comfort, and that is certainly true of Independence Center. The nonprofit strives to offer a safe space for adults dealing with mental illness to connect with others facing similar challenges. Founded in 1981, it uses a Clubhouse model to help members develop the necessary skills to succeed in society and lead productive lives.

Clubhouse is a model of psychosocial rehabilitation that focuses on strengthening an individual’s abilities rather than treating the person as a patient with an illness. Independence Center owns and operates four apartment buildings for its members and provides psychiatric services at Midwest Psychiatry, but its main facility is the Clubhouse, where each member is responsible for helping it operate, according to development specialist Abby Berger. The Clubhouse is structured to mirror the expectations and relationships of a workplace. Members help with a variety of tasks, including preparing meals, giving tours and teaching classes. The goal is to help them realize their capabilities and make them feel needed while also developing skills and providing opportunities for social growth. “We hope that people feel proud of the work they accomplish, and empowered to take the skill set to an employment opportunity,” Berger says.

Independence Center offers its members a variety of services. Its transitional employment program partners with companies to provide entry-level positions for members for six to nine months. This allows them to get employment experience without the stress of an interview process, Berger explains. “The fear of disclosing your mental illness or explaining gaps in your résumé is eliminated,” she says. “It’s a short duration, so it’s great for someone who has never worked or is trying to get back into the workforce.” Independence Center also helps its members find full-time employment and mentors them in interview prep and résumé writing. The holistic program helps them prepare for the HiSET (a high school equivalency test) or a college degree. It also offers budgetary and financial education with the assistance of BMO Harris Bank, and addresses health issues at its Wellness Center in the Clubhouse.

To help make these services possible, Independence Center hosts its annual fundraising gala, Dancing with the Saint Louis Stars. It will be held at The Ritz-Carlton Jan. 27. Berger says the event raised more than $800,000 last year. “There’s an element of entertainment and fun in the performances, but the best thing is to see the community engagement across the board,” she says.

“Every dollar we raise helps us reach more people.”

Alongside community leaders and professional dancers, DeAndra Smith is participating as a representative of the members of Independence Center. Smith became a member in 2014 after seven years of combating severe depression, anxiety and PTSD without a home or adequate employment. Through Independence Center, he was able to find a community of support, safe and affordable housing, and a place to use his culinary skills. His next goal is a master’s degree in culinary arts, and he hopes to someday open his own restaurant. “DeAndra exemplifies our mission,” Berger says. “He serves as the face and voice of mental illness, helping to break the stigma by letting others know and see him.”

I WAS EXPECTING TO MEET A COUPLE OF

rabble rousers when I went to have coffee with two young adults, both recent graduates from Washington and Cornell universities. They have not gone for 'the money,’ but instead have started a foundation. I thought they certainly would have some great stories about bucking the norm.

As you know from last week’s column, I feel that I have grown complacent. No more protests or attempts on my part to change anything. In my fictional life, I was the person leading the charge for change, the one on the front line. I wanted people to ‘stick it to The Man' until I realized what I really wanted was to become ‘The Man’. Once I graduated college and got my first loan payment, I knew I couldn't really lead any campaign for change; I just needed a job! I would have to ‘raise my voice’ on my own time. So I was excited to meet two people who had hit pause and were not following the typical path of most graduates from top-tier universities.

Meghan Bach and Will Shao were not what I expected. Neither looked like rabble rousers. I was the only one with a visible tattoo. As we chatted, I learned Will had been to only one protest, Meghan none. Neither had been involved in any political campaigns or stood outside a polling place handing out information about a particular issue. Instead, because they had been given so much in life, they wanted to work on an issue that might not be profitable, but that means something to them.

Will and Meghan formed Representation and Education Advocacy for Children (Reach), which supports parents who have children with learning disabilities in the public school system.

The organization helps with setting up proper testing and individual learning plans (IEPs). It can be a cumbersome process, something they both understand because their families have been affected. After doing their research, they filed documentation and became recognized as a 501(c).

They are now able to start their work. Their first step is to set up a parent-to-parent network because they realize funding is needed, which means grant writing and fundraising. And then they have to make sure people know what they're trying to do, which means building a public presence. Oh, and in the meantime, they have to support themselves. Each has a job since there is that whole thing about needing to eat.

So in a way, it would have been much easier for them to just get a job right out of college and not follow their passion. Yeah, but they didn’t.

I am not sure what will happen to Will and Meghan.

