ell, we can all stop holding our breath! Despite forecasts that were hardly encouraging, the 2012 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale more than held its own with a 2.8% increase in average from 2011 and, even more importantly for mine, a median which rose 11.1%.

The clearance rate was encouraging also, although that’s always a little hard to interpret. After all, no one goes to the sale with the intention of taking them back home.

According to ANZ Bloodstock News’ excellent Gold Coast summary, the domestic market was up marginally which might augur well for Melbourne and Adelaide, but might put a dent in say New Zealand and Perth which rely so heavily on the international buying bench.

Still, Singapore purchased 11 yearlings from the Gold Coast in 2011 and upped to 17 this year while Malaysia signed off on a handful too. With the Sydney Classic in swing as we go to press, we focus our attention this issue on the 2012 Inglis Melbourne Premier which kicks off on 27 February (turn to page 43 for the start of our 12 page coverage) and to Perth’s 5-day sale from 14 February (see page 18). Also in this edition we profile Coolmore Stud supremo John Magnier and take a close look at the amazing sequence of US wonder horse, Rapid Redux. But regardless of how hard we think the sales might be – for vendor or buyer – spare a thought for Italian racing which, as Lissa Oliver reports, is experiencing some tough times. Here’s hoping that your 2012 is going a whole lot better.

APID REDUX. YOU don’t need Sherlock Holmes to help you work out why owners chose the first word of his name, but the Redux has proven to be something of a portent. Redux is a post-positive adjective meaning ‘brought back or restored’, coming from the Latin, reducere … ‘to bring back’. Well, just as Black Caviar is putting bums on seats in Australia, Rapid Redux is bringing back the lapsed and endearing himself to a new generation of racegoers. It’s certainly been a meteoric rise and left everyone wondering how a mere ‘claimer’ can >> www.tracktotrack.com

lack Caviar’s undefeated 16-run stretch continues to captivate a nation, surpassing the winning streaks of immortals such as Phar Lap, Bernborough and Carbine, but the mighty mare is still six short of country sprinter, Sava Jet, who – according to the Miller’s Guide – won 22 successive races in Queensland between March 1983 and 1985 and Miss Petty, a fellow banana-lander who snapped up 22 on the trot in the Queensland outback between 1986-89.

whose 19 in succession came amidst 36 career victories.

Probably better known is Picnic in the Park who strung together 21, but among those who raced at a more ‘elite’ level, Gloaming reigns supreme with 19 straight wins (overall 57 wins and 9 seconds from 67 starts!). He shares billing with Kiwi Champ, Desert Gold,

She still won’t get within co-ee of the ‘undefeated’ record either given that Hungarian horse, Kincsem, won all 54 of her starts in the 1870s, racing in Germany, France, Austria and England.

Next cab off the rank is Ajax who was going for 19 in a row when sensationally beaten at 40/1 on (in a three horse race) in 1939. Many hope that Black Caviar will edge out Gloaming and Desert Gold and indeed catch Sava Jet, but she has no chance of catching Camarero, who won 56 straight in Puerto Rico in the 1950s and notched 73 from 77 throughout his career.

Rapid Redux certainly didn’t set the world on fire early, winning his maiden at his second start after leading from start to finish. He then notched up some black type with a third (beaten 14.75 lengths) at his next outing, but over the next two years, it was pretty much downhill.

Even on the morning of the race, Wells was ready to pull the pin, but decided to proceed – reluctantly. Rapid Redux led them for home, but a horse called Awesome Rhythm was living up to his name and looked as if he’d go past over the final stages and dampen everyone’s parade … “I walked away,” Wells told reporters. “I thought he was going to come up short.” But Wells, Cole and heaven knows how many fans weren’t to be denied this fairytale and Rapid Redux held on strongly to win with about a length to spare. Now Wells – obviously in consultation with Cole – will have a long, hard look at the future for the gelded Rapid Redux and it appears there might only be a run or two remaining before the curtain comes down on this memorable performer. As for Wells, the son of a trainer, it’s been one helluva journey: “This is a once in a lifetime horse … we are now going to California to get an award (a special Eclipse Award) and sign some posters. We spent $6,250 and he’s made over a quarter of a million.” Great for Wells and Cole and great for racing. Let’s hope they bring this Redux back one more time!

