outlay of five pounds, Bamber had backed the mare to win _15,000 by taking out the Cups double. Bamber always maintained she would have done so but for the injury.

SHE COULD WIN THE MELBOURNE CUP AGAIN IF IT WAS RE-RUN NEXT SATURDAY.

T

HE MYTH OF THE Aussie battler who struggles against the odds and eventually attains success, was epitomised by the life of Harry Bamber. Among the Australian Racing Museum’s most prized possessions are Harry Bamber’s famous black and rose racing colours carried by Rivette during her all-conquering year in 1939.

After patiently nursing Rivette back to health, Bamber returned her to racing in June 1939. During the next four months she started ten times for four wins and six placings. In October she started favourite and decisively won the Caulfield Cup. On the first Tuesday in >> www.tracktotrack.com

1939 Melbourne Cup. Harry said he had far too much affection for the mare to see her burdened down by weight. Think about it … less than 10 years earlier

Harry Bamber recalls proudly that after the Melbourne Cup, the great trainer James Scobie came up to him and said: “I don’t know you, Mr Bamber, but I want to congratulate you on the condition of your horse. She could win the Melbourne Cup again if it was re-run next Saturday”. In the words of Harry Bamber, Rivette “set me up for life”. (Rivette won _14,000 for hero Harry and according to reports, should have won the Moonee Valley Cup that spring too, but missed the start and was still 20 lengths behind approaching the 1000m mark, eventually finishing third). the bloke has to milk cows to get by and now, with a very popular cash cow in his stable, he puts his mare above all other considerations. Harry, old son, they broke the mould.

C

osta Rolfe, in his interesting tome – Winners of the Melbourne Cup: Stories That Stopped a Nation – points out that Harry Bamber sent some distant relatives a telegram on Caulfield Cup eve, suggesting: “Harry likes her chances for tomorrow.” One of the recipients was the eight year old William Deane, pictured right, who not only developed a lifelong love of horse racing following Rivette’s triumph, but would also be appointed to the High Court of Australia and, from 1996 to 2001, become the 22nd Governor General of Australia.

Gary Witheford … all the right ‘breaks’

n

For LISSA OLIVER a visit to John Oxx’s stables to watch Gary Witheford and his team at work was akin to a magic show. The education of the Aga Khan’s prize yearlings is truly a sight to behold … and without a whisper to be heard!

T

O CALL GARY WITH E FOR D a horse whisperer would be incorrect. He may well be fluent in the silent language of the horse, but the world for which he is preparing his young equine students is anything but quiet. The shouts and cheerful banter of his team resound across the once peaceful farm, just like any racing yard or racecourse stable. For the yearlings under his charge this is not just pre-school … it’s finishing school, too.

The old term of ‘breaking in’ really no longer applies, as Gary ‘starts’ these young horses by actually giving them the best possible start in life. It may only take three days, but they leave him fully equipped for their date with destiny, the life for which they were bred.

We are here at the private farm of top Irish trainer John Oxx, deep within the Curragh of Kildare, where 27 elite yearlings have been enjoying a peaceful and sheltered life since transferring from the studs of their birth. These are no ordinary yearlings – they are the blue bloods of His Highness the Aga Khan. Many have never been fully handled, save for routine health checks: they were never destined for the sales ring and have been left alone to mature naturally in the equally secluded surroundings of their home paddocks. Others though have been bought in from the sales, still with hip numbers attached and, if anything, they’re harder work for Gary. He prefers to start with a blank canvas rather than one that has been handled, and possibly mishandled in the process: and one which may have learnt bad habits. >>

www.tracktotrack.com

33

GROUP ONE SPECIAL FEATURE RACING

There is a good reason why Gary and his team have been brought over to Kildare for a week from Gary’s farm in the south of England – few others can do what Gary does. It could be argued that traditional breaking methods are not stressful to yearlings either, as they gradually learn to be handled, backed and ridden over a period of six weeks or so. But it cannot be argued that Gary gets that job done within three days, with his yearlings backed and ridden in 10 minutes or less. If there is any stress involved, and certainly none is visible in the yearlings, then three days of it has got to be more beneficial to the horses than six weeks.

