We believe that each and every one of us can make an enormous impact on the world. By making small changes in the items we use, the purchases we make and the way we approach each day, we all really can change the world! Each day you vote with your dollars, supporting the companies that share your values. We believe in creating a sustainable company culture, one where each decision is carefully weighed based upon the impact.

WHY ORGANIC? Environmental Benefits Organic food production is a much more natural and sustainable enterprise than conventional farming. This is because organic agriculture does not use any synthetic pesticides or inputs that often remain present in soil and water long after the crops have been harvested, and may potentially create additional damage to ecosystems (such as the current crisis with bee populations). Also, organic agricultural methods encourage recycling, for instance using manure as a natural fertilizer in fields.

Nutrition & Health Benefits

It has been scientifically validated that many organic foods offer higher quantities of important vitamins and nutrients than their conventional counterparts. Certainly, the consumption of organic foods reduces the amount of pesticide residues and other potential toxins ingested. This has proven to be a particularly important benefit for infants and small children.

Social Benefits

Most organic farmers operate smaller scale family farms where they have a strong, personal connection to the land they are farming. The purchase of organic food supports these farmers, their families, and their communities.

” ACUREORGANICS.com We believe in pursuing a triple bottom line. People and planet are just as important as profit.

THE AWAKENING OF FLORA LE RÉVEIL DE FLORE With the approach of dawn, a freshness is felt in the air and Flora, Goddess of Spring, awakens... As she talks, her lips breathe spring roses, sprinkling the ways before her with colours and with odours excellent... Immortalised in Botticelli’s Primavera and Poussin’s Realm of Flora, the Goddess of Spring is celebrated by Ralph & Russo in a majestic collection that symbolises nature’s regenerative powers. For Spring/ Summer 2015, the Ralph & Russo woman is an exultant deity, whose gifts lend themselves to delight. Ralph & Russo enlist floral metamorphic myths as allegories of this collection. Alluring and fertile, the flower thematizes Haute Couture at its most abundant. Acclaimed for its excellence in craftsmanship, this maison de couture inspires with bewitching embellishment, no holds barred. Traditional thread embroidery intertwines with metallic resin print, and individual petal appliqué sprouts organically from geometric pearl embroidery; meticulously fine and gleaming like dew. The colour palette - crisp and most sophisticated - is extracted from botanical brilliance: pomegranate pinks flirt playfully with soft mints and cornflower blues. The collection also alludes to balletic exuberance. Sheaths of organza caress the body tenderly, and voluminous cloud-like gazar contrasts with fluid chiffons. Nyctinastic capes in jet black and midnight blue cocoon the body, fending off the night’s nectar thieves. 14  FASHIONAFFAIRMAGAZINE.COM

The fashion show is a procession and the models metamorphose into fairies and nymphs, gracefully collecting blossoms in their structured collars or scattering buds into the folds of their diaphanous gowns. The dresses are alive and limber. Oversized organza petals wrap the body sensuously and accumulate into magnificent blooms. The rousing finalé is a bravado of handicraft; a blushing ombré extravagance, bearing a hybrid of traditional and modern adornment and laden with crystals, pearls and silver thread. In a great creative leap and an exhilarating evolution a year on from their Paris debut, Tamara Ralph and Michael Russo (pictured right) present their clients with a cup of nectar and proclaim that Haute Couture wields perennial beauty and eternal youth.

LEFT: Gwyneth Paltrow blossoms at the 87th Academy Awards in a custommade pale pink silk-crepe gown by Ralph & Russo Couture. An adaptation of a look from the Spring/ Summer 2015 collection, the creation features a shoulder rosette of delicate oversized petals in gazar and organza. BELOW: Top model Isabeli Fontana swished down the red carpet in a sheer black pleated silk-tulle gown with metallic thread work and leather flower appliqué by Ralph & Russo Couture.

MICHI

represents enduring sophistication, alluring femininity, exceptional quality and impeccable fit. MICHI originated from the desire to fill the gap between glamorous boudoir lingerie and comfortable, utilitarian athletic wear. “Absorb what is useful, discard what is not. Add what is uniquely your own.” These are the wise words of martial artist, actor, and philosopher Bruce Lee that inspired the MICHI Spring/ Summer 2015 collection. His philosophies are powerful tools for empowerment, improvement, and success, whether we focus on fitness goals, design, business, or everyday life. This collection embodies Bruce Lee’s tenets of simplicity and versatility with its fluid tops, elegant leggings, and clever layering pieces. Channeling confidence, determination, and joie de vivre, saturated hues of vivid magenta, luminous yellow, and powerful ocean blues are juxtaposed against the understated power, strength, and versatility of foundational true blacks and soft heather grays.