2012 PERTH MAGIC MILLIONS

PARK YOURSELF IN PERTH Cromartry Park is one of West Australia’s banner studs and when you take in its lineup for the 2012 Perth Magic Millions, it’s not hard to work out why. Offering 11 youngsters, it’s a terrific mix of the best of the west and a star from the east. Redoute’s Choice’s sprinter/miler, Redoutable, leads the pack for Cromartry Park with four of the 11 yearlings carrying his X, including a half brother to promising Texan Mitzi from a half to stakes winner Delgara (Lot 492), a colt from a city winning half to Group winner Flaming Heart (Lot 504), a colt from a sister to multiple Group winner Magic Filly (Lot 551) and the second foal of a sister to stakes winner So Canny (Lot 563). Zabeel’s multiple Group One placegetter and up and coming sire, Lords A Leaping also has multiple entries, starting with a half sister to the stakes placed Zeinab (Lot 475) while Lot 529 is a half sister to top city performer Reward from the family of Group One winner Natural Blitz.

Hussonet’s Group winner, Seinne, only has 2YOs to represent him in Australia but is already showing his mettle overseas with a number of winners. His pair for the Cromartry draft are the second foal of a sister to Group winner Cash in the Bank (Lot 479) and a filly from a half to multiple city winner Friartuck from the family of Perth Group One hero Muros (Lot 558). Established stars such as Hurricane Sky and Viscount lead off the consignment with a half brother to city winners Ascoli and Nadal (Lot 254) and a half brother to city winner Single Warrior (Lot 313). Typically, Cromartry Park is determined to finish with a bang and its final offering is a filly by top 10 sire Bel Esprit (sire of Black Caviar) who is out of a half sister to dual Group winner Eureka Jewel (Lot 577). You’ll find Cromartry Park in Row Q at Belmont Park – just look for the queue! For further information, phone Olga McKenzie on 0418 194 998.

LOT 529

WORTH THE VIEW Lakeview’s 2012 Perth Magic Millions offering might only be small numerically, but the stud appears to have a draft for all seasons. On two will line up for Lakeview at the West’s premier auction (commencing 14 February) but it’s a consignment boasting international appeal – certainly much to attract a large buying bench from interstate and abroad, along with WA’s domestic market. First cab off the rank for Lakeview is Lot 179, the smart Canny Lad filly from multiple city winning Grand Lodge mare Sighing. This is the only entry in the 580 lot sale by Canny Lad, a stalwart of Hunter Valley breeding since retiring to stud in the early 90s after an illustrious racetrack career which included a Golden Slipper victory.

CANNY LAD

Snippetson has gotten his career off to a flying start with stakes winners such as Tulloch Stakes-G2 winner Fast Clip and Miss Upstart flying the flag, while Dajeune is a daughter of stakes winner After Beune.

Fittingly, this filly is a close relation to dual Group One winner Dodge (also by Canny Lad) and his Group One winning three quarter brother Tenor.

Although Dajeune is yet to be represented on the track, it’s clearly a family of winners with black type horses such as Muffler, Viminaria, Alcove, Gazania and co. appearing close up.

Meanwhile, Lot 493 looks as if she will be well worth the wait being a daughter of up and comer Snippetson from the Danewin mare Dajeune.

Lakeview is located in Row K at the Belmont Complex and for further information phone John Latham on 0417 905 238.

2012 GOLD COAST MAGIC MILLIONS REVIEW

NO MILLIONS … But steady as she goes

Y

OU DON’T SEE a lot of folk s k i m m i n g through the Financial Review at the sales complex and this scribe doesn’t exactly keep copies laying around for light reading.. However, these was an interesting article in the week leading up to the sale when Magic Millions’ sole owner, Gerry Harvey, was asked about the 2012 prospects for his thoroughbred flagship.

horses will sell for $30,000 to $200,000. Horses that used to go for $2.2 million now go for $500,000.” Harvey proved to be fairly intuitive on those counts – particularly his $30k to $200k predictions, as the accompanying statistics show – but his suggestion that the sale would be “weaker” was (fortuitously) a little off the mark. By about 2.8%! We might be on our own here, but in light of what is happening all around the world, any increase at all in average has to be a good thing. As SmartCompany pointed out, the Gold Coast Magic Millions was down around 6% from 2010 to 2011, whereas in the same period the wealth of the top 20 members of the Australian rich list had dropped by about 11%.

