PEDAL THE CAUSE

by stephanie wallace PEDAL THE CAUSE IS AN INSPIRING EXAMPLE of how powerful it can be when

St. Louisans join forces for a meaningful purpose. Since 2010, the cycling fundraiser has raised more than $51 million to help make 243 research projects possible at Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. For every $1 raised by the fundraiser, an additional $14 is contributed by outside sources, meaning Pedal the Cause has been a catalyst for bringing more than half a billion dollars in research funds to the region to support the fight against cancer. Those numbers represent thousands of people coming together, whether they are riders, volunteers or donors.

Since its inception, the event’s presenting sponsor has been Edward Jones. The company also organizes one of the largest cycling teams. “Pedal the Cause has been transformed by the support of Edward Jones,” says Eleanor Goedeke, director of communications and marketing. “Every year, the company rallies employees around St. Louis and across the country to participate, and the team has raised more than $7 million to date. It has been a major force in helping us fight for a world without cancer.”

One member of Team Edward Jones is Annie Donnell. Born blind, she currently serves as an accessibility services specialist for the company. She is able to participate in the event by tandem biking with her father. This will be their third year riding for Pedal the Cause. “I love the event, and it’s great knowing that you’re helping fund cancer research in St. Louis,” she says. “My brother-in-law passed away from sarcoma cancer in 2018, and I’ve also lost a friend to leukemia. I ride in their honor.”

Donnell got involved with Pedal the Cause shortly after joining Edward Jones. She’s grateful the company has given her the opportunity to support such an important initiative. “I’m glad I was able to jump right into Team Edward Jones—participating is always a highlight of my year,” she says. “There are team rides throughout the year, and before Pedal the Cause weekend, there is a lunch so everyone can meet one another.

Our managing partner Penny Pennington also shares her own personal experience with cancer, which is powerful to hear. It’s a great group to be a part of.”

This year, Donnell is looking forward to tackling the Ted Jones Katy Classic, a 30-mile ride along the Katy Trail. It’s just one of the seven new courses ranging from 10 to 100 miles offered by Pedal the Cause, which will be held Sept. 20 and 21 at the Family Arena in St. Charles. Riders also can opt to use stationary bikes in the Spin Zone or participate virtually. Other highlights of the weekend include Taste the Cause and the Inspirational Program. “We all hope to one day live in a world without cancer,” Goedeke says. “Supporting Pedal the Cause is something you can do to help make that a reality.

Join journalist and documentary filmmaker Laurie Gwen Shapiro for a discussion and signing of The Aviator and the Showman: Amelia Earhart, George Putnam, and the Marriage That Made an American Icon. The author will appear on July 29 at 7 p.m. at the county library’s Clark Family Branch, 1640 S. Lindbergh Blvd., directly across from Plaza Frontenac. The presentation is free.

In 1928, legendary aviatrix Amelia Earhart arrived in the office of George Putnam, heir to the Putnam & Sons publishing throne. A ‘hitmaker,’ Putnam was searching for the right woman to secretly fly across the Atlantic and a partnership—professional and soon otherwise—was born. Shapiro’s nonfiction book unveils the untold story of Earhart’s marriage to Putnam and the pivotal role it played in her enduring legacy. Earhart was fiercely driven, brave, a lifelong feminist and trailblazer. Putnam, the so-called ‘P.T. Barnum of publishing,’ often pushed his authors to extreme lengths in the name of publicity. No one bore that weight more than Earhart did. Their partnership supported her grand ambitions—but Putnam also pressed her into more treacherous stunts for promotion, influencing a certain recklessness up to and including her final flight in

Scams and scammers may seem to be getting more and more sophisticated, but essentially it’s the same old story: Smooth-talking salesperson on the phone tries to get something that you or any other alert consumer should know better than to give. Around tax season, it’s IRS scams.

No, you should never give your Social Security number to anyone over the phone. If the agency needs something from you, they’ll request it by mail. And all year long, it’s common thieves posing as long-lost friends asking you via email to buy them something using your Amazon account, and of course they’ll reimburse you.

(I know, right?) Unfortunate widows get bilked out of their life savings by hoodlums posing as potential paramours. Alas, it’s the elderly who always seem to fall prey to these wild schemes. Which is why Medicare is running PSAs on TV and radio warning about fraud. I’m of Medicare age, and an email I received from the agency linked me to a YouTube warning from none other than Dr. Mehmet Oz, now the head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Your Medicare number is as vulnerable as your Social Security number, and as long as there are bad actors, they’ll try to score something in your name that they’re not entitled to. In the fraud that Dr. Oz is warning us about, the scammer will sign you up for hospice care and fraudulently bill Medicare in your name. Of course, if you’re too young for Medicare, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to warn your parents or grandparents. If you think you may have experienced fraud, call 1.800.MEDICARE (1.800.633.4227) or report it online at medicare.gov/fraud.