They are new to this endeavor, but I am certain that if passion and hard work are any measures of success, very soon they will be making a difference in our community. Not ‘sticking it to The Man’ but rather helping 'The ’Man’ and his children. That’s pretty darn nice, don’t you think?

The 1950s, arguably, were the greatest era of Jewish humor. Take my wife. Please. With apologies to Henny Youngman, Jack Benny, George Burns, Jerry Lewis et al., if the best humor comes from pain, that is certainly understandable, considering the unspeakable horrors visited on the Jews in the 1930s and 1940s. But in the post-war years, no Nazis remained to force anyone to wear a Star of David on their sleeve. It was time for a collective sigh of relief.

For a while. There was an altogether different type of discrimination in the 1950s, which a new play evokes.

Poking fun at the notorious McCarthy hearings of the 1950s, a one-man show—A Jewish Joke, a New Jewish Theatre production—runs Nov. 29 to Dec. 10 at The J in Creve Coeur. So, what’s it all about? The havoc wreaked by ‘Tail-gunner Joe’ and his ilk, mostly. U.S. Sen. Joseph McCarthy created the infamous blacklist to ferret out alleged Communists in all aspects of American life. (And, to exhume McCarthy: Weren’t many Jews also stinkin’ Reds?) Hollywood was a particularly nasty target for McCarthyism, and in this play, we meet irascible comedy screenwriter Bernie Lutz (Phil Johnson), who is about to open a big movie.

Oy, gevalt! Much to his surprise and chagrin, Bernie finds that he’s been blacklisted. He’s confronted with the dilemma of naming names and implicating his writing partner in order to save himself and his career.

(If this feels eerily familiar, just switch out Judaism for Islam—and it’s today.) Written by Phil Johnson and Marni Freedman, the production will be staged at Wool Studio Theater in the A&E Building on the Jewish Community Center’s Staenberg Family Complex, 2 Millstone Campus Drive. (Although city employees will need to make sure they are charged overnight!) On Thursdays and Fridays from 5 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays

During hours the service operates, there usually are open public parking spaces at Kirkwood City Hall, the Station Plaza garages and customer parking in the northern end of the district. Connector drivers will pick up and drop off at those locations. Down the road, additional stops could be added. The method to all this free transportation madness? City officials

Hours add up. Just ask anyone who’s been sentenced to doing so many dozens or hundreds of community service hours. As punishment for a crime, it may seem like it takes forever. But for a group? Well, let’s see whether SLU students, staff and faculty—plus anyone in the metro, and the world at large—can log 200 years of service within one year.

That’s 1.75 million hours of service! To celebrate its bicentennial, SLU has unveiled a large, illuminated digital clock at Grand and Lindell boulevards (across from St. Francis Xavier Church) to keep track of just

how much we can do for one another in 12 months.

The goal is to reach the total by Nov. 14, 2018, the 200th anniversary of the Jesuit institution. It won’t be much of a stretch for the SLU community alone; typically they log 1.6 million volunteer hours a year.

The clock was ‘started’ yesterday—Tuesday, Nov. 14— by a student who entered volunteer hours dedicated to SLU’s Campus Kitchens. (The program rescues food that would otherwise be discarded, as well as goods from grocery stores and food banks. Students then prepare meals that are delivered to homeless shelters, transitional living homes, low-income families and senior citizens.) The clock will update in real time as volunteer hours are submitted. We can all join in; there’s an app for that! (Meanwhile, your faithful scribe wonders whether there are enough places to the left of the decimal point to accommodate all of the volunteer hours entered. Let’s hope they exceed even their own expectations!) &

meet volunteer TORI BOLTON of southampton How long have you been a volunteer?

I’ve been serving on the board for a little more than two years.

What made you interested in this particular cause?

I was introduced to Caring for Kids by Susan Block. She is a mentor of mine and was a pioneer in founding the organization 14 years ago. I was struggling with a lot of emotions due to local events that occurred around 2015.

I wanted to make a difference, and I feel that change truly starts with children. They are the future of everything.

When I learned about Caring for Kids, it was like the stars aligned! The board needed a new member, and I was looking for an organization that gives back. Caring for Kids helps children going through the judicial system be reunited with their families, and makes an impactful difference in their lives. It was a match made in heaven.

What kind of volunteer work are you involved with?

I now serve as vice president of the board. A lot of my time and energy is devoted to fundraising efforts. For the past three years, I’ve co-chaired the fall fundraiser, which is our biggest event of the year. It’s focused on raising awareness throughout the community and raising funds to provide school supplies, uniforms, bus passes, bedding and whatever the kids may need. One of my duties is finding exciting items for the silent auction.