Today we are watching a group of yearling fillies as they complete their education and graduate for a life in the string at Currabeg, the famous yard once home to Sea The Stars and now to his equally well regarded younger brother, Born To Sea, both of whom went through Gary’s unique tuition. This morning the fillies are cantering and going through the starting stalls, as the loud banter is drowned out by the even louder cracks of heavily padded, air-cushioned racing whips. The noise might be deafening, but the whips themselves are harmless, as Gary demonstrates. We conduct our interview, strictly for the purposes of

GARY & TEAM 34

research mind, while Gary repeatedly strikes me with the regulation whip. The deal is, when it hurts, I shout STOP. In actual fact, it’s Gary who tires first, boredom more painful than the padded whips. “It’s a steering wheel,” Gary explains, “it encourages them to go on and they respond to the pressure.” A horse will usually move away from pressure and the whip is an important aid in keeping them straight. In a race, the jockey will be using it to keep straight and safe; today the riders are simply teaching the fillies that there’s nothing to be afraid of. Whips are waved by their heads, struck across their quarters, tapped down their shoulders, all the while producing alarming ‘thwacks’ as padded leather slaps against padded leather. The fillies go about their work without flicking an ear. One, instantly dubbed ‘Miss Bondage’, actually seems to be enjoying it and visibly asking for more. “She’s loving it!” laughs rider Patrick Hills, an apprentice jockey spending time with Gary to improve his skills. Yes, Gary is a teacher, and not only of horses, but it’s the young horses themselves who will teach Patrick the most. ‘Miss Bondage’ illustrates the individual characteristics that will all go into making these either champion, or failed, racehorses.

Beautifully bred, she gives Patrick a nice feel, stamping herself as a racehorse of promise. He should know – his father is top jockey Richard, his grandfather top trainer Barry. Generations of experience course through his blood. The filly seems to know, too. She barges her way through her work mates as though they’re totally unimportant. ‘Miss Bondage’ has right of way at all times. In marked contrast is a beautiful little Invincible Spirit filly, whose rider Katie Edwards also feels has potential. Even at this early stage the strength of their ‘engines’ is apparent. No wonder trainers know when they have a good one, from day one. But unlike ‘Miss Bondage’, this filly has yet to recognise her own merit. She demurely steps aside to let others pass her, a reminder that horseracing can never be an exact science. Pedigree, conformation and talent are not the only ingredients and humans have control of only one of those essential parts. The fillies are cantering together around a schooling ring, three clockwise, three anti-clockwise, learning to meet other horses head on. It might not be something they’ll ever encounter again, but Gary likes to prepare for every eventuality. “A horse could fall in a race or one get loose on the gallops,” he points out, “and if they do meet a horse head on, it won’t worry them.” It definitely isn’t worrying them this morning, particularly not our little friend ‘Miss Bondage’ who deals with head on encounters as >> www.tracktotrack.com

GROUP ONE RACING SPECIAL FEATURE

bullishly as any other type of encounter. Even more bizarre is the sight of Gary’s son Craig standing upright on his filly. And I don’t mean standing upright in the stirrups. It’s a party piece often demonstrated by Zac Baker, too – the former rider actually standing on the saddle, in this case at a walk. And no, it isn’t to train the fillies for yet another possible eventuality, such as a Frankie Dettori flying dismount! This is a very real piece of training, as Gary explains. “We forget that horses are only ever used to dealing with us from up here,” he raises a hand to a horse’s head height. “Quite often, if a horse plays up in the starting stalls, the stalls handlers will climb up onto the frame to try to settle it. That can be very unnerving for the horse, as well as the horses alongside. They’ve never seen anyone standing up above them before.” He grins. “These have.”

YOU CAN TELL A COLT WHAT TO DO, BUT YOU HAVE TO ASK A FILLY. THEY’RE JUST THE SAME AS WOMEN!

36

www.tracktotrack.com

Maybe it’s not just a circus trick, but it still looks remarkable, particularly when you bear in mind these fillies hadn’t even had a saddle on until yesterday morning. As they finish their work they are completing just 20 minutes of riding – ever. Inclusive of a human standing on their back while weaving through work mates! How on earth did they reach this stage of being so perfectly schooled? The process begins in a round pen – an indoor lunge ring in this instance – when Gary meets his pupil for the first time. Wearing only a head collar, never having known more than that, the yearling is asked to canter round the ring. Gary watches and waits, for signs of submission. Very quickly the yearling asks to come in and accept Gary as a friend and, crucially, herd leader. Though it sounds too simple to be true, it’s from that moment on the yearling trusts Gary to do whatever he wishes. Gary demonstrates this by slipping on a bridle and long rein and away the yearling goes again, this time asked to canter round until it can demonstrate an understanding of basic commands. It turns to the left, turns to the right, comes to a stop and takes three steps back. It then accepts

