ABEER ALAKEL'S LINKEDIN PROFILE
TRANSFORMING SAUDI’S DESIGN LANDSCAPE, A VISION OF MODERNITY ROOTED IN HERITAGE
BY TIM MARTIN, CO-MANAGING DIRECTOR & PRINCIPAL AT GENSLER MIDDLE EAST.

s The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia embarks on one of the most ambitious transformations in its history, its built environment has become a defining element of its future. Guided by Vision 2030, the Kingdom is not only reshaping its physical landscape but also spearheading a profound evolution in its national identity – one that celebrates its cultural heritage while embracing innovation and modernity.
This transformation is reshaping cities, communities, and the very fabric of Saudi society, aiming to balance economic growth with a sustainable, inclusive future. As an architecture and design firm deeply committed to the Middle East, Gensler believes Saudi Arabia is setting the standard for integrating global design trends with local context. The Kingdom’s transformation is not only redefining its urban landscape but also creating a dynamic model for cities of the future –urban environments that foster connectivity, sustainability, and social interaction.
THE RISE OF MIXED-USE LIFESTYLE DISTRICTS
At the heart of Saudi Arabia’s transformation lies the emergence of mixed-use lifestyle districts, which have become the cornerstones of modern urban planning. These developments are designed to integrate
residential, commercial, cultural, and recreational spaces, creating vibrant, walkable neighborhoods that promote community interaction. By combining hospitality, retail, sports, and residential functions, they embody a global trend toward creating cities that are not just places to live but destinations that offer a rich, multifaceted experience.
Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter (DQ) serves as a shining example of this transformation. Originally a diplomat-focused area, it is now evolving into a vibrant, pedestrian-centric district that integrates upscale residential spaces with cultural and recreational opportunities. This development mirrors global urban innovations like Msheireb Downtown Doha and Ras Al Khaimah Central in the UAE – projects where Gensler’s influence is evident in shaping future-ready cities. These developments embrace the concept of the “20-minute city,” where residents can access essential services, workplaces, and amenities within a short walk or bike ride, fostering a higher quality of life and reducing dependence on cars.
Such transformations go beyond aesthetics – they are powerful economic drivers. By encouraging social interaction and attracting global businesses, these districts play a pivotal role in positioning Saudi Arabia as a
dynamic global hub. As Saudi Arabia continues to diversify its economy and build its global stature, these lifestyle districts will be at the forefront of shaping its urban identity.
SUSTAINABILITY AS A CORNERSTONE OF DESIGN
The urgency of climate change and Saudi Arabia’s ambitious sustainability goals under Vision 2030 are accelerating the development of innovative, eco-friendly solutions in design and construction. The Kingdom has committed to renewable energy, low-carbon strategies, and resilient urban planning to mitigate environmental impact and secure long-term sustainability.
At Gensler, we have developed tools such as the Gensler Product Sustainability (GPS) Standards™, which help us select low- or nocarbon materials for interiors and furnishings, significantly reducing environmental impact. Furthermore, advancements in construction technologies – such as zero-carbon cement, and sustainable building systems – are aligned with Saudi Arabia’s goals of creating energy-efficient, resilient buildings.
The commitment to sustainability also extends to adaptive reuse, where existing structures are repurposed to reduce waste and conserve resources. In a rapidly evolving
urban landscape, adaptive reuse strategies can transform aging buildings into vital assets, ensuring that Saudi Arabia’s future cities remain sustainable, resilient, and capable of adapting to shifting environmental and social challenges. Such innovations are vital for addressing climate-related risks, including the extreme heat and storms that have become more common in the region.
UNLOCKING POTENTIAL THROUGH ADAPTIVE REUSE
Adaptive reuse is increasingly recognized as a powerful tool for revitalizing underutilized properties and transforming them into valuable assets. In Saudi Arabia, where rapid urbanization has resulted in an influx of new buildings, this practice is gaining traction. Aging office buildings and outdated infrastructure are being repurposed into vibrant mixed-use spaces, healthcare facilities, or residential developments.
Gensler’s Conversions+™ platform plays a key role in identifying and unlocking the potential of these buildings. For instance, Riyadh’s financial district, once home to under-used and aging properties, is now poised for transformation into vibrant, multifunctional spaces that meet the demands of modern urban living. These projects not only enhance sustainability by reducing the need for new construction but also contribute to the efficient use of resources and help cities preserve their architectural heritage.
HOUSING FOR A GROWING POPULATION
Saudi Arabia’s rapidly growing population is placing increased pressure on the housing sector. The Kingdom faces the challenge of meeting rising demand while ensuring that housing remains affordable, especially for young professionals, families, and the increasing influx of foreign talent. Saudi Arabia’s focus on branded residential developments reflects a balanced approach to these demands, blending affordability with luxury to attract international investors and meet local needs.
Designing housing that appeals to both
local and global residents is a key element of the Kingdom’s strategy to become a prime destination for investment. These developments are designed not only for luxury but also to provide functionality and cultural relevance, ensuring that they resonate with the evolving needs of the population.
THE EVOLVING WORKPLACE
The workplace of the future is already taking shape in Saudi Arabia. In line with global trends, businesses are demanding modern office spaces that prioritize employee well-being, creativity, and collaboration. The focus has shifted from merely providing a physical space to creating environments that foster innovation, productivity, and employee engagement.
In Saudi Arabia, the demand for Class A office spaces is growing rapidly, particularly in mixed-use districts where workplaces, residential areas, and amenities are seamlessly integrated. These environments are not only more attractive to businesses but also reflect the Kingdom’s ambition to become a global business hub. By prioritizing workspaces that enhance employee experience and ensure high levels of collaboration, Saudi Arabia is positioning itself at the forefront of modern business practices.
HERITAGE MEETS MODERNITY
What sets Saudi Arabia’s design transformation apart is its ability to embrace cuttingedge modernity while remaining deeply rooted in its rich cultural heritage. From the intricate patterns and traditions of ancient architecture to the natural beauty of the Arabian landscapes, Saudi Arabia’s design philosophy is deeply connected to its past. However, rather than replicating the past, this transformation seeks to blend traditional elements with contemporary aesthetics, creating spaces that are both forward-thinking and culturally resonant.
At Gensler, we understand the importance of designing spaces that reflect the values and history of the Kingdom. Our approach is to honor this heritage while incorporating
modern design principles that push the boundaries of what’s possible, ensuring that each space we create tells a unique story and contributes to a sustainable, inclusive future.
A BLUEPRINT FOR THE FUTURE
Saudi Arabia’s bold vision for its built environment is shaping the future of urban design not only within the Kingdom but also globally. By focusing on sustainability, adaptive reuse, and community-centric development, Saudi Arabia is setting a new standard for urban planning in the Middle East and beyond.
Gensler is proud to be part of this transformative journey, contributing our expertise, tools, and research to help shape a future where modernity and heritage coexist harmoniously. Through our work, we aim to help create spaces that are not only functional and beautiful but also inspire future generations to live, work, and thrive in environments that respect the past while embracing the possibilities of tomorrow.
This transformation is more than a vision for Saudi Arabia – it is a blueprint for the world, setting a new precedent for how cities can evolve to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