For 2017, our goal is to provide 80 beds with bedding.

That means raising around $16,000. We’re small, but we’re mighty. Every little bit goes a long way. In August, we provided beds to 27 children in St. Louis County. I’ve also organized a Young Professionals Board to help raise awareness about the organization in the under-40 age group.

IN THE WORDS OF CARING FOR KIDS: “Tori is the Energizer Bunny with a never-ending smile. She takes on any task for our mission with gusto, and we know whatever it is will be done well. Tori’s devotion to the kids we serve is endless. She is the breath of fresh air that every nonprofit needs—and Caring for Kids is so lucky to have her!”

If you could do anything for the organization, what would it be?

Even though Caring for Kids has been around for 14 years, I don’t think there is enough awareness in the community. I want to change that and bring more publicity to our cause. I’m not in the legal profession, so my understanding of the judicial system and foster care is limited. I think it’s that way for a lot of people in our community. Caring for Kids educated me on how the process works and how big of an impact it has on children’s lives. I want more people to be aware and get involved. Also, Caring for Kids only serves people in St. Louis County. I want to move our efforts into the city, so we truly serve all of St. Louis.

WHAT GUY DOESN’T WANT TO BE JAMES BOND? In terms of the good looks, the women, the

clothes, the money, the British accent, the license to kill and the car, I’m pretty close. Well, at least I got to drive the car for a short time.

The new Aston Martin DB11 hasn’t appeared in a Bond film yet because it’s so new, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it shows up in the next one. The styling of the DB11 is unmistakably Aston Martin, but a contrasting strip is a new design element, and the rear styling is a bit more angular and edgy. It’s still stunningly beautiful and sexy with a luxurious leather interior and the roar of its ridiculously powerful 600-horsepower, V12 engine. This is a car you can take to the country club and the track.

The suspension and steering are adjustable independent of the transmission, so you can tailor your sport/comfort preferences to meet particular driving conditions. In GT mode, it’s quite comfortable and the shifting is smooth. Crank it up to Sport or Sport+, and the DB11 becomes an ultra high-performance beast you want to drive hard. It represents Aston Martin’s first use of a turbocharged engine, and good engineering has incorporated it seamlessly with nary a trace of turbo lag. Power seems endless, and thanks to almost instantaneous throttle response, there’s always more than enough when you stomp on the skinny pedal. You reach 60 mph in under 4 seconds. In automatic mode, the transmission can kick down a gear or two to give you the desired acceleration, or you can use the paddle shifters behind the steering wheel to select your own gears.

Handling is superb, especially when you tighten up the suspension. Steering is tight and precise; the stiff suspension keeps the body flat even in extreme cornering. It feels like it’s on rails. Brakes are excellent and fully capable of pulling you back from astronomical speeds. Dynamic stability control ensures that, at worst, you’ll be shaken—not stirred—if you overdo it.

Instead of a traditional gearshift lever, the DB11 has buttons on the center console for transmission mode selection. The start/stop engine button offers a ‘quiet mode’ if you don’t want to subject your neighbors to the engine’s loud roar. Gauges are on a virtual video screen that displays much more than just your speed. A larger, 8-inch screen at the top of the center console is controlled by a remote rotary knob and displays infotainment data and camera images. Parking sensors are also a great help. A touch panel has ‘buttons’ to control the dual-automatic climate system, heated and cooled seats, and most radio functions, though volume and tuning knobs are lacking. A volume control button on the steering wheel compensates. Sumptuous leather and wood accents lend characteristic British charm and class throughout the cockpit.

Technically, there is a rear seat, but its use should be reserved for transporting toddlers or torturing bad guys. The trunk is also of modest size, and the opening is not very large, but it could probably fit a set of golf clubs. According to David Humphrey, brand manager at Aston Martin St. Louis, part of St. Louis Motorsports, “The DB11 is the standard-bearer of an all-new generation of Aston Martins. It’s the most beautiful, powerful and efficient DB in the company’s history.”

If you’re willing to give up 100 horsepower to save a few dollars, a V8 version of the DB11 will be out next year.

EVERY YEAR THE JEWISH BOOK FESTIVAL brings to town a

lineup of remarkable authors. For the modest sum of $18, you can hear—and meet—the likes of Alice Hoffman (The Marriage of Opposites) and Sidney Blumenthal (The Political Life of Abraham Lincoln). For $99, you can go to hear all of them (about 40 total), including the two keynote speakers: Zac Posen and Sen. Barbara Boxer.