The train station has gone to the dogs — and that’s a good thing!

Talented animal athletes and trainers of the Purina Farms Incredible Dog Team have a summer residency at St. Louis Union Station, performing two free shows daily at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday to Sunday through Sept. 28. Although they don’t have collectors’ cards with stats to verify it, these are some of the most talented canines in the country. The daring and delightful dog team consists of more than 20 pooches in top competitive condition, along with two trainers, who entertain audiences with extraordinary feats of athleticism and skill. Spectators can marvel as the team demonstrates a variety of canine sports. Dogs of different breeds fly through the air to catch a flying disc, leap over a high jump and maneuver through a series of obstacles in an agility course.

The team, which features several rescue dogs, is on a mission to prove that with good nutrition, proper training and lots of love, any dog has the ability to love back unconditionally and to perform incredible feats. While the Purina Farms Visitor Center remains temporarily closed, the dog-team spectacles will take place on the Purina Performance Plaza near the St. Louis Wheel Park. She is the 2021 winner of the Damn History Article Award for “The Improbable Journey of Dorothy Parker’s Ashes” in The New Yorker. She is an adjunct journalism professor at New York University.

old town florissant Lia Holter has it Made.— a capital ‘M’ and that period makes up the first third of her craft bakery’s official title: Made. by Lia (with no second period, notably.) That’s in a stylish, raised black script above the door on the neat white brick building, a gut-rehab at 610 Rue St. Francois in Old Town Florissant, where we sat on the patio. That recent Tuesday morning, the ample space was sunny and buzzing, with pollinators—and with customers going in and coming out, many if not most greeting her by name and vice versa. You could be forgiven for not recognizing her on sight, because it was 11 years ago that Holter and her team won America’s Next Great Baker on the TLC cable network. Since 2014, Holter and her family have Made. quite the life for themselves, within a space of just a few blocks. Alas, poor husband Max has to drive—all the way south, maybe 20 minutes, to Clayton—for his job in the financial sector, while Holter can stay right in Old Town and get her kids Ella, 8, James, 5, and Naomi, 10 months, ready for their day, walk them past the bakery to school, then back to work in just a few minutes (in our photo, the two oldest help their mom create scrumptious cupcakes). It’s a long way from there to the Venetian in Las Vegas, where Holter et al. were crowned America’s Next Great Baker, but Holter’s vision has been pretty much clear, and local, since she was a kid helping grandma bake Christmas cookies.

“But I was a dreamer,” she says. “I have a dreamer mentality, and the kitchen is my comfort zone.” And though one day she dreams of more coffee offerings, smoothies and the like at her bakery, wedding cakes are her stock in trade. For many of her unique, exclusive creations, she paints on some colorful icing, with a neo-Impressionistic flair. And she’s soon to give away some trade secrets in her first cookbook—and, no, none created to impress ‘the Cake Boss’ on TLC: “These are recipes someone might actually make,” she laughs. She has an ‘everyday loaf’ that even someone who’s never baked on TV might be able to adapt by switching out ingredients in the dough to create baked goods that may become focaccia or maybe even muffins.

The book is rich with tales from her family blended in, before and after Max, and Holter’s financially adept husband has been essential to the craft bakery’s inexorable rise. “Before we started, he told me I could have one employee,” she recalls, with a dash of disbelief. But so much has happened since she met him over a glass of tequila on a Cinco de Mayo after graduating in 2012 from Fontbonne with a business degree.

Now she has enough trusted associates that the entire Holter family, including Naomi, could be assured of their trip to Italy in mid-July. ”I want my kids to be adventurous!” Hungry for more?

TURNING HARDSHIPS INTO HOPE is the heartbeat of sister-founded business Kindred Spirits Designs. Paige and Ally Nichols were diagnosed with COVID-19 last October, giving them copious time together filled with many activities like crafts and creative projects. Their basement was stocked with vintage buttons, thanks to their late nana who was a seamstress, and it became a gallery of inspiration.

Paige made her mom a bracelet out of buttons, sparking an unexpected journey.

With the encouragement of their family, Paige and Ally began promoting their bracelets on social media and quickly needed a name. “Ally and I are kindred spirits,” explains Paige. Much like the sisters, people have been buying these bracelets for their own kindred spirits. The intentional design, beautiful story and meaningful mission behind these bracelets have led to a blossom of bulk orders from the community.