SAUDI ARABIA’S GREEN ENERGY REVOLUTION
HOW GREEN ENERGY ADOPTION IS SHAPING THE FUTURE OF CONSTRUCTION AND SUSTAINABILITY IN THE KINGDOM.

Saudi Arabia is rapidly positioning itself as a global leader in renewable energy and sustainability. Driven by Vision 2030, the Kingdom is investing heavily in alternative energy sources to diversify its economy and reduce its dependency on oil. The transformation isn't just about energy production; it's shaping the very foundation of how buildings and infrastructure are designed, built, and operated across the country.
As of 2023, Saudi Arabia is targeting an ambitious 50% of its energy mix to come from renewable sources by 2030. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the nation’s installed capacity for solar and wind power has increased by over 300% since 2018. Large-scale projects, such as the King Salman Energy Park (SPARK) and NEOM, have become showcases for integrating renewable technologies across sectors.
SAUDI ARABIA IS EMBRACING SEVERAL KEY TYPES OF RENEWABLE ENERGY SOLAR ENERGY
With abundant sunlight throughout the year, Saudi Arabia is one of the world's most promising markets for solar power. The Kingdom's Sakaka Solar Power Plant, producing 300 megawatts, is the first large-scale renewable energy project under Vision 2030. NEOM's "The Line" city is expected to be powered entirely by solar and other renewables.
WIND POWER
Saudi Arabia’s first utility-scale wind farm, the Dumat Al-Jandal project in Al-Jouf, generates 400 megawatts, providing energy for over 70,000 homes. With the Kingdom's diverse topography, wind power is becoming a crucial component of the renewable strategy.
GREEN HYDROGEN
Saudi Arabia is leading global efforts to develop and export green hydrogen. NEOM's $5 billion hydrogen plant, in collaboration with Air Products and ACWA Power, is projected to produce 650 tons of green hydrogen daily by 2026. The hydrogen will fuel sustainable transport solutions, both locally and internationally.
2030 target 50% of Saudi energy mix to come from renewables