Cabin fever has set in and it’s time to pack away the heavy wools and dreary colors of winter! Spring is coming and everything is blooming in wild color and bright patterns. This year the discerning shopper has her eye on all thing blue and white in geometrics, gingham, and bohemian chic. Splashes of red, bright yellow, and black and white prints are also making their way into the scene this season. This spring it’s all about blasts from our pasts. Shirt dresses are the granddaughters of the iconic shirtwaist dress made popular as the embodiment of domestic goddesstry of the 1950s. These dresses had the shirt top with the button up front and collar with a fuller skirt and then belted at the waist. As time went on the skirt became less full and more easily cared for with fabrics ranging from cotton to poly-blends. The cuts are varied with shirt dresses making a strong comeback this season. They are fabulous for going to the office for a casual yet crisp look, but undo a couple of buttons, slip on some sandals and some

chunky, funky jewelry, and you are ready for an evening with friends. This season shirt dresses have gone from simple to sharp with bold stripes, walking slits, and chic skinny belts. Collars are, for the most part, staying masculine with sharp points, but designers are going retro with a version of the “Mod” dress with the sweet Peter Pan collar. This adds a feminine touch and an old fashioned interest to your neckline allowing your look to be sweet and sassy. No Pollyanna here! Gingham is here in bold new ways from highly structured suits to oversized patterns cut on a dais on playful two piece crop shirts with matching skirts. Men are also wearing gingham this season with their spring and summer suits as their shirt of choice. But skip the table cloth, please! They are choosing bold oranges, grass green, periwinkle, and sweet pinks as their colors of choice. Women on the other hand, look for your gingham in stark black and white with your patterns mixing, maybe on the diagonal on top and then straight up and down on the bottom. This look is very flattering and fun for your spring wardrobe collection. 2015MAR | FASHIONAFFAIRMAGAZINE.COM  35

It’s that time of year to make a circlet of flowers and wear it in your hair. Tie-dye, feathers, floral prints, and fringe are the name of the game for the bohemian chic look. Earthy tones in a bright palette of aquas, pinks, periwinkles, and tangerines flow on the maxi dresses in thin cottons and sheer silks. Whether you choose to go short or long, feminine power is the look of choice with gorgeous lace accents and loose, comfortable wear. These dresses are unstructured, flowing, and perfect for the day or night wear. Bohemian chic has its root in the French word for “gypsy”, reflecting an ideal of free-spirited, sexy, and delightful zest for life. “Chic” contrasts sharply with “bohémien” as it is defined as “elegantly and stylishly fashionable”. So the woman who enjoys bohemian chic is a contrast of worlds, one who sees herself as free-spirited, yet stylish; sexy, yet elegant; someone who enjoys making the rules, then living by them. Some other trends to keep your eye on: • All things Japanese from Asian inspired dresses to kimono inspired trench coats. The patterns are traditional with small and large floral and vegetation prints in bold and soft colors with lots of coral, turquoise, and cinnamon. • Geometric patterns in blue and white and black and white. The bigger the better! Look for them to be asymmetrical and scattered, as in you dress should not simply be covered in large blue and white diamonds, but should be a work art that would make even Picasso sit up and take notice. Bold lines in contrasting directions is essential this year.

MAR2015

• Wide leg pants and culottes are back in sheer and soft fabrics. These are fantastic for the on-thego business woman who want to look feminine without worrying about a skirt being caught in the wind. • Pleats are back! Skirts with teeny, tiny pleats are the thing to have this year. The shorter the skirt, the cuter it looks. • Fringe and tassels, these swing in spring with a fun look that surpasses the traditional suede jacket or skirt. Look for them on shirts, skirts, and dresses. Now, to be fair, dresses were not originally made exclusively for women. Throughout the course of time, it has primarily been men who have worn the skirts in the family from the Scottish kilt to the Greek toga to the European tunics that reached above the knees. Just to clarify, women wore gowns that most usually (although not everywhere) covered them from neck to ankle (or just above) while men wore shortened versions that left their knees exposed. Moving forward to the 20th century as the history of women’s dresses and gowns is long and illustrious with a changing fashion history that is truly rich and vibrant, in the past 100-150 years women saw the most complex changes in our fashion choices. The roaring 20s birthed a new ideal of equality and freedom of expression after the First World War with dresses for women boasting masculine cuts with strong angles and constructed of sturdy materials. It was the dawn of the Modern Woman, the Career