I’m sure Sen. Boxer was great Nov. 5, but I was mostly intrigued

by Posen, a top fashion designer with St. Louis ties (his dad Stephen went to University City High School and Washington University School of Fine Arts). He recently authored a cookbook, Cooking with Zac: Recipes from Rustic to Refined, and says his matzo balls are “light and fluffy—these are no sinkers.” The 36-year-old designer to the stars (and to 16 clothing lines, including Brooks Brothers of which he is creative director) was charming and engaging during his presentation in front of a local crowd who clearly also were curious about his career tangent.

Posen says he “needs cooking as a fashion detox.” Apparently he loves to cook (and bake), and he’s got some kitchen cred to prove it. The Project Runway judge has cooked at the James Beard House in New York, and his recipes have appeared on vogue.com and in Food & Wine. Posen’s cookbook is organized by fashion seasons—Spring & Summer, Resort, Fall & Winter, Holiday—which makes sense, since that’s how his entire life is organized.

As you would expect from an artist, the color images in Posen’s book are visually gorgeous, which he chalks up to “driving everyone crazy by being a perfectionist,” and to examining hundreds of portfolios before finding the right photographer. He explains that just about every tablecloth, platter and serving piece pictured in the book was rummaged from his parents’ basement. Among his favorite recipes, he lists linguine vongole, soups (including borscht) and homemade ice creams.

Posen is a New Yorker, born and bred in SoHo, and says he was raised to value creativity above all else. He admits it took him some time to also develop the business side of running a fashion empire: “I’ve grown to be someone who makes decisions and owns them.”

With strong ties to our city, Posen remembers the highlights of his visits here as a youth, including Ozzie Smith’s back flips, toasted ravioli and “the best barbecue ever.” In fact, he credits (or blames) his dad’s Missouri roots for the clunky smoker the older Posen built and uses at the family’s Buck’s County, Pennsylvania, estate. Does that mean St. Louis can take a little credit for inspiring the cookbook?

It didn’t.

By early morning, he was pale, perspiring and shaking, with an increased heart rate and low blood pressure. He was seen at a hospital in Illinois, but his condition was so serious that he had to be transferred to SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital.

SLUCare vascular surgeon Dr. Michael Williams met him there and prepared him for emergency surgery.

Grzywacz had suffered a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm that measured a surprising 8 centimeters (3.15 inches) in diameter, Williams says. The damaged vessel was leaking blood into the abdomen, creating a life-threatening situation. “A normal aorta measures 2.5 to 3 centimeters,” Williams notes. “When an aneurysm enlarges the vessel to more than 5 centimeters, its chance of bursting increases dramatically. For Ron’s aorta to make it to 8 centimeters before rupturing was highly unusual.”

Williams and his team performed endovascular aneurysm repair surgery, a minimally invasive procedure using small groin incisions. A stent inserted through an artery is guided upward to the site of the aneurysm.

“The stent seals the vessel from the inside and stops the bleeding,” Williams explains. The procedure offers advantages over traditional surgical repair techniques that involve a larger abdominal incision, more recovery time and a greater risk of pain or infection, he says.

Grzywacz was only 54 when his aneurysm burst, putting him well below the typical age range of patients with the condition, according to Williams. “It’s most common in Caucasian men over 65 who smoke,” he says. “Ron met three of those four criteria.” Genetic factors also can play a role, as not every smoker develops an aneurysm, he says. And it’s rare for the condition to

show up in people who don’t smoke.

Grzywacz’s case may be unusual in some ways, but he is not alone. Like him, most patients are unaware they have the condition until the vessel ruptures, says Dr. Matt Smeds, a SLUCare vascular surgeon. If they are fortunate enough to have an abdominal scan for another reason, and it identifies an aneurysm before it bursts, surgery can be performed to prevent rupture.

“There is a 70 to 80 percent risk of death when this type of aneurysm bursts,” Smeds explains. “In most people who survive, it’s because the body has contained the bleeding to some extent. The aorta runs behind other organs and tissues, which may put pressure on the rupture point and slow the bleeding. We think that is what happened in Ron’s case.”

While Grzywacz recovered well from his lifesaving surgery, he had some understandable fears about his long-term recovery. “I’m an equipment operator, so I worried about being able to do everything I needed to when I returned to work,” he says.