40% energy savings carbon emissions reductions +30%
ENERGY STORAGE AND SMART GRIDS
To ensure energy reliability, Saudi Arabia is investing in advanced storage solutions and smart grids that enable efficient management of fluctuating renewable energy supplies. These innovations help reduce carbon emissions while optimizing energy distribution across the Kingdom.
GREEN ENERGY IN CONSTRUCTION, A NEW ERA
The construction industry is playing a vital role in Saudi Arabia’s energy transformation. Buildings and infrastructure are increasingly incorporating green technologies to improve energy efficiency and sustainability. This approach aligns with global green building certification systems such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and the Kingdom's own Mostadam certification program.

Solar and wind power + 300% since 2018
A Saudi Government source quoted "Green energy adoption is no longer an option-it’s an imperative for sustainable development. Our construction projects are setting global benchmarks by integrating renewable technologies from the ground up."
Here are some of the ways green energy is being integrated into Saudi construction projects:

Many modern buildings in Saudi Arabia are equipped with photovoltaic (PV) panels to generate clean electricity. Projects like the Red Sea Global’s eco-resorts utilize passive design techniques that maximize natural light and ventilation, reducing the need for artificial cooling and lighting.
ENERGY-EFFICIENT HVAC SYSTEMS
High-performance HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems powered by renewable energy are now standard in high-profile developments. These systems lower energy consumption and improve air quality, crucial for both comfort and health.
INSULATION AND SMART MATERIALS
New buildings use advanced insulation materials and thermal barriers designed to
withstand Saudi Arabia’s extreme climate. These materials reduce the heat load, minimizing energy consumption for cooling.
WATER MANAGEMENT AND REUSE
Water is another critical factor in sustainable construction. Green buildings are designed with rainwater harvesting, wastewater recycling, and water-efficient fixtures to reduce their environmental impact.
GREEN HYDROGEN APPLICATIONS
Some large infrastructure projects, including those within NEOM, plan to use green hydrogen for backup power systems and industrial processes. This innovation places Saudi Arabia at the forefront of green hydrogen applications in construction.
THE BUSINESS CASE FOR GREEN ENERGY IN CONSTRUCTION
Saudi Arabia’s construction sector is quickly realizing the economic and environmental benefits of adopting green energy solutions. Industry experts report that green buildings have lower operating costs, longer lifespans, and higher property values than traditional structures.
Sustainability
transforms design in Saudi construction projects

Green hydrogen leads Saudi Arabia's energy innovation
A report from the Saudi Green Initiative highlights that buildings designed with renewable energy systems can achieve energy savings of up to 40% and reduce carbon emissions by more than 30%.
Moreover, the Kingdom’s construction companies are collaborating with international partners to enhance their sustainability efforts. For example, Samsung C&T has partnered with NEOM to incorporate advanced renewable technologies into urban developments, reinforcing the Kingdom's commitment to world-class sustainable infrastructure.
CHALLENGES AND FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES
Despite the significant progress, there are challenges to overcome. High initial investment costs for renewable technologies and the need for specialized skills are two key hurdles. However, Saudi Arabia is addressing these issues by offering financial incentives, fostering public-private partnerships, and investing in workforce development programs.
The Kingdom’s National Renewable Energy Program (NREP) continues to launch new initiatives aimed at scaling up renewable adoption. These efforts are expected to attract billions of dollars in foreign investment, further accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Looking forward, experts see tremendous potential for further innovation. The continued integration of AI, Internet of Things (IoT), and digital twins into construction projects will optimize energy efficiency and project management.
A NEW CHAPTER IN SAUDI ARABIA’S DEVELOPMENT
Green energy is transforming not only Saudi Arabia’s energy landscape but also the way buildings and infrastructure are designed, constructed, and operated. By leveraging its abundant natural resources, advanced technology, and bold vision, the Kingdom is setting a global example for sustainable development.
As the nation moves closer to its Vision 2030 goals, the future of green energy in Saudi Arabia looks brighter than ever. Industry leaders, businesses, and stakeholders are invited to join this historic transformation by adopting and investing in renewable technologies.