Woman – women who went to work in industry for the first time while their men went to fight the war were no longer willing to only sit at home. They became stenographers, phone operators, secretaries, and more, although many returned home after they married to manage their families. Then came the Great Depression and World War II and dresses changed again. There was a return to a feminine ideal and frugality that brought about innovative designs due to people having to mend and make their own clothes from the odds and ends of worn, old clothes. From necessity and a lack of materials, dresses were slimming and well-fitted, so hemlines were also on the rise. Enter in the prosperity of the 1950s. Much like the 20s where women had found an initial freedom on the workplace and world, they were discovering their own sexual and intellectual liberation and their dresses conveyed the message loud and clear. A woman’s body became the focal point of her fashion with dresses being fitted at the waist, revealing the upper portions of the buttock and bosom, backs and fronts plunged and hemlines continued to rise. This trend spread into the 60s and the advent of the miniskirt!

SUSTAINABILITY:

We feel that, as business people creating products relative to an active lifestyle, we have a distinctive responsibility to act as stewards of the environment and the surrounding communities. It is imperative that we contribute towards the preservation and restoration of our natural world. We should help to ensure that there will be mountains, forests, beaches, and oceans for generations to come. We share a passion for sustaining the environment so that the actions we take now will not compromise future generations. We believe it is the responsibility of every company to take the appropriate steps toward creating less waste and to improve their processes. We are not satisfied with the status quo in our industry, so we have started by setting specific objectives.

OUR OBJECTIVES: • Strive to be an industry innovator on

environmental issues. • Motivate our suppliers and customers to share in our mission. • Commit to environmentally friendly ways to produce and package our products. • Educate and inspire our employees. • Reduce, reuse and recycle within our workplace. At BEARPAW, we recognize the importance of being responsible when it comes to the environment and our role in making the world a better place. As a result, we’ve created our own team… “Greener Living,” We have set expectations on our employees in terms of recycling and emphasize responsibility in energy use throughout our offices and homes. We will constantly evaluate our packaging efforts to determine where we can utilize recycled materials and where we can cut back on waste. We will communicate our expectations with our suppliers and provide them with ideas on how they can participate and help meet our objectives.

NOTABLE PLACES TO

STAY.EAT.SHOP

CALIFORNIA

BY ZLATA FAERMAN

Some say you can tell a lot about people when you enter their home. Their style of furniture, decor and even lighting fixtures contribute to the image you create for them. That’s exactly why I’m inclined to shop at a boutique versus a big brand store. I can absolutely appreciate the time, patience and dedication it takes to set up a place of business, while still maintain a level of chic character that is the perfect pairing of personality and merchandise. In my recent travels to Los Angeles, I stood beside one of my dearest friends Lauryn Kahn, as she married the love of her life. My husband and I decided to make trip out of it, and following the wedding, took a week to travel up the coast up to San Francisco. Naturally, our stops consisted of hotels, eateries and places to shop.

LOS

Next time you’re in any of the below areas, you must try and eat, sleep, stop and especially shop in some of these unforgettable destinations along the way:

FIG SANTA MONICA

FIG Santa Monica, as complemented by its mirrored wall decor, boasts a seasonal menu that reflects the simple taste of locally grown and organic ingredients. The bistro-inspired dishes are served in a casual, yet inviting atmosphere.

GING Article by Jeni Tetamore

A GLOBAL PATTERN With visions of warm meadows and picnic baskets bursting with all the good things spring brings resting on a blanket of red and white checks, this is how most people interact with gingham. Gingham, bringing to mind Little House on the Prairie and Little Women and Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, sweet, old fashioned values… Let’s just stop right there. While it’s true gingham has been around for quite a while, the 17th century in fact, the word itself is derived from the Malay word “genggang”, meaning striped, and was produced by the Dutch colonies in Malaysia and Indonesia. However, when the fabric was imported into Manchester, England, those fabric masters began experimenting with check versions until the word “gingham” became mostly associated with the vertical and horizontal stripes of equal width intersecting to make the checkerboard sort of pattern we know and love today. Everyone in the world wants to lay claim to creating gingham, mostly because it is inexpensive to produce, easy to way, durable, and a simple design. There is no right or wrong side to true gingham, which also makes it very economical for dress-making and home furnishings. However, you can find gingham being claimed as being founded in their region all over the world.