Paige and Ally launched Kindred Spirits Designs with a foundation of generosity and intentionality. For the past six years, Paige has been in and out of hospitals across the St. Louis area. “I’m in pain a lot, and I’m sick a lot,” she shares.

“I know that there are other people who are as well. Making these bracelets brings me joy, and I’m hoping it brings them the same encouragement.” As well as spreading positivity throughout the community, Kindred Spirits Designs is helping Paige gain the independence necessary to support herself and her son.

Creating the jewelry business also has empowered Ally, who has Down syndrome. She has moved in with his sister to work on growing Kindred Spirits Designs. “It has given us purpose,” Paige says. “Ally has gained great independence doing her own laundry and even insisting on a coffee machine.”

Known as the “Joy Ambassador” on her business card, Ally is fearless and eager to share what she and her sister have created. Paige serves as Chief Artisan, finding inspiration from the world around her.

The sisters encourage each other to get out of their comfort zones. The “Princess Line” was created by Ally. “She’s the princess of the family,” Paige explains. On her side of the workbench, Paige’s bracelets are inspired by the people she meets. Her goal is to bring people joy. “Ally and I have gone through a lot together,” she says. “Everyone has their own story, and people are going through so many different things.

The encouragement and constant reminder brings hope and a little extra bit of strength.”

Through Kindred Spirits Designs, Paige and Ally have created more than just bracelets. They’ve built a brand grounded in resilience, love and the power of shared stories.

Their journey is a testament to how creativity, connection and a little bit of joy can transform even the hardest seasons into something beautiful.

The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and the Fabulous Fox have raised more than $350,000 to support the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis’ Disaster Relief Fund. The joint initiative included a benefit concert and online donation effort.

All funds raised will benefit the Urban League and support the most immediate needs of people impacted in north St. Louis following the May 16 tornado.

Counterpublic has expanded its partnership with the International Institute of St. Louis (IISTL). The nonprofit’s campus in Tower Grove East will be an anchor site for the Counterpublic 2026 Triennial. “When the IISTL lost its federal funding, it was clear this was a moment to act,” says James McAnally, Counterpublic co-founder and artistic director.

Together, we can find the right product for you.” While Two Rivers Stone Boutique serves designers, builders, architects and other professionals, the showroom also is accessible for homeowners who may be at the beginning stages of a project or just considering options.

While the showroom offers the chance to see stonework on display, Two Rivers Stone Boutique’s warehouse offers an even wider selection. There, clients can explore unique pieces of uncut stone. “People walk by hundreds of slabs and change their mind four times—they take another lap, and it changes again,” Howell says. “We won’t apologize for making your decision process more difficult. We’re excited to provide the creativity and inspiration for people’s home projects. That’s the fun part of having such large inventory.”

With Two Rivers Stone Boutique’s first anniversary approaching, Howell is grateful for the support the business has received from the community. It was established with the goal of offering St. Louis a unique and exceptional service, and that dedication has paid off. “We’ve been lucky to already have a large number of repeat customers, and the inventory of our most popular selections has had to be replenished several times,” he says. “Our company mascot, Rivers, is also turning 1—so there’s a lot to celebrate right now. We are truly locally owned and family-operated. We’re passionate about continuing to serve the city we care about.” &

accent, natural stone can make a major impact in your home. It’s something John Howell understands. “Stone is often the focal point of our kitchens, bathrooms, bars and outdoor spaces,” he notes. “It’s what catches the eye and sets a space apart.” Howell also understands how difficult it can be to find a piece that truly makes an impact. While working on a home remodel with his wife, Virginia, they encountered that exact issue. “Talking with friends, we learned that they were travelling to places like Chicago, New York and Dallas in search of distinctive products,” she says. “There was no reason we shouldn’t be able to find that in St. Louis.”

Howell’s solution to the problem was to create Two Rivers Stone Boutique. Last year, he leveraged his more than three decades of experience working with Fortune 500 companies like Purina, Enterprise and Centene to build the business from the ground up. The foundation of the endeavor is Howell’s dedication to providing an exceptional customer experience.

“At a lot of showrooms, you’re going to be handed a clipboard and told to walk around,” he notes. “At Two Rivers, I’m your clipboard. My staff and I will greet you and introduce you to our inventory. It’s personalized service.”

In 2015, Wentzville fire Capt. Tommy Shine was part of a team of first responders who rescued three teenagers from a frozen lake. One had been trapped under the ice for more than 10 minutes and made a full recovery after being rushed to the hospital. The incredible story served as the inspiration for the film Breakthrough.

Now, a decade later, Tommy has undergone his own miraculous recovery following a medical emergency.