SPECIAL FEATURE

a saddle and is allowed to canter again, to get used to the feel of the saddle and the flapping of the stirrups. To those watching, it seems as though the yearling has been doing this all its life. Then a rider is put up and away they go again. Sometimes there’s a squeal and a buck, mainly through excitement. This is all new, all fun … one big adventure. More often than not the yearling simply behaves like an old pro, a riding school hack with years of experience. And the clock hasn’t gone a quarter way round the hour yet. The quickest Gary has ever started a horse is seven minutes. The longest … 14 minutes. When the horse is happy, settled and obeying basic commands from its rider, it’s started. That’s preschool over. The next stage might be regarded as primary school, going outside to walk, trot and canter. As we are witnessing today, the final assignment is finishing school and graduation. The perfectly educated young fillies leave the schooling ring and spend a few minutes walking through the starting stalls. The most noticeable thing is that they are all confident, happy and enjoying themselves. I said they completed their ‘work’, but for them it was just playtime: fun and stimulating. “It’s all

about keeping their brains working,” Gary explains, “it’s easy to see when they’re physically tired, but what I’m watching out for all the time is mental fatigue. When it stops being fun it’s time to give them a rest.” If any of this, particularly reference to the whip, sounds remotely cruel, remember that even a yearling has a half-ton advantage over a man. No one can force a horse to do something it doesn’t want to, particularly not with cruelty and aggression. “You can tell a colt what to do,” Gary reminds us, “but you have to ask a filly. They’re just the same as women!” It all comes down to trust. The yearlings have put utter trust in their riders and are not afraid to do anything asked of them. Without fear they are confident and happy. Which is why HH Aga Khan brings Gary over every year. Unsaddled and washed down, the fillies return to their boxes. Tomorrow they will join the main string at Currabeg and will fit right in, unfazed by their new surroundings and lifestyle. For Gary, the work continues, with another group of His Highness’ yearlings to ‘start’ for trainer Michael Halford, before moving on to clients in Barbados. No matter where in the world there are racehorses, there will always be a call for Gary. For further information, visit www.garywitheford.co.uk

COLOURS

Stand out from the crowd … Peta Oxenbridge and Grant McLaren take a colourful approach to thoroughbred breeding … and more than just in a literal sense. Their Winning Colours Farm – situated at Rockley in NSW (some 200km west of Sydney) – is a rarity of sorts. Yes, the pair share dreams similar to your garden variety breeder in that they would like to produce champion racehorses, but truth be known, their aim is to produce a multi-coloured Caviar, rather than a plain Black one.

I N N I N G Colours Farm is r e p o r t e d ly the largest

thoroughbred farm in the world devoted to producing horses with the elusive frame overo gene: now, we could go on ad infinitum about what constitutes a frame overo horse … i.e. any solid base color (bay, black, chestnut, etc.) with white irregular patches added, usually with a horizontal orientation … marking are often jagged shaped … white rarely crosses the back … lower legs tend to be dark etc.

add some colour to your life as well. While some may choose to scoff at such preponderance for colour – given that many studies have shown pigmentation has no bearing on speed (although red cars do go faster!) – Peta and Grant are not simply chasing rainbows. They believe that breeding for colour is “in synergy with the ultimate responsibility of breed improvement” and that “temperament and performance must always take precedence over breeding for colour alone”.

BREEDING FOR COLOUR IS IN SYNERGY WITH THE ULTIMATE RESPONSIBILITY OF BREED IMPROVEMENT However, the accompanying pictures are, as they say in the classics, worth a thousand words and it’s now Winning Colours Farm’s life mission to

to me!) and the ‘bay’, Apache Cat look-a-like, Profile in Style. Importantly – or should we imperatively as far as Winning Colours is concerned – both stallions are outstanding, VERY flashy types and both hail from the land of stars and stripes. What’s more, each has much to brag about in terms of heritage: Glacial Gold (standing at a fee of $4,950

with a live foal guarantee) hails from the family of Santa Anita Derby-G1 winner Muttering and offers a dynamic outcross for the largish population of Danehill, Mr Prospector mares. That’s pretty much the case too for Profile in Style, which Winning Colours snapped up in 2007. Bred on the same cross as Dubleo (Group Two winner standing at Vinery) and Urgun (Group One winner), Profile in Style’s granddam is a daughter of Secretariat. The sireline needs very little explanation though as descendants of Halo have proven to be highly successful down under with More Than Ready being just one of his shining examples. Anyway, why just stop with Apache Cat? You too can stand out from the crowd! Visit www.winningcoloursfarm. com.au and at the very least, sign up for Peta’s newsletters – they make for colourful reading. Hooftnote: Admittedly rare, dilute and coloured thoroughbreds have been around since the inception of the breed, with the earliest documented ‘sightings’ dating back to the 15th century. Indeed, historian readily recall the deeds of the famous racehorse and sire The Tetrarch who was known as the “spotted wonder”.