To help him regain his footing, the SLUCare team provided Grzywacz with important additional services.

“We have occupational therapists and dietitians to help patients like Ron stay healthy,” Smeds says. “I am a certified tobacco treatment specialist, and we have a good program to help patients stop smoking. A ruptured aneurysm is an eye-opening experience for most people, but some still may be tempted to start smoking

again. This is a good time for us to intervene and help them understand why they need to quit permanently.”

Grzywacz and his wife, Cindy, say the care he has received from SLUCare physicians and staff at Saint Louis University Hospital has been extremely thorough and compassionate. “Getting Dr. Williams as my husband’s surgeon was like winning the lottery,” Cindy says. “Ron was on the operating table within minutes of arriving at the emergency room. The attention we’ve received from the team has been awesome, and they have continued to answer all of our questions carefully.

They never rush us through a follow-up appointment.

If I ever need surgery myself, I won’t go anywhere else.”

Her husband adds, “The team truly cares that you understand everything that’s going on with your surgery.

They make you feel that you really matter. The nurses are helpful and supportive, and they have continued to be that way in my follow-up visits. After coming home from surgery, I was back to my job in about six weeks, and I have had no difficulties at all.”

Williams has some important advice for those who may be at risk for this kind of aneurysm. “The best way to lower your chances of having one is to quit smoking or avoid starting,” he says. “We really want to get that message out to the public. If you have smoked more than 100 cigarettes in your life, you are at risk for the condition.”

Smeds says SLUCare is developing new, even faster protocols to transfer patients with urgent aortic problems from other hospitals. “The sooner we can get them into an operating room, the better their outcomes will be,” he says.

IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF YOUR CIRCULATORY SYSTEM. Several lifestyle factors can set us up for atherosclerosis, a condition in which a waxy substance (plaque) builds up in the arteries that carry blood throughout the body. The plaque hardens and creates blockages that can lead to heart attack, stroke and even death. Heredity plays a big role, but risk can be reduced with good practices, says Dr. Norman Bein of Vein Specialties. “You can't outrun your genes,” he says. “But exercising, avoiding tobacco and eating a balanced, low-carb diet can contribute to a long life with minimal illness.”

HERE'S HOW THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM IS AFFECTED BY DIET AND LIFESTYLE:

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DON'T EXERCISE? Being inactive greatly increases your chances of circulatory problems, even if you don't have other risk factors. It can contribute to high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes and obesity.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DRINK TOO MUCH ALCOHOL? Too much alcohol can contribute to heart muscle disorders, arrhythmias, high blood pressure and stroke. If you drink, limit intake to one or two drinks a day for men, and one for women.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR WEIGHT IS TOO HIGH? Carrying extra pounds, especially around the stomach, strains the heart and increases risk for diabetes. If you're overweight, losing just 5 to 10 percent of your body weight can have a positive impact on blood sugar, blood pressure and heart health.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU SMOKE? Chemicals in cigarette smoke can harm blood cells and damage the structure of your heart and blood vessels, increasing risk of atherosclerosis. When tobacco use is combined with other factors like unhealthy blood cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and obesity, the risk of heart disease increases.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOUR DIET IS POOR? Consuming too much processed food, salt, red meat, sugarsweetened beverages and rapidly digested carbohydrates (like those in white bread, white rice and potatoes) can contribute to atherosclerosis and other circulatory problems. Instead, eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains and 'good proteins' like those in beans, nuts, fish and poultry. A low- or no-carb diet can help regulate your insulin level and your weight.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DO EAT RIGHT, EXERCISE AND AVOID SMOKING? A balanced diet low in calories and saturated fat helps reduce weight and strain on the heart and blood vessels.

Thirty minutes of moderate physical activity each day decreases risk of problems such as high blood pressure, stroke and diabetes. And just a year after you quit smoking, your heart disease risk drops by more than half.

DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a medical conundrum—a very serious condition that patients often don't know they have. It causes blood clots in a vein deep inside the body or in the extremities, and about half of patients don't show any symptoms. So they may have no idea they need medical help until a crisis occurs.

The most common location for DVT is the thigh, but it also can happen in areas like the lower leg, arm or abdomen, says Washington University vascular surgeon Dr. Mohamed Zayed. “DVT generally occurs when blood is moving too slowly through the veins and it thickens and clumps, causing a clot,” he explains. “It's usually treated with a blood thinner.

What's most dangerous about DVT is that a clot can break free and travel to an artery in the lung, blocking blood flow to parts of it. It is known as a pulmonary embolism, and it can be very serious, even fatal.”