THE ARCHITECTURAL ENDEAVORS OF PRABHU SUGUMAR.

n the world of architecture, few names resonate as deeply with the ethos of cultural transformation as that of Prabhu Sugumar. With nearly two decades of international practice, spanning continents and cultures, Sugumar has cultivated a reputation for crafting spaces that are not merely physical structures but living, breathing biographies of their contexts. His work is a profound exploration of identity, resilience, and the human condition, where architecture becomes a tool to stitch communities together and articulate their narratives.
As the founder and design director of LAYA Architects, Sugumar’s philosophy intertwines cultural preservation with innovative design, embracing both continuity and change. His projects— an amalgamation of sculptural fluidity, historical dialogue, and social engagement—are testaments to the transformative power of architecture. This article delves into six seminal works that exemplify his ability to enhance communities and redefine cultural landscapes. Under his leadership, LAYA Architects has been actively involved in enhancing community development through projects in India, China, and the USA, while also pursuing conceptual work in Europe.
TURKU MUSEUM OF HISTORY AND FUTURE: A SPACE OF COLLECTIVE MEMORY
As a competition proposal, the Turku Museum of History and Future (Finland) exemplifies Prabhu Sugumar’s profound understanding of place and identity. Envisioned as an abstraction of Turku’s rich history, the museum’s design distills the city’s layered biographies into a sculptural congregation space. The design takes inspiration from the geographical location (archipelago), the city’s cultural heritage as a market place by the ocean historically, transforming them into architectural gestures that reflect the confluence of history and future aspirations.
Sugumar’s approach eschews the traditional museum typology, favoring instead a dynamic civic landmark where community life converges with cultural reflection. The formal gestures of the design celebrate Turku’s heritage while fostering collective engagement, transforming the museum into a spatial embodiment of the city’s resilience and aspirations.

MASJID UL-HAQQ, BALTIMORE: URBAN REGENERATION AND RESILIENT IDENTITY
Masjid Ul-Haqq, established in 1954 and located in Baltimore’s historic Upton neighborhood (USA), stands as the city’s oldest continuously used Islamic place of worship. The mosque has been a cornerstone of the community for nearly 70 years, serving as a spiritual and cultural hub.
In collaboration with mosque leadership and community members, LAYA Architects, under the guidance of Prabhu Sugumar, embarked on the Masjid Ul-Haqq 2030 project—a visionary plan to revitalize and expand the historic structure to meet the needs of its growing congregation.
BALTIMORE MASJID
BALTIMORE MASJID

The design introduces a new facade adorned with reflective aluminum panels, chosen for their mirror-like qualities. This choice is deeply symbolic, as the term “mosque” in Arabic signifies a place of prostration and reflection. The mirrored surfaces poetically reflect the surrounding urban landscape, embodying the mosque’s role as both a sanctuary and a mirror to the city’s soul. As the environment changes with time and weather, so too does the mosque’s appearance, fostering a dynamic dialogue between the sacred space and its urban context.
The revitalization plan includes expanding the building to accommodate the fastgrowing congregation, adding more capacity for classrooms, prayer, and community functions, and rectifying the existing 19thcentury building’s structure and mechanical operations. By 2030, the building’s exterior will be completely transformed, and a new prayer hall will be added to the second floor, topped with four minarets. Inside, an archive, cafeteria, and refurbished restrooms will abound. The area outside the mosque will feature a public amphitheater, art walk, farmers
market, heritage exhibit, skate park, paradise garden, and basketball court. There will also be an exhibition area near the main entrance that tells the building’s remarkable history.
This project not only preserves the mosque’s rich history but also revitalizes the surrounding area, infusing it with new energy and purpose. The reflective facade serves as a metaphor for the mosque’s relationship with the city—ever-changing, responsive, and deeply connected to the community it serves.

ADAPTIVE REUSE IN BEIJING’S HUTONGS: HISTORY REIMAGINED
In the Hutongs southwest of Tiananmen Square, Sugumar transformed a Qing Dynasty factory into a vibrant cultural hub. This adaptive reuse project reinterprets the site’s history while providing a vital space for communal activities. By repurposing original architectural elements, Sugumar retained the spirit of the structure, weaving its narrative into the fabric of the present.
The revitalized space now serves as a gathering place for exhibitions, workshops, and community events, becoming a linchpin for local cultural life. This project reflects Sugumar’s commitment to adaptive reuse as a strategy for cultural sustainability, where architecture becomes a medium for honoring the past while engaging the present.