Last autumn, Tommy fell from a ladder while helping his wife, Brittany, in her salon. The couple received sobering news when they took Tommy to the emergency room. Tests revealed that he had an ascending aortic aneurysm. “They did a full-body CT scan and found it,” Brittany says. “They suggested we follow up with a cardiovascular surgeon. It was very close to the heart and in danger of rupturing.”

Surgery to replace Tommy’s aortic stem and valve was scheduled for December.

He was expected to spend three days in the hospital followed by three to four months off work. Brittany notes that the initial impression following the procedure was that everything had gone well and Tommy’s prognosis was good.

“Visiting hours ended, so I returned to the hotel I was staying at,” she says.

“I got a call that he had coded moments after I left the hospital.”

Tommy was rushed into emergency surgery. “He was under for 72 minutes, and his doctors were telling me to be prepared for the possibility that they wouldn’t be able to bring him back,” Brittany recalls. “But by the grace of God, they did.” The next few weeks were a roller coaster of ups and downs.

At one point, all 11 of Tommy’s organ systems were shut down, and he coded three more times. Doctors believed that he also had a stroke, and when he was well enough for a CT scan, there was concern about damage to his brain.

“One thing would get better, and two things would get worse,” Brittany says.

The Shine family had to consider Tommy’s quality of life. Doctors warned them he would have to live as a quadruple amputee, and there was a possibility that he would be brain dead.

“My husband doesn’t sit still,” Brittany notes. “There was no way he would want to live his life strapped to a chair in a care facility.” The difficult decision was made to put Tommy into hospice care in January; however, doing so was postponed by a few days due to a snowstorm. “The fire department wanted to give him the traditional send off, so they asked if we could wait until the weather passed,” Brittany explains.

That request made a huge difference.

The family spent the weekend meeting with friends and loved ones who came to say goodbye. On Monday, when a nurse was preparing to begin comfort care, Tommy started talking. “His doctors decided to resume all measures to give him more time,” Brittany says.

“As the days passed, things started to get better. Tommy showed us his story wasn’t over.” Tommy’s organ systems began to function on their own, and it was clear he had maintained more brain function than expected.

As part of his recovery, Tommy underwent surgery with reconstructive and plastic surgeon Dr. Arya Namin.

For the surgeon, it was an honor to play a role in Shine’s amazing recovery.

“I was only a small part of a large

multidisciplinary team that took care of Tommy,” he says. “As the son of a police officer, it was particularly rewarding to be a part of his journey. I am glad we are sharing his recovery story because it has been inspiring to see him regaining strength and to watch the community rally around him and his family.”

Tommy is currently in Chicago for rehabilitation where he will remain until this fall. He has received leg prosthetics and is hopeful to also receive ones for his upper limbs. Brittany notes that while their ultimate goal is for Tommy to have independence, they are taking his recovery one step at a time. The support of the community has been a major source of strength for the family. “It’s been amazing knowing we have a whole community and beyond behind us,” she says. “It’s something I can’t really put into words.

I hope Tommy can continue to inspire people to not give up, even when it feels like there is no hope.”

Tommy and Brittany are working on establishing Rise and Shine Outreach. The nonprofit is focused on supporting first responders who are injured outside of work, as well as amputees.

“Since Tommy can no longer be a firefighter, he wanted to find a way to continue helping people during emergencies,” she explains.

“There is a lack of benefits for first responders who are injured outside the line of duty. They are often forced into retirement, and that’s it. Our vision for what’s next is to be a support to people like Tommy in their time of need.” &

WHIDBEY ISLAND The Whidbey Island Retreat is as unique as they come.

Focusing on their strengths and taking risks, Hoedemaker Pfeiffer demolished half of the existing home to make room for the camp-like setting of bedrooms. However, they kept a spirit of modesty and tried to make use of existing resources. Sacrificing none of the home’s original beauty, the renovation was a huge success, and we cannot wait to show you around!

Although they demolished the original house’s bedrooms, bath, laundry, mudroom and garage, parts of the main house were left to keep the spirit of the original ’20s beach cabin and ’70s great room alive. Just outside the home’s doors are beautiful tents used as the bedrooms of the camp ground. Located on Whidbey Island, this home takes indoor/outdoor living to the extreme, offering stunning views of the ocean while doing so.

THE ULTIMATE GLAMPING EXPERIENCE The bedrooms were made with wall tents that scream luxury.

Outdoor living has never been easier with these structures as bedrooms. Tie them open during the day to feel the sun’s warm rays, or sit outside around the fire to see stunning arrays of stars at night. Since we play in the central league, most cities are fun to visit . My two favorites are Chicago and Pittsburgh. The latter has a lot of great golf, and it ’s easy to get around.