BOOK REVIEW

the MASTER R

ARELY HAS A BOOK been more aptly named. Few would argue that James Bartholomew Cummings reigns supreme as the trainer of a lifetime: thoroughly deserved of the Master designation. And it’s hardly a brave call to state that what Bart has achieved in the past half century will never be surpassed. Certainly you’ll have to dig me up to contradict. Group One victories in every state of Australia, numerous championship titles and those magical 12 Melbourne Cups will ensure that only God can topple him from the perch. Indeed – in terms of training winners of Australia’s greatest race – he’s seven clear of his near rival … a rival that departed this mortal coil over

a decade before the nearly 84 years young Bart first saw the light of day. To add even more perspective, he’s quinellaed the race as many times as anybody else has won it. Since Bart lobbed on the scene as strapper for 1950

Melbourne Cup winner Comic Court, a trickle of news coverage has evolved into a flood, with the printed matter dedicated to this phenomenon’s deeds enough to decimate an Amazon rain forest. Yet Bart is much more than a bloke with a unique ability to put gold on the mantelpiece. His laconic wit has kept us entertained for six decades and the trials and tribulations along the way have only served to endear him to Joe Racing even more. But for all the ink expended – including a biography penned two years ago – you wonder if the true essence of Bart Cummings has ever been truly captured.

BART AND LET'S ELOPE

And for that, they turned to another true Master in Les Carlyon.

authorised biography and the tome falls “into the category of a memoir that is skewed, wherever possible, towards events that I was fortunate enough to witness first hand and people and horses I have come to know slightly. I have favoured the anecdotal over the statistical, on the grounds that the former often tells much about character and the latter can lead to narcosis”.

I’m stereotyping to be sure, but racing folk don’t read a lot of Proust or Dostoevsky and Homer’s Iliad was probably a sketch from the seventh season of the Simpsons. But they will read Carlyon. He is the scribe of a generation – I once aspired to write like him, now I’d settle for a line. His words glide with the cadence of galloping hooves on a cool, crisp morning and as with those of unusual talent, his pearls of wisdom are not confined to the world of thoroughbreds.

Former editor of the Melbourne Age and editor-in-chief of the Herald & Weekly Times Group, Carlyon has won two Walkley Awards and is the author of non-fiction best sellers Gallipoli and The Great War. Carlyon first interviewed Bart Cummings back in 1974 – it was the year of Think Big … Bart’s fourth Cup victory and, 12 months on, his fifth. Carlyon stresses in the author’s note that it’s not an

And this is definitely not a book that any admirer of prowess or prose will use to cure their insomnia. Right from the get go, we’re regaled with an insight to one of Bart’s greatest … “So You Think began his spring odyssey at Caulfield racecourse in August when it wasn’t really spring at all and the winds still carried the sting of winter. The skies frowned and the occasional sunbursts were mere teases. Not a stage for heroes.” And he holds you to the very end: “On the opposite wall is the centerpiece of >>

what sets him apart, makes him a freak and a folk hero and lots of other things that he can’t be bothered to think about.” You may think that you already know everything you need to know about Bart Cummings. Hundreds, perhaps thousands – myself included – have contributed to the tableaux but it will be Les Carlyon who shows you how the Master should be viewed.

achievement of sorts, and the cabinet is close to overflowing. There is, however, no trophy for one of his achievements. It is not a race but a statistic. Since 1965 he has, on average, won the Melbourne Cup one year in four. That, above all else, is

have written much about Melbourne Cups, particularly the three Bart won when he was a young man on the rise and the three he won in the 1990s, when he was beset by financial troubles that would have crushed a lesser spirit. There is good reason for this. Australia has produced a handful of great trainers, of which Cummings is obviously one. What sets him apart, what elevates him to the highest place in the pantheon, is the simple fact that he has won 12 Melbourne Cups, which makes him as freakish as Bradman. The Cup and Cummings – it is impossible to talk about the one without mentioning the other. - Les Carlyon
