We are all interwoven into a fabric constructed of relationships, with [usually] only one being romantic (unless you’re polyamorous), so why is a day dedicated to love relegated to only our romantic partners? Sure, the subtext of Valentine’s Day is that it is a day for lovers, but mine doesn’t really like me enough to spend an entire day fawning over one another, so I have to come up with Lover-Day alternatives.

Since eating my feelings is self- serving, I decided to compile a list of options we can all maybe draw a little inspiration from to give some love back to those woven into our fabric.

Sign up to volunteer at your local Free Clinic. Seriously. Valentine’s Day is joked about being VD Day every year (at least on my Facebook page it is), and there are plenty of kids that you can scare out of having unprotected sex by helping the Free Clinic with their STD education!

The homeless folks there could use a little friendly, non-judgmental love, too.

Take Grandma and-dash-or Grandpa out to dinner and a movie, especially if they’re widowed. They’re not going to be around forever, and it is my personal opinion that we should find any opportunity that we can to show them that we love them.

Have a pow-wow with your lover and together pick a totally random day to dedicate to romancing one another, then give Valentine’s Day to your kid(s), pet, lonely neighbor or friend.

Polychroming of Color the mental anguish of selection

Gone are the days when one would daub their everyday lipstick on and call it a day. New makeup lines are launching cyclically- which means chemists have the ability to produce an overwhelming amount of polychrome palettes.

Going down the makeup aisle or perusing through your cosmetic reservoir can be an astounding experience for today’s beauty consumer. Should I base my selection on skin tone, outfit, my favorite hue or the latest trend? And if I judiciously select a lip color, will I find this same hue already at home in my makeup bag? There is also the fluctuation of weather premise to select lip color based on the seasons. What’s a beauty queen to do?

When determining lip color, one should keep all of the aforementioned enquiries in mind.

Avoid the mental anguish of feeling inundated by polychroming. You must begin by simply deciding the sole purpose for selecting a lip color. Try giving yourself permission to have a purpose. Is it for a special occasion or to coordinate with an outfit? Next determine the approximate climate conditions of when you will be daubing your lip color. Bright colors are better suited for tropical temperatures and aphotic colors are better suited for more polar temperatures. Lastly, deciphering how the lip color makes you look and feel own your on term is most pertinent. Never mind the consideration of selecting a hue on the skin tone premise. Remember “styling from the inside out” is all about “bridging the gap between perception and reality”.

If you haven’t figured it out yet I am talking about Valentine’s Day. Yes, I am being a bit sarcastic as well.

o love oneself is the beginning of a life-long romance.

However, the month of February is associated with love and Valentine’s Day. Observed every February 14, this day of love is celebrated in many countries around the world. The history of the day has mixed roots in the church and includes the Feast of St. Valentine, in the high Middle Ages it was first associated with romantic love, and in 18th century England, when it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting candy gifts, flowers, and hand written love notes. (Wikipedia, 2014).

It is a day, which due to many reasons, focuses on giving valentine’s gifts and getting valentine’s gifts and in turn that validates that we are loved and that we do love. This assumption is flawed. It is a myth. It is an error in thinking that to be happy or be loved we have to have someone to give things to and get things from. This error in thinking is deep rooted, reinforced by the commercialism of Valentine’s Day, and stems from the fact we need to love ourselves before we can really love another in a healthy way.

Hence, the Oscar Wilde quote above. It is when we begin to love ourselves that we can enter into a healthy and mutually satisfying relationship with another. Keep reading to learn some tips on how to take better care of yourself and to increase your love for yourself.

inner fashion & beauty 1. Take care of your physical health. Go to the doctor, go to the dentist, and address any physical ailments under a doctor’s care. Begin to eat 3 healthy, well balanced meals a day. Exercise 30 minutes a day, at least 3 days a week, and sleep at least 8 hours a night. If we don’t physically feel well it is hard to psychologically and emotionally feel well.

2. Stop comparing yourself to others. The grass is not always greener on the other side! When we compare ourselves to others we are constantly setting ourselves up to feel badly. We do not know what goes on behind closed doors and appearances can be deceiving. We are one of a kind, unique, and special individuals and we are the best we can be.

All that matters is we do the best we can each day.

If we do not have a great day, all we can do is try again.