THE DIPLOMATIC CULTURAL HALL IN BEIJING: A SYMBOL OF UNITY AND IDENTITY
The Multipurpose space at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Secretariat in Beijing stands as a powerful symbol of India’s cultural identity. Sugumar’s design celebrates India’s heritage through intricate detailing, such as its patterned ceiling and elegantly crafted columns, which serve as a metaphorical dialogue between tradition and contemporary language.
Beyond its physical form, the hall functions as a cultural embassy, hosting exhibitions, performances, and diplomatic events that represent the nation’s artistic and architectural legacy. Sugumar’s work here underscores his expertise in translating cultural narratives into iconic spaces that foster international collaboration and understanding.

COMMUNITY HUBS IN SOUTH INDIA: SPACES FOR CONNECTION AND RESILIENCE
In the heart of South India, Prabhu Sugumar has designed spaces that celebrate community, resilience, and tradition, blending functionality with poetic design. Two remarkable projects— the Ondraha Hub and the Karupanaiyuri Multipurpose Hall—stand as beacons of Sugumar’s architectural philosophy, transforming underutilized spaces into vibrant centers of connection and cultural identity.
The Ondraha Project, originally a chocolate factory and retail space, has been reimagined as a hub for children and families. Addressing the lack of recreational and educational facilities in the area, the design incorporates spaces for play, indoor sports, and learning, fostering a sense of community among local residents. The architecture emphasizes inclusivity, offering bright, open areas for collaboration and joy. Ondraha has become more than just a physical space—it’s a living testament to Sugumar’s belief in architecture as a catalyst for social cohesion.

Meanwhile, the Karupanaiyuri Multipurpose Hall, located on the outskirts of Madurai, reflects a deeper connection to the region’s natural and cultural heritage. Encircled by serene water, the design draws inspiration from traditional South Indian village life, with shaded, airy spaces that evoke the comforting embrace of a banyan tree. Constructed with Tarakita blocks, the hall integrates local materials to maintain environmental harmony. The design creates a sanctuary for town folk, offering a venue for weddings, debates, performances, and communal gatherings. It mirrors the rhythms of village life, becoming a focal point where tradition meets contemporary.
GUGGENHEIM PROPOSAL, HELSINKI: A BRIDGE ACROSS REALMS
Another distinguished competition proposal, Sugumar’s vision for the Guggenheim Museum in Helsinki explores architecture’s potential to unify disparate elements of the urban fabric. His design elevates a public space into a sculptural platform that serves as both a landmark and a bridge, connecting the park, the city, and the ocean.
The elevated design not only allows for seamless pedestrian movement over the express highway but also creates a fluid interaction between the museum and the surrounding environment. The space fosters community engagement while celebrating the natural and urban context, embodying Sugumar’s mastery of integrating infrastructure and culture into cohesive, transformative designs.

PUBLIC OUTREACH – COMMUNITY BUILDING

EXPERIENCE ITALIAN ELEGANCE WITH LA DOLCE VITA
A CAPTIVATING BATHROOM COLLECTION INSPIRED BY TIMELESS ITALIAN DESIGN.

Innovative technology for efficient, sustainable water use
SIdeal Standard has introduced its newest design innovation, La Dolce Vita®. Inspired by Italy’s rich design heritage and crafted by renowned Chief Design Officer Roberto Palomba, this collection aims to recreate ‘the sweet life.’ From vanities to shower accessories, La Dolce Vita® brings beauty, functionality, and sustainability into everyday living spaces. It represents Ideal Standard’s commitment to reimagining bathrooms as sanctuaries that inspire tranquility and creativity.
Speaking about the collection, Roberto Palomba remarked, “With this new range, I aimed to reinterpret La Dolce Vita. The phrase conjures a lifestyle where beauty is celebrated in both the ordinary and extraordinary. La Dolce Vita® creates a space where creativity and dreams flourish. It was essential to bring this vision to life in every design detail.”
This vision has been brought to life in a collection that offers complete bathroom solutions. Whether it's vanities, bathtubs,
toilets, or mixers, every item in the range has been designed to seamlessly integrate with Ideal Standard’s Singular™ philosophy. This approach prioritizes compatibility and flexibility, giving homeowners and designers the freedom to personalize bathroom spaces to suit their preferences without compromising on elegance or performance.