GERRY HARVEY

Harvey was thus quoted: “I don’t think we’ll see anything make the million-dollar mark this year: it’s definitely a buyer’s market with bargains to be had: this year a lot of 20

www.tracktotrack.com

Similarly, the middle market – to which pundits point when they when they wish to make a statement on a relative sale’s buoyancy – was solid with the median jumping 11.1% from $90,000 to $100,000. And, while the figures vary from ’11 to ’12 in terms of the international buying bench, the same faces appeared at the Bundall sales ground

(albeit with liberal doses of sunscreen) as had done previously, so the shifting of a couple of points in the overall spread is no cause for alarm. Indeed, Singapore buyers purchased 11 yearlings last year – this year … 17. Yes, there were the usual cries from vendors who sold for too

little and the buyers who had to pay too much, but truth be known, a lot of people would have flown out of the Gold Coast grateful for not being too ‘scathed’. How will this reflect on the remainder of 2012 sales? Who knows, but at least they can be faced with somewhat less trepidation. >>

TASMANIA'S SUMMER SENSATION

… AND THAT’S JUST THE RACING!

I

f you haven’t visited Tasmania in awhile, there is no better time than during the five-week extravaganza of thoroughbred racing - the AAMI Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival. Hobart’s thoroughbred headquarters – Tattersall’s Park – is set on the banks of the majestic Derwent River and is just a stone’s throw from the exciting and internationally acclaimed Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), just one of the many tourist attractions in the Apple Isle.

which is at Wrest Point Hotel Casino on Friday 3 February. It is always a fabulous night, with quality entertainment, food and beverages. The following Tuesday is the ‘Breakfast with the Stars’ Barrier Draw which will take place at Tattersall’s Park, while on Friday the traditional ‘Cup Carbine Club Lunch’ is also on at Wrest Point. Guest speaker this year is Hall-of-Famer Lee Freedman.

Tattersall’s Park is just a 10 minute drive from Hobart, two hours from Launceston and under three from Devonport where the Spirit of Tasmania delivers tourists daily during summer.

The AAMI Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival, featuring the Hobart Cup, is the highlight of summer activity in the state and is again set to attract quality fields in 2012. The Carnival begins in Hobart with Betfair Hobart Guineas Day on Sunday 22 January 2012, with the day’s main event carrying $90,000 in stakes. The day is themed by Eastlands Shopping Centre as ‘Ladies Day’ with a fashion parade and lots of competitions. The following Sunday is Schweppes Tasmanian Derby Day with highlights including Children’s ‘Fashions on the Field’ and plenty of family focused activities. The feature race, is the $150,000 Bow Mistress Stakes-G3, a weight for age event for fillies and mares over 1200m. There is also the $100,000 Tasmanian Derby, a Listed event over 2200m for 3YOs, plus the $100,000 Listed Motors Elwick 2YO Stakes over 1100m and $50,000 Jockey Club Cup over 2100m. Meanwhile, get ready to frock up for the social pinnacle of the AAMI Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival, the Derby Ball, 26