Patients who do experience DVT symptoms usually have discomfort, pain or swelling in the affected limb, according to SLUCare vascular surgeon Dr. Catherine Wittgen. “A physical exam isn't enough to confirm or rule out DVT,” she says. “If

it's suspected, the patient needs an ultrasound, similar to what expectant mothers have. It can show the obstruction and changes in the vein wall, which thickens in response to the clot.”

Those who may be most at risk for DVT include bedridden patients, people who are inactive or overweight, pregnant women, and travelers who sit still for hours on long flights or car trips, Zayed says. “If you are over 40, that also increases your risk,” he notes. “The best medicine is prevention. Don't smoke, be active every day, lose weight if needed, and when you're on a long trip, get up and walk periodically to keep the leg muscles moving.”

Wittgen advises against trying to self-diagnose DVT by reading about it online. “You can get general information about it from reputable websites, but speak with your doctor to find out if you're at risk,” she says.

VARICOSE VEINS In the past, doctors had to treat varicose veins with procedures like vein stripping, which could be painful and require a hospital stay. Today, they can repair the condition with outpatient therapy that needs very little recovery time, says vascular surgeon Dr. Norman Bein of Vein Specialties.

A varicose vein is a superficial blood vessel that has become twisted and enlarged because of malfunctioning valves inside it. Blood pools in the vein because the valves aren’t directing it forward efficiently through the vessel. Varicose veins can be unsightly and cause pain, swelling, fatigue and a feeling of ‘heaviness’ in the legs. If left untreated, the condition can cause additional problems like skin ulcers.

According to Bein, varicose vein treatments are considered medical procedures, so they tend to be covered by insurance.

His practice treats the condition with endovenous laser ablation, an ultrasound-guided technique that takes about half an hour to perform on each leg. “We use the laser to seal affected veins and cut off their blood supply,” Bein notes. “It causes the vessel to adhere to itself and close up. The vein gets nourishment when blood is sitting in it, so it shrinks and disappears once the supply is stopped.” If vein tissue needs to be removed from the leg, Bein can

do that during the same visit.

“We treat one leg at a time, usually a week apart, so patients don’t get too much local anesthesia all at once,” he explains. “We often schedule treatment at the end of the week so they can have a couple of days to rest before returning to work.” Bein says the procedure is popular among doctors, nurses, teachers, police officers and others who spend all day on their feet and may be at risk for the condition.

After treatment, patients return for a six-week follow-up visit.

They may have a small amount of bruising or discomfort in the meantime, but gentle massage and ibuprofen can help, Bein notes.

“Varicose vein therapy has evolved quite a bit over the years,” he says. “After treatment, patients can return quickly to a normal schedule.”

THIS RESTAURANT COMBINES TWO ADMIRED ST. LOUIS ICONS: fried chicken guru Rick Lewis (formerly of Southern) and the storefront in The Grove where Sweetie Pie’s reigned. Lewis, along with his partner and wife Elisa, offers an array of Southern-style country foods like ‘field peas’ (black-eyed peas) and turnip greens along with a satisfying selection of side dishes that come with each entree. That explains the 'Meat + Three' part of the name: You pick a protein, and it comes with two sides, or three for $3 extra.

'Grace,' we surmise, refers to the bounty of the land and the higher power that makes it possible.

Lewis has structured the space as a communal eating spot, something he did at Southern as well, with many large tables meant to foster togetherness. There are also smaller tables for the less socially inclined.

The interior is somewhat reminiscent of Sweetie Pie’s, but updated with a more open feel. The bar side has a kitschy truck grille over the kitchen window and a dining counter that was full both times we visited. This is also where the ordering takes place—a system where people line up out the door to wait for their turn at the register. The main dining room has been painted deep blue, with nostalgic touches like a stuffed pheasant on one wall and framed paint-by-numbers farm scenes on another.

One big draw, food-wise, is Lewis’ fried chicken, available with heat or without. He is known for comfort food, which at Grace includes pork ribs, fried catfish, mac ’n cheese, greens and roast beef.

The latter ($14) will bring back cafeteria memories of sliced roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy. The beef was good—from a local farm, served medium rare and overall pretty tender. The gravy was thick, rather than the au jus I recall from the cafeterias of my childhood.