A FULLY INTEGRATED BATHROOM SOLUTION
La Dolce Vita® features a full range of bathroom components, ensuring cohesive design and functionality across all elements. Highlights include:
Vanities and Vessels: Available in multiple sizes, with asymmetrical options for added style and storage functionality.
Bathtubs: A freestanding design that serves as a centerpiece while echoing understated sophistication.
Toilets and Bidets: Equipped with cutting-edge technologies like AquaBlade® and RimLS+® for efficient flushing and superior hygiene.
Mixer Taps and Shower Systems: Featuring EcoFlow regulators to reduce water usage and available in various finishes such as classic chrome, brushed gold, magnetic grey, and silver storm.
Designed with both style and sustainability in mind, each piece in the collection is intended
to inspire relaxation and creativity in a well-organized and serene environment.
INTRODUCING FINESSE: PERFECTLY COMPLEMENTING LA DOLCE VITA®
Launched alongside La Dolce Vita®, the Finesse furniture series enhances the collection’s aesthetic and functionality. Finesse blends seamlessly with other Ideal Standard collections, offering designers and homeowners endless customization options. Its clean, modern design incorporates recessed
handles and a range of sizes and finishes. Customers can choose from four matte colors and two wood finishes, with options for one, two, or four drawers. The series also includes open shelving to accommodate various storage needs.
A key focus during the development of Finesse was sustainability. All materials are sourced from sustainably managed forests and meet strict Chain of Custody certification standards. This ensures that while customers enjoy high-quality craftsmanship, they also contribute to eco-friendly practices that protect the environment.
A BALANCE BETWEEN GEOMETRY AND NATURE
Aesthetic harmony defines the La Dolce Vita® collection. Its designs carefully balance geometric precision with organic forms, drawing inspiration from the natural environment. The result is a collection that captures attention without overpowering the senses.
The vanities and ceramic components, such as toilets and vessel basins, showcase flowing lines and soft curves that evoke a sense of tranquility. The deep, flower-shaped vessel basins are particularly striking, offered in both square and round designs. These vanities are available in six different sizes, including standout asymmetric models that provide both visual interest and practical storage solutions.
The freestanding bathtub is a signature feature of the collection, designed to command attention without sacrificing subtle elegance. It reflects the essence of a relaxed Italian lifestyle, where every detail, no matter how small contributes to a cohesive and calming space.

Balanced design inspired by nature and geometry

INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES
FOR MODERN LIVING
While La Dolce Vita® thrives on style, it is equally impressive in terms of technology and sustainability. Ideal Standard has integrated advanced technologies to improve water efficiency, durability, and hygiene across the collection’s products.
KEY INNOVATIONS INCLUDE:
AquaBlade® and RimLS+® Technology:
These toilet systems ensure superior flushing performance with reduced water consumption. A full flush uses only 4.5 liters, promoting sustainability without compromising functionality.
EcoFlow Regulators: Integrated into taps and showers, these regulators optimize water flow, significantly lowering water usage to support
environmentally friendly practices.
FirmaFlow® Ceramic Cartridges: Designed for durability, these cartridges enhance the longevity of mixer taps and maintain smooth operation over time.
PVD-Coated Finishes: The collection's sophisticated finishes—available in brushed gold, magnetic grey, and silver storm—are treated with Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) technology. This ensures the surfaces are scratchresistant, hard-wearing, and capable of maintaining their brilliance over time.
These innovations reflect Ideal Standard’s commitment to delivering long-term value through sustainable technology. Customers can enjoy elegantly designed spaces that meet the demands of modern living while promoting responsible resource use.
A PHILOSOPHY OF SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability is woven into every aspect of the La Dolce Vita® collection, aligning with Ideal Standard’s broader mission to create environmentally responsible solutions. Plural by VitrA, Shared Intimacy
Combining Timeless Elegance with Innovation to Transform Bathrooms into Inviting and Functional Spaces.