www.tracktotrack.com

Then it’s the big one, the $225,000 AAMI Hobart Cup-G3 on Sunday 12 February, along with WFA Listed $100,000 Thomas Lyons Stakes over 1400m and the Listed $100,000 Strutt Stakes for 3YO fillies over 2100m. Myer ‘Fashions on the Field’ is an attraction in itself on Hobart Cup Day with the winner becoming the Tasmanian entrant in the VRC Oaks Day event. The Terrace View Restaurant at Tattersall’s Park is well worth exploring as your base for Cup Day. From here, you will enjoy the most exclusive position trackside, great food and wine, all overlooking the winning post. But get in quick – tables are at a premium! Things in Hobart really hot up around this time of the year and there is plenty to see and do. Salamanca Place is home to the internationally renowned market and historic warehouses which are now home to many world class restaurants. And it’s here you can sample some of the best cool climate wines in the country, along with the fresh local produce Tasmania has become famous for. If you would like to dine somewhere further afield, try Peppermint Bay, a fabulous eating experience to the City’s south and easily accessed by fast catamaran. What’s more, there are award winning eco adventure cruises at Bruny Island and also at Eaglehawk Neck, which you pass through when you are on your way to the State’s most visited tourist attraction, Port Arthur.

And, if you back the winner of the 2012 AAMI Hobart Cup, stay a few days longer and visit Saffire on Tasmania’s East Coast for the experience of a lifetime. Seriously, the best punt you can make this summer is to be in Tassie for the 2012 AAMI Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival!

UK REWARD FOR MARCUS OLDHAM AWARD SAM MCMILLAN

TEAH HILL

Hobart boy and thoroughbred fanatic, Sam McMillan (26) was the proud recipient of the Marcus Oldham College/Lanwades International Stud Management Award (UK), entitling him to spend 12 months at the historic Lanwades Stud at Newmarket and also at sister stud, Staffordstown Stud at County Meath, Ireland.

Born into a family that has extensive equine interests both in racing/breeding and sport horses, Teah Hill (19) from Collie in Western Australia received the inaugural Marcus Oldham/Juddmonte Farms Stud Management Award (UK) and consequently will travel to England in 2012 to spend six months at Juddmonte Farms Barnstead Manor Stud, near Newmarket Cambridgeshire.

Throughout 2012, Sam will gain experience in all facets including broodmares, foals, covering barn and yearling preparation, gaining invaluable experience at Goffs and Tattersalls sales: a tremendous insight to the international Thoroughbred industry. Thoroughbred racehorses have been bred in Newmarket and surrounding villages for over 300 years and Lanwades encompasses nearly 1000 acres of prime grassland in both England and Ireland. Students of bloodstock management and veterinary medicine from all over the world have trained at Lanwades and former trainees are now managing some of the top stud farms in Australia, New Zealand, USA, France, Germany, Japan and Poland.

The Juddmonte empire incorporates six properties in the United Kingdom and Ireland along with three farms in the USA. One of the leading breeders in the world, Barnstead Manor Stud comprises 373 acres and is home to a host of exciting stallions. The Stud operates on the successful ‘walk-in’ system for visiting mares. Teah is also skilled as an equestrian eventer, yet can direct her skills and horse management knowledge equally to the thoroughbred industry. Understandably, Teah appreciates this excellent opportunity to further her knowledge of an international scale.

MAGNIER Lord of Ireland’s Manor LISSA OLIVER chronicles the rise and rise of Coolmore Stud chief, John Magnier.

C

OOLMORE Stud is renowned the world over, in no small part due to a publicity department working around the clock to promote the latest wave of champions. The quality of the Ballydoyle racehorses and Coolmore stallions ensures the ‘brand’ is always at the fore … all of which is in stark contrast to the publicity-shy business supremo who has made the great stud what it is today. John Magnier, born in 1948, but with a young man’s focus and pace, prefers to let his horses do the talking and their success has certainly earned him the right to 28

remain quietly in their shadow. That’s not to say that, when cornered by the press on the racecourse, he isn’t unfailingly courteous and forthcoming. His family, too, are always great ambassadors for the sport and it is it abundantly clear that while Coolmore might well be a successful business it remains, first and foremost, a passion. The Magnier family has raised horses since the mid-1800s and John’s partnership with Robert Sangster and Vincent O’Brien seemed a match made in heaven. The Magniers and O’Briens had been linked for several generations and Vincent’s first winner had >>