3. Make time to play: Do something fun and enjoyable each day. Do it for you and no one else. For some people it is a half hour run around the block to clear their head, for others it is reading a good book, and for others it is cooking. Best case scenario, you have a bunch of things that you enjoy and are able to incorporate them into your daily life.

If it is not realistic to do something you enjoy daily you have 2 options, do something you enjoy for a smaller amount of time each day or schedule blocks of times during the week or weekends to play.

4. Be present: The practice of mindfulness shows great physical and psychological benefits. It helps to reduce physical pain, it helps to reduce stress, and it reduces anxiety. Take a few minutes each day to clear your mind and focus on the here and now. Take in the site and sounds of the moment, close your eyes and observe your feelings and thoughts in a non-judgmental way. When you drink your morning coffee or tea, really be present and observe the smell of the drink, the feel of the cup, the initial taste, just focus on the drink and the task of drinking. Use mindfulness throughout the day.

Similar to playing it allows you to be present and allows the body and mind a few minutes to relax.

7. Use positive Affirmations: When you are in the bathroom getting ready to start the day, look in the mirror and recite positive affirmations to yourself.

Some examples are: • There is nothing that comes my way today that I cannot handle.

• I am just where I am meant to be today.

• I am lovable and unique.

Affirmations are ways to retrain our brain to think positively, which in turn increases self-esteem and self-worth. Also tape inspirational quotations on your mirror or at work, where you will see them throughout the day. Play music that makes you feel good on your ride to work. Make positive thinking a part of your daily life.

5. Manage Stress: Stress is a chronic and natural part of life. Research shows those who view it as a challenge as opposed to a threat are less stressed and more resilient. Using the above tips will better help you deal with the stresses of life. If you find that you are having trouble coping with the stressors of life, seek professional help.

6. Make a Gratitude List: Each morning when you wake stay in bed a few extra minutes and make a gratitude list and recite them to yourself. Remind yourself of all you are grateful for. Recite this list at night too. It helps to reduce stress and bring positive awareness into our lives.

WORK OF HEART INTERVIEW WITH THE ARTIST

Born in the Philippines, Andre Soriano immigrated to the United States as a young boy where his exposure to a wide variety of art, music, architecture, and theater eventually inspired him to pursue a career in fashion design. His arresting style and flair meld Old Hollywood glamour with the cosmopolitan influence of fashion centers such as New York and Paris. His unique ability to create such versatile collections of handbags to decorative cocktail dresses to elegant wedding gowns to his punk collection has led to him starring on Bravo’s “Styled to Rock” hosted by Rihanna. However, this success has also only made him more passionate about giving back to others and he believes his work with various charities to be equally important as his work in the world of fashion.

When did you realize that you wanted to become a fashion designer?

I realized I wanted to become a fashion designer when I moved to America at the age of 16.

Was there a particular actor or actress from ‘Old Hollywood’ that you feel is your greatest influence and what is it about this person that inspires you?

There are multiple actresses who have inspired me. Jean Harlow, Audrey Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo to name a few who ROCKED Hollywood screens back in the forties.

I love the Golden Era of films during that period.

Hollywood is such an influence for me when creating a collection. I love how Madonna and Rihanna ROCK the fashion world!

What kind of person do you envision wearing your fashions? What kind of bride do you envision as wanting to wear one of your gowns?

It was an honor host Ms. Aisha Tyler wearing a Soriano gown during the 21st Annual Critic’s Choice Award. I was almost floored when I saw a picture of her along with Oprah Winfrey and Forest Whitaker all standing together. Actress Ms. Misty Upham of August, Osage County with Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts and Ewan McGregor, wearing a

Recently, I’m so excited about Actress Katheryn Winnick wearing one of my pieces for a February magazine cover in Beverly Hills. Her recent carreer highlight’s include a sexy turn opposite Jake Gyllenhal and Anne Hathaway in Ed Zwick’s “Love and Other Drugs”. I would love to dress Jennifer Lawrence for her wedding. I am just so ultra blessed and grateful for these wonderful opportunities.

What does “Fashion as Freedom” mean to you and what do you want others to take from this mantra? Can you explain where this belief came from?

All men and women have the freedom to wear what ever they want. As a Fashion Designer, I channel each individual’s personality and perspective and from that, I execute the right original design from fabric selection, design concept to red carpet.

“My advice: be grounded, be genuine, stay true to yourself and follow your goals one day at a time!!!”