The Plural Collection by VitrA, designed by Terri Pecora in collaboration with the VitrA Design Studio, challenges the traditional concept of the bathroom, transforming it into a vibrant, social, and harmonious space. Inspired by the iconic design trends of the mid-20th century, Plural reimagines bathrooms as places of connection, warmth, and shared intimacy.
Plural embraces the idea of the bathroom as more than a functional space, it’s an environment for interaction and creativity. By blending light, airy furniture with refined design elements, the collection evokes the feel of a vintage living room, offering a fresh approach to modern bathroom aesthetics.
Blurring Boundaries with Innovative Design
At the heart of Plural is a groundbreaking philosophy that encourages unconventional layouts. Floating washbasins, one of the collection’s signature features, seem to defy gravity as they hover away from walls and can even be installed in the center of the room. This versatility is achieved through advanced syphon solutions, enabling seamless and clean installations regardless of location.
Another standout feature is the wall-hung vertical mirror, which glides side to side, offering functionality from multiple angles. This clever design enhances the usability of shared spaces and reflects Plural’s vision of a bathroom as a communal hub.
Through its emphasis on innovation and flexibility, Plural enables architects and designers to rethink traditional bathroom layouts and create environments that foster engagement and connection.
Furniture That Defines Elegance and Durability
Plural’s furniture strikes a perfect balance between aesthetic appeal and structural integrity. The collection’s graphic black legs provide a modern edge, while solid wood countertops add warmth and authenticity, making them a striking centerpiece in any bathroom. For those who prefer alternatives, the collection also offers ceramic countertops in a variety of innovative colors.
These pieces cater to diverse design preferences, allowing professionals to customize spaces to meet their unique visions.
To complete the collection’s cohesive look, Plural integrates seamlessly with Origin taps, ensuring that every element complements the next. This attention to detail creates a unified aesthetic that enhances the appeal of residential, hospitality, and commercial spaces alike.
Technology Meets Artistry
Plural isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s also a celebration of technical innovation. The collection introduces three advanced syphon solutions that conceal pipes and enable washbasins to be mounted at unconventional angles. These configurations allow for a freer, more dynamic approach to bathroom layouts, whether the basins are positioned for communal use or mounted in open spaces.
This forward-thinking design approach extends to other elements of the collection. Plural’s WC pans and urinals feature a seamless, compact design that’s equally suited for private residences and commercial spaces. With options for standard and monoblock versions, these fixtures ensure that functionality doesn’t compromise style. By pairing technology with artistry, Plural provides architects, developers, and designers with the tools to create bathrooms that are both practical and inspiring.
A Subtle Palette for Timeless Appeal
Plural’s color palette reflects its ethos of understated elegance. Soft tones and earthy hues break away from the conventional starkness of traditional bathroom design, offering a sense of tranquillity and harmony. These colors are paired with high-quality materials to create a sophisticated yet approachable aesthetic that resonates with modern tastes.

ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE MEETS ISLAMIC HERITAGE
WITH A REPUTATION FOR INNOVATION, SL RASCH GMBH EXCELS IN PROVIDING CREATIVE DESIGN AND ENGINEERING SOLUTIONS, NOTABLY IN THE FIELDS OF LIGHTWEIGHT AND SPECIAL STRUCTURES. THE COMPANY, WHICH WAS FOUNDED BY MAHMOUD BODO RASCH IN 1980, IS RENOWNED FOR ITS FUSION OF INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY, PRECISE ENGINEERING, AND ARTISTIC ELEMENTS, OFTEN INSPIRED BY ISLAMIC ARCHITECTURAL TRADITIONS.
The company, which was founded by Mahmoud Bodo Rasch in 1980, is renowned for its fusion of innovative technology, precise engineering, and artistic elements, often inspired by islamic architectural traditions.
“SL Rasch has a strong focus on projects in the Middle East, particularly in Saudi Arabia. Our work frequently integrates elements of Islamic architecture, making it particularly well-suited for projects involving religious or cultural significance,” says Stefan Schöne, Head of Engineering at SL Rasch.
One of SL Rasch’s most notable projects is the design and installation of giant, retractable umbrellas at the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, Saudi Arabia. The technical brilliance and aesthetic allure of the umbrellas converge harmoniously, providing a peaceful sanctuary from the scorching sun for countless worshippers.