SPECIAL FEATURE been leased from Michael Magnier, John’s grandfather. John’s mother, Evie, had been Matron of Honour at the wedding of Vincent and Jacqueline, and John has enjoyed a long and happy marriage to Vincent’s daughter Sue. Horses, of course, played their part in uniting these legendary figures. John managed his late-father’s Grange Stud from an early age and later bought the nearby Castlehyde Stud. Grange Stud had been as famous in its heyday as Coolmore is today, standing the great National Hunt stallion Cottage: said to be sire of almost every steeplechaser offered in Ireland during the 1950s. When John bought Castlehyde Stud in 1973 he was standing three stallions … two years later he was standing 13, including Green God, Deep Diver, Deep Run and Sun Prince. Coolmore Stud might seem a more modern success story, but its history goes back much further, to its original days as a small agricultural farm inherited by Tim Vigors in 1945. Vigors used it as a base for his bloodstock

agency and as he grew more successful, went into partnership with Vincent O’Brien, eventually selling two-thirds of the business to the training legend. With Vigors’ departure from Ireland in 1973, Vincent sought a manager for Coolmore and John seemed the obvious choice: “He had an exceptional ability and

was the most capable young man in Europe,” Vincent once said of the decision. A condition of the job was that John must live at Coolmore. He was reluctant to leave his beloved Grange Stud, but finally agreed, with the three studs of Coolmore, Grange and Castlehyde amalgamated into a threeway partnership. >>

The building blocks of the mighty Coolmore empire were already in place, but one more crucial element was yet to be added. Vernons Pools heir, Robert Sangster, a close friend of John, wanted to break into horseracing on a large scale and had been discussing with John the difficulties in buying suitable stallions for stud.

was the recognised face of Coolmore and Ballydoyle (and is very much sadly missed after being claimed by cancer in 2004).

Top class racehorses commanded high prices on retirement, but the obvious solution was to buy potential stallions as yearlings and aim to win top class races, the Classics in particular. The ingredients required? An expert judge of yearlings was essential … Vincent O’Brien. And someone willing to make a huge financial investment beyond the means of most … Robert Sangster. The uniting of the three enabled them to break into the expensive American market, sales at which few Europeans could afford to buy stock. The out-going Sangster proved the ideal spokesman for his two publicity-shy partners and though he often owned no more than 40% of the horses running in his colours, he

TRIBUTE TO LATE, GREAT SADLER'S WELLS

Vincent, too, was no stranger to the breeding side of the racing industry. He founded Ballydoyle Stud in 1952 and bred Irish Derby winner Chamier, and would later breed (at his Lyonstown Stud), such luminaries as Sadler’s Wells, El Gran Senor, King’s Lake and Dr Devious, to name but a few. This very modern concept of a syndicate now enabled the trio to buy yearlings to make into stallions, a venture previously unheard of. Furthermore, European racehorses had long been systematically sold to America … a downward spiral that John and his partners could now reverse. The best European bloodlines, as well as the top American lines, would now be based in Europe – and more importantly in Ireland.

COOLMORE STUD MIGHT SEEM A MORE MODERN SUCCESS STORY, BUT ITS HISTORY GOES BACK MUCH FURTHER

Today, it is John who is recognised as having established Coolmore, and its sister studs in America and Australia, helming the greatest breeding empire in the world. He is a billionaire, his business acumen cast wider than horseracing: perhaps most famously in his shares (now sold) of Manchester United, while he has also been a Senator in the upper house of the Irish Parliament, Seanad Éireann. All this from a young man forced to leave school at 15 due to the death of his father! Indeed, John’s education on the family farm ultimately proved far more valuable than anything attainable at university and his children are equally skilled in the practical side of the industry, assuring Coolmore’s future. Of his five children, sons Tom, John Paul (JP) and Michael Vincent (MV) are already making their mark in the racing world, as are daughters Sam and Katie. Katie is married to successful trainer David Wachman, himself a name for the

future. In recent years John has been joined in business ventures by associates J. P. McManus, Dermot Desmond, Joe Lewis, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, the latter two enjoying considerable success with shares in Ballydoyle horses running in their colours. High Chaparral and Starspangledbanner carried Tabor’s familiar blue jacket with orange disc to glory, while Smith’s purple silks have been carried in Europe by So You Think. The dark blue silks of Sue Magnier are perhaps best known for Yeats, but whatever the choice of silks, it can be guaranteed that one of the three will feature in several major Group One finishes each season. Fairytales are all too few in the thoroughbred industry, but for the 15 year old who reached for the moon, John Magnier is now the brightest star in the constellation.