• India (top left image) has the gamocha, a gingham towel used to dry the body • It symbolized the battle between good and evil in Indonesia. The contrasting colors represent this relationship. • Japan’s pattern also has spiritual symbolism. The fabric was used to wrap around statues when a child had died. Japan still produces 100% cotton gingham today – which is more than can be said for most other countries • The Masaï tribe in Africa has actually used a check

GHAM fabric pattern for thousands of years. Gingham check is part of the national costume. • In Cambodia a krama is a gingham type cloth with many uses from decorative to the practical. • In Germany, it is said that gingham originated in Bayer, while the Italians claim that gingham is from Northern Italy, and the French call it ‘Vichy’ since they believe it came from the Vichy region of France. • The Unites States of America claims that gingham could not be more American and have produced the fabric for a couple of centuries. Unfortunately, gingham was imported to the colonies long before it was locally produced. • European gingham is also associated with the authentic country-style and rustic symbolism. This perceived wholesomeness made gingham a popular choice for tablecloths, curtains, aprons, and workwear. • Gingham is a popular choice for school uniform around the world including Australia, the Philippines, South Africa,

France, England, and America. It is also the print of choice for children’s clothing, infant’s bedding, and trendy bistros.

While blue and white or red and white tend to be the traditional colors of gingham, with red and white bringing to mind that picnic blanket mentioned earlier, designers this year and years past have had far more fun with gingham than you thought they might. One of my personal favorites is the oversized print on the Katherine Hepburn’s coat in her movie Undercurrent (1946), where it has the more masculine cut without losing the feminine touches of the oversized buttons. And gingham isn’t only for the tops either! Such as when Marilyn Monroe wore pants with tiny checks and Brigitte Bardot (left) had a full skirt with medium sized checks, turning the gingham print into something fun and sexy! And in 1963 Sean Connery made sure that gingham wasn’t just for women anymore in From Russia with Love as the iconic 007. James Bond in a large print blue and white gingham with his swimsuit? Yes, please!

Gingham provides a youthful appearance for the wearer, bringing to mind those summer picnics and bright meadows. It is the look for spring for men, women, and children. And it’s not just in blue and red anymore or worn in up and down checks. Oh no! Bold colors of orange, pink, or green, cut on a diagonal with mixed large and small checks all still in keeping with the color and white checkerboard pattern we have come to know and love.

Since the inception of the website three years ago, John’s vision has come to life with a large and diverse following of individuals sharing a common passion. few years ago Drü and Asher were similar to many young couples pursuing the American dream. Drü was managing a chain of coffee stores and Asher was building her photography business and taking care of their young children and foster children. Dedicated Christians, the Collies have a heart for children in need. While considering adopting a child from Africa, Asher came across a YouTube Video on jiggers and their devastating impact on children. Jiggers burrow into feet

and lay eggs which multiply and damage tissue, causing great pain and horrible infections. As Asher read more about this problem half a world away, she knew the Lord had placed a burden on her heart for these children who couldn’t defend themselves against an almost invisible foe. During trips to Africa, she realized the solution was simple: closed Toe shoes would protect children’s feet from jiggers. Consequently, Asher took the first step, which was creating the pattern that is used at shoe cutting

| power of love parties all over the world. Drü fully supported Asher’s efforts after he visited Uganda and personally saw the problem up close... while removing jiggers from the foot of a small child. Working together with an amazing team of high-energy and committed people, they now have a plan, a vision, and core values. Sole Hope is making an impact one vulnerable person at a time by holding medical clinics, providing education, and jobs for and with the beautiful souls in Uganda. Like many other problems and

diseases the ignorance around jiggers is a huge hurdle in the battle. Education will be key in keeping children and families jigger-free. Therefore, Sole Hope is taking action. Each child receives individual education before they leave our clinics; in addition to the villages that we work in, and schools. They are taught to wear their shoes and take care of jiggers when they are first noticed in the feet and are much easier to remove.

2015MAR | FASHIONAFFAIRMAGAZINE.COM  125

WHAT ARE JIGGERS?

Jiggers (NOT CHIGGERS- jiggers are parasitic burrowers) are small chigoe fleas that live in the dust, and are found on the dirt floors in schools and the homes of many families in Uganda and other similar climates. These parasitic insects cling to livestock and transfer jiggers into homes primarily in rural areas. The female jiggers burrow into the surface of skin that has been exposed to the flea. Once embedded in the body, the jigger lays eggs and creates up to pea-size egg sacks and continues to multiply by laying more eggs. These wounds are painful, and cause difficulties for victims in daily activities such as walking, playing, and attending school. The infection can lead to severe inflammation, ulceration and fibrosis. It can also cause lymphangitis, gangrene, sepsis, and the loss of toenails, amputation of the digits, and death may also occur. There is also a social stigma and shame associated with the victims of jiggers which causes them to hide the problem which makes it worse. While jiggers in small numbers are not deadly, the secondary infections (gangrene, tetanus and other diseases) caused by jiggers can be fatal.