STEFAN SCHÖNE

MASTERING LIGHTNESS: ARCHITECTURE INSPIRED BY NATURE
In the past, the firm has worked closely with the pioneer of lightweight construction, Frei Otto, who passed away on 9 March 2015, at the age of 89. Otto’s death came just days before he was announced as the laureate of the 2015 Pritzker Architecture Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in architecture. His legacy, though, lives on, with Stefan explaining: “His work, characterized by a harmonious blend of nature´s laws and conditions, paired with engineering excellence, fundamentally reshaped architectural thinking in the 20th century. He always looked for the most obvious, practical and long-lasting solutions, without approaching projects primarily from a design perspective. His designs, which were often inspired by natural shapes like soap skins or suspended structures, showed that lightweight construction was aesthetically

pleasing and highly efficient at the same time. By focusing on efficiency, minimal materials, and the emulation of natural shapes, Otto revolutionized modern architecture and created some of the most iconic and groundbreaking structures. His work continues to be highly relevant and influential.”
Otto created minimum surface shapes that resulted in the least amount of material being used to achieve maximum structural efficiency. This method was not only concerned with resource conservation but also with crafting structures that were sleek, transparent, and lightweight. He employed advanced structural analysis and experimentation, often using models to test the limits of materials under tension. This allowed him to develop structures that were incredibly light yet strong.
Perhaps his most famous project was the Munich Olympic Stadium (1972). With its striking tensile roofs composed of acrylic glass and cables, this undertaking showcases Otto’s signature form-finding technique and economical use of materials.
“This is a philosophy that SL Rasch continues to promote today,” says Stefan. “with our work often involving the use of advanced materials and technologies, such as lightweight composites, high-strength fabrics, and complex structural analysis techniques. Furthermore, our close partnerships with institutions, laboratories and materials scientists enable us to push the boundaries of lightweight convertible or mobile architecture, allowing us to consistently deliver projects that defy expectations.”

“SL Rasch has designed several retractable roof systems for mosques and other environments”

CREATING ICONIC SPACES WITH PRECISION AND PURPOSE
The company's architectural designs prioritize customer and user needs as well as integration into the existing environment with the utmost respect. With the Sliding Domes, for example, SL Rasch has designed movable high-tech domes with a traditional appearance, located also in the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. During the day, they shade the 27 square inner courtyards and protect pilgrims from direct sunlight; at night, the domes are opened and cold air can flow in to cool down the building. An innovative mechanism for the domes, which move on guide rails, allows them to be opened or closed within a minute. This project is a perfect example of SL Rasch's dedication to integrating cultural and religious symbolisms into their innovative designs.
“SL Rasch has designed several retractable roof systems for mosques and other environments, allowing spaces to be used comfortably in
varying weather conditions. Thanks to the adaptability of the structures, an optimal climate can be created with minimum energy input, even under extreme external conditions,” says Stefan. “Saudi Arabia is an increasingly important market for SL Rasch because of the country’s ambitious development projects, its focus on expanding religious and cultural infrastructure, and the demand for innovative architectural solutions that align with the region’s climatic and cultural needs.
“We have specialized expertise in designing structures that enhance the functionality and comfort of these sacred spaces, such as the giant retractable umbrellas at the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina or the tent city in Mina for the temporary accommodation of more than 2 million pilgrims during Hajj, offering safety, comfort and hygiene. This unique capability aligns perfectly with Saudi Arabia’s goals of improving the pilgrimage experience.”

SL Rasch has become the preferred partner for highprofile ventures in Saudi Arabia

DESIGNING THE FUTURE OF LIGHTWEIGHT ARCHITECTURE
By seamlessly blending modern engineering and Islamic architectural elements, SL Rasch’s designs not only serve a functional purpose but also deeply resonate with Saudi Arabia’s commitment to preserving Islamic heritage while embracing progress.
Thanks to its track record of success and expertise in delivering pioneering projects, SL
Rasch has become the preferred partner for high-profile ventures in Saudi Arabia, earning the trust and support of local stakeholders.
“Our expertise in engineering custom lightweight structures tailored to specific needs sets us apart, providing Saudi projects with unique, technologically advanced solutions that are not easily replicated by other firms,” Stefan says.
SL Rasch’s ability to engineer custom lightweight structures is based on detailed planning, a scientific design approach and careful material selection, which positions it as an essential partner for Saudi Arabia’s future projects, in line with the nation’s sustainability objectives. The firm’s emphasis on designing long-lasting functional and visually appealing structures, following nature´s rules combined with innovative technology and a timeless design approach, pay homage to Frei Otto’s

legacy of efficiency, minimal material usage, and the integration of organic shapes in his revolutionary architectural designs. Following Otto´s approach, SL Rasch explores radically new approaches to reach true innovation instead of optimizing existing solutions.