MAMA MIA! Italian Racing In Crisis Italy suffered many tales of woe in 2011, not the least being the departure of its Svengalilike Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi and an economy in disarray. As LISSA OLIVER reports, a major fallout is Italian racing and breeding.

C

HRISTMAS IS A time when many people traditionally receive gifts, but instead the Italian racing community found itself giving up what amounts to be the lifeblood of the industry. 34

www.tracktotrack.com

December 24 seemed an inappropriate day for ASSI, the Italian industry’s ruling body, to confirm the decreased 2012 Racing Calendar, making matters worse with the announcement of prizemoney reductions: far exceeding even the darkest of predictions.

SPECIAL FEATURE

Prize money has been dramatically cut by 40% from 185million (A$227million) to 111m (A$137m), for both thoroughbred and trotting races combined, as a result of the decrease in betting revenue, which fell by 20% last year. Prior to the arrival of slot machines and poker in 2006, the betting turnover had been as high as €2.5billion (A$3billion). Added to this financial disaster is the reduction of race meetings, from 609 down to just 540. Pattern and Listed races, which have raised the profile of Italian bloodstock significantly in recent years, will be badly hit, as will the bread-and-butter races that enable owners to keep a horse in training. The winning prize for a maiden race at the two major tracks San Siro (Milan) and Capannelle (Rome) have dropped to €4,250 (A$5,200)

from €8,500, while Group and Listed races have been decimated with the total prize money for 29 Italian Group races falling from €5,544,000 to €3,826,000 (A$4,710,452), a drop of 31%. The one silver lining within the dark cloud is the retention of the bonus prizemoney for Italianbred horses, but it too has inevitably suffered a substantial reduction.

RACING WAS THE ONE AND ONLY LEGAL WAY TO BET 20 YEARS AGO, BUT NOW THE BETTING TURNOVER ON HORSE RACING IS JUST TWO PER CENT OF THE MARKET.

Indeed, Ebenezer Scrooge began to look more like Good Saint Nick in comparison to ASSI, themselves under considerable pressure from a recession-hit Government.

As a direct result, some racecourses immediately threatened not to open and Guido Melzi, the President of Federippodromi (the association of the major racecourses), announced: “We cannot agree with the approach of the ASSI. Our industry needs a different plan. We have more than 40 racecourses, which is too many. We need to rebuild the system.” The associations of owners, breeders and trainers were equally >>

35

SPECIAL FEATURE incensed by the decision and planned a demonstration for 12 January at the Ministry of Agriculture. However, long before then Italian racing found itself crippled by a series of strikes, by all areas of the racing industry, preventing the opening of the 2012 season which was due to commence on 1 January.

headquarters in Rome, where they planned to remain until 12 January. On 3 January around 200 demonstrators broke into the offices of UnireTV and removed equipment and cabling to prevent the broadcasting of foreign racing. It was reported that one of the racing station’s presenters was assaulted amid the protest. Meanwhile, Italy’s most famous racing export, Frankie Dettori, played an important role of solidarity when representing Italy in an international jockeys’ challenge in Hong Kong in December, by wearing the Italian football shirt bearing the slogan ‘Save Italian Racing’. Frankie told the media: “Italian racing is in serious trouble and I want to help my country to ride out the crisis. All the Italian racing people will have to work together as hard as they can.”

SAVE ITALIAN RACING CAMPAIGNERS

Francesco Ruffo, SecretaryGeneral of ASSI, pointed out that: “By not signing contracts agreeing to the cuts, racecourses cannot obtain a public safety licence to stage race meetings.” All racecourses on mainland Italy were closed, prompting strike action by judges, starters and racing officials, while representatives of breeders, trainers and owners staged a sit-in at the governing body’s 36

www.tracktotrack.com

Mario Catania, Italy’s Minister of Agriculture and a well-known racing fan and former Steward, called a press conference on 5 January, but his personal links with the industry proved to be of little help: it became abundantly clear the Government could not subsidise racing in the current economic climate. Catania declared: “The Italian Racing Industry cannot ask for more money in this very tough environment. We need to rebuild the industry and resize its place in the betting market. Racing was the one and only legal way to bet 20 years ago, but now the betting turnover on horse

SPECIAL FEATURE associations. The difficulties of a successful resolution are increased by the lack of a unified racing body and the differing needs of the trotting and horseracing bodies. The horseracing industry is largely sympathetic to Catania and willing to establish compromises, while the trotting industry is determined to press for Government subsidy.