The STL-Style Duroc Pork Ribs ($12 for a third of a rack) were excellent: very meaty ribs with a sugar glaze and great flavor. Also stellar was the Cornmeal Fried Mississippi Catfish ($14), crispy strips of fish with a crunchy coating that are served with ‘Comeback Sauce,’ a mix of mayo, ketchup and Worcestershire. If you opt to get the fish ‘hot,’ ask for the dipping oil on the side so you can control the Nashville-style heat.

Much attention is given to the sides, which underscore all the themes running through this new place: nostalgia, country cooking, food as comfort, etc. My favorite was the Green Bean Casserole, which mixes fresh beans with mushroom soup as a sort of gravy. Topping the dish are crispy shallots reminiscent of those fried onions we liked so much as kids.

The Macaroni + Cheese was mild and creamy, with a mix of gouda and white cheddar. The Smoked Cabbage was tasty, not overdone in terms of smokiness, and the Roasted Cauliflower was excellent, tossed with a pungent pesto. But the Cracklin Corn Bread, which I remember as exceptional from Southern, was dry here. Making up for it, though, was the biscuit crust that topped my Chicken Pot Pie, a dinner special one night. The pie itself, while tasty, had too much salt and pepper.

Don’t pass up dessert. It can sell out quickly, so ask for it at the same time as your meal. Our Banana Pudding ($6) came with a delicious benne seed sugar cookie and gourmet toasted Italian marshmallow on top.

DOURO VALLEY IN PORTUGAL

THE HISTORY OF WINEMAKING IS INTRIGUING, and

understanding where a particular wine is created makes the product that much more enjoyable. The process is a combination of science and art, and the history can be fascinating.

Port, for instance, has been around for generations, and much of it is still made the same way it was in the past. A fortified wine that is usually sweet, port can be produced only in Portugal. By law, it needs to be aged at least two years. To make a fortified wine, you must add a distilled spirit. Port is most often mixed with brandy during fermentation, which kills the yeast. This keeps the natural sugars from turning into alcohol, giving port its sweet edge. Brandy also helps preserve the port, allowing it to age for years in oak barrels and in the bottle.

A wide variety of grapes for port are grown in the steep, rocky hills of Portugal’s Douro Valley. The hills are lined with vines and stone walls to help protect against erosion. The following are four types of port:

While Chris Hemsworth’s brawny Asgardian prince is a staple of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, the Thor standalone films have been middling entries at best.

In Thor: Ragnarok, director Taika Waititi takes Thor away from the shining fantasy world of Asgard and the familiar locations of earth, dropping him into a colorful cosmic adventure. It’s a pretty big shake-up, and Waititi offers excitement and humor, delivering the strongest entry in the franchise by far.

After his long-confined sister, Hela (Cate Blanchett), breaks free to claim the throne, the god of thunder is expelled from his home world alongside his brother and sometime enemy Loki (Tom Hiddleston). They end up on a planet that serves as a sort of universal junk heap, and Thor struggles to get back to defeat his sister, finding another displaced Asgardian (Tessa Thompson) and his fellow Avenger Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) along the way.

The film shines when it focuses on the relationship between the titular hero and his comrades. Its humor is its strongest asset, but there’s enough action to satisfy most superhero fans. Hela is the weakest element of the film—through no fault of Blanchett’s. Marvel is often criticized for its underdeveloped villains, and she exists simply to menace our heroes and provide exposition. Still, Thor has long deserved a better film, and now, he has one.

ST. LOUISANS ARE PRETTY LUCKY WHEN IT COMES TO FOOD. If you can name it, chances are we have it: Italian, Vietnamese, German, Mexican, French, Indian, Bosnian and so much more. Chef Jessie Gilroy fits right into the city’s mix of culinary treasures. Her career has taken her across the country to experience cuisines from around the world. Her passion for food and flavor innovation led her to leave her prominent role as sous chef at Sidney Street Cafe and open Pangea in St. Charles. “What you cook is an influence of everything you’ve been around and learned about,” she says. “I love food from around the world and have an eclectic heritage. It all sort of works together.”

Gilroy, a St. Louis native, studied at Le Cordon Bleu in Miami, Florida.

Along with her formal instruction, she experienced the city’s exciting blend of cultures. “It was a lot of fun,” she recalls. “I got to experience so many types of South American food—Cuban, Dominican, Puerto Rican.” This exposure to various flavors sparked her interest in how different cuisines can work together. She also lived in Hawaii, where she learned about Asian food and culture.