ITALIAN PROTESTORS

racing is just two per cent of the market. “We are in discussion with the Minister of Finance and the first step could be an increase to the payout by bookmakers, because the take out is very high. Racing needs an industrial plan with some reforms. One such is a new management of betting. We can consider a scheme similar to the French PMU (pari-mutuel betting).” He echoed the words of Frankie Dettori by concluding: “The way out of the crisis is not just around the corner; we have to work together.”

This is by no means the first time such desperate measures have been taken: Italian racing resorting to strike action in May of last year on the eve of the Derby Italiano. Earlier strikes had already taken place in 2011, causing the loss of two meetings, although the feature races were run at a later date. Even though there had been three hearings in Parliament about the financial state of the racing industry, UNIRE (Italian racing’s independent governing body) was unable to make any progress and fix a budget, leaving courses unable to guarantee

AUSTRALIA ONLY HAS TO REMEMBER THE EQUINE INFLUENZA OUTBREAK TO RECALL THE AFFECTS ON ALMOST UNCONSIDERED SATELLITE BUSINESSES.

Even though Catania pointed out the futility of the strike and asked the industry to return to work, his pleas fell on deaf ears. A meeting later took place on 9 January between AAMS (the Government agency supervising betting) and the various professional

Strikes had also taken place in 2008 and much of the present day troubles had been predicted by the then Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Roberto Borroni, as far back as >> www.tracktotrack.com

SPECIAL FEATURE 1999. Emergency measures were taken in 2008 to retain prizemoney levels at €220million (A$270million), aided by the sale of 3,000 betting shops and reforms to betting tax, but the budget could not be sustained. At a time when Italy, like much of Europe, is crippled by recession, the livelihood of over 50,000 families directly involved in the industry is again at risk. That figure is but a drop in the ocean compared to those indirectly reliant on racing and breeding: from

Bearing in mind this wasn’t just a fight to secure Government handouts for an elitist sport, but a genuine need to secure funding and safeguard employment, more than 4,000 people from all branches of the racing industry converged on Rome on 12 January to protest against the 40% cut in prizemoney in front of Parliament. Under the banner “Save Italian Racing”, trainers, owners, jockeys and stablelads came from far and wide to ask Government to intervene and address the drop in prizemoney. Matters came to a head when an explosive device went off, but it was a minor incident, the device designed to damage barriers preventing access: and no injuries were caused.

feed merchants to farriers, pharmaceutical suppliers and specialist clothing manufacturers, to specialist laundry services and transport operators. Australia has only to remember the EI outbreak to recall the affects on almost unconsidered satellite businesses, such as hat shops for racegoers. The knock-on affect of supposed cutbacks directed at the racing industry have dramatic repercussions elsewhere, decreasing Government revenue and increasing social benefit payments. 38

www.tracktotrack.com

Frankie Dettori commented before the protests: “Italy is in crisis – there is a great tradition of racing there, a great history, and it would be a tragedy if that was to be lost. I do understand there are many other pressing issues for the Government, but if they don’t do something we could be looking at 50,000 people out of work. I feel for my family, I feel for my friends – I feel for the industry as a whole.” A press conference was held before the demonstration and many Members of Parliament assured their support to the racing industry. Mario Catania promised: “We will spend the next week looking at how we can best help the racing industry and the jobs that it provides.”

ERCEPTION IS A funny thing. Everyone expects that our best racehorses will emerge from the Gold Coast, or Easter, or the select session in New Zealand. And let’s face it, given that so many good horses graduate from Australasia’s elite three, you wouldn’t win too many arguments by trampling all over their respective bona fides. But bagging a given sale is not the point, it’s more the

expectations that three generate.

the

big

When a Group One winner hails from the those sales, the stock answer is “so they should … after all, they have carte blanche when it comes to well related youngsters and – arguably – access to the finest athletes”. Fortunately, we have the Inglis Melbourne Premier to remind us that this sport/business of ours is a long way short of being an exact science and deep pockets are not the only path to racetrack glory. >> www.tracktotrack.com

2012 MELBOURNE PREMIER PREVIEW

Melbourne offers everything: a good cross section of the immaculately pedigreed and the truly athletic. Often the pedigree/athlete twain doesn’t meet, but as we’ve all found out many, many times, one man’s trash (an alleged conformational infraction) is another man’s treasure (Group One winner). In terms of the pedigree page, Inglis’ Melbourne machine can proudly boast of its assemblage for 2012 … For starters, there are 11 siblings to Group One winners including full relations to Hong Kong legend Sacred Kingdom and dual Classic winner Rebel Raider, along with half brothers to 4-time Group One winner Divine Madonna and Champion 2YO Fashions Afield. Meanwhile, there are 13 yearlings from Group One winners such as Macedon Lady, Special Mission, Asylum Seeker, Mannerism, Danglissa and Dowry.

44

(For a comprehensive breakdown on the stakes winning relations in Premier ’12, turn to page 35). Similarly, sons and daughters of our stallion elite are showing up in droves with Bel Esprit represented by 39 youngsters, while his Eliza Park stablemates Magnus (35 yearlings) and Statue of Liberty (24) both weigh in with hefty consignments. Also playing a sizeable role are Australia’s Champion Sire, Lonhro (30 yearlings), Fastnet Rock – who is poised to displace Lonhro this season – has 28, while Victorian expats, Testa Rossa (20) and Encosta de Lago (17) are also high on the list. Among the first time sellers, Sebring (27 yearlings) leads the way and based on his sales at the Gold Coast, should be again well patronised in Melbourne. Similarly, the Northern Meteors (21), Astronomer Royals (17), Duke of Marmalades (10) and

Myboycharlies (10) should also sell well. (All up there are 108 individual sires with yearlings in the Melbourne Premier and turn to page 41 for a full list). But for all the song and dance over Melbourne’s ability to draw a well credentialed crowd, the reason for its 5 star rating is simple: the Premier Sale – year after year – keeps producing outstanding racehorses. World Champion Black Caviar … 2011 Cox Plate winner Pinker Pinker … sprinting hero Starspangledbanner … South African champ Igugu … Horse of the Year Weekend Hussler … Hong Kong Horse of the Year Sacred Kingdom … Blue Diamond winner Reward For Effort … Group One winners Ortensia, Littorio, Turffontein, Arapaho Miss, Le Drakkar, Rostova, Sakima, Golden Gunner, Sanjuan, Ultra Fantasy … >>

of proven sires, emerging superstars and exciting wellcredentialed new stallions in the 2012 Melbourne catalogue, with sprinters, milers, middle-distance and staying types all available.” Inglis Managing Director, Mark Webster, is also buoyed by the support that Premier ’12 has received from breeders: “We’re very pleased to welcome over a dozen new vendors to Melbourne next year, bringing with them 74 yearlings from Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania and New Zealand “There is a great diversity of stallions represented in this Premier catalogue, our best yet, with yearlings to suit all buyers whom we look forward to greeting at the sale during the Melbourne Festival of Racing. “Horse racing in Victoria has never been stronger and with the added incentive of the $2.6million Inglis Race Series, Super VOBIS and

Super VOBIS Gold there is no better time to get involved in this amazing sport.” The 2012 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling sale will be held over four days at Oaklands Junction, commencing, Monday 27 February. Sunday 26 February is an Open Inspection Day and follows Super Saturday at Caulfield, where three Group One events including the Blue Diamond, Futurity Stakes and Oakleigh Plate will be held. Premier Session 1 will be staged on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with 614 yearlings on offer, while Premier Session 2, comprising 176 lots, rounds out the sale on Thursday 1 March.