When she returned home, Gilroy continued to work with multiple food genres. She spent time at Charlie Gitto’s and The Tavern and helped open Cucina Pazzo. But she says her experience at Sidney Street Cafe was her favorite and truly strengthened her culinary repertoire. “I learned all sorts of

new techniques that I had never done or even seen before,” she says. “It was there that I discovered my love of butchery.”

With her varied culinary experiences and interests, Gilroy says she can’t name a favorite dish or style of cuisine. “I just like to cook,” she says. “It doesn’t matter what it is.” The inspiration for her food comes from whatever is in season or sounds good, she explains, which means trips to Herman Farm Orchard to develop new recipe ideas. Her proximity to the farm is a perk of Pangea’s location. Gilroy says getting the space was a stroke of a good luck— quite literally. “My name came up during a golf game, and the next thing I knew, I was going to look at the building,” she says. “I fell in love with New Town and knew it would be a great spot to open my restaurant.”

Gilroy’s vision for Pangea was to create a menu that embraces how flavors from around the world can complement one another. The restaurant’s name reflects this vision. It refers to the supercontinent that existed before movement in the earth’s tectonic plates broke it apart. “Everything was cohesive,” she explains. “There was no divide between cultures; food was shared.” At Pangea, diners will find French Onion Soup alongside Tempura Vegetables and Jerk Fried Chicken. “You don’t have to use just salt and pepper,” Gilroy says. “Flavors from different parts of the world taste great together.”

what are the latest trends in bathrooms?

Bathrooms are dynamic spaces to work with. Homeowners updating their bathroom most often are interested in increasing the room’s comfort and personalizing its style. We see trends in both of these areas.

In terms of comfort, many homeowners are looking for more space to move and relax in their master bathrooms. To accomplish this, space is ‘stolen’ from other rooms, often closets, to increase size. Sometimes, clients want a more open, airy feel but can’t expand the space. To meet the request, cabinetry can replace linen closets and zero-entry showers or free-standing tubs can be installed in place of existing enclosures.

In terms of styling, the quality of finishes in bathrooms is ever-improving. Homeowners want furniture-type details and finishes for bathroom cabinetry to define the aesthetics of their space. Contemporary styling is popular on the coasts, and it’s sure to catch on here as well. Marble and porcelain tile continue to be favorites, while more and more people are using quartz counters. Overall, there is an exciting confluence of materials available for bathrooms!

Manufacturers are promoting high-end products for this space, and homeowners want their bathrooms to be just as beautiful and relaxing as the rest of their home.

Bath industry professionals are seeing a continued interest in ‘soft minimalism.’ This style is characterized by transitional lines and rounded edges. The ‘industrial’ look is another style that is still going strong. There are numerous product collections that can help characterize this style through exposed fittings and flanges.

Another trend we are noticing is customization. For example, certain lines offer faucets that can be altered with various spout lengths, heights and more. Custom vanities also are very popular. One brand might offer a vanity in seven different configurations and more than 50 finishes! Clients can pick their favorite coordinating countertop and mirror, and then accessorize with power outlets, hair dryer holders and more.

For faucet colors, we are seeing a lot of brass tones, including uncoated, satin and aged, as well as gold and bronze in various finishes. Polished nickel also continues to dominate and is actually replacing brushed nickel, and split finishes (a mix) are also trending. We are just starting to sell matte black, a color that has been popular on the coasts for quite some time.

We fell in love with the location of our home in Clayton. It was built in 1907 and has had several additions and alterations over the years that don’t seem to fit the house.

We currently are renovating every inch inside, but are struggling with inspiration for the front. We would love to alter the front entrance, match the windows with shutters that are the right scale, and update the 1980s siding with cement board.

The walkway is odd, and the landscaping is nonexistent. We would love to see ideas that would help us fall in love with our home again! Thank you for your help.

The scale and symmetry of your house provide a great starting point for a revived and handsome composition. Some minor architectural refinements and bold landscape changes will result in a completely different feel to the property.

You will notice new, wider shutters with hardware and a simplified front porch overhang that is better proportioned to the house. New corner pilasters and window trim create a feeling of architectural dignity.

Color changes on the roof, new cement board siding and a red storm door create a dramatic contrast with the white trim, allowing it to make an important statement.

A boxwood hedge gives a new base to the whole house, and an adjacent flower bed adds charm and complements the front door. Ornamental grasses provide an alternate hedge for the asymmetrical wing on the right. A renovated brick walkway resolves the messy approach to the front door, and black urns at the front stoop add a welcoming detail. To my eyes, this seems much more pulled together.
